Shattered Trust, Stolen Hearts

Chapter 36
“What the hell was that?” Ben scrambles out of bed, grabbing his robe on
the way.“It sounded like Susan.” I run to the window. “I knew we shouldn’t have
left them alone with Bess.”Ben runs downstairs and I follow him. I don’t care that we only have our
robes on and the whole world will know what we’ve been doing.“It’s okay, Ben.” Bess says. “Someone threw a ball and Susan got in the
way. She’s fine now. I guess that scream really shook you up.” I look at her
face, and I know she’s laughing at us. Oh my God, she probably wanted to
disturb us, to catch us in the act so to speak. I am feeling so paranoid just
now. It’s not like me at all.“I don’t think we’re any of your business, Bess.” Ben says harshly. “Your only
concern is the children. Anything else is out of bounds. Do you understand?”
From his voice, I can tell that he is starting as he means to go on.“Yes, Ben.” Bess snaps at him. She has a temper on her, I can see what
Derek saw in her. “Come on children, it’s time for your nap.” She pushes
past us.“We saw daddy.” Susan says.“No, honey, I’m your Uncle Ben. I thought you understood that.” He bends
down to her level. “Go upstairs with Bess.”“But....” Susan starts to cry.“Susan, come with me.” Bess tugs her arm. “It’s clear that your Uncle has
better things to do.” She disappears before Ben can speak.“What am I doing wrong?” He asks me. “I’m just not cut out for this
fatherhood business.”“You’re a perfect father, Ben.” I reassure him. I don’t know what else I can
say. “Come here.” I lead him onto the deck where the sun is just beginning
to set. “Do you know where you are, Ben?”He laughs. “Sunset Beach.”“We saw each other at sunset for the first time. Your smile and your eyes
captivated my heart that day. I saw your innate goodness. I know now what
I knew then, that you’d be the only man to father my children.” I wrap my
arms around him, and close my eyes. “Close your eyes and tell me what you
feel.”“I feel your incredible sexy body and your arms around me.” He sighs. “I
am so blessed to have you in my life, Meg.” I open my eyes and turn around,
still captured in Ben’s embrace. The sunset is breathtaking, the red and
golden hues splashed across the still sky. There is not even a sound to be
heard. It’s as though the whole world has ceased to exist and there’s only
us left.“We’re all blessed, Ben.” The sunset is over, I take his hand to lead him
inside when I hear a sound under the deck. “What’s that?”“I’ll check it out. You stay there.” He insists. He goes onto the beach.
“There’s nothing there, sweetheart. You go inside and I’ll be right behind.”“I’m sorry, I’m getting paranoid, with Derek around.”“He’s in jail, Meg. He can’t hurt us now.” Ben tries to reassure me, but I see
he is having a hard enough time believing it himself. “I’ll make you a drink...”
The doorbell rings at the same time as the ‘phone. “Damn it. You get the
‘phone and I’ll answer the door.”“Hello....” I say.“It’s Ricardo. I just wanted to say that Derek made bail and he’s out....” He
tells me, his voice is as cold as ice. I look towards the door and I see Ben
arguing with Derek. I slam down the ‘phone and rush to the door.“Looks like we’re all here.” Derek laughs. “Won’t you be surprised when you
find out what’s in store for you tonight?”Chapter 37
“Well, aren’t you going to ask me in?” Derek laughs. “I thought our dear
Mama taught you better manners than that.”“What the hell are you doing out of jail, Derek?” Ben demands. “I thought
they locked scum like you up for life.”“That’s not very brotherly of you.” Derek pushes his way in, and pokes Ben
in the shoulders. “For your information, the DA dropped the charges to
manslaughter and I made bail.”“You killed five people, Derek?” I ask. “How can she drop the charges?”
Suddenly I get it, and so does Ben.“I gave her what she desperately needed of me. Let’s just say I performed
satisfactorily.” He smiles.“You disgust me.” Ben walks away from his brother.“Oh, that really hurts. Not.” He laughs. “Seeing you squirm is only half the
battle. Taking my children away from your saintly influence is the other
half.”“Damn you, Derek. Those children are staying here.” Ben says, bitterly.
“It’ll be a cold day in hell before I let you have them. You’ve destroyed
three years of their lives already.”“I have a court order saying I can take them anywhere, as long as we stay in
Sunset Beach.” He says smugly. “Of course I have to be near my brother,
and his darling fiance. I take it, you’re not married yet.”“You know damn well we’re not married yet.” Ben turns around, his blue eyes
look hurt.“That’s even better, because I am.” Derek says, going to the door. “Meet
the new Mrs Evans. Come in, darling. Don’t be shy.”Ms. Morgan walks through the door, looking completely different and very
married to Derek. She can’t keep her hands off the man. “This is Sheila
Evans.”I laugh. “Sorry Derek, I’m just having a difficult time imagining you
married.” Ben just stands there with his hands on his hips, looking
completely bemused. He walks over to me, and drapes his arms over my
shoulders.“You better believe it, baby. I’m a married man, dedicated to making Sheila
a hundred percent satisfied. She understands me...”“Like the DA understood you?” Ben can’t keep quiet any longer. “Come off it
Derek, you love women, and you can’t keep your wandering hands to yourself.
Take the way you treated Meg, for instance. You raped her in your mind and
she felt it in her heart.”“You’re really showing your true colours, Ben, are you?” Derek wanders
further into the house. “You’re just as jealous of me as the time I got the
chocolate ice-lolly and you got the vanilla.”Ben laughs. “We were five years old then. You can’t compare woman to
ice-lollies.”“Why not? Both taste incredibly good.” Derek goes to his new wife, and
kisses her passionately. “Meg, aren’t you jealous of sexy Sheila? You could
have been her if only you left my boring brother.”I feel physically sick at the sight of them kissing. “Actually, I’m just
wondering if Sheila is feeling okay after that kiss. I would have to go for a
shot if you kissed me!”“Why, you little bitch.” Derek snaps. “I want my children now.” He goes to
the bottom of the stairs. “Clive, Susan, daddy is here. You’re coming with
me now.”“You’ll take them over my dead body.” Ben pushes Derek out of the way.“I was hoping you’d say that.” He jumps up and punches Ben in the face. Ben
falls over and smashes his head on the marble floor. I run to him, and cradle
him in my arms. His head is bleeding.“How can you be so heartless, so cruel, Derek?” I sob.He smiles. “That’s easy. I really hate that man, Meg. He is so self-righteous
and so good. I won’t stop until he is dead. It’s my mission in life.”The children run downstairs. “Daddy, you’re here!” They run to their father.
“What’s wrong with Uncle Ben?” Susan’s eyes grow bigger as she looks at
Ben’s lifeless form on the floor.“He’s very tired, sweetie. That’s why you’re coming home with me, and
Sheila.” Derek walks towards the door, Bess follows with Clive and Susan at
her side. Only Sheila doesn’t move. “Come on, Sheila. Tonight’s our
honeymoon night, we go and make sweet music.”“But we just can’t leave them there...” Sheila says.“One thing I forgot to tell you, honey. The floor’s too good for Ben, he
belongs in the mud.”I swallow my tears, and jump up. “You’re a sick man, Derek. Just go. Ben
doesn’t need you and neither do I.”“You will one day, Meg.” He comes over to me and looks me in the eye.
“When you’ve got nothing, you’ll need me.” He laughs. “I promise you that.”
He goes out of the door, slamming it behind him.I kneel beside Ben, holding him close to my heart. A million emotions run
through my mind. I couldn’t bear to see him die such a pointless death.
“Ben, please wake up. I need you so much. God, please let him live.” With
that, Ben opens his eyes. “Thank God.” I kiss him all over.“What just happened?” He sits up and rubs his head. “I feel like I’ve been
run over by a truck.”“Derek punched you, Ben.” I hold his hand. “Don’t you remember?”“Of course I remember. He threatened to take the children. Oh my God,
where are Clive and Susan?” He asks.“Derek took them away with him. I’m so sorry. I couldn’t do anything.” I
hide my face away from him.“Hey, it’s not your fault. Derek’s a law unto himself, I know that better than
anyone else in the world.” Ben tries to lift his head and look at me, but he
just can’t.Suddenly Mark rushes in. “Ben, what happened? I just saw Derek rushing
off in a sports car with the twins.”“He attacked Ben, Mark.” I look at my friend, wishing that Ben and I could
have a normal life with no dramas. “Can you ‘phone for an ambulance,
please?”“Ben’s not the only one under stress here.” Mark comments as he calls for
an ambulance. “I think you’ve got a lot of thinking to do, Meg.”Mark is absolutely right. Ben and I have experienced so much in the past
few months that we’ve got no idea what a normal life ‘looks’ like anymore. I
look at Ben who drifts in and out of consciousness and think how much I love
him. But is that enough, I ask myself....Chapter 38
Ben is rushed straight into the ER when we arrive at the hospital, and I am
told there is nothing I can do but wait. I go outside and look at the stars. I
close my eyes and imagine that Ben is holding me as we look at the stars,
talking endlessly about our future together. I don’t think we’ve ever sat
down and discussed what we’ll do when we get married, like how many
children we want to bring into this world.I am so lost in my thoughts that I don’t hear someone approach me. I jump.
“I’m so sorry, Meg. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Mark says.“Oh Mark, I’m so glad you’re here.” I hug him tightly.“How is Ben?” He asks.“I don’t know...” I shake my head, tears running down my face. I must look a
mess, but I don’t care. All I care about is Ben. “They rushed him in there so
I know it’s serious. Mark, I don’t know what I’d do without him.”“Meg, I don’t know what to say, except this.” Mark brushes the tears from
my cheeks. “Ben loves you with all his heart and soul. I’ve never seen him so
happy since long before Maria died. He’ll be okay, he’s strong and he
couldn’t bear to be parted from you.”“What if he has no choice?” I ask, despondancy setting in. “My life without
Ben would be absolutely nothing.”“You mustn’t think like that now.” He silences my doubts. “Ben needs you to
be optimistic like you always are. We should go in and see how he is.”“You go in. I’ll follow in a minute.” I say. I need to be alone with my
thoughts. Mark leaves. “Ben, you can’t leave me now, damn it. My heart
would stop beating if yours did.” The realisation of this is too hard to
accept and I break down in heavy sobs.A few minutes later, I turn around and go into the hospital, my eyes red and
sore from my tears. There I see my mom and dad waiting. I run to hug
them.“There, there, sweetie.” My mom holds me while I cry.“How did you know?” I look up at her, and then I see Mark smiling.“Don’t be mad at me, I called them just after they took Ben to the
hospital.” He explains. “I figured you needed them here.”“You are such an amazing friend, Mark.” I try to smile at him.“I’m only doing for you what you do for everyone else, Meg. We all love you.”
Mark rubs my shoulder to show his support.“Ben will be okay, honey.” Dad says. Just hearing those words from my
father makes me feel more hopeful, and I realise that I get my innate
strength from them.“Thanks, dad. I guess I should have more faith in our love.” I sigh.“Meg, love can be pretty hard to believe in. Even true love, so please don’t
beat yourself up.” Mom says, and I look at her face. She is smiling. “We’re
going to be here as long as you need us....”“Ms. Cummings?” The doctor comes up to me. “Ben’s fine, he’s asking for
you. He’s just got a bad concussion and I had to put three stitches in where
he fell.”“Thankyou so much, Doctor.” I smile for what seems like the first time in
ages. “I should go to him.”“Yes. Go.” Mom urges me, and I run all the way to Ben’s room. I can’t wait to
see him. I open the door. His face looks so beautiful, I just want to kiss
him all over.“Meg, what are you standing there for?” He is grinning from ear to ear.
“Come in and hug me.” I run to him, into those loving arms I know so well.
He feels so safe, so secure and so precious. “My, I’ve been hungry for those
beautiful lips of yours.” He lifts my chin up and looks into my eyes. “You’ve
been crying.”“I can’t keep anything from you, Ben.” I kiss his cheek. “I was just so
scared that Derek had killed you this time.”“Ssh, my darling Meg. I’m never going to leave you. I promise you.” He
reassures me. “But it has made me realise one thing, that life is precious
and we must live each day to the fullest. That’s why I’ve decided to bring
the wedding forward, to next week.”“I love you.” I squeeze his hand tightly.“Meg, there’s something else I have to say. I reported Derek to the police
and he’s been taken into custody.” He tells me. “His wife will care for the
twins, but I want to start again away from Sunset Beach with you.”“Where will we go?”“I don’t know, but as long as we’re together, it doesn’t matter. Because I
love you. You’re the only person I care about, and that means I have to love,
cherish and protect you from everything.” He says.“That sounds perfect, Ben.” My lips envelop his in a passionate kiss, filled
with excitement, lust and tenderness. I can’t wait for our wedding dayChapter 39
These last few days have been so perfect. Ben got out of the hospital four
days ago, and life has been so quiet. I drove him down to a hotel in Palm
Springs and we have been spending time just relaxing. We are getting married tomorrow so I am driving him back to Sunset Beach.
He isn’t saying a word to me. “What’s on your mind, Ben?” I ask him.“I don’t want to go back to that house. Derek has defiled it, I used to love
living there, now I hate it so much. There are too many painful memories.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I see him biting his lip to stop him from crying.“We don’t have to go back there. We could book into the Sea Breeze for the
night.” I smile, trying not to make such a big deal out of it. I want him to
feel completely at ease tomorrow. “We’re going away tomorrow to start our
new life so I don’t mind. As long as we’re together, that’s all that matters
from now on.I hear him sigh as I try to concentrate on the road ahead, but it is hard not
to. He gets more tense the nearer we get to Sunset Beach, and I know he
had nightmares last night. We didn’t make love, we just held each other
tightly.“Thanks, Meg, for everything.” He says. “I know there must have been
times you must have felt like running away from me, but you stayed.”“Ben, don’t you understand by now that I am a part of you so running away
would have caused me more pain. I love you with all my heart and soul. You
are my heart.” I blink back the tears. “We’re in this together. Your
problems are mine, like it or not, my lover.” I give a feeble laugh.“I love it, Meg, and I love you...” He closes his eyes and falls asleep. I am
relieved as it means he doesn’t have to face his fears just yet.I turn my thoughts to happy things, like our wedding. It is going to be a
small affair, with Mark, Casey, Michael, Vanessa and Gregory in the wedding party
with my mom and dad. I will be wearing a beautiful white dress, completely
different to the one I wore at my first wedding with Tim. I would have
loved a big wedding, but I don’t think either of us could cope with the
intrusion, people watching us to see if we were going to crack up at any
moment.I am so lost in my thoughts that I nearly miss the turn-off for Sunset
Beach. I pull up at the hotel, and lean over to kiss Ben.“We’re here, my darling.” I smile as I watch his sleepy eyes opening. “At the
hotel.”He looks up and sees the beautiful beach in front of him. “I needed that
sleep. Derek is finally gone from my nightmares.”“He’s not coming back.” I promise, this time with certainty. “We’d better go
in. We’ve got a lot to do before the wedding.”“I can’t wait until our wedding nights.” He smiles, and I know that his spirit
has returned. The following twenty four hours are so busy. I try on my dress, but my
thoughts are with Ben and our new life. I am looking forward to it, but at
the same time, I am a little scared of becoming a married woman, Ben’s
wife.......
***********************I am finally married now. I can’t believe it! I’m Mrs Ben Evans. That sounds
so good! Ben is kissing me tenderly on the lips, and I look at him. He is
smiling, a happy smile. This is the best present I could have hoped for!“You’re beautiful, Meg.” He whispers in my ear. “I love you so much. You’re
giving up so much for me.”“I’m giving up nothing, Ben.” I brush my fingers along the side of his
handsome face. “Without you, everything I have is worth nothing. I love you
too, more than you’ll ever know.”We turn to face our family and friends. They are all clapping, they know
what we’ve been through in the past three months and have very firmly
remained by our side.“Meg.” Mom embraces me. “You look gorgeous today, so beautiful. Dad and
I are so proud of you. We’ll miss you so much, but your husband needs you.
Just don’t forget us.”“How could I ever forget you?” I say, tears running down my face. I place
my white roses in her arms “You’re the one who encouraged me to live my
dreams, and I love you so much. You have to come to see us once we’re
settled in our new home.”“Where are you going?” Dad asks.“We’re going to London for our honeymoon, and then onto Venice for a few
days.” I smile. “And then we’re going to Sydney. Ben’s bought a property in
Bondi, I think he’s planning to start a new business there similar to ‘The
Deep’.”“We’re going to have a bit of a rest before we start work.” Ben joins me.
“I’ve got a friend in Australia who’s going to help us at first. I will miss
Sunset Beach though......” He stops suddenly.“Ben, what’s the matter?” I ask.“Sheila’s here, with the twins.” He says. “Let’s say hello.” We go over to
her. I don’t understand why we’re doing this, but I trust Ben. “Sheila, hi.”“Ben, I am so sorry.” She says, obviously embarrassed. “Derek didn’t tell
me what he was planning.”“That sounds like my brother.” He reaches into his pocket, and takes out a
piece of paper. “Here’s a cheque for you and the twins, just to help you get
on your feet without him, and if you have any sense you’ll stay away from
him.”“I love him, Ben.” She says, looking at the cheque. “One million dollars,
that’s too much.” I agree with her!“Susan and Clive are my family now, and I’d like to support them throughout
their lives.” He looks down at the twins, and smiles. “You’re going to need
somewhere to live. If you plan on staying here, I suggest you buy a property
on the beach. It’s ideal for children.”“We’re going back to Tennesse. The children love it there, and I have a big
family.” She says. “Thankyou so much for the money, we’ll put it to good
use.”I lean over and hug the twins. “Bye, Clive and Susan.”“Bye Auntie Meg.” Susan says. “You are my Auntie now, aren’t you?”“Yes, sweetie, I am.” I watch them leave, and hold Ben’s hand very tightly.
“Let’s go. Our flight leaves soon.”“Okay.” He turns around to kiss me. It is a kiss which dispels any sadness
of leaving immediately. We walk hand in hand to our car, stopping to say
goodbye and hug our friends. He opens the car door. “No regrets, Meg.”“No regrets, Ben.” I wipe my tears away and sit close to my husband. The
car moves off and I don’t look back In the distance, the sun is setting. Our
last sunset in Sunset Beach. Tomorrow we’ll watch the sun setting in London.
Our past is firmly behind us. There’s only the future now.......Chapter 40
“Ben, you practically pushed that porter out of our suite!” I exclaim. “I swear he knew
what was going on!”“We are newly-weds, Meg.” He pulls me closer to his body, and envelops me in a tender
kiss. “I couldn’t wait to get you by yourself.”I turn around and gasp. The room is full of white roses and delicate candles. Ben never
fails to surprise me. I turn back and look him in the eyes. “You are quite a guy, Mr.
Evans, I love you so much.”“I wanted to set the scene for our first night as a married couple.” He smiles. “I know
we haven’t made love for a while, because of me, and I wanted to make this night
special.” He lights the candles, and I dim the lights, breathing in the scent of my
favourite roses.“Waiting has made it very special, darling.” I say. “And we don’t need to make love all
the time to show our love to each other. That night in Palm Springs was so romantic,
just talking about our dreams.”“You told me that you want to have four children.” Ben laughs. “So, what do you say,
we get a head-start on that now?”“I’d love to.” I am so hungry for Ben, that I melt into his arms, my lips touching his and
my hands struggling to undo his trousers. I need to be close to him, so close that I
won’t be able to breathe on my own, that he’ll have to be my life-support, and I his. I
unbutton his shirt and he throws it in the corner. He, in turn, struggles to unzip my
black dress, he pulls it over my head and kneels down to pull my bra off with his teeth. He stands up and carries me to the four-poster bed. He puts me on the bed gently. We
don’t need any music as our bodies create their own rhythm.“Ben, don’t do this to me please. Make love to me now.” I whisper. He obliges me, and
his passion takes me to new heights I have only dreamed about. He rolls off me, exhausted by our passion. “Oh, Meg, you make me feel so good. I love
you so much, you beautiful woman.” His blue eyes are sparkling with love.“I love you with all my heart and soul, Ben.” I run my fingers through his thick dark
hair. “I can’t believe that we are finally married.”“The way we made love, I’m surprised.” He laughs, and leans over to kiss me again. “I
think the earth moved.”“I know my world moved, Ben.” I can’t take my eyes off him. “Want to take a shower?”“Uh uh.” He moans. “I can do one better than that. What would you say if I told you
this suite has a hot-tub?”“My dreams are coming true.” I say, smiling. “Lead me to it, Ben.”“I’ll just go and run it.” He swings his legs over the bed and I watch his perfect naked
body as he walks to the bathroom. I sigh with so much happiness. I’m alone with the
man of my dreams who just happens to be my husband. Never in my wildest dreams did
I ever imagine my dreams would become a reality.I close my eyes and listen to the water running. Suddenly I feel Ben’s wet hands scoop
me into his arms. Without a word he carries me to the hot-tub and puts me down in
the warm, bubbling water. He gets in next to me, and moves closer to me. Before I
can speak, his lips are very firmly on mine, and they work their way down my body. He
satisfies me in so many ways, and I want to be the one who takes the lead for once, to
give him pleasure.“Meg, don’t make me wait for you.” He says. “I want you now.” I lie back in the water
and he enters me. This time, it is very gentle and passionate as if he is trying to take
care of me and to prepare me for what is to come. “I love you!” The water is no obstacle to our love making.“That was a perfect start to our honeymoon, Ben.” I sigh, as I pour him a glass of
ice-cold champagne. “You deserve it.” I take a little sip of mine. “I can’t have too
much of that, it goes straight to my head.”“I think I’d like to see you drunk.” Ben slides nearer to me. “So, what do you think of
London?”“Ben! All I’ve seen is this room.” I laugh, as I tickle him under the arm-pits.“That’s what I meant.” His fingers attack my feet. What follows is a fight. We can’t
keep our hands off one another. The atmosphere becomes peaceful again as he helps me out of the tub. He holds me
close. Then he begins to sing to me very softly at first. He has a beautiful voice. I am in
awe as he sings in Spanish, it sounds like a lullaby, he rocks me back and forth. I can
feel every part of his body, and I can hardly breathe. I don’t want this moment to ever
end as he runs his fingers through my hair in the most sensual way possible, then he
stop singing. His wet lips kiss my neck as I lean backwards to enjoy his tender touch. I
turn my head so I can pleasure him in the same way. I bend down and run my lips
through his chest. He begins to hum, and dances with me back to the bedroom where
we lie down together on the bed. He runs his little finger down my neck.We fall asleep in each others’ arms and I awake first, refreshed by sleep. I look at
Ben’s face, he looks so peaceful, and I intend to ensure that the rest of our married
life is like this. He opens his eyes.“Did I dream that we got married?” He asks sleepily.“No, my darling, we are married.” I reassure him, as I take his precious hand in mine.“I’m glad, Meg.” He smiles at me. “I am so blessed to have you in my life.”“I feel exactly the same way, Ben.”“Do you want to get something to eat? I’m hungry.” He says, as he puts his legs over
the side of the bed, and walks confidently to the wardrobe. He is looking so confident
and happy for the first time in a long time.......************************I dress quickly and when I emerge from the bathroom, Ben is waiting for me. He is
wearing a suit, and looks as handsome as he did on the first day I fell in love with him.
Then I remind myself that I fell in love with his beautiful words over the Internet, the
place where our minds met although our bodies had yet to touch. It’s surprising that we
have come so far in such a short time, but I don’t think I could love anyone the way I
love Ben.He turns around when he sees me. “Meg, you look so beautiful.” He walks towards me,
and I walk towards him. We meet in the middle and embrace. He kisses me and I am
literally transported to another place, more beautiful than any in my imagination. I
can’t believe that our whole lives will be like this, but it will. Our love will endure
because our hearts were matched in heaven. It was kismet.......***************************************************************************
