When his master meets an untimely demise, a young squire (Ledger)
in 14th century France takes his identity, working his way up the jousting circuit, earning
nobility that should be impossible for someone not nobly born. Why does he do it? He needs
to take down an evil-doer, of course. (Mark Addy plays Ledger's
assistant, best friend, and occasional "muscle". Another supporting character is scribe
Geoffrey Chaucer, who will go on to write The Canterbury Tales. Sossamon plays
Ledger's romantic interest).

The Buzz*
This movie seems like a slight departure for Brian Helgeland, whose previous movies
have mostly been thrillers or crime stories, but then again, sometimes that's exactly the
approach that works really well in period pieces. Or maybe he just really likes medieval stuff,
and wanted to do this movie... nothing's worse than being pigeonholed into one type of
anything.
Heath Ledger's career keeps going strong following his lead turn in 10 Things I Hate About
You. This summer, he's got The Patriot, and then this movie sometime early in 2001. He's
also one of the contenders to play Peter Parker in Spider-Man.
March 16, 2000 Shannyn Sossamon has been cast to co-star as Ledger's romantic interest, in her
feature film debut. According to Variety, she was discovered by a casting agent when she was
DJ'ing a party for Gwyneth Paltrow.
May 17, 2000 Paul Bettany has joined the cast, and filming did indeed start on May 8th,
2000 as scheduled.
