I was born with Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy. For 23 years I have tried to become independent. In September of 1996, a friend told me about Paws With A Cause. In November of 1997, my AJ, a black Labrador Retriever came. She does many tasks (43 to be exact)for me. She opens comercial and interior doors, picks up dropped objects, brings me the phone, opens and closes the refrigorator. These are only a few tasks AJ can perform. But most of all,she is great company for me. Her emotional supoort is a godsend for me. This is a two way street. She helps me through the daily tasks that before were out of reach, and I in turn, give her excellent pay. People still want to do for me, but I just remind them of my perfect AJ. All service dogs are specifically trained for each client. So whatever the person needs help with(it may be different for each person)the dog is trained to do. They are also trained around cats, so cats are not a problem if the client has one in the home. Most of these dogs actually like any cat because of their training. Paws with A Cause has a limited breeding program where they breed Black, Yellow, and Chocolate Labrador Retrievers as well as Golden Retrievers. They also take some donated dogs from private breeders and private citizens. In addition, they go to animal shelters to see if there are any usable dogs. If there are, they bring them into a quarantine room at the training center to make sure they will not have any illnesses. These dogs are adults, but the puppies they breed and the puppies that get donated are raised in a foster home for about a year before going back to the center for formaql training.
