Tchéky Karyo plays Major Jean Villeneuve, a French officer who volunteers to train the rough Patriot militia. The French alliance was key in the Patriot victory. Villeneuve would have served under the Marquis de Lafayette, commander-in-chief of the combined forces of France and the United States. He is loosely based on Baron Friedrich von Steuben, a Prussian officer who joined Washington’s camp at Valley Forge to train troops to fight like a disciplined European army.
