The Anniversary
by Grace
Part 1
It’s the anniversary of Maria’s death (the first one since Meg came to Sunset Beach). Ben has been acting very strange and Meg, not knowing what day it is, is trying as hard as she can to find out what’s going on with him. She sees him standing at the beach, staring at the ocean, so she comes closer to him.
Meg: Ben...
Ben: What?
Meg: You’ve been looking at the ocean for half an hour… What’s wrong?
Ben: What the hell… You’ve been spying on me or what?
Meg: No, I’m just worried about you, that’s all.
Ben: In that case could you please just continue worrying about me somewhere else?
Meg: Ben, why? What’s wrong with you today? You were supposed to call me about the order…
Ben: Damn it, couldn’t you just take care of this?
Meg: I could, but…
Ben: Then why didn’t you?
Meg: I’m sorry, I just thought…
Ben: Next time don’t think, just do what I tell you to, all right?
Meg: Ben, I don’t get it… First you tell me to wait for your call until I order anything and then you say that I should have taken care of everything…
Ben: Damn it, Meg, is that stupid order really so important for you?
Meg: No it’s not, but your behaviour is.
Ben: Would you please just stop worrying about my behaviour.
Meg: I can’t.
Ben: Then I’ll help you.
Ben turnes around.
Meg: Ben, don’t…
Ben: And don’t even try to come after me.
He walks away. Meg watches him with tears in her eyes.
Meg (to herself): Oh, Ben… Why are you doing this to me? I love you so much than why can’t you just love me back? God, am I that bad?
Meg wipes the tears from her eyes and suddenly Annie approaches her.
Annie: Hi, Meg. It’s a beautiful morning, isn’t it?
Meg: Annie…
Annie: Watching the ocean alone can be boring, now can’t it?
Meg: Annie, do me favor and go away, or at least shut up!
Annie: Easy, easy… (Annie smiles) I can see that things with Ben aren’t going exactly the way you planned, are they?
Meg: Now, Annie, really shut up!
Annie: Looks like Ben isn’t so willing to go to bed with you…
Meg: To bed?
Annie: Well, that’s what you’ve been trying to do since the day you showed up in Sunset Beach…to get Ben to sleep with you, isn’t that right?
Meg: You are unbelievable!
Annie (smiling): Oh, I know, I know. But you know what, you are unbelievable too… I mean, so many times Ben has made it understood that he doesn’t want to have anything to do with you, and you’re still hoping… still holding on… But let me tell you something – you will never get Ben to sleep with you!
Meg: As if I wanted that!
Annie: Don’t tell me you don’t.
Meg: You know Annie, if you had a heart…
Annie: Hey, I do have a heart…
Meg: If you did have heart, you would know that caring about someone doesn’t always have to be about sex… Love is very much more than that… But I don’t expect you to understand…
Annie: You have no right to talk to me like this!
Meg: Oh, I have a right to do whatever I like. It’s a free country. And now, excuse me, but I have more important things to do than talking to you.
Meg turns away.
Annie: Go if you want to, but let me give you one advice…
Meg: I don’t wanna listen to any piece of advice, Annie.
Annie: Don’t try to get close to Ben, at least not tonight.
Meg: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Annie: Just leave him alone tonight. For your own good.
Annie walks away, leaving Meg lost in her thoughts about Ben.
Meg (thinks): What did you mean, Annie? Why should I leave Ben alone tonight?
Meg doesn’t answer her question and starts walking along the beach. After about fifteen minutes she decides to check whether Ben has called or not. She heads towards Surf – Central and enters. Mark is there, sitting on the coach and reading the newspaper.
Meg: Hey Mark.
Mark: Oh, hi Meg.
Meg: Any calls for me?
Mark: No, sorry.
Meg: Ben hasn’t called?
Mark: No, and personally I wouldn’t count on him to call. You should leave him alone tonight.
Meg: Why? What’s with you people? Annie told me the same a while ago. Why does everyone tell me to stay away from Ben tonight? What’s going on?
Mark: Meg, don’t you know that?
Meg: Know what?
Mark: Today is the anniversary of Maria’s death…
Meg: Oh, God…
Mark: Ben always goes crazy that day. That’s why you should stay away from him.
Meg (with concern): And no one tries to help him?
Mark: No one can, Meg.
Meg: But he shouldn’t be alone today…
Mark: You SHOULDN’T get closer to him. Just let it go, Meg. At least today.
Meg: I can’t, Mark. I care too much about Ben to let him go through that hell alone.
Mark: Just for once in your life listen to Annie’s advice and stay away from Ben.
Meg: I don’t know, Mark…
Mark: We do. Just let him do this on his own.
Meg: I wanna help him…
Mark: I know you do, but tonight it’s best for you to just stay away.
Meg doesn’t say a word and walks to her room. She sits on the bed.
Meg: Ben, why didn’t you tell me that it’s the anniversary of your wife’s death? I would help you, if only you needed my help...
Meg lies on the bed and starts staring at the phone.
Meg (thinks): Maybe I should call you, Ben? But how will you react? God, what am I supposed to do? I can’t just simply leave you alone. I can’t…
Meg gets up and dials the number to the Deep. Someone answers, Meg doesn’t know him.
The stranger: The Deep.
Meg: Hi, it’s Meg Cummings. Is Ben Evans somewhere around?
The stranger: I don’t think so. He hasn’t showed up yet.
Meg: All right then, thanks.
The stranger: No problem.
Meg: Bye.
Meg hangs up.
Meg: Where are you, Ben?
Meg (after a while): I need to find you.
She runs downstairs.
Mark: Meg, where are you going?
Meg: Nowhere, just for a walk.
Mark: OK, but be back quick. Don’t forget that we’re playing volleyball today.
Meg: All right, all right, I’ll be there.
Meg storms out of Surf – Central.
Mark (to himself): Meg, I know what you’re trying to do and I pray to God that you stop this in time.
Part 2
At the marina… Ben keeps staring at the “Mariah” remembering his life with his wife.
Ben: Damn it, Maria, how much more do you think I can take it? Why can’t you just leave me alone and let me move on with my life? Am I supposed to go through that hell for the rest of my life? Please, Maria, just leave me alone.
He looks at the boat and realizes that Maria has no intention of leaving him.
Ben: Damn you, Maria!!!
Ben looks angrily at the boat and remembers his kiss with Meg. He sees the blurred image of her face.
Ben: Stop thinking about her… She didn’t deserve this… you need to leave her alone… you have to.
Ben turns around and sees Meg.
Ben: Damn it, what are YOU doing here? You said you weren’t spying on me…
Meg: I wasn’t…
Ben: So, what the hell are you doing here? And don’t tell me that you were just taking a walk and you saw me.
Meg: Ben, I wasn’t spying on you… it’s just that I’m worried about you…
Ben: Worried?
Meg: Yeah… Look, Mark told me that today is the anniversary of Maria’s death…
Ben: Looks like Mark talks too much.
Meg: Look, Ben, I just don’t want you to be alone tonight.
Ben: Meg, you just don’t understand, do you?
Meg: There’s nothing to understand, Ben. You’re hurting and I wanna help you…
Ben: You can’t help me!
Meg: How do you know if you don’t let me help you?
Ben: Meg, no one can help me, all right? And especially not you…
Meg: What do you mean?
Ben (looking at her icily): Nothing… nothing, just go and leave me the hell alone.
Meg: Ben, why are you doing this?
Ben: Just go, damn it!!!
Meg (giving up): All right, I’ll go. But it’s not fair to you, Ben. The hell it’s not.
Meg for a moment keeps looking at Ben and then walks away. He comes back to the beach where Mark, Casey, Rae, Michael and Vanessa are about to play volleyball. Casey notices Meg.
Casey: Hi, Meg. It’s good you’re here because Mark and I needed someone to our team.
Mark: Yeah, we need to beat them.
He looks at Rae, Michael and Vanessa.
Meg (sadly): I’m sorry guys but I don’t feel like playing volleyball right now. I’m kind of tired. I think I’ll get some sleep.
Meg heads towards Surf – Central.
Mark (calls after her): Hey, I’ll walk you.
He runs after her.
Mark (to the rest): Just play without me for a moment.
Meg: Mark, you didn’t have to do this.
Mark (with concern): Hey, what’s wrong?
Meg: Nothing, I’m fine.
Mark: Like hell you are. Meg, please, tell me what happened?
Meg: I saw Ben at the marina.
Mark: I told you to leave him alone!
Meg: I know, I know, but I just…
Mark: Meg, look, I know how much you care about him…
Meg: That’s right…
Mark: But you have to let it go, Meg. For your own good.
Meg (nearly angry): For MY good? And what’s good for Ben? Going through something like this alone? Do you think that’s good for him?
Mark: Meg, it’s his own choice.
Meg: He can’t make his own choices when he is in so much pain. Doesn’t he know that there are people who care about him?
Mark: Maybe he does. Meg, I know that he cares about you too, but he is afraid of hurting you.
Meg: I know that he won’t hurt me. I know that.
Mark: But he doesn’t. Sometimes he even scares himself.
Meg: He doesn’t scare ME.
Mark: I know that you would do anything to help him but I don’t think that there is anything you can do today…
They reach Surf – Central
Mark: Look, I’m going back to the beach. Are you sure you don’t wanna come?
Meg: No, thanks. I’ll stay here.
Mark: All right, take care of yourself.
Meg: I’ll try.
Mark leaves Surf – Central and Meg goes to her room. She lies on the bed and thinks about Ben.
Meg: Why won’t you let me help you, Ben? Can’t you see that I’m here for you? Ben…
Part 3
It’s late afternoon. Mark is cleaning the tables at the Deep. Ben has told everyone to leave and the club is empty. Suddenly Mark hears someone gong down the stairs.
Mark (shouting): Can’t you read?! It’s closed!!!
He sees Meg.
Meg: I know. What’s going on? It’s early, why is Deep closed?
Mark: Ben threw everyone out. He wants to be alone… Meg, what are you doing here in the first place?
Meg: I work here.
Mark: I know, but that’s not the reason you’re here, is it?
Meg: Mark…
Mark: Meg, I told you to stay away from Ben!
Meg: So, he is here?
Mark: Meg…
Meg: Where is he?
Mark: Meg, please, go.
Meg: No, I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving Ben alone.
Mark: Meg, I told you…
Meg: I don’t care what people tell me. I’m gonna be there for Ben whether he wants it or not.
Mark: Meg, I don’t think it’s a good idea.
Meg: Maybe yes and maybe not, but I’m not leaving Ben tonight. Please Mark, just go home and let me take care of Ben.
Mark: Meg...
Meg: Mark, please. I know what I’m doing.
Mark: I hope so.
Mark takes his things and leaves the Deep. Meg starts to clean the tables.
Meg (to herself): All right, Ben Evans, I’m gonna take care of you tonight. And I’m not leaving. Unless you’ll go with me…
Meg finishes the cleaning and at the same time Ben goes down the stairs.
Ben (not seeing Meg): Mark, you can go home now. (he sees Meg) Now this time it’s really enough. What the hell do you think you’re doing by coming here?
Meg: Ben…
Ben: Who the hell do you think you are?
Meg: I am your friend.
Ben: A friend? If you were my friend, you wouldn’t spy on me like this and you would just leave me alone.
Meg: I’m not spying on you, I’m just making sure that you’re all right.
Ben: I am fine. See, I’m absolutely fine, so you can just go now.
Meg: No, I can’t. And you’re not fine, Ben. The hell you’re not. And I’m not gonna just let you stay here alone, think about your wife…
Ben: You don’t know anything about my wife!
Meg: I know that you loved her very much and that thinking about her, especially today, must be driving you crazy…
Ben: And what can you know about it?
Meg: I know more than you can imagine.
Ben: You know nothing.
Meg: I know that you’re hurting… And I wanna help you.
Ben: Why don’t you help yourself and go home.
Meg: No! I’m not going anywhere.
Ben: Oh yes you are!
Meg: I’m not leaving you… not tonight…
Ben: Meg, how many times do I have to tell you that I don’t need you here? Can’t you understand that?
Meg: No, I will never understand how you can choose to go through something like this alone while you have so many people who care about you and want to help you…. Annie, Mark… me… Ben, I can’t stand seeing you like this. So hurt, so lost… It’s breaking my heart… Ben, why can’t you just let me help you? I wanna be there for you… I wanna take your pain away…
Ben: You can’t take away my pain…
Meg: But why can’t you just at least let me try?
Ben: No, Meg… You shouldn’t waist your time here.
Meg: I wouldn’t call trying to help you wasting my time. I would do anything to reduce your pain.
Ben: Then just go, it will be better for you. And I won’t have to worry about hurting you.
Meg: How can you possibly hurt me?
Ben: By letting you stay here and go through that hell with me…
Meg: But I want to.
Ben: You didn’t deserve that, Meg.
Meg: You didn’t deserve it either.
Ben: Oh yes I did.
Meg: Why? Why do you say so? Ben, no one deserves to go through something like this. No one.
Ben: I do. And now, would you excuse me – it’s my hell so why don’t you leave me alone in it.
Meg: Not a chance.
Ben: What did you just say?
Meg: I’m not going anywhere.
Ben: Meg, doesn’t that get through to you?! Get out of here!
Meg: You wish. I’m not going anywhere until you tell me why do you feel like you deserved all this. Ben, what happened that night?
Ben: You know what happened. The whole damned town knows it!
Meg: I know about the accident, but I feel like there was something more to this whole story. Something you’re not telling me, something you’re afraid to say.
Ben: And how do you know that?
Meg: I can see it in your eyes. They tell me that there is something that’s killing you, but you are just too scared to say what it is. And I know that you want to tell me, you just…
Ben: Damn it, of course it’s killing me!!! I am responsible for Maria’s death!!!
Meg: You keep saying this… But why?
Ben (sighs): You don’t wanna know…
Meg: Yes I do. I wanna know what happened that night so that I can help you get through all this. If you just told me…
Ben (remembering seeing Maria with Derek): I can’t tell you, Meg. I just can’t, OK? It’s too hard…
Meg: And that’s why I’m here. To make it easier for you.
Ben: You can’t make it easier.
Meg: Yes, I can. Just let me.
Ben: No, I won’t let you. I won’t let you go through that hell with me.
Meg: Ben, please, don’t shut me off like this… Talk to me.
Ben (becomes really angry): There is nothing to talk about!!! Go home, Meg!!! And leave me the hell alone!!!
Meg: I won’t!
Ben: What am I supposed to do to make you go away?!
Meg: There is nothing that you can do.
Ben: Maybe I should call the police. This is my club and you’re in private place.
Meg: Sure, go ahead!!! Call the police, call whoever you want!!! Throw me out of here!! And then stay here, get lost in your thoughts about Maria and go crazy!!! (looks at him with tears in her eyes) Wish you luck!!!
She smiles ironically and heads towards the door.
Ben (fighting with his past and his current needs): Meg… Wait…
Meg turns around, nearly runs to Ben and gives him a hug, feeling that this time he is not going to push her away. He holds her closer and closer feeling that this gives him comfort.
Meg: It’s OK… It’s going to be OK… Just tell me…
Ben: It’s Derek.
Meg: Derek? Who is he?
Ben: My brother.
Meg: Your brother? I didn’t know you had one… What did he do?
Ben: Not here, Meg… not here… (he takes her hand and heads towards the exit)
Meg: Where?
Ben: At home.
Meg: You mean your house?
Ben: Yes.
Ben squeezes Meg’s hand and they go out of the Deep.
Part 4
Ben and Meg walk inside Ben’s house and Ben leads Meg upstairs, to his bedroom. They sit on the bed and for a moment remain silent. Ben is doing everything he can to find the strength to tell Meg everything, but it’s obvious that it’s really hard for him. Meg takes his hand and looks straight into his eyes.
Meg: Hey, I’m here. You don’t have to be afraid of anything.
Ben: I’m scared that if I tell you the truth, you’ll never be able to treat me the way you used to.
Meg: Ben, I will never change the way that I feel…
Ben: Maybe if you hear the truth…
Meg: Whatever the truth is, please, just tell me.
Ben: I’m not sure if you wanna hear it…
Meg: I do.
She looks at him imploringly, at the same time letting him know that she is there for him.
Ben: My brother, I mean my twin brother…
Meg (surprised): Derek was your twin?
Ben: Yes… Anyway, it had been going on for quite a long time.
Meg: What had been going on?
Ben: Maria had been acting so strange… She was so far away… She wasn’t coming for our meetings…
Meg: I didn’t know…
Ben: Until one day everything became clear?
Meg: What do you mean? What happened?
Ben (with pain in his eyes): I found Maria and Derek together… in bed…
Meg (shocked): They were having an affair?
Ben: Yeah.
Meg: Ben, I’m so sorry…
Ben: Well, according to Maria this wasn’t exactly an affair..
Meg: What do you mean?
Ben: Maria swore that she thought that Derek was me…
Meg (reading Ben’s mind): But you didn’t believe her.
Ben looks at Meg scared.
Ben: No, I didn’t… She betrayed me. She slept with him and I couldn’t stand that.
Meg: Then what did you do?
Ben: I left.
Meg: You left?
Ben: Yeah. I left and started running away… I went to the boat… Maria ran after me… She was swearing to God that she didn’t know… But I didn’t believe her… I mean – would you?
Meg: I don’t know, Ben. I really don’t know.
Ben: But I didn’t even try to talk to her… I didn’t listen to her… I just walked away.
Meg: So she ran after you to the boat?
Ben: Yes. She tried to explain but I didn’t listen… We set off… That’s when the storm started… The wind was blowing… And this damned rain… I lost control over the boat… (Ben starts remembering that night) The storm was getting worse and worse every second… Suddenly Maria fell of the boat… She tried to hold on but I was to weak to keep her… God, I tried, I really tried to save her… I didn’t let her die… I wanted to save her… I really did…
Meg (trying to calm Ben down): Of course you did. I know that. You wouldn’t hurt her… You wouldn’t hurt anyone… You couldn’t…
Ben: And how do you know that? Everyone keeps saying that I let Maria die. Why don’t you believe that?
Meg: Because I know you. I know that you are a gentle, compassionate, caring man and that you wouldn’t hurt anyone… even if you were very angry.
Ben: I let her die… I didn’t save her…Meg (nearly screams): That is not true! You did absolutely everything you could to save Maria! It was an accident! You had nothing to do with her death, do you hear me?!
Ben: You weren’t there…
Meg: Damn it, Ben! You loved Maria and you didn’t do anything to hurt her! You didn’t let her die. And if anyone else says otherwise…
Ben: Everybody says otherwise!
Meg: Then they don’t know you.
Ben: And you know me?
Meg: Yes I do!
Ben: You can’t say that you know me. You didn’t see how angry I was that night…
Meg: Maybe I didn’t, but I do see how hurt you are right now… how much pain all of this is causing you. I can see that this is killing you… What happened to Maria is killing you and I know that you couldn’t possibly do anything to hurt her.
Ben: But she is dead. And if I had believed her maybe she wouldn’t…
Meg: Ben, you had every right not to believe her… You can’t blame yourself… You can’t blame yourself for what happened to Maria…
Ben: I should have done something… I should have tried harder to save her…
Meg: You tried… You did your best… It’s not your fault, Ben…
Ben: I don’t know…
Meg: It’s not your fault.
Ben: Why do you have so much faith in me?
Meg: Ben, I…
Ben: What did I do to deserve this?
Meg: It’s not the things you do… It’s just the way you are… the mysterious SB from the Internet… The way you talked with me on line… And then everything you did to help Annie and to save me from Eddie… That’s why I know that you can’t hurt anyone.
Ben (suddenly freaking out): Meg, I think that you should go now… I told you too much...
Meg: Ben, I’m not going anywhere… I’m not leaving you, especially not now, when you opened your heart...
Ben: I really think that you should go.
Meg: Oh no, you’re not gonna throw me out like that… Not now.
Ben: Please, just go. I wanna be alone right now.
Meg: No, you don’t.
Ben: What?
Meg: You don’t wanna be alone. I know that you want me to stay… you just don’t want to admit it because you’re scared.
Ben: Meg, don’t…
Meg: Don’t what? Ben, why can’t you just be honest with me… (looks into his eyes) You don’t want me to go, do you?
Ben looks at Meg, first very scared and then more and more confident. Then he sits closer to her, takes her hand and finally holds her close trying to feel her warmth. Meg does everything she can to make Ben feel safe and understood.
Ben: Don’t go… Please…
Meg: I won’t, Ben, I won’t…
Meg remembers seeing the blood in Maria’s studio and slowly pushes Ben away.
Ben: Meg, what’s wrong?
Meg: Ben, can you please just tell me one more thing?
Ben: Anything you wanna know.
Meg: I… One day I went into Maria’s studio…
Ben: You did what?
Meg: I found the key and I couldn’t help myself… I’m sorry…
Ben (looking at Meg a little bit angry and meaningfully): So I assume that you want to ask about the blood?
Meg: I know that you had nothing to do with it, but I just…
Ben: It was Maria.
Meg: Maria?
Ben: She… she stabbed Derek…
Meg (sighs with relief): So it was Maria… I’m sorry, Ben… I needed to know…
Ben: So now you know everything. Are you sure you still wanna stay here?
Meg: I’m positive. I told you – I’m not going anywhere. I won’t leave you…
Ben: Promise?
Meg: I promise.
Ben continues holding Meg and after a few minutes they fall asleep in each other’s arms. Meg wakes up later at night and sees Ben sleeping quite peacefully by her side. Trying not to wake him up, she takes off his shoes and shirt. Then she takes off her dress and lies in bed next to Ben. Suddenly she hears him screaming in his dream.
Ben: Maria, no!!! Maria, where are you?!!! Maria!!!
Meg: Ben, Ben, wake up. Ben, it’s just a dream. Please, wake up.
Ben suddenly wakes up sweaty. He looks around with fright. He notices Meg.
Meg (gently): Hey, it’s OK. It’s just a bad dream. Everything is fine.
He gently strokes his hair and holds him tight.
Meg: It was just a bad dream. It’s OK. Everything is going to be fine. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.
Ben doesn’t say anything. He just lets Meg comfort him. Soon, they fall asleep again.
Part 5
It’s the next day morning. Annie had been trying to find Ben for the last couple of hours. She didn’t succeed so she decided to check at his house. She quietly opens the door and walks inside. She doesn’t notice anything strange so she walks upstairs. She opens the door to Ben’s bedroom and is shocked to see Ben lying in bed holding Meg in his arms.
Annie (thinks): Oh my God, no!!! What is this bitch doing here?! My God, what did she do to Ben?
Meg starts to stir, so Annie leaves the room. Meg lifts her head, looks at Ben and smiles.
Meg: Thank you, Ben. Thank you for letting me help you.
She smiles again and gets up. She goes downstairs to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for Ben. At the same time Ben wakes up and reaches for Meg. He opens his eyes and finds out that she is not there.
Ben: I knew this couldn’t be true… She wasn’t there… It was just a dream.
Meg (entering the room): What was just a dream?
Ben (smiling): Meg… you’re here…
Meg: I told you I wouldn’t go anywhere… (places the tray with breakfast in front of Ben) Here, it should help a little.
Ben: Thank you… Thank you for everything… for being here…
Meg: It’s nothing. I’m glad I could help.
Ben: You did. And you have no idea how much.
Meg (smiling): That’s good… Look, I need to go back to Surf – Central. Mark and the rest are probably very worried about me.
Ben: Yeah, you should go…
Meg: But I’ll be back soon, all right?
Ben nods.
Meg: Bye.
She comes closer and gives Ben a hug.
Ben: Bye.
Meg smiles and goes out of the room. She leaves Ben’s house when Annie approaches her.
Annie: What are you doing here?
Meg: That’s none of your business!
Annie: You’re wrong, it is my business! What have you done to Ben?!
Meg: I haven’t done anything to him!
Annie: Then what were you doing in his bed?
Meg: That really is not your business, Annie.
Annie: Did you sleep with him?
Meg: And what if I did?
Annie (slapping Meg): You bitch!!!
Ben (going down the stairs): What the hell is going on here, Annie?!
Annie (blushing): Nothing, I was just…
Ben (angry): You were just leaving!
Ben grabs Annie’s waist and leads her towards the door.
Annie: What was this slut doing in your bed???
Ben: What did you just say?
Annie: What was she doing in your bed?
Ben: That is none of your business!
Annie: What’s going on with you, Ben?
Ben: Nothing, I just understood a few things yesterday.
Annie: What things?
Ben: I don’t have time to talk to you.
Ben throws Annie out of his house.
Ben: Sorry for that.
Meg: It’s OK.
Ben (touching Meg’s face): Did she hurt you?
Meg: No, she didn’t… Look, I really should go now. See you.
Ben: OK. See you.
Meg leaves and goes back to Surf – Central. She sees Mark sitting on the coach.
Mark: God, Meg, where the hell have you been? We were dead worried about you.
Meg: I’m fine.
Mark: What happened?
Meg: Nothing happened.
Mark: Then where were you last night?
Meg: I was at Ben’s.
Mark: Excuse me… Did you just say that you had spent the night with Ben?
Meg (blushing): Not with Ben… I mean not in this sense of the word… I was just helping Ben get through the night.
Mark: He… he let you do that?
Meg: Yes he did.
Mark: Oh God, how did you do that?
Meg: I just… I was there for him, that’s all.
Mark: And he wasn’t going crazy?
Meg: At first he was, but later he opened up for me. He told me everything…
Mark: What do you mean EVERYTHING?
Meg: I mean EVERYTHING.
Mark: Meg, what…
Meg: I’m sorry, Mark, but I need to call Ben.
Mark: Meg…
Meg: Bye.
Meg smiles and goes upstairs to her room. She dials Ben’s number.
Ben: Ben Evans.
Meg: Hi Ben, it’s me. How are you?
Ben: I’m fine… Thanks to you.
Meg: I’m glad… Look, I will go down to the Java Web to see what’s going on there and then I’ll come by to see how you’re doing.
Ben: I’m OK. And I can’t wait to see you.
Meg (smiling): Me either. Bye.
Ben: Bye. (he hangs up) God, Meg, I don’t know how you managed to get through to me like this, but I am glad that you did. (he looks at Maria’s portrait) You’re not gonna ruin my life, Maria. You’re not!
