Forbidden Romance

DISCLAIMER: This story is fictional...not true. I DO NOT know the Backstreet Boys in anyway shape or form. This was a story that I wrote for my English class last year while we were studying Romeo and Juliet, and the topic of Forbidden Romances; hence the title. I did some editing from the version that my teacher read to spice it up a bit. I don't want you falling asleep on me.

Before you continue I would like to go on the record for saying that I LOVE Brian Littrell. In this story he is portrayed as a semi-snob. I do not think of him like that in real life, I made him like that for the purpose of this story. Please no hate mail!

It was the start of Kallie Martin’s first day of her Senior year at Ruskin High. She walked into her homeroom and took a seat in the center of the room. She had a few minutes to waste before the bell rang, so she grabbed her purse and began to rummage through it trying to locate her schedule. She would make an attempt to memorize it so she wouldn’t have to waste that much time between classes. She dug deeper into her purse with one hand and with the other, she carelessly tossed her brown hair over her shoulder. Just as she was pulling her schedule out of her purse she heard giggling from the back of the room.

“Oh my gosh, I cannot believe that he is in our homeroom!” one of the girls sitting in the last row said. Kallie moved her gaze to the door and saw Nick Carter walk in. Nick Carter was the most popular guy in the Senior class. He was tall, muscular, had blond hair, the prettiest sparkling blue eyes, was a basketball player, and had an amazing voice. All of the guys in the school wanted to be him and all of the girls wanted to date him. Like all the other girls, of course, Kallie had admired him from afar. What girl hadn’t? There was no way that a guy like Nick would ever consider dating anyone like Kallie though. Kallie was just a normal girl, not the captain of the cheerleading squad, and not the star of the girls varsity basketball team. Kallie was just a normal teenager who showed up for school, did her work, and spent Friday and Saturday nights home alone, with no dates. Nick on the other hand, was the captain of the Varsity basketball team, the lead in all the school plays, and had dates every weekend with pretty, popular girls. Kallie watched as Nick walked across the room and smiled at her as he stopped in front of her desk. He looked around the room at the rapidly filling seats and eyed the empty desk next to Kallie.

“Are you saving this seat for anyone?” He asked her. She shook her head ‘no’ and motioned for him to sit down. He did. “My name is Nick. I remember you from Chemistry last year.” he stated. Kallie remembered back to Chemistry the year before. Nick had sat three rows to her left with his peppy cheerleading girlfriend of that particular time. Kallie wondered how he remembered anyone, or anything about the class. He had barely paid attention to anything except the short skirt sitting next to him.

“Really?” she asked interested. “My name is Kallie. I remember you too. Weren’t you the guy that was dating Rachel Anderson?” Kallie asked referring to the cheerleading girlfriend.

“Please don’t remind me of that. That was a bad experience, all she did was fix her make-up and tell lies. I hated her.” Nick said laughing.

“Hey Nick, my man!” Brian Littrell, Nick’s best friend said as he approached Kallie and Nick.

“Hey Bri!” Nick said back as the two of them exchanged high-five’s. Kallie took this as a sign that her and Nick’s conversation had come to an end. As the bell rang ending homeroom, Kallie stood up and quickly left the room, followed by Nick and Brian.

“So who was that girl you were talking to Nick?” Brian asked.

“Her name is Kallie, I had Chemistry with her last year.”

“Why were you talking to her?”

“I was talking to her because she is nice and friendly. Why?”

“I just thought that you would go for someone that was more...in your league, you know, more popular.”

“What’s wrong with going for someone like Kallie?” Nick asked not necessarily upset with Brian for being snobby because of his choice, but because of the fact that Brian would think Nick would stoop as low as not dating someone because of their popularity status.

“Come on Nick! She is in a lower class, she’s not worthy of dating popular guys like us. I thought you knew that!”

“Are you serious Brian?”

“Dead serious, man.”

“I cannot believe that you would say something that shallow. Kallie, for all we is a very nice person, and you would give up the chance to date a nice girl just because she isn’t as popular as you or I?”

“Well, yeah I would. Nick, that would ruin your reputation and you know it! Do you really want all those pretty cheerleaders to think that you go for unpopular, unknown girls?” Brian said laughing a little.

“Brain, I thought you had more class than that.” Nick said in disgust as he walked away from his best friend.

“Nick, at least consider becoming as unpopular as her, and I know you’ll come to your senses.” Brian called after Nick.

* * * * *

Nick walked into lunch later that day still thinking about what his best friend had said earlier. “Could he really be that shallow? I mean, I’ve known Bri for years, he was always telling me that I can't date someone who is not known around the school, but was it always this bad and I just didn’t notice?” Nick questioned himself. He spotted Brian sitting at the basketball team’s table and he started to make his way over there.

Kallie was sitting at her lunch table with her best friend, Abby when Nick walked in and started towards the basketball table. He passed Kallie on the way and smiled at her.

“Hi Kallie.” He said.

“Hey Nick.” Kallie said smiling back at him as he continued walking. Kallie watched Nick sit down at the table next to Brian and start talking.

“Kallie...Kallie!” Abby was saying as she wove her hand in front of Kallie’s face.

“What!?” Kallie asked as she was brought out of her trans.

“Nick Carter just said hi to you.”

“Really? I hadn’t noticed, Abby.” Kallie stated sarcastically.

“Why?” Abby demanded.

“I don’t know, maybe because he’s nice?”

“No, no, no, Kallie. What it going on with you two? Nick never talks to anyone like us unless he has a good reason to. Please tell me that you are not involved with him and his little b-ball buddies.”

“Abby, Nick and I were just talking in homeroom this morning. Nothing more than that. Why?”

“Kallie! He and his friends are dicks! I mean, they don’t date anything that doesn’t jump and shake a pompom at them!”

“Well, I don’t think that you have anything to worry about. I highly doubt that Nick Carter, or Brian Littrell for that matter, would ever consider asking me out.”

“Hey Nick?” Brian asked in a sing-song voice for the third time. Nick had been looking in the direction of Kallie Martin again and Brian didn’t like it one bit.

“Huh?” Nick asked guiltily. Brian had caught him staring. Nick couldn’t help it. He liked Kallie. He thought she was really cute. He didn’t understand what Brian had against liking someone who wasn’t popular. He had always been like that, and Nick for some reason went along with it.

“What exactly do you think you are doing?” Brian asked surprised. “I thought you and I already agreed to forget about Kallie?”

“Look Bri, I don’t know when all of this started, but Kallie is a very nice person and if I want to like her, I will. I don’t care what you think.”

“Nick, why won’t you listen to me? She’ll make you a loser!”

“I really don’t want to listen to this anymore. See you later, man.” Nick said as he stood up and walked towards the door. He smiled at Kallie again as he walked by.

Kallie watched as Nick and Brian argued at their table. She couldn’t tell what they were fighting about, but Nick stood up and left the table. As he walked by her, he smiled again.

“See! I know that something is going on, Kallie. He just smiled at you again.”

“So what? He’s friendly.” Kallie tried to convince her friend but more importantly herself. Why was Nick acting that way? He had never paid any attention to her in all the years they had been going to school together, which was since Kindergarten. Now all of a sudden he smiles at her and says ‘hi’ every time he sees her. It was getting strange.

“Whatever Kallie, but I’m telling you do not get involved with him.” Abby stated.

“Oh please. Nick Carter and I? Never!” Kallie said not believing that her friend could ever imagine something so absurd!

Later that night Kallie was sitting on her bed doing her math homework when the phone rang.

“Hello?” she asked when she picked up the receiver.

“Hi, is Kallie home?” said a unfamiliar male voice.

“This is Kallie. Who is this?”

“Hi Kallie. This is Nick.” Nick said.

“Nick? Nick Carter?” Kallie asked in shock. Nick Carter had called her. What was going on?

“Yep! That’s me!” he said.

“Um, hi.” Kallie said unsure.

“Hey. How are you doing?” he asked casually.

“I’m fine. How about you?” Kallie answered still suspicious about why Nick was calling her.

“I’m good. Hey, I was wondering something.”

“Yeah?”

“Would you like to go out with me on Friday night?” he asked.

“Uh, sure I’d love to.” Kallie replied in awe.

“Great. I’ll pick you up at say, seven?”

“Okay. Where are we going?”

“Well, I was thinking, maybe the movies? I hear there is a really good Bruce Willis movie playing.”

“Sounds cool. You need the address?”

“Nope, Kal, I’ve been going to school with you for 13 years, don’t you think that I would notice you live one street over from me by now?”

“You’re right. Sorry. I’ll see ya later then.”

“Great. I can’t wait. I’ll see you tomorrow in school.”

“Yeah, see you tomorrow.” Kallie said as she and Nick hung up. “Oh my gosh! The most popular guy in the school just asked me out! I have got to tell Abby!” Kallie thought as she reached for the phone, but stopped. She couldn’t tell Abby. Abby was the one person who told her not to date Nick. “Man!” Kallie thought. Now she would have to keep this a secret and that would be hard.

“Yes!” Nick said as he hung up the phone. Kallie had said yes to going out with him. He went to call Brian to tell him the great news, and remembered Brian didn’t like Kallie. If Brian found out that Nick and Kallie had a date, who knows what he’d do. “I guess I’ll have to keep this to myself.” Nick said to himself. How could he do that when he had a date with a really great girl?

* * * * *

Friday night came fast. Nick got out of his green Lexus and started up Kallie’s sidewalk. He rang the doorbell and heard a muffled ‘I got it!’ from inside. A few seconds later Kallie opened the door for him.

“Hi Nick.” she said as she stepped out onto the porch. “Bye Mom, bye Dad!” she called before she closed the door.

“Hi Kallie.” Nick said. He led her to the car and opened the door for her. He got in his side and pulled out of the driveway.

“How are you doing?” he asked making conversation. He wanted to bring up the fact that all of his friends disapproved of him dating her, but he didn’t want to hurt her feelings.

“Good.” Kallie said smiling. She took a deep breath as they stopped at a red light. “I have something I need to ask you.” she said.

“What is it?” Nick asked nervously.

“Well, my friend Abby would kind of kill me if she knew that I was out with you, so could you please keep this date between the two of us?” she asked in one breath.

“Why would she kill you?” Nick asked.

“Well, she doesn’t really think that you are exactly right for me.”

“Oh. I totally understand. In fact you know what?” Nick asked.

“Yeah?”

“I have the same problem. Brian told me that I couldn’t like you.” Nick said relieved.

“Brian told you what?”

“That I couldn’t like you. He said that...” Nick drifted off. He didn’t want to tell her that Brian said dating her would ruin his reputation.

“That what? Nick, you can tell me.” Kallie said.

“He said that dating you would destroy my popularity in the school.” Nick let out.

“Oh really?” Kallie asked not sounding upset.

“Doesn’t that make you mad?” Nick asked confused.

“Nah, I know that I’m not as popular as you are. It’s no surprise that Brian said that, it’s probably true.”

“I’m glad you aren’t upset. What did your friend say about me?” Nick asked interested.

“Abby said that you and your little basketball buddies are dicks, and that you don’t date anyone that isn’t a cheerleader.”

“I’m not a dick!" Nick defended himself.

“I know, that is why I’m going out with you.” Kallie said laughing.

“Well, it’s nice to know you disagreed with her.” Nick said smiling.

“Yeah, so do you think that you could keep quiet about our date?” Kallie asked again.

“Only if you promise to keep quiet about it also.” Nick said.

“Deal.” Kallie agreed. They pulled into the movie theater parking lot and got out. Nick bought the tickets and they went into the dark theater and sat down. A few minutes passed and Nick and Kallie carried on small talk. Suddenly, Nick slid down into his seat and stopped talking.

“What?” Kallie asked.

“Basketball team, and Brian right over there.” Nick said pointing to the other side of the theater. Just then Brian looked over and spotted Nick. He started to stand up to come over when he saw Kallie. He looked shocked and sat back down to tell the team what he saw.

“Oh man.” Nick said.

“I’m sorry Nick.” Kallie said.

“Don’t be. I’m not sorry. Let’s just enjoy the movie and deal with Brian later.” Nick said smiling.

“Okay.”

“Or not.” Nick said looking past Kallie again.

“What now?” Kallie asked following Nick’s gaze to the entrance to the theater. Abby and her cousin had just walked in and were walking down the aisle to find a seat.

“Please don’t look over here.” Kallie pleaded. Abby glanced over at Kallie and smiled, but her smile faded when she spotted Nick sitting next to Kallie. “Well, there goes our fun date.” she said to Nick.

“Yeah. Oh well, lets at least watch the movie.”

“We can take care of Brian and Abby when it’s over.” Kallie said smiling as the movie started. Nick took Kallie’s hand and they watched the screen. Every so often one of them could see Brian or Abby giving them dirty looks, but they ignored it. The movie ended and Nick and Kallie stood up to leave. When they exited the theater they both saw Abby and Brian waiting for them outside. Brian approached Nick and Abby walked up to Kallie.

“I thought I told you to stay away from him!” Abby said just as Brian said,

“I thought I told you to stay away from her!” The two of them looked at each other. “Why should she,” Brian said pointing at Kallie, “have to stay away from Nick?” Brian asked.

“Do you really want me to tell you?” Abby asked back.

“Yeah I do!” Brian shouted.

“He,” Abby said pointing at Nick, “is nothing but a big headed, basketball playing jerk, who cares about nothing but who his next girlfriend will be!”

“Well, little miss unpopular here is nothing special for Nick to be caring about, you know!” Brian said back. Nick and Kallie just looked at each other.

“Hey, hold up, hold up!” Nick said. “Will you two please stop it. Kallie and I were having a pleasant date until you two showed up.”

“You two shouldn’t be having a date!” Brian yelled at Nick.

“Look Bri, I told you before, I don’t think that it is your decision who I do or don’t date.”

“Same goes for you too, Abby.” Kallie said. “I was having a great time with Nick until we saw you, and you.” she said looking from Abby to Brian.

“But...” Brian and Abby said.

“Stop! We don’t care if you think that we are totally wrong for each other. As much as we respect your opinions, we don’t have to agree with you. I personally think that this might actually work, if you two would stop butting in!” Nick said.

“Just let us find out for ourselves.” Kallie said.

“Fine, but don’t say I didn’t warn you, Kallie.” Abby said.

“And Nick, don’t come crying to me when you are turned down by that beautiful cheerleader you were going to ask to Homecoming because she found out you dated Kallie.” Brian stated.

“Do I look like I care right now? Plus what difference does it make? I wasn’t going to ask her to go with me anymore anyways.” Nick said glaring at Brian.

“Sure Nick, and who were you planning on asking then?”

“Um...Kallie.” Nick said is dramatically slow, looking at Brian like he was stupid. Kallie just looked at Nick in surprise.

“Really?” Kallie asked. Nick just looked at her, smiled, and nodded. Brian gave then a disgusted look.

“Hey man, stop it will you?! Jesus, will you get off it. I like her okay?? I’m not hurting you in anyway, just leave us the hell alone!” Nick said getting really angry with Brian.

“Yo Nick, man, I’m sorry.” Brian said sincerely.

“Uh, I’m not the one to apologize to Bri.”

“Fine, sorry Kallie. But, just because I’m leaving you two be doesn’t mean that I agree with this relationship.” Brian said. “Same for me. I still think that this is wrong, but I’ll shut up about it.” Abby said

. “Great, we’ll be seeing you!” Nick said as he grabbed Kallie’s hand and started towards his car.

* * * * *

Brian and Abby watched as they walked.

“They are so stupid.” Abby stated.

“Tell me about it, why can’t they realize how wrong their relationship is?” Brian said.

“I know. God. They are so in for trouble.”

“I totally agree with you. That will never work.”

“Nope. Never.” Abby said nodding her head.

“And the thing that sucks, is that you and I will have to comfort them when they get hurt.” Brian said as he and Abby started walking down the sidewalk.

“Yeah, Kallie takes breakups really bad.”

“Nick too. He may seem like he doesn’t care, but deep down the guy hurts. He just doesn’t show it to anyone. Pizza?” Brian asked casually motioning to the pizza place that they had reached.

“Yeah, I’m kinda hungry.” The two went in and sat down at a table and continued to talk. Suddenly Abby stopped talking and looked at Brian. “What the hell are we doing??”

“What do you mean?” Brian asked clueless to what they were doing.

“You and I are sitting here having Pizza when we were just lecturing our best friends on how a relationship between two people like us could never work.” Brian just looked at her and then down at the table.

“You’re right.”

“Brian, I am supposed to hate you...but I don’t”

“I don’t hate you either, I rather like you.” Brian said grinning at her. She returned the smile.

“I feel stupid. Kallie and Nick are probably talking about us now, about how we are so wrong, and you know what? I think that I agree with her. I am wrong.”

“I feel like shit now.

“Me too.” Abby said blushing.

“Hey, this is what we’ll do. You and I will apologize.”

“Yeah, I’ll call Kallie when I get home.”

“No can do. First of all, when Nick has a date, he takes them to the beach before taking her home, so she won’t be home for awhile. Second, I think that it will mean more if we apologize in person. Together. You think?”

“Yeah, that sounds good.”

“Okay. Come to my locker on Monday morning. From there we’ll head to one of their lockers, most likely they will be together.” Brian instructed.

“Sure, I’ll be there.” Abby said as their pizza arrived and the two of them continued to talk.

* * * * *

“She makes me so mad!” Kallie said as she kicked up some sand. “I never tell her not to see a certain guy.”

“Same with Brian, sure I give him advice on girls, but I never tell him who he can and can’t see. That is not my decision.” Nick said agreeing with Kallie.

“I know. I decide who I will like. Not Abby.”

“Yeah. And I like you.” Nick said smiling.

“Yeah, I like you too Nick.” Kallie said glancing at Nick then back at her feet as she blushed. She couldn’t believe she had just told the most popular guy in school that she liked him.

“Hey,” Nick said stopping to look at Kallie. “why are you being so shy? Something I said?” He asked as he put his finger under her chin to lift her face to his.

“No. I, um, I’m never really good expressing my feelings to guys.” she said blushing again. She tried to look away from Nick, but he was still holding her face.

“Please don’t be shy around me.” He said making eye contact with her. She gave him a worried glance. “What is it?”

“I feel really guilty.”

“About what?”

“Abby, I know that she’s wrong, but still she was trying to look out for me.”

“Yeah, so was Brian, but that doesn’t mean that they can tell us off. I mean, I am really pissed that Brian dissed you while you were standing right there! I could kill him.”

“Oh, Nick don’t worry about that. I get that all the time.”

“You shouldn’t. So what if you are not the most popular girl in school. Actually, thank god you’re not the most popular girl in school, you would have to be a cheerleader, and that would not be you.”

“What exactly is me??”

“Shy, quiet, studious, yet friendly, and beautiful.” Nick said as he kissed her on the cheek. Kallie blushed again. Nick just smiled at her.

“Thanks Nick, it’s nice to know that you finally noticed me.” Kallie said giggling a little.

“Finally notice you?! Kallie I noticed you in the 6th grade. I just didn’t think that you would want to go out with me. I wasn’t the smartest guy, and I was kind of geeky.”

“Aww, I thought you were cute.”

“Then, I became friends with the popular guys and they convinced me not to ask you out. I actually listened to them and never asked you out. But when I saw you sitting there all alone in homeroom the other day it just sparked something in me and I had to see what would happen.”

“I’m glad that you did.”

“Me too.” Nick said wrapping his arms around Kallie’s waist as he leaned down and lightly brushed her lips with his. He felt Kallie sigh against his mouth and he deepened the kiss. He pulled away after a few seconds and took her hand in his. “We better get going, my curfew is in a half hour.” he said as the two of them walked back up the beach.

* * * * *

Monday school, Kallie and Nick walked through the doors together. They had nothing to hide now that Brian and Abby knew about them. As the two of them reached Kallie’s locker Abby and Brian walked up to them, hand in hand.

“Hi Kallie, hi Nick.” she said pleasantly. Kallie and Nick exchanged surprised glances.

“Hey guys!” Brian said giving Kallie a smile.

“Okay, what’s going on? Did we miss something?” Nick asked eyeing Brian and Abby.

“Well, lets just say that we came to our senses. Nick I owe you an apology. I’m sorry for judging you.” Abby said sincerely.

“And I’m sorry Kallie for not realizing what a great person you really are.” Brian said.

“What?” Kallie and Nick asked surprised.

“We were being stupid and immature. We’re sorry guys.” Brian said again.

“Yeah, Brian and I talked after you guys left the movie theater and we realized that you guys were right. It’s not our decision who you guys choose to date.”

“So, we’re happy for you and we all want to be friends.”

“And what exactly is this?” Nick asked as he pointed to their intertwined hands.

“Oh this?!” Brian asked in a mocking tone. “One of the reasons I understand, Nick, is because I was put in your situation. I found someone I liked that was not like me, but I didn’t care.”

“That’s when we realized how dumb we were being. Brian and I liked each other, but we had just told you that you two couldn’t like each other, and it didn’t make sense.”

“No sense at all.” Brian said looking at Abby. She smiled at him as he let her hand go and put his arm around her shoulders. Nick and Kallie looked at each other and smiled too as the four of them headed off to homeroom.

“Hey you guys wanna double date??” Brian asked as he bounced down the hall. Nick and Kallie just laughed.
