Chapter 9
Adam sat down. His father's eyes scared him. Could he know ? Did he find out, and how ? Nick sat next to him and sighed.
"Son, I know you have been sneaking out to see Riley. I understand he's your best friend but until he confesses to his father I don't want you seeing him anymore. I don't want us involved. You understand me ?"
"Yes, sir." Adam answered softly.
"That means no communication with him what so ever. Don't you disobey me." Nick walked out and called out for his wife. Ericka looked at her son and smiled warmly. "Honey, I'm not sure what's going on but let's not get involved. I don't want my baby in trouble, ok ? Now let me go before your father gets even more pissed off. Good night." She kissed her little boy on his forehead and he kissed his mother back on her cheek. "Good night, mom."
He didn't sleep at all that night. He kept thinking about what he read. What could have happened ? Could that guy be telling the truth about his dad and Kevin ? He had to get the book along with other articles and Backstreet bio books written around or after that time. He also thought about Riley. His smooth skin, deep green eyes, his brown black hair, how soft it felt...........
It was seven in the morning when he left the house with his backpack. His parents assumed he was going to school but they were wrong. He quietly went to change clothing at a restroom in the mall nearby. Passer bys thought he was nuts but didn't care who he was. He came out well dressed instead of his usual teen attire.Times before when he wore it people mistook him for a college senior. Now for the final touch. Adam put on some reading glasses. A pair that used to belong to his father who used it for the same reason, to look older. This is why it'd be easier to skip school and not get caught. From there he headed straight toward's the city's largest library.
At the library, he watched as the pages went through the printer, showing him the articles he asked for and allowed. The librarians gave him strange looks when he printed a story about 500 pages long. He simply replied "I'm writing a book." They nodded as if they understood. When they all finished printing he read every single word, indulged and infatuated with the stories. He discovered many things about his parents, uncles, aunts, their friends, and careers. Now there was one thing left; to read the book of BSB's fromer manager. It was quite interesting to read something about them in a sort of negative point of view. It described how being dumped "by the Boys ruined him but then it got interesting. The last and shortest chapter was called "Nick and Kevin". It talked about while on tour, they got lonely being seperated from their wives, took comfort with each other. That resulted in a secret relationship between the two. The book described everything from sneaking into each other's hotel rooms at night to meeting secretly at another hotel where they could have more privacy "to do what they really wanted to do." This man actually followed them without the two noticing. However, it had to end. The book continued that Kevin broke it off. Both loved each other but they had to return to their wives and children. Nick cried for days, Kevin took it hard, but both knew it was the right thing. They lied to the others saying Nick lost a friend from home in an accident while Kevin said he missed his family. It said they made a pact but dude was unable to hear it. That was the last of it and two months later he was fired. Adam was about the to shut the book when he noticed something in small print. It read: If you don't believe me about this chapter then this may convince you. Watch two videos of them together at my web site located on the back cover. There's your proof. Now, Adam thought, it's getting more interesting.
Adam ran to the nearest computer and typed it in. He hoped it'd still be there after all this time. It quickly came up and was still one of the main headlines. Adam read somewhere that fans banned the book claiming that it was full of lies and they were loyal to their band. That explained the very, very few hits. He clicked on it and watched the videos. The first was a little blurry but he could tell it was them. They held hands tightly and smiled uncontrollably. They seemed happy together. The video ended quickly. The second was longer. It had both checking into a hotel together. All Adam could hear was Kevin asking not to be disturbed, they needed to talk business. For ten minutes it just taped the door of their room but then they came out hugging and laughing. Adam saw Kevin caress his cheek and Nick mouthed something to Kevin and it ended. Adam kept rewinding that part to see what his father said. Finally he understood. "I love you."
He was speechless. At first he was determined to solve this as a weapon against his dad when he would finally tell him the truth; but now it seemed horrible to do it. These were emotions he was dealings with, his father's especially. Now he couldn't do it. Could he ?
Adam just sat on the park bench watching a little girl play with her dog, boys playing with the newest, fanciest virtual game, and couples walk by. He loved the idea of not being recognized by anyone in those clothes. He also appreciated not being a celebrity yet. He wasn't even sure if he was going to be in the business. He loved his peace and privacy, but he still had to decide what to do.His mother said he sings just like his father, maybe better. He'd always sang Backstreet Boys songs when he was younger, he wanted to be just like his dad. That dream started to fade when he reached high school.Adam lost interest.
Adam moved his arm up and looked at his watch.
School's over and now he could go home.
He opened the door to his house and dropped everything on the floor. The house was quiet, too quiet. "Hello, is anyone home ?" Then he saw his sister, Evie coming down the stairs. "Oh, great." he muffled.
"No one's home, just me. Mom and dad went to do some MTV interview. They'll be back tonight." she answered him.
"I see." There was an eerie silence for about a minute until he decided to break it. "Sis, listen. I'm sorry, again. "
She looked at him sadly. "I loved him. You took him away. Maybe I'll get over him. I can't stay mad at you forever." Evie told him calmly.
"I'm very sorry, Evie. I didn't mean to fall in love with him. It just happened. Please forgive me." Adam begged his sister.
Evie looked at her teary eyed brother and sighed. "I guess. Well, if something happens between the two of you, will you convince him to come back to me ? His female blonde bomb shell ?" she asked.
Adam almost laughed. "Deal." he simply said.
"So, you're trying to find out dad's past experience, huh ? His uh, little relationship with uncle Kevin ?" she asked bending down to pet their golden retriever, Lex.
Adam thought he felt his heart skip a beat or two. Did he hear his sister correctly ? "What ? How did you know about....?"
"Well, you've left a few clues like those articles you've been printing. I found out two years ago while I was cleaning their bedroom to surprise them for their anniversary. I was cleaning out their closet, and I was at daddy's side. I saw an old shoe box just lying there. I was kind of curious so I opened it up. I found a couple letters that they exchanged when they were together, which I'd admit still sickens me. He hid them under a couple porno magazines. I never thought of daddy that way but, well he's a man. What can I say ? Go check it out. You'll find a lot of useful stuff there but please put everything back where it was. I don't want him knowing we know, you know ?"
"Sure thing. Thanks." Adam ran to his parents bedroom and went straight for the closet. He saw many shoeboxes around, thanks to mom, but one thing caught his attention. A pile of old t-shirts was just lying there while the remainder of the closet was neat and orderly. He lifted the shirts and found a bright red shoebox. This must be it he thought. He lifted the lid and there were Playboy magazines. They seemed pretty tattered, like it was seen too many times. Adam grabbed one and put it inside his jacket. Suddenly, he saw the corner of a vanilla envelope sticking out between one of the magazines. He grabbed it and pulled out the letters.
After an hour, he put it all back, except for one magazine, and made it all look like nothing happened.
He went up to his room and looked at the magazine. After a while he realized something. He was looking at women !
"What the hell's wrong with me !" he yelled out throwing the magazine down to the floor. I love Riley, not them. But he did admit he enjoyed the magazine, it got something down there working. But how ? Well he thought, "I did like them before Riley. Plus I'm not really interested in other guys, just Riley. I wonder what's wrong with me." He couldn't believe how stressed and confused he was. He had sex with Nina but couldn't stop thinking of Riley. Was this normal ? Suddenly there was a knock on the door and he quickly pushed the magazine under his bed and covered himself up with his comforter.
Evie walked in and stopped dead in her tracks."Hey, whoa I see I'm interrupting. Um, just wanted to tell you Riley just snuck in a call and said to write him and to hide the letters in his car outside. He'll leave the window open a little. And do it quick so no one sees you. See ya pervert."
Adam felt an extreme excitement rush in him. Finally he could communicate with Riley.
By the time he was done he'd written eight pages worth. Adam wrote Riley everything he found out recently and how he felt about him. He skipped out the dirty magazine part. He was so excited just holding the letter, knowing Riley's beautiful green eyes would be looking at it.
