The Buzz*
The novel, The Four Feathers, by A.E.W. Mason. It's been adapted to film five times, the
most popular of which was the 1939 version directed by Zoltan Korda.
Korda directed another version in 1955, called Storm Over the Nile, which was also his last
movie. The most recent adaptation was a 1977 TV movie starring Beau Bridges.
Jude Law had been in talks to star, but he'll be filming Steven Spielberg's A.I. at about the
same time instead.
Director Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth was one of the most exciting
discoveries for western audiences in 1998,
and the time since has seen Kapur's name attached to several
projects, including Long Walk to Freedom and Steinbeck's Point
of View (both projects are now stuck in limbo waiting for directors).
This new version of a classic 1939 war epic again turns Kapur's
cameras towards the British, but deals instead with the age of British
Imperialism (which is quite different from the time in which
Elizabeth was set, when England was weak and in jeopardy).
Though his feature film resume is brief, Heath Ledger has been a
much sought after actor in recent months, mentioned or rumored
for roles such as Peter Parker (Spider-Man) and the Vampire
Lestat (The Queen of the Damned). He can only do so many
movies in a year, but it appears Miramax is doing whatever needs to
be done to get him in the lead for the movie, following the quick
departure of Jude Law, who will instead be getting a dream role,
working on the Spielberg/Kubrick project, A.I.
With filming starting very soon, confirmation of Ledger's
participation (or the name of his replacement if the deal falls through
) should be coming soon, along with other cast, etc.
