Soul Mates
Chapter 1 - Starting Over
The morning was bone chilling and damp. Hard to believe it was the end of spring, it felt more like the beginning of winter she thought as she walked down the hill toward the Financial District. It had been six months since she left that New York apartment in the middle of the night, during that terrible storm and leaving only a note telling him it was over.
"How could I've been so wrong about him", she thought. At first he was so tender but that quickly changed when she moved into his place. Within a few months, he became jealous and controlling. Initially, she tried to convince herself that he was just being protective but when he insisted on selecting her wardrobe, her activities and even her friends, until she was completely isolated, she realized she had to leave.
Starting over was hard but thanks to friends like Jason McCarthy she found the courage to move to San Francisco and just recently began to feel like her old self again. She had met Jason at college when he dated her roommate for a short time and they quickly became great friends. Not only could he always make her laugh, he was her best friend. It always amazed her girlfriends that it was never more than that with Jason. He was gorgeous at five foot eleven, with light brown hair, not to mention the fact that he had the chiseled looks of a model and a charm that dazzled most women who met him.
After graduation, they moved to New York and shared a small apartment in SOHO for close to a year. Jason worked as a junior executive at Evans Communications and Meg was a free lance computer consultant. It was the best time in her life. They were inseparable, until Philip Martin. They met him at an art exhibition for new artists. It was his first show and extremely successful. As soon as he and Meg were introduced, it was love at first sight for both. The relationship between Philip and Jason always appeared strained but Jason insisted on putting his misgivings aside for Meg's happiness.
During the few months following the show Meg and Philip spent all their spare time together. Then, when Jason's job transferred him to the West Coast, she agreed to move in with Philip. She hated to see Jason move so far away but at least she was not alone. Unfortunately, that feeling of security was short lived. At first she attributed his temperamental behavior to his artistic nature but there was more to it than that. Much more.
When the offers to exhibit Philip's art stopped, he began drinking heavily and became physically abusive. Even though she had kept her finances separate from Philips and wasn't financially dependent, she couldn't bring herself to leave him. She was in love and for months believed that the situation would improve if she loved him enough during his tough times. Unfortunately she was wrong and paid a terrible price the night she left when he lost complete control. As usual Jason was there for support, offering her a place to stay until she decided what to do next.
For the first six weeks, after moving to San Francisco, she slept in Jason's spare bedroom while she worked as a consultant at the Bank of America and searched for her own place. She felt safe for the first time in months being with him but she needed to be on her own. Just when she was about to give up, a colleague at Jason's firm was transferred to Japan and was looking for someone to rent his condo with an option to buy. She couldn't turn it down.
It was an old Victorian Mansion, on Russian Hill, which had been converted into 4 separate units a few years back. At the security entrance was a pair of Iron and Glass doors that opened into a small black and white marble floored lobby. In the center of the room was an elevator, flanked by flowered plants encased in multi-colored oriental vases sitting on twin mahogany tables. The elevator's exterior had an elegant antique appearance and it's interior, cherry wood paneling with a discreet high tech influence. Because it opened into the foyer of each condo the elevator's interior contained a computerized keypad, which was programmed to stop only at the designated floor when the condo's unique code was entered. A matching console was located in each unit, allowing the occupant to admit guests at their discretion.
Meg's was the top floor condo that had an exquisite rooftop Japanese garden and a breathtaking view of the city. Directly below was a successful fashion model, Tracy Sanders who worked for the Ford Modeling Agency. She was a real beauty, twenty-two, blonde, from Boulder, Colorado. On the second floor was Steve Campton, a twenty five year old, Stock Broker and Junior Partner at Merrill Lynch, gorgeous, dark hair, six foot three, from Atlanta, Georgia. Finally, there was Randy Stanford, dirty blonde, barely twenty, six foot, a real jock and the son of a prominent San Francisco family who appeared to be more interested in the next party than a career, and had the trust fund to afford the lifestyle of his choice. Even with their different backgrounds, they had all become fast friends during the past few months.
She was so happy Jason convinced her to move to San Francisco, it was far enough away from the memories she wanted desperately to put behind her. He spent the first few months making sure she felt comfortable in her new surroundings, filling each weekend with activities all over the city. He made every event an adventure, whether it was a picnic in the park, a concert or a walk through the Japanese Tea Garden.
Unfortunately, he had been in Europe for the past two months setting up a new division for Evans Communications and she missed him terribly. He had called her three or more times a week but it wasn't the same. Now he was back. She was even more excited when he called last week, asking if she would be interested in a consulting assignment with his company. Her current project had just ended and couldn't wait to get the opportunity to work with him.
As she continued down the hill, she couldn't help but smile as the bay came into view. She loved this place, it was so different than any other that she had visited. It had all the appeal of other major cities, activities for every interest, great ethnic diversity, modern architecture in the downtown business section and most enchanting, the old world charm of the Victorian homes lining the hills.
Suddenly the clang of the Cable Car as it approached the corner stirred her out of her daydream. She quickly glanced at her watch and realized she was going to be late if she didn't take the ride as it approached.
Jumping onto the Car as it rolled by, she grabbed hold of the poll at the top of the car's stairs. It was no surprise that it was crowded, after all it was the height of morning rush hour. "What a great way to go to work. These Cable Cars are so unique, it was unimaginable that there was any better way to start a day. It felt more like a ride at an amusement park rather than a mode of transportation", she thought.
As the conductor approached, she leaned against the poll, retrieved the Cable Pass and flashed it as he wobbled past. Returning her hand to the poll, she smiled as she looked at the city, feeling the cool breeze on her face. "It's beautiful, isn't it?", she heard someone say in a soft British accent. Meg turned to find a very handsome dark hair man with incredible dark blue eyes standing behind her, holding onto the same poll above her hand.
She returned his smile. "Yes, yes it is. It's the most enchanting city that I've ever seen". She turned her eyes back to the view. "There's something so special....", but stopped before she finished the comment when she saw that she was at her destination. Without looking back, she jumped from the Car and ran toward the large building on the corner of California and Front streets. It was a magnificent modern steel and glass structure.

Chapter 2 - The New Job
She walked hurriedly through the lobby's tinted glass enclosure with its marble floors and indoor waterfall, toward the reception area. "May I help you?", asked the Security Officer sitting in front of a circular desk laden with video screens. "Yes, my name is Meg Cummings. I have an appointment with Jason McCarthy, Vice President of Information Systems", she replied smiling. He pointed to a nearby waiting area. "Please have a seat while I announce you." He watched as she moved to the large sofa and slowly removed her coat. She was wearing what appeared to be a very expensive designer suit that flattered her slender form.
He reluctantly returned his attention to the Computerized Directory and touched the Name on the screen that she had given him, which immediately dialed the pre-programmed phone number. He picked up the receiver. "Mr. McCarthy, this is Sam Johnson from Security. There's a Meg Cummings in the lobby, she says she has an appointment". He paused and waited for a response. "Yes, I'll send her up immediately". He replaced the receiver and smiled as he motioned to the young lady to approach. "He's expecting you Miss. At the end of the hall there is a bank of elevators, please take the one marked Express to the 37th Floor and give your name to the Receptionist".
"Thank You." She smiled, turned and walked down the hall. When she entered the elevator, she leaned against the back wall wondering what exciting adventures lay ahead. \line\line Stepping off the elevator, Meg stopped for a second looking around at the lavish surroundings and then approached the Male Receptionist speaking on the telephone. "Would you please hold?", he said into the phone and then pressed the mute button. "Ms. Cummings?". She smiled nodding. "Hi, I'm Tom. Would you please have a seat, Mr. McCarthy will be with you in a moment. May I get you something to drink?". "No thank you I'm fine." He released the mute and returned to his phone conversation but found it difficult to take his attention away from the young woman.
Moments later, Jason came through the glass doors smiling at Meg as he watched her leafing through her briefcase. He noticed Tom struggling to pull his eyes away from her, not that he could blame him. Meg was one of the most beautiful women he had ever known. She had so many great features. Her eyes were an incredible deep blue shade, she had long thick black hair and a figure that would be envied by most women. But that didn't even begin to describe how beautiful she was as a person. She was his best friend, not to mention most trusted and now she was back in his life. That was best of all.
"On time as usual", he said. She closed the case, stood and walked into his open arms, placing a kiss on his cheek. "Jason! I missed you so much". Returning the kiss, he replied, "You look wonderful. God, I've missed you too! Let's go into my office and I'll explain why I wanted you for this assignment". As they walked down the hall making small talk she watched him greeting people on the way. Meg couldn't help but notice the female office workers going out of their way to get Jason to notice them as he passed by. Even though they were only friends, she was fully aware of his great looks and the affect that he had on all types of women.
As they approached the door to his office, Jason winked at his very attractive secretary. "Anna, would you please bring us some coffee when you get the chance?" Meg walked into the office and sat in the chair in front of his desk, giggling. As Jason moved to the other side of the desk and sat down, he looked at her sheepishly. "What?"
"Nothing, really. I just think it's great that you asked her to get coffee when she had the time.", she responded still giggling. "Come on, I know that laugh. I know there's more". Meg stopped long enough to respond. "It's just that you'll never settle down, you love the attention too much". Jason couldn't resist laughing. "Well if I can't have you then what's the point?" Meg smiled as she reached into her briefcase, retrieving a pad and pen so she could take notes when Jason divulged his plan.
Suddenly, Anna appeared in the doorway with a tray of coffee and pastries. She placed the tray in the middle of the desk. "Will there be anything else?" "No, thank you Anna. This is great. Please hold all calls for the next two hours". "Oh I almost forgot, Mr. Evans called and would like you and Ms. Cummings to join him for lunch in the private dinning room."
He watched as she turned and left, then poured the coffee. "Cream? Sugar?" Meg reached for the cup saying, "No, just black. Thank you!" She was curious to know more about why he called. "So what is this all about? I'm dying to learn why you thought I would be perfect for this mysterious project. I have to tell you that I am so anxious to work with you again."
After taking a sip of coffee he responded, "Well, I need your expertise on a project that I've been assigned, which is why I called". Meg listened as he explained that his company's CEO, Jonathan Evans, required some research information regarding a competitor's company. He went on to say that they felt it would be better if they hired someone from outside the company to perform the task because of its sensitive nature. Jason further explained the work required that the individual selected have an extensive computer background, a proficiency in Merger's and Acquisitions and someone who could work directly with Jonathan. "Does it sound like something you would be interested in?" Meg took a deep breath and replied, "Are you kidding? It sounds like a wonderful opportunity."
Jason continued, "Well, I think you'd be perfect and I can't stress that this is highly sensitive. If Wall Street gets wind of this, they will speculate that Evans Communications is considering a merger and we don't want that to happen. That would have a negative affect on our....". Suddenly the phone rang interrupting him. "Anna, I asked you to hold all calls". He paused a moment, then continued, "Oh I'm sorry, by all means send him right in".
He hung up the phone and stood as the door opened. "Ben! Great timing, I was just briefing Jonathan's new assistant". Jason moved around to Meg's side of the desk. "Meg, I would like you to meet Ben Evans, President of our International Division, and Jonathan's son. Ben, this is Meg Cummings, a very dear friend of mine."
As she stood and turned, the notepad on her lap fell to the floor. Before responding, she bent down to pick it up at the same time Ben reached for the pad. "I'm so sorry", she said. "There's no need to apologize." He rose to his feet, handed her the pad and extended his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you". He paused, staring into her eyes and still holding onto her hand. "The Cable Car, right? I never forget a face, especially one so beautiful". Meg blushed. "Yes that's right. It's nice to see you again".
Jason couldn't help but laugh. "I should have known that you would have found a way to meet before I got a chance to introduce you two. And before she changes her mind about the job, I suggest you release her hand so it doesn't go numb old pal". "Oh, sorry", Ben said as he let her hand slip away. "I didn't mean to interrupt but Jason canceled our Racquetball game this morning saying that he couldn't miss this appointment, so I knew it had to involve an attractive woman. Of course I couldn't resist stopping by to introduce myself." Jason placed his arm around Meg, saying, "Be careful Meg, he can't stand it if I know someone he doesn't. He's so competitive, especially when it comes to beautiful women". Ben laughed. "I'm not that bad. Really. Anyway, welcome aboard and don't let him work you too hard", Ben said as he turned and left.
"He's quite impressive, isn't he", Jason said as they sat back down. She smiled saying, "Yes. Yes he is". "Well don't let those great looks and charm sweep you away, he's quite the ladies man and definitely not for you." "Believe me Jason, the last thing I need is another man. Least of all someone who likes the field as much as Philip did."

Chapter 3 - Green-Eyed Monster
"Okay, then let's get back to the subject at hand".
Jason continued going through the papers in the Project Folder as he described her assignment. Over an hour later he stood up and led Meg to the office that had been set aside for her. As he opened the door and walked inside, she followed close behind, looked around and gasped. The room was completely furnished with French Provincial furniture. "Jason this is gorgeous but I really don't need such an extravagant office".
Closing the door behind them, he walked to the desk and laid the keys in the tray holder. "Well you don't have a choice, Jonathan designed it himself and wants you to be close by." He pointed to a door to the right of her desk, saying, "That leads to a private hallway to Jonathan's office. "Are you saying that Mr. Evans instinctively knew what his new assistant would like?" Jason smiled sheepishly saying, "Not exactly. I told him that you would love it and would take the job." "Jason, you are so bad." "I know but that's why you love me. Now, there are two more items, your secretary's name is Lisa and most important, as far as anyone is concerned you're his new personal assistant. No one, other than Jonathan and myself know why you're really here. That includes Ben!" Meg noted the seriousness in his voice. "I understand completely".
"I realize this is a bit unorthodox but trust me there is a lot riding on this potential merger and we need your help. Now, I'll leave you alone so you can settled in." Jason opened the door, turned back saying, "Don't forget about our lunch with Jonathan. I'll be back at noon to pick you up." As he walked through the door and started to close it, he paused. "Oh, by the way, I'm glad you're on board." He smiled and disappeared.
Meg sat behind the beautiful Provincial desk and settled in as she reviewed the folder of information that Jason left. She met with Jonathan for lunch and then spent the remainder of the day making notes regarding her research strategy. It was almost eight when she noticed the time. "Well, I think that's enough for today", she thought locking the papers in the drawer. She placed the keys to her desk in the briefcase, closed the latch, turned off the lights and headed for the elevator. "Not bad for my first day", she thought.
For the next two months Meg continued the exhaustive job of researching everything about Dynacorp that she could find on the Web, in addition to the information she received from her contacts at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). So far both Evans Communications and Dynacorp appeared to have great potential as a merged corporation. "I am so glad Jason talked me into taking this contract. It is just what I need", she thought out loud as she leaned back in her chair.
It was hard to believe it had been just a couple of months. The weeks had passed so quickly and she was settling comfortably into the new job. She loved working with Jonathan, he was everything she had read about him and more. He had been reputed to be a financial genius with the Midas touch. Not only was he handsome, charming and highly intelligent, it was obvious that he loved and cared about the people that worked for him. A rare quality indeed, she thought. Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted as Lisa buzzed, announcing that Jason was on his way in to her office. "Thanks, Lisa! Why don't you go home I won't be needing you this evening and have a great weekend." As she released the intercom button, Jason came rushing through the door. "Meg, I'm so sorry I forgot to tell you that there is a party tonight and Jonathan wants us there", he said breathing hard. "A party? Jason, I can't. I have so much work to complete before Monday", she responded. "Sorry, this is more important and Jonathan insisted. Now, let's go". Jason picked up her coat and handed it to her as he ushered her toward the elevator.
"What's this all about?" Jason pressed the button for the Lobby saying, "I'm sorry Meg. I know that it's short notice but Jonathan called and reminded me that we have to attend this party so you can meet the players from Dynacorp. I have a limousine downstairs that will take you back to your place so you can change. I will pick you up in two hours". The Chauffeur held the door as she stepped inside, closed it and then slid behind the wheel. Jason leaned into the car's window. "Oh by the way, it's formal." The car pulled away and disappeared into the night.
A few hours later, they arrived at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. "The party is here?", Meg asked as she stepped out of the limousine. "It sure is. Jonathan loves this hotel, especially the Imperial Suite, which by the way is the entire 17th floor. Wait until you see the view", Jason said leading her through the flower laden lobby.
As, they entered the elevator, the operator tipped his hat. "It's nice to see you again Mr. McCarthy, Miss". Jason smiled. "Hi George, how's the family?" "Very well sir, thanks for asking". Jason turned to Meg and noticed her smiling at him. "What's that look all about?" Meg giggled saying, "I just love the way you look in a Tux".
Within minutes the doors opened to a private hallway. Stepping off the elevator, they were greeted by an older gentleman in a black tuxedo. As they approached, he smiled and opened the large carved wooden doors into what looked to be the party of the millennium. Immediately inside the room, a woman, dressed in a starched black and white uniform, stood with extended arms silently requesting her wrap. Jason watched as Meg slide it off her shoulders. "Have I told you how beautiful you look?", he whispered. "Yes, but I don't mind hearing it again."
She was wearing a Red Satin strapless gown and a small diamond necklace that accentuated her slender throat. Her hair was pulled back from her face in a soft twist, held by an antique platinum comb.
He squeezed her hand. "Relax, Jonathan loves to throw lavish affairs. Remember, you're here to meet the Players you've heard so much about". Meg released a soft sigh and followed his lead as they entered the main room and approached Jonathan, who was chatting with a number of people.
Jason leaned close to her ear and whispered, "The attractive woman in the blue beaded gown is Susan Brooks, CEO of Dynacorp and to her left, is her CFO, Frank Shapiro." "Jason, Meg, I'm glad you could make it!", Jonathan said smiling, shaking his hand and placing a soft kiss on Meg's cheek. "You all know Jason McCarthy, but I would like you to meet Meg Cummings, my new personal assistant. Meg, I'd like to introduce Susan Brooks and Frank Shapiro from Dynacorp". Turning to the two men on his right he said, "This is Steven Chong and Arthur Dew from the Bank of Hong Kong." She smiled and returned their greeting. "Well, why don't you two go and enjoy the party."
Jason guided Meg to the other side of the room to a small group having what appeared to be a very serious conversation. "Didn't anyone tell you this was a party?", he laughed, placing a hand on the back of the man closest to him. Excuse me for interrupting but Jason wanted me to introduce his new assistant, Meg Cummings.
They turned to face her as he started the introductions, "Meg, I'd like you to meet Kathleen Brown, Corporate Comptroller, Richard Hanson, our lead Corporate Attorney and Mike Andersen, President of Evans US Subsidiaries. "It's a pleasure to meet you all", Meg said smiling as she shook each of their hands. "Okay you can go back to that heated discussion, we're going to get something to drink", he said laughing as they walked away.
"We'll take two of those", he smiled as he approached a waiter and picked up the champagne, handing one to Meg. "I need to talk to someone, will you be okay for a while without me?" She smiled and whispered, "I'll be fine. I think I'll go to the terrace and check out the view".
She watched as Jason walked through the crowd, shaking hands and kissing the ladies like a politician running for office. "He's such a catch", she thought as she turned and headed toward the French doors leading to the balcony. The young man in a tuxedo, appearing to be standing guard, opened them as she approached. "Thank you".
It was a very warm night for a San Francisco spring. She walked to the edge of the iron railing and sighed looking at the stars. "What a beautiful evening. I don't think I've ever seen a more seductive city", she said not realizing that she was speaking aloud.
"I agree!", he said in a soft tone. She was startled by the voice and quickly turned in its direction. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude but I couldn't help but respond." He walked out of the shadows and she immediately felt herself blush as he approached. "That's okay, I don't usually talk to myself", she giggled. "It is something special though isn't it? She couldn't resist responding, "Yes, it is. I don't think I've ever seen anything as seductive." What an enchanting smile, he thought. "It's nice to see you again". "It's nice to see you too, Mr. Evans", she replied. "Please call me Ben." Meg smiled and turned back to the view of the city. "It's even more beautiful at night, if that's possible. It's strange how this place makes me feel. It's as though I belonged here all my life. Isn't that odd?"
Ben smiled as he moved his eyes up and down her slender form. "Not really, I feel the same way." She could feel the warmth of his body as he moved closer and placed a hand on the railing to her right, slightly brushing against her arm. "So, how do you like your new job? I hope Jonathan isn't working you too hard". Meg smiled saying, "No, not at all. I love the work". "That's great because my dad tells me that he doesn't know what he did before you came aboard." Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, "If I didn't know better I would think he was smitten. Not that I can blame him".
Meg tried to resist the sensation of being seduced by his velvet voice. "Oh, so are you saying that because I'm a woman, it couldn't be my talent?" "Not at all. I just know Jonathan. He loves strong and intelligent woman, not to mention extremely attractive". She couldn't resist smiling. "Well, I love the job and Jonathan is wonderful to work for but I'd be more comfortable if we could change the subject?" "I don't mind, I'm actually more interested in knowing why such a beautiful woman is out here in the moonlight, alone?" Meg struggled to catch her breath. "Jason was right about you", she responded. "Oh, really? What did he say? I'm curious." Meg turned and saw that magic smile and found it almost impossible to resist. "He said that you were quite the ladies man and...." Ben moved closer. "And what? Tell me please, I really want to know." "He said that you loved the pursuit." "Does that reputation scare you?" She laughed before responding. "No, not at all. Why would it?" "So does that mean you could be interested in me?" "Oh, I doubt we would be a very good match." "Really? Why not?" "Well, for one thing I was once involved with someone who loved the chase even when he was with me and I didn't enjoy it. For another, I doubt I'm your type. Besides, from what I hear you're doing just fine."
Ben looked into her eyes and smiled. "Maybe I just haven't found the right lady before now". He moved closer to her mouth, as she stood there frozen not wanting to break the spell that had been cast. Suddenly they were startled by a voice behind them. "I hope I'm not interrupting". Meg stepped away from Ben, saying, "No, not at all. We, uh, we were just discussing my new job".
Cassie moved toward him and took his arm as he said, "Cassie, I'd like to introduce my father's new personal assistant, Meg Cummings". Meg knew immediately who she was. "It's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Andrews. I've seen your picture on so many Fashion Covers." Cassie glanced at Meg and then turned her attention back to Ben. "Richard and Chloe are asking for you. You don't mind Ms. Cummings, do you?" Meg could hear the tension in her voice. "Please don't let me keep you, I need to get back to my date too. It was a real pleasure Ms. Andrews", Meg said as she walked past her and rejoined the party.
"So tell me, is she your next conquest?" "Don't be silly. She works for Jonathan. I was just trying to be friendly, he responded. "Let's join the party, what do you say?", he said, placing a love tap on her rear as they walked into the main room.
During the next hour Ben's eyes followed Meg as she moved around the party. He smiled to himself as he watched the men being seduced by her beauty and the women cringe with jealousy, trying unsuccessfully to dislike her but being captivated by her subtle charm. She was one of those rare women that both men and women loved.
Ben continued watching as Meg excused herself from Jason's conversation and disappeared down the hall. Suddenly, he felt a tug at his dinner jacket. "Ben, you didn't hear a word I've said. Did you?" Cassie was well aware of where his attention was focused and was not amused at his latest fascination. "If you're so interested, why don't you go after her?"
He pulled away from her hand saying, "Why don't you put that green-eyed monster back in the box for just a moment. She's my father's new assistant and I plan on learning everything I can about her. He didn't hire her just for her computer skills. Besides, this is not your concern, now excuse me, I need to refresh my drink".
Meg opened the door at the end of the hall and gasped when she saw Jonathan and Susan in a passionate embrace. "Oh, I'm so sorry, I was looking for, uh, it's not important. Please forgive me". She turned to leave.
"Meg, wait. Please, come in! We need to talk."
She was about to step inside when she heard Ben's voice a few feet away. "Are you lost?" Before, he reached the entrance to the study, she looked back toward Jonathan and Susan, smiled and closed the door. "Uh, yes. I was looking for my wrap, but I took a wrong turn." Ben reached out his hand. "Come with me. I think I can help." They walked toward the main room and he motioned to the woman at the front door. "Sara, would you please get Ms. Cumming's wrap?" Within seconds she returned and handed it to him. As he moved the wrap up her arms toward her shoulders, he brushed his fingers along her soft skin and whispered, "I'm sorry we were interrupted earlier just when we were getting to know each other better." Meg turned toward him saying, "Ben, please don't touch me like that. I don't enjoy playing sexual games and I doubt Cassie would appreciate your attention either." Before he could respond, Jason interrupted. "So there you are. Sorry Meg, I couldn't pull away from that bunch. But I see my old pal has been keeping an eye on you." "That's okay, I haven't been waiting long. Well, Good Night Ben, thank you for your help." "You're welcome, good night. I'll see you tomorrow Jason."
While he watched as they disappeared into the elevator, Cassie moved behind him and said, "Well it doesn't appear as though you were able to charm her into telling you anything". "Not now Cassie." She ignored the warning and continued teasing. "This must be a first for you. A beautiful woman like Meg not interested in the dashing eligible Ben Evans." Ben turned to face her. "Are you going to get off this anytime soon? I told you my interest is strictly professional".
"Ben, don't be angry. It's just that I get so jealous when I see you paying attention to other beautiful women". She slid her hand under the lapel of his jacket and softly stroked his chest. "Let me show you how sorry I am. Let's leave, I promise to make it up to you." "Fine, the party is over anyway". He placed his arm around her waist and headed toward the elevator.
Moments later, Ben followed Cassie into her apartment, feeling as though he wanted desperately to be somewhere else. "What's wrong with me?", he thought as he moved to the portable bar and poured a drink.
"Ben, I know you're upset with me for teasing you about Meg but I said I was sorry." "I don't want to discuss Meg with you." "That's fine with me, I'd rather concentrate on us. Why don't you relax and give me a few minutes", she whispered, pressing her breasts against his back. "I've missed you, just let me show you how much. I'll be right back". Her hands pulled away as she turned and walked toward the bedroom, pausing only to insert a CD into the player.
Ben moved to the couch and sat sipping his drink as he looked around the room. He couldn't help thinking how much it reflected Cassie's personality. Strong, independent and most of all self indulged. They had been seeing each other for over six months and they seemed to be well suited. Both of their careers were quite hectic, they traveled in the same circles and loved their single status. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes thinking he would have to be crazy not to feel complete, yet lately he couldn't shake the feeling that something important was missing from his life.
Suddenly, he felt her hands softly massaging his shoulders and kissing the back of his neck. "Doesn't that feel good?", she whispered. He could feel the hardness between his legs as the fantasy that it was Meg stirring his passion continued to flood his thoughts.
As he opened his eyes, he saw Cassie moving around to face him. She was wearing a thinly laced dark green negligee, which barely covered her breasts. He couldn't help but think that most men would kill to have her, even just for a moment. So why was he wishing it was Meg standing in front of him. He watched as she slipped the straps off her shoulders and let the negligee slowly fall off her voluptuous breasts and down over her thin waist to the floor. "Well that look tells me you like my surprise." She placed her hands on his face, leaned down and kissed him passionately. He was so aroused that he found it hard to resist her seduction. "Ben, I want you so much, please don't make me wait", she said as she moved over his lap. "Let me show you how much you mean to me". He couldn't deny his needs any longer. Ben slid his arms underneath her legs and carried her to the bedroom as she kissed his neck.
After laying her on the bed, he stepped back and discarded his clothes. He then moved over her on the bed, supporting his weight with one arm, leaned down and kissed her mouth. "Oh Ben I need you so much", she pleaded as she guided his hand down her body igniting the fire within her. Cassie's moans became more urgent as Ben continued his pleasure assault up and down her slender form. "Oh God Ben, I can't believe what you do to me". Within minutes they both collapsed in sexual exhaustion.
Cassie lay on top of Ben's chest, circling his nipple with her fingers, saying, "Ben that was so wonderful! I'm going to miss you so much when I'm in Milan. Are you sure you can't join me for a week?"
He stroked her hair wanting to respond differently but knew something had changed. "It's only for a month. You'll be so busy you won't even have time to miss me. Now, let's get some sleep, you have an early flight tomorrow". Within minutes they were sound asleep.

This Chapter picks up after Meg accidentally interrupts a passionate embrace between Jonathan and Susan and Ben spends the night with Cassie.
Chapter 4 - Sometimes Losing Is Better Than Winning
Walking up the front stairs of Meg's building Jason squeezed Meg's waist saying, "Jonathan wanted you to know that you charmed everyone this evening, especially Susan Brooks." "I'm glad. Would you like to come up for a nightcap?" "Not tonight, I have an early Racquetball game with Ben and he loves to beat me, so I need some sleep." Meg chuckled. "Sounds like you take that game very serious". "You have no idea. We usually set the terms for the winner before each game." He placed a kiss on her cheek and started down the stairs. "Don't forget, I'm taking you to dinner tomorrow night at Jardiniere. I'll pick you up around eight."
"Sounds great. Good luck tomorrow." She entered the lobby and took the elevator to her unit. "It's going to feel so good to crawl under the covers", she thought walking into the bedroom. Stepping into the closet, she kicked off her heels, removed her clothes and retrieved a blue silk robe from the hanger. "Thank God for weekends", she said releasing a deep sigh.
As she tied the belt of her robe, the telephone ran. "Who can that be?" She picked up the receiver. "Hello?" "Meg, its Jonathan. I know it's late but we need to talk. I hate to interrupt your weekend but would you please meet me in my office tomorrow morning around eight?" "Certainly, is there anything wrong?", she asked. "No, it's just that I need to explain some things about my relationship with Susan Brooks. So I'll see you then?" Meg was intrigued. "I'll be there. Good night." She hung up the phone, discarded her robe and slid under the covers.
"Morning Mr. Johnson", Meg said as she ran toward the Security Desk in the Lobby. "Hello, Miss! Working weekends now?" Meg smiled saying, "No, I'm just here for a quick meeting. But I knew you would be here so I brought you some doughnuts. They're your favorite. Chocolate Cream." Sam laughed and thanked her as she ran toward the elevator.
As she came off the elevator and headed down the hallway, she could see that the only light was coming from Jonathan's office. She knocked on the partially opened door to his office. "Meg, thanks for coming. Please have a seat. Can I offer you some coffee?", he asked. "Thank you, I would love a cup."
Meg moved to the chair in front of his desk and sat down. As he handed her the cup of coffee, he could see that she was somewhat uneasy. "I didn't mean to sound so ominous last night when I asked you to meet me to discuss Ms. Brooks. Uh, I mean Susan. As you know, the research that you've been doing for me regarding Dynacorp is highly confidential and what I'm about to tell you is also". Meg listened as Jonathan explained that he and Susan had been secretly seeing each other for months and that if the news of their relationship were to be known, the negotiations for the Merger would be negatively affected. He continued saying that until last evening, no one knew he and Susan were more than business associates, and they were hoping to keep it secret until the Merger was official.
"First of all, I would like to apologize for placing you in such an awkward situation. I also want to thank you for the discretion that you showed when Ben showed up. I hate keeping things from him but it's a sensitive subject. I hope you understand." Meg continued listening as he explained how close Ben was to his mother and since it had been only two years since she past away, he wasn't comfortable discussing this new relationship. "I know I can depend on you to keep this confidential Meg and I want you to know how much I appreciate this." Jonathan stood and walked her to the elevator. "Thanks for coming in today. I hope you understand that it wasn't a topic I wanted to discuss over the phone." Meg smiled. "You can trust me, Jonathan." He patted her on the back saying, "If I didn't know that before last night, I do now. So get out of here and enjoy the rest of the weekend. I'll see you on Monday."
Meg left his office, releasing a deep sigh. "Thank God Jason is taking me out tonight, I need to relax. How do I manage to get into situations like this? After this Merger I'm going to need a nice long vacation." She glanced at her watch and realized she had plenty of time to do some shopping for a new dress.
A few hours later she returned home, carrying so many packages it was difficult to open the Lobby Door. "Looks to me like you need an extra hand", Steve said laughing. "Oh, are you a sight for sore eyes." Meg handed him a couple of packages, as they walked through the lobby and into the elevator. When it opened into Meg's unit, she headed toward the bedroom saying, "Steve, just drop them on the bed if you don't mind. Hey, if you can you stay for a few minutes, I've got some great Iced Tea". "Thanks, I'd love some as long as we can have it outside in the garden. It's such a warm day." He stepped through the open French Doors and onto the patio. "Meg if you ever get tired of this view, I'd be happy to swap condos."
"Not a chance. But you're welcome to lay down on a chaise and get some sun, I'll be back in a few minutes", Meg said as she walked into the kitchen. A few minutes later she joined him with the Tea and homemade cookies. "I was hoping you would stop by today, I made your favorite. Oatmeal Raisin." Steve laughed, "Uh oh, what's wrong? You usually don't bake unless you have trouble sleeping. So what's bothering you on such a beautiful day?" "Nothing really. I had to go into the office this morning for a meeting with my boss and I guess I was a little nervous so I made the cookies before I left. It turned out to be a minor issue and now I'm looking forward to a very relaxing dinner tonight with Jason."
She sat down in the deck chair next to Steve, leaned her head back and let the sun warm her face. "God, this feels so great. I'm glad you suggested it." So Steve do you have any plans for this evening?" "Actually I do. I met someone last night at a party in Carmel and we're going to Julius Castle tonight." "Sounds great, what does he do?" "He's an ER Doctor at SF General and seems really nice. Randy met him at a surfing contest and introduced us. His name is Matt Stillman. I am so glad I moved here from Atlanta. Being gay made it so much more difficult to meet people in that city." "Steve, have you ever been in love?" "Just once but he never could get use to my hectic traveling schedule. And to think that my mother always told me that being gay would make relationships difficult", he said laughing.
After about two hours of exchanging stories about their week, Steve looked at his watch and gasped, "Oh jeez, I need to go, I have so much to do before tonight" "Yeah, me too. I'll see you tomorrow at Tracy's for brunch." As Steve walked into the elevator, he turned and yelled, "Don't forget, you're suppose to bring the pastries this weekend and make sure you get some of those great sourdough rolls from Boudin's."
Hours later, Meg stepped out of the shower, dried her hair and began to dress. Standing in front of her full-length mirror in a dark blue silk panties and bra, she stepped into the low cut multi-colored French Silk dress that she bought earlier in the day. "I think I'll leave my hair down tonight", she thought as she smoothed the dress over her thighs and stepped into a pair of dark blue high heels. "Well, I'm on time for a change, Jason will be thrilled", she giggled.
All of a sudden Meg heard the buzzer. "Jason, I'll be right down", she said pressing the intercom's button, then took the elevator to the lobby. As the doors opened, Jason stood in front of her shaking his head. "I don't believe it, you're ready." "Very funny, I hope you brought your wallet, I'm starved." He slid his arm around her waist saying, "Oh I brought something a whole lot better." Meg stopped and gave him a confused look. "I'll explain when we get to the restaurant. It's a surprise and I think you're going to enjoy it."
There was a cab waiting that took them to the entrance of Jardiniere. As they approached the Maitre d', Jason leaned down and whispered, "Did I tell you that you look absolutely stunning?" "Yes, but you can tell me again", Meg said smiling. The Maitre d' greeted them and informed Jason that his table was ready and his guest was waiting.
"What guest? I thought we were having dinner alone? Oh Jason, don't tell me this is a business dinner." Before he could respond, they approached the private table in the corner facing the terrace. She immediately knew who the dark hair gentleman was, even though his head was turned toward the window. It was Ben. As they moved to the table, Meg couldn't help but think how handsome he looked wearing a pair of black slacks, a royal blue shirt and black jacket. "Ben, I see you made it!", Jason said as he extended his hand. Ben stood, returning the handshake. "I always pay my debts." He immediately turned to Meg. "It's nice to see you again. You look lovely. But you also look surprised, I hope you don't mind my joining you this evening." "No, not at all."
As they sat down, Ben explained how his loss to Jason at the Racquetball match earlier in the day meant that the loser pay for dinner. Jason interrupted. "And since Cassie was out of town I felt sorry for the poor guy, plus I thought it was a great way to collect my winnings. Especially, if it costs Ben even more by having to treat the two of us. So order anything you want, just make sure it's the most expensive item on the menu."
They laughed as the waiter handed them the menus while telling them the specials for the evening. After selecting their meals, Ben ordered a bottle of Domaine Chandon. When the waiter left, Ben turned to Jason saying, "Don't give me that look Jason. Sometimes I like to give our competition a little business." "Meg, I don't know if Jonathan told you but they own a Winery in the Napa Valley." "No he didn't, how exciting. I don't mean to change the subject but do you two always take your games so serious?" They both laughed and answered yes at the same time.
After the waiter poured the champagne, Ben lifted his glass for a toast. "You have no idea how hard this is to say but here's to Jason's first win in over three months." As they clanged their glasses, Jason couldn't help but respond. "Well, you better get use to it old pal. I have a feeling my luck has started to change."
Two hours later the last course had been consumed and Ben and Jason were still debating who would win the next match. Meg just sat there shaking her head and laughing. She never realized how truly close Jason and Ben were until that night. They seemed more like brothers than friends. She couldn't help but think that her initial opinion of Ben might have been wrong. If he was really like the Playboy image he portrayed, Jason wouldn't have such respect for him. There was no question why so many women were attracted to Ben, he seemed to have it all and yet there was something about him that seemed so sad. Maybe he was just missing Cassie, she thought.
In the middle of the discussion Jason's cell phone rang. "Excuse me. Hello, this is Jason McCarthy." He paused listening for a few minutes. "Okay, I understand. Let me make some calls and I'll get back to you within the next half hour." He hung up and excused himself from the table saying that he needed to take care of some business but that it wouldn't take long. "Ben, why don't you take Meg to the Terrace lounge for an after dinner drink, I'll meet you there." Ben nodded, paid the bill and led Meg to the Terrace.
"Oh, this is lovely", Meg said as they sat near the Terrace wall. She thought to herself that it was all so perfect, the music, the beautiful stars and most of all the company. After she had been seated, he moved to the chair closest to her and sat down. "I'm glad you didn't object to my joining you this evening, especially after how I acted at Jonathan's party. I was out of line and I do apologize." Meg smiled saying, "It's completely forgotten. Besides, Jason thinks the world of you and he really seems to enjoy your competitive games". "Well, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed losing a bet as much as I did today." "You certainly enjoy the competition", she said. Ben chuckled, "Even more so when the stakes are so rewarding." "At the risk of having you change your opinion of me, would you like to dance?" "I'd love to." He stood, took her hand and led her to the dance floor.
As they began to sway to the rhythm of the soft music, Meg rested her head against the side of Ben's face. He took a deep breath, taking in her fragrant scent, then held her so close that he could feel her beating heart. She felt so comfortable in his arms and was fully aware of how aroused she felt simply by the embrace. "Meg, when I first saw you this evening you took my breath away. How do you manage to look more beautiful each time I see you?" Meg blushed saying, "You certainly know how to flatter a woman. It's no wonder you're considered to be one of the most eligible bachelors in the city". "Don't believe everything you hear, it's just an attempt to sell papers." He moved his mouth close to her ear and whispered, "Do you believe in love at first sight?"
Meg paused for a few seconds before responding. "I use to, but no, not anymore. Do you?" He didn't need time to think about it, he was holding the answer in his arms. But before he could respond, he heard her say, "You don't have to answer that, it's obvious that you and Cassie are meant for each other. I'm sure you miss her very much". "Well, what about you Meg? I find it hard to believe that you've never been in love. I'm sure there have been many men that have fallen in love with you." Before she could answer, the music stopped. Meg slowly pulled away, turned and walked toward their table as Ben followed.
After they were seated, Meg wanted desperately to change the subject, the memories of Philip were still too raw. "Jason tells me Cassie is in Milan for a Photo Shoot. What an exciting career she has. One of my neighbors and close friend, Tracy Sanders, is also a model and she adores the work."
"Oh, Cassie loves her job and will be away until the end of the month but I'd rather talk about you. Tell me, how is it that Jason talked you into moving here from New York? It couldn't be just because of the climate, or are you running away from a broken heart?", he said smiling. Meg couldn't help but reflect back on the day that she left that city. Philip was so drunk and violent. All of a sudden Ben's voice stirred her out of the reverie. "Meg, did I say something wrong?" "Uh, I'm, uh... Sorry, it just seems like a lifetime ago." He sensed that there was more to it than she was willing or ready to talk about.
"Hey you two, I'm so sorry that took so long", Jason said as he approached. "I hate to do this but I need to get to the office. It seems there's a minor crisis and it has to be taken care of immediately." Meg stood, picking up her purse. "That's no problem, let's go." It was obvious to Ben that she was relieved that Jason had come to her rescue, yet it only made him more curious what she was really running from, or whom.
As they exited the restaurant, Jason turned to Meg. "Would you mind if I put you in a separate cab since we're going in opposite directions?" Before she could answer, Ben interrupted. "Jason, I'll be more than happy to see her home, as long as that's okay with Meg" "That would be fine, if you're sure it's not out of your way?" "Thanks Ben, I appreciate it. Meg, I'll call you tomorrow", Jason said as he hailed their cabs.
When they arrived at Meg's Condo building, Ben asked the driver to wait so he could walk her to the door. "This looks like a great place." She pressed the button for the elevator. "It really is. I'd ask you up for a nightcap but I'm really very tired." "Maybe another time", he replied. As the doors opened, she turned saying, "Well, thank you for a wonderful evening!" Ben paused for a moment looking into her eyes, then placed a finger under her chin and moved closer to her mouth. "It was my pleasure and I hope it's the first of many." He placed a soft kiss on her lips, turned and left.
Within minutes of stepping out of the shower, Meg placed the towels back on the rack, walked into the bedroom and slipped under the comforter. She closed her eyes and released a soft sigh. "Oh this feels so nice." As she lay there, she couldn't help but think about Ben's kiss. It was so soft and sweet. There was no doubt why so many women fell her his spell, she thought as she drifted off to sleep.
It was almost 8am when Meg rolled onto her stomach, unconsciously resisting the sound of the morning doves in the garden. Suddenly, she felt his hand slowly pull the comforter down to her waist as his fingers brushed lightly against her skin. He paused for a moment before placing his wet lips at the base of her spine, then kissed his way toward the back of her neck. When he reached her ear, he placed his hands on her shoulders and turned her onto her back. Slowly she opened her eyes and saw him. It was Ben. Without saying a word, he smiled and pressed his lips against hers. The kiss was so soft at first, then turned more passionate as he moved from her top lip to the bottom, sucking lightly while his hand gently massaged her breast. Meg could feel the ache between her legs growing more immediate as he moved his hand down from her breast, over her soft flat stomach and between her thighs. She pulled away from his mouth moaning louder with each pass of his hand. As she opened her legs wider, silently urging him to enter her, he pushed his fingers deep inside her heated center, encouraging the orgasm that she wanted so desperately.
Suddenly, Meg was jolted out of her erotic dream by the sound of the clock radio's buzzer. Hitting the alarm in frustration, she rolled onto her side and sighed. "God, what was that all about?" Even though she was very much alone, she could feel the blush in her cheeks as she thought about the dream. "I've got to get him out of my mind", she thought as she jumped out of bed and stepped into the shower. "Well I better get a move on or Tracy will kill me if I don't bring the pastries, especially since I forgot last weekend." Meg finished her shower, dressed and headed for the bakery.
A couple of hours later she stepped off the elevator into Tracy's condo. "Well, it's about time Meg, I hope you brought those sourdough rolls", Steve grumbled. "Good morning to you too Steve. And no I didn't forget." She leaned down kissed him on the cheek and dropped the bag on his plate. "God, these smell so good. Thanks!" "I'm sorry if I'm late but there was such a crowd at Boudin's this morning. So to make up for it, I also got you some of those Cinnamon rolls that you love. Just to keep you happy."
As Steve laughed looking through the bakery bag, Meg grabbed for the "Arts and Entertainment" section of the paper. "Then you won't mind if I read this before you do." "Let her have it Steve, otherwise she'll whine all morning", Tracy said as she came from the kitchen carrying a platter of scrambled eggs in one hand and hash browns, bacon and sausage in the other. "Okay, so where is Randy?"
Steve looked up from his paper saying, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, he called earlier. A friend of his from out of town stopped by this morning and they went to the wharf for breakfast, so it's just us." "In that case, help yourselves", Tracy said placing the platters in the center of the table. "Tracy, I thought models ate like birds. How is that you can eat and never gain any weight?" "I guess I'm just lucky Steve."
Meg took some eggs and turned her attention to Steve. "So, how was your date?" "It was pretty good, unfortunately it was cut short when he got paged by the hospital and had to...." Before he could finish, Tracy interrupted. "Wait, what did I miss? Is this someone new?" Steve took a sip of coffee before continuing. "Yes, I was telling Meg that I met him at a party a few nights ago. His name is Matt Stillman, he's an ER doctor at SF General and we had a great time. But as I started to say, the hospital called and the evening was cut short. So we agreed to try again next weekend. We're going sailing on his friends yacht to Catalina. Now, what about you Meg, I thought you were having dinner with Jason?" "I did", she responded. "Oh really? So who was that gorgeous guy that I literally ran into as I was coming up the front steps last night? He looked like he was in a daze." Steve continued to tease. "From the look on his face, it must have been some dinner." Meg couldn't stay silent any longer. "You are so nosy. His name is Ben Evans and he's a close friend of Jason's. He also works for Evans Communications and he's my Boss's son." "Whoa, is this the same Ben Evans, San Francisco's most eligible bachelor and who's dating her highness, Cassie Andrews?", asked Tracy. Steve laughed saying, "Meow!"
"Yes, the very same and no he wasn't my date. He joined Jason and I last night because Cassie is in Europe on a photo shoot and he lost a racquetball bet with Jason, so he treated us to dinner. He took me home because Jason had an emergency at the office and was just being a gentleman." Steve folded his paper and winked at Tracy. "Well, from the look on his face when he left here last night, I would say that not only is he no longer interested in Super Models, he's off the market entirely, thanks to our Meg."Meg shook her head laughing as she took the last sip of her coffee, stood up and headed toward the elevator saying, "That's my cue to leave. I have some work I need to get done before tomorrow." As the elevator doors were about to close, Meg placed a hand on one of the doors stopping them in midstream.
"By the way Steve, no matter what you say, he's not interested in me. He was just being a friend." She smiled, then released the door. Steve laughed, picked up the business section saying, "Yeah and I'm really not gay!" "So do you really think this Ben Evans is interested in our Meg?", Tracy asked as she pulled the paper away from his eyes. "Well, from the look on that guy's face last night, I'd say he's hooked." Tracy laughed saying. "That's great, I hate that bitch Cassie. This is going to give her wrinkles. I love it." "Ouch! That's harsh Tracy, even for you. " "Steve, you wouldn't say that if you ever met her. I heard she got her Super Model status after the head of the modeling agency that represented her, who she was dating, called in some favors. She quickly dropped him when she met Ben Evans and learned that he was heir to his family fortune. Lately she's been telling anyone who will listen that Ben Evans is on the verge of proposing marriage." Steve shook his head saying, "Well, he did have the look of a man in love when he left here last night. I'm just afraid it's not Cassie who he's in love with. My money is on Meg".
For the next two weeks, Jonathan brought Ben and the other company officers up to speed regarding the possible merger. He also explained that all requests from Meg for additional information, be supplied without delay. It was clear that she had his complete confidence. The weekend before the initial meeting with Dynacorp officers, Meg spent all of her time assembling the reports that Jonathan needed for his Monday meeting with Dynacorp. It was almost midnight on Sunday by the time she completed her final notes and climbed into bed.
Around seven the next morning Meg arrived in Jonathan's office to review the reports she had compiled. "Morning Meg, help yourself to some coffee and let's get started." They spent the next hour and a half reviewing the data. Jonathan closed the folder and smiled. "This information is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you." "I'm happy you're pleased, I know how important this merger is to you and the company." Jonathan moved toward Meg and placed his hands on her shoulders. "I also want you to know how much Susan and I appreciate the fact that you've kept our relationship secret. I know it hasn't been easy hiding this from Jason and Ben". He leaned down and placed a kiss on her cheek. Just then, Ben walked into the office. "Oh, sorry, it appears that I am interrupting." "Not at all, I was just telling Meg what a great job she's doing. But we need to go, it's getting late", he said as he ushered them toward the conference room.
"Everyone is waiting, Mr. Evans", said Eleanor, Jonathan's secretary, as she escorted them into the room. Ben watched as Jonathan positioned Meg to his right at the conference table, silently establishing her importance to the group. "Why do I get the feeling that his interest in her is more than just professional", he thought. "Good morning. Please be seated, we have a great deal of material to cover today", Jonathan said as Eleanor poured him some coffee. For the next six hours, both the Evans and Dynacorp personnel reviewed the Merger documents, making changes and adding new conditions as they went. "Well Susan, what do you think? Are we ready to move forward?" Susan Brooks smiled saying, "Yes, I'm comfortable with what I've seen. So now it's up to our Board of Directors to agree to the changes. If everything goes well, our lawyers should have the Merger documents finalized within the next few weeks, which means we can release the news to the press at that time."
Ben watched as Jonathan leaned over and whispered to Meg, then turned his attention back to the group. "Well, thank you everyone for all of your hard work, please follow Eleanor into the private dinning hall, there's a wonderful buffet prepared. If you'll excuse us, Ms. Brooks and I are going to dinner at The Mark. There are a few last minute issues that we need to discuss."
Ben stood in the doorway of the adjacent room watching Meg as she picked up the last few reports from the conference table. No matter how he tried over the past few weeks, he couldn't get her out of his mind. She had touched his heart in a way no one had before and he wanted her. Just as he was about to approach, he heard someone say, "That was quite an impressive presentation Ms. Cummings". Before anyone saw him, Ben stepped back behind the door as she turned toward the person making the comment. It came from one of Dynacorp's lead Attorney's, Mark Winters. "Thank you Mr. Winters" "Mark, please." "If you're looking for Ms. Brooks, she has already left with Mr. Evans." "Actually I was looking for you. I was wondering if you were going to join us for dinner." Meg smiled but declined explaining that she still had some work to complete before calling it a night. "Well maybe another time?" "I'd like that Mr., uh Mark". "Great, I'll call you sometime, good night", he said as he left the room. Ben decided that it would be best if he left without letting Meg know that he had been listening to her conversation.
An hour later Jason knocked on the office door as he opened it. "Hey Meg, we missed you at dinner so I brought you a plate." "You must be reading my mind, I'm starved. But why did you leave the party, it looked as though you getting along so well with Janice Hastings at the meeting. She's head of Dynacorp's Systems Division, isn't she?" Jason laughed, "You are such a match maker. Yes, she's very interesting but there's a minor emergency which I need to take care of." She could see the frown on Jason's face as he sat across the desk and laid out the food. "What's wrong?" "There's a small crisis overseas. It seems as though there's been an electrical fire in the Computer Data Center in London. I'm booked on the next flight to see for myself how extensive the damage is. It doesn't sound good so I'll be putting in some long hours over the next few weeks. Luckily the company that controls our backup systems says we should back online before I arrive. I hate leaving right now but I should be back in time for the official Merger announcement."
"Well, if there is anything I can do, just let me know, she said. "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. By the way, Eleanor mentioned that she overheard Mark Winters ask you to dinner." Meg shook her head chuckling, "Does everyone know my business?" "Hey, I'm only teasing. Mark's a great guy. He's smart, successful and single. And it's time you get involved with someone." "Oh thanks Dad." They both laughed. "Meg, don't take this the wrong way but I really don't like seeing you alone. You need to learn to trust someone again. I know you're frighten but everyone is not like Philip." "Jason I know you're saying this because you care but I'm not ready. Just give me a little more time. Now, let's grab a cab. I'm beat."
Two weeks had past since Jason left for London. Meg had been so consumed with finalizing the changes for the Merger with Jonathan and the Corporate Attorneys that she hardly realized how much time had past. It was almost 8pm and Meg was placing the last few folders into her briefcase when the phone rang. "Meg, I'm glad you're still there. Could you please stop by my office before you leave?" She agreed, picked up her coat and headed down the private hallway. "Meg, thanks for staying. Please have a seat this won't take long. I need to ask you a very big favor and before you answer I want you to know that you don't have to agree." She listened as Jonathan explained that someone leaked the possibility of a Merger to Jim Carson, a financial reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle, and how determined he was to get a story.
"Jonathan, I'm so sorry to hear that, what can I do?" He smiled saying, "I knew I could count on you. I've taken a suite at the Fairmont until the Merger is complete. It's the only way that Susan and I can see each other until the Merger is official." He continued describing his plan, which would involve Meg hand delivering documents from the lawyers. It also meant that she would need to spend a great deal of time with Ben over the next two weeks since he was handling the International aspects of the Merger. Jonathan also made it clear that no one, not even Ben, could know about his arrangement with Susan. He explained that she would be given complete access to the suite at any time day or night. Meg agreed and left.

This Chapter picks up the morning after Jonathan tells Meg about the possible media leak of the Merger.
Chapter 5 - The Ruse
During the next two weeks Meg was as good as her word, delivering papers to Jonathan when necessary and dodging calls from various Financial reporters regarding the rumors of a possible merger. She was also spending practically every evening in late meetings with Ben, not that she minded.
At first she was a bit apprehensive but he had such a way of putting her at ease. There was so much more to him than the great looks and the British charm. He was intelligent, competent and above all ambitious. The only concern was that she was becoming more attracted to him the more time they spent together. She even tried to find an excuse for not attending the dinner at his home but he insisted. He was leaving for London in two days and wanted to thank her for all her hard work. Besides, he had promised an authentic gourmet meal and she was curious to see yet another side of him. Somehow, it didn't quite fit the playboy image though. As she stepped into a low cut black cotton dress with spaghetti straps, she couldn't help feeling the sense of excitement of a first date. But she also knew that she couldn't allow herself to get involved with someone like Ben. There was something about him that frightened her. Not the way Philip did, it was rather the sense that he would touch her heart like no one before.
When she arrived at the large Stonehouse Mansion on Nob Hill, Meg realized this was the first time in all these months that she had ever been to the Evan's estate. It was one of the few surviving sandstone mansions in the city and the view of the bay was, to say the least, spectacular. Before she reached the entrance, the large double doors opened and a butler appeared. "Welcome Ms. Cummings, my name is Harrison. Mr. Evans is waiting for you in the living room. Please come with me." She followed him through the marble foyer, which was exquisitely lined with antiques, contemporary art and freshly cut scented flowers.
Harrison led her into the room where Ben was speaking with an attractive woman with light blonde hair. She appeared to be in her early fifties and was dressed in a dark blue two piece suit. Harrison interrupted saying, "Excuse me Mr. Evans, Ms. Cummings is here." He walked toward Meg and placed a kiss on her lips. "You look beautiful. I'd like to introduce you to Mrs. Landsbury, who runs our home and you've already met Harrison. They've been with my family for over twenty years." They exchanged greetings and left the room as Ben poured a couple of glasses of champagne and handed one to Meg. "Well, here's to a special night. First of many for us, I hope." After clanging their glasses, Ben reached for her hand and led her to the sofa. He looked so handsome wearing a dark pair of slacks and a white silk shirt, she thought. "Oh, I almost forgot I wanted to ask Mrs. Landsbury something, I'll be back in a minute. Just relax and enjoy the fire."
She sat down on the sofa nearest the dark green marble fireplace and quickly became mesmerized by the fire. The doors to the patio were open, allowing the breeze from the ocean to be felt in the room and the fire's warmth calmed her anxiety. She looked around thinking what a comfortable room, filled with overstuffed chairs and sofas, accented by European antiques and Impressionist paintings.
As she walked toward the fireplace to examine the family photos on the mantel, she had the sensation that she wasn't alone. She turned toward the patio's French doors and there he was, the most beautiful Doberman that she had ever seen, he was completely black with the exception of the two diamond-shaped brown patches on his chest and deep brown eyes. He was just sitting there silently staring at her. Meg stooped down, urging him to come near. He quickly responded to her command and buried his head in her lap, allowing her to playfully massage his ears. "Well, aren't you friendly." "I see Zeus has already introduced himself", Ben said smiling as he entered the room. "He sure did. Ben, he's beautiful. Is he yours?" "Actually, he's Jonathan's but I've never seen him take to anyone else quite like this. So I guess your allure extends to animals as well." Meg laughed and stood. "I don't know about that. I was just admiring your family photos when he appeared. I think he was just making sure I didn't disturb anything." "Well, he seems to think that this is his house and just likes to make sure he meets everyone. He's really very friendly, but then you know that now."
She smiled and walked backed to the fireplace mantel and picked up the photo of him and Cassie. "Where was this taken?" "It was a celebration for my promotion as President of the International Division", he said as he walked up behind her. "She's very beautiful Ben." "Yes, she is. So are you." Meg blushed as she placed the picture back on the mantel. "You must miss her very much." "Cassie and I are just friends who happen to enjoy each other's company from time to time." "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry." Ben smiled and reached for her hand. "You didn't, so let's change the subject. I hope you're hungry, the dinner is almost ready."
"I have to admit that I was intrigued by your invitation." "We're having artichokes vinaigrette, steak au poivre and for dessert, chocolate soufflé." "I'm impressed. I never expected that you were such a talent in the kitchen." "Actually I'm not. At the risk of shattering your image of me, Sonya, our chef, does all the cooking. Shall we go in?", he said as he offered his arm.
During the meal Ben attempted to shift the focus to Meg and her past but she successfully avoided specific answers. Instead she insisted on turning the conversation back to him and Cassie. "Okay, it's obvious that you don't like talking about yourself", he laughed. "I'm sorry, it's really not all that interesting." Afraid of ruining the evening if he persisted, Ben decided to change the subject. "Well, why don't we go into the living room and relax?"
Ben sat close to Meg on the sofa as they sipped their Brandy. "Meg, I want to thank you for everything you've done for this Merger. Jonathan thinks the world of you in more ways than one." "I'm not sure what you mean?", she responded. He shifted moving closer to her. "Well it's just that I think Jonathan may be interested in you on a more personal level. Not that I can blame him." Meg blushed as she struggled to respond. "Ben, I'm sure you're mistaken. Jonathan is wonderful but I'm sure he doesn't feel anything for me other than gratitude for my assistance."
Ben placed the back of his hand on her face and stroked her cheek saying, "I would think most men fall in love with you". Meg pulled away, stood and walked to the fireplace. Ben quickly moved behind her. "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable, I didn't mean to its just that I really do want to get to know you better". She turned to face him. "Ben, why do you say things like that? Do you really just enjoy playing games?" His look turned serious. "No, not at all. I've waited for this moment since the first time we met."
He cupped her face in his hands, leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. Meg could feel the arousal building inside as his kiss turned more passionate and then suddenly pulled away. "Ben, I can't, you and Cassie are...". Before she could finish, he pulled her close to his chest saying, "Meg, this isn't about Cassie. I think there is something between us and I think you feel it too". He kissed her again, this time with more passion than the last. Again she pushed him away. "Ben, I can't do this. I should leave." "I'm sorry Meg, I didn't mean to pressure you." She picked up her purse saying, "Its me, I'm just not interested in getting involved with anyone right now". He could sense that her protests didn't match the kiss but it wasn't the time to pressure her. "Meg, I like you very much and I would love to see you again when I return from London. Even if it's just as friends", he said as he walked her through the foyer and into the courtyard where the limousine was waiting. "I think I'd like that. Thank you for a lovely dinner. Good Night!"
Two weeks had past since Ben had been gone and she couldn't help admit that she missed him and wondered if things had changed since he left. From what she had read in the Society pages, Cassie had joined him in London and as far as she knew, they were together. And why wouldn't they be, after all there was nothing between her and Ben, she tried to convince herself.
It was almost eight as she placed the last folders in her briefcase when the phone rang. "Meg Cummings, may I help you?" "Ms. Cummings this is Frances, the concierge at the Fairmont. "Yes I remember, what can I do for you Francis?" "Well, I tried reaching Mr. Evans in his suite but he's not answering. There's a reporter in the lounge and he has been asking a lot of questions about the woman who's spending a lot of time in his suite. No one has told him anything but he isn't going away and I didn't know what else to do." "You did the right thing Francis, I'll be right there, please keep him occupied until I arrive. When I get there, I would like you to do something for me." Meg explained her plan and then hung up the phone.
Within a half-hour, she entered the lobby of the Fairmont and approached the private elevator. She stepped inside, turned and winked at Francis as the doors closed, silently signaling that she was ready for the next step of the plan. He picked up the phone and called the Bartender in the Crown Room. "Hank, its Francis. Send a message to that reporter that Mr. Evans friend is on her way to the Penthouse Suite.
As she stepped off the elevator, a butler led her to the main living area, informing her that Mr. Evans would be with her in few minutes. Suddenly, Jonathan appeared wearing a dark green robe. "I'm so sorry to interrupt but Francis called me earlier saying that Jim Carson was told that the woman you were spending time with was with you here tonight. He's not going away so I thought we should do something. We don't have much time because he's on his way up. I would like to suggest that we give him a story that will make him go away." Meg explained her plan to Jonathan and then disappeared into the back bedroom just as the elevator doors opened and Jim Carson emerged. The Butler tried to intercept him as he approached the living area. "Excuse me Sir, this is a private suite. If you don't leave I'll be forced to call security." Ignoring him, Jim pushed his way into the main room as Jonathan came from down the hall. "What's this all about?"
"Mr. Evans, I'm Jim Carson from the Chronicle and there's a rumor that Dynacorp and Evans Communications are in bed together in more ways than one." "I beg your pardon!", Jonathan shouted. Meg turned to Susan saying, "That's my cue. Wish me luck." Before Jim could respond, he heard Meg's voice. "Jonathan, are you coming back to, uh, oh I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone else was here." They turned and saw Meg standing in the hallway also wearing a dark green silk robe and gripping the lapels in embarrassment. It was obvious to Jim that she had just come from the bedroom. "Meg, please go back to the room. I'll take care of this." Without saying a word, she turned and walked back down the hall. Jonathan turned to Jim saying, "If you don't leave I'll call Security and have you thrown out". "I'm sorry I was just doing my job. Besides I got what I came for. It may not be the story I expected but it will still sell papers", he said as the Butler escorted him to the elevator. "What a piece of work. Make sure he never gets access to this suite again", Jonathan instructed the butler. "Yes Sir!"
When Jim disappeared into the elevator, Meg reemerged from the back room fully dressed, along with Susan. "Is it over?", Susan asked. "No, it's just the beginning I'm afraid. Meg I can't thank you enough for doing this tonight." Susan hugged Meg saying, "Yes, thank you for everything that you've done. I'm afraid we've put you in an awkward situation". "Not at all. I wanted to help and I'm glad you trusted me enough to let me. It's late and I should get home." Jonathan and Susan walked Meg to the elevator and instructed the Butler to make sure the hotel limousine took Meg home.
The next morning as Meg walked down the hall toward her office, she had the strangest feeling that she was the center of unwanted attention. As she approached her office, she paused at Lisa's desk. "Morning Lisa, when you get a chance, would you bring me some coffee?" Lisa nodded as Meg closed the door behind her.
A few moments later, she appeared with the coffee and placed it on her desk, along with the day's copy of the SF Chronicle. "Meg, have you seen the Financial section?" "No, why?" Before she could answer, the phone rang. "Meg, are you okay? I'm so sorry about that newspaper article." "Hi Jonathan, I haven't seen the paper as yet. Is something wrong?" "Please come over to the suite right away, we can talk about it then."
She hung up and immediately left for the Penthouse. As she stepped from the elevator, the Butler led her into the living room where Jonathan was waiting. "Thank you Benson that will be all. Morning Meg. Help yourself to some coffee?" As she poured a cup and sat next to him on the sofa, Jonathan handed her the financial section of the SF Chronicle. She couldn't believe her eyes. In large bold print was the heading "No Merger But Maybe A Marriage for Evans Communications CEO." The article went on to explain that for months, there had been rumors about a possible merger for Evans Communications and an unnamed competitor. But after months of investigation, it has been learned that the CEO Jonathan Evans has been secretly keeping company with his attractive personal assistant, Meg Cummings, in a very private suit at the Fairmont. "Oh god, I can't believe that he would write something like this." "Meg, I'm afraid it gets worse. Are you sure you want to read the rest?" "Yes, I do", Meg said as her eyes returned to the article." Even though extreme attempts have been made to make their late night meetings appear to be nothing more than work related, this reporter saw first hand that business was the last thing on their minds. Instead of interrupting a meeting, I found them clad in matching silk robes. A rather embarrassed Meg Cummings retreated to the bedroom when this reporter questioned their relationship. Meg dropped the paper and gasped.
"Oh my God! Jonathan I'm so sorry about this. I was only trying to throw him off track but I never thought he would print anything like this. Please forgive me, I'm afraid that I've only made things worse." Jonathan reached over and softly patted her hand. Meg, this is not your fault. If it weren't for you, this Merger with Dynacorp would have been exposed, not to mention my relationship with Susan. We are in your debt. I'm just sorry that it's going to cause you embarrassment. If you want I will call the editor of the Chronicle and demand a retraction."
"Jonathan, you can't do that, besides it's almost over. I'll be fine but what do we do now?", she asked. Jonathan stood and poured another cup of coffee. "At this point there is nothing else that we can do, unfortunately we still need to keep this Merger quiet for at least another month. I hate to say this but it may get worse before it gets better. There will most likely be more inquiries made by other reporters, especially now from the Society section. Then there is Ben and Jason of course."
"How would you like me to handle them?", she asked. Jonathan sat back down next to Meg. "Well for the time being we need to keep up the pretense that we are a couple. So I think it would be a good idea if you attend some upcoming social events with me. We also need to keep this from Ben and Jason for a while longer. And I'm afraid Ben won't take the news very well. It's a good thing he's in Europe for the time being. So do you think you can keep it from them?" Meg took a deep breath before responding. "I hate lying to Jason but I know how important this is and I'm sure he will understand when he learns the truth. Well, I should get back to work, if there isn't anything else?"
Jonathan stood and helped Meg with her coat saying, "No that's all for now, but if you run into any problems with the Press or anyone in the office call me right away. I'll phone you later regarding those changes that the lawyers are recommending." As the elevator doors opened, he leaned down and placed a kiss on Meg's check. "Thanks for coming. Now don't work to hard", he said as the doors closed.
When she returned to her office, it was obvious from the messages on her voice mail that most people were aware of the article. The only call she really cared about returning was Jason's. She picked up the phone and asked Lisa to get Jason on the line. As she sat behind her desk, the phone rang. "Jason, hi. How are things going?" She paused as she listened to him making small talk. "Jason, why are you really calling? He explained that his secretary telephoned him regarding the article and that he was concerned about her.
"That's sweet but I'm fine and I'd really rather not discuss it over the phone. Why don't we wait until you return and we can talk about it then. By the way when are you coming home?" Jason explained that he and Ben were taking the first flight out on Friday morning and would call her when he got home. Before hanging up he made a point to tell Meg that Ben was quite upset with the news but that he would try to talk to him about it during the flight back.
"Oh great that's just what I need. He's probably worried that I'm going to be his Stepmother. Now that's an image", she laughed as she buzzed Lisa. "Lisa, would you please direct all calls from the media regarding that article to Public Relations. Just tell them that I will not be making any public statement. Thanks." It was almost seven by the time she finished her meetings with the lawyers and left for home.
As soon as she walked into her living room the phone rang. "Hello?" "Meg, its Jonathan. I tried to catch you before you left the office and I'm sorry to bother you at home but this is important." "That's no problem, I just got in." Jonathan explained that he had forgotten that he was hosting a Fund Raising dinner at his home on Friday evening and thought it would be a good idea if she attended as his date. Meg agreed and said good night. "God what a day! I need a nice long hot bath and a good night sleep", she thought as she headed into the bedroom.
The week had past so quickly and it was nearly four in the afternoon, by the time Meg left her office. "Lisa I'm leaving now, so if you need to reach me I will be home until about seven. Otherwise, I'll see you Monday. Have a great weekend."
Meg placed the last diamond stud in her ear and then smoothed the dark blue oriental silk gown over her form as she stood in front of the full-length mirror. "I can't believe Jonathan sent this dress over for tonight's party. It would take a month's salary to be able to afford this gown." It was a floral design gown with a low cut bodice and a tapered waist, accentuating her slim form. "Hey Meg are you here?" "I'm in the bedroom Tracy." When she appeared in the doorway, she gasped. "Meg, you look beautiful. That's an original Versache. "It sure is, Jonathan sent it over for the party." "Meg, don't take this the wrong way but isn't he a little old for you?" "Tracy, I know you're concerned but don't be." Suddenly, she heard the intercom buzzer. "Ms. Cummings, this is Dennis, Mr. Evans chauffeur." "Oh, I'll be with you in a few minutes. Come on Tracy walk me out."
When Meg arrived at the Mansion, Harrison led her into the main living area where Jonathan was speaking to Mrs. Landsbury. "Excuse me Mr. Evans, Ms. Cummings is here." He walked toward Meg and placed a kiss on her lips. "You look beautiful. I asked you to come early because I wanted to discuss how we're all going to handle the people at tonight's party. I've already spoken to Mrs. Landsbury and Harrison regarding our relationship. They are the only two in the house that know the truth. Not even Ben knows and I want to keep it that way for awhile longer." When he finished issuing his final instructions, Mrs. Landsbury and Harrison returned to their duties. "Now, let's have some champagne before the guests arrive", he said as he motioned to one of the servants.
"Jonathan, I want to thank you so much for this lovely gown. It's the most beautiful dress that I've ever seen." "Well, it's the least that I could do after everything that you've done for Susan and me. By the way she will be here this evening and she's looking forward to seeing you again. You might as well know that Susan was the one that picked out the dress." "Excuse me Mr. Evans, here is that item you asked for", Harrison said as he handed him a dark blue velvet box. "Thank you Harrison." Jonathan opened the case revealing a stunning diamond and sapphire necklace. "Meg, I thought this would be perfect with your gown", he said as he moved behind her, placed the necklace around her throat and locked the clasp. "Now, let's see if I was right." She turned to face him. "Well, it appears that I was. Although I'm afraid you put those jewels to shame", he said smiling as he handed Harrison the box. "Before the other guests arrive I want to thank you again for doing this. Now take a look for yourself and tell me if you like the necklace." Meg turned toward a nearby mirror. "Jonathan, this is so beautiful but I can't accept this." "Meg, if you don't, Susan and I will be very offended." Meg smiled and thanked him again.
During the next few hours Jonathan introduced Meg to his friends and associates while Phyllis Stevens, the society reporter from the Chronicle, watched their every move. She was considered San Francisco's premier gossip columnists, known to make or break a reputation with the stroke of her computer's keyboard. Jonathan wanted her at the party for the purpose of validating his relationship with Meg. He knew if she wrote an article about them, everyone would be convinced.
As he introduced Meg to Dan and Emily Thorson, Mrs. Landsbury approached requesting to speak to Meg. "Excuse me Ms. Cummings, there is a call for you in the Library. They said it was urgent." Meg touched Jonathan's arm saying, "Please excuse me, I won't be long." As soon as Meg left, Emily leaned toward Jonathan's ear saying, "She is absolutely charming". Jonathan smiled and nodded in agreement.
When he started to turn back to the conversation with Dan and Emily, he noticed Phyllis heading in Meg's direction and knew it was time to intervene. He excused himself and quickly moved to her side saying, "Ms. Stevens, it's good to see you again. I hope you're enjoying the party." She reluctantly turned her attention away from Meg. "Yes I am Mr. Evans, it's a wonderful affair. Thank you for the invitation. And might I add that Ms. Cummings is quite beautiful. I was just about to see if I could get a few comments from her for my column." Jonathan smiled, took her arm and led her back toward the party saying, "I'm sorry Meg's busy right now but she'll be back shortly. I was just speaking to Dan and Emily Thorson, would you like an introduction?" He knew she wouldn't be able to resist such an offer, especially since they were on everyone's party A list and never gave interviews. "Excuse me Dan, Emily. I'd like to introduce Phyllis Stevens, the Society editor from the Chronicle."
Meanwhile down the hall, Mrs. Landsbury opened the door to the Library and pointed to the phone on the far desk saying, "Just press line one. I'll make sure you're not disturbed". She closed the door and left. Meg picked up the receiver. "Hello, this is Meg Cummings." She waited a few seconds for a response but there was only silence. "Hello?" Realizing no one was on the line, she hung up the phone. Just as she turned to leave she heard a familiar voice coming from behind her. "Sorry for the ruse, but I wanted to speak to you alone", he said as he slowly turned around in the large leather chair behind the desk. "Ben! You startled me." "I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention." "Jason said you were coming back but I didn't expect that you would be here tonight. It's good to see you. How was London?" He stood, pushed away the chair and adjusted his tuxedo jacket as he walked toward her. "London was fine but it seems as though I've missed quite a bit around here. After hearing about you and my Dad, I thought I should get home in time for the party to see for myself if the rumors were true. I must say I'm quite surprised." Meg nervously took a few steps backward. "About what?"
"Please don't be coy. You know exactly what I'm referring to. When I left, you said that you weren't interested in getting involved with anyone but it seems that you were ready to move on after all. I guess you just didn't want to move on with me. According to Mrs. Landsbury, you started seeing my father as soon as I left for London." Meg saw the look in Ben's eyes. They were so dark and cold that it frightened her.
"Well, you look beautiful", he said as he reached up and softly stroked her bare arm with the back of his hand. "My guess is the dress and jewels are a gift from Jonathan. Am I right?" She looked away without responding. "You don't have to answer, I recognize my father's exquisite taste. He definitely knows how to sweep a woman off her feet." Meg could feel the tears welling up in her eyes as he continued the harsh words. Ben reached for her arm and turned her back to face him. "So tell me was it the money? Or were you just playing sexual games? Isn't that what you accused me of doing once to you?" Meg struggled to speak. "How can you be so cruel? I never led you to believe that I was interested in a relationship with you." "No, that's true but you didn't waste anytime getting involved with Jonathan as soon as I left."
Ben placed both his hands on her face and moved within inches of her mouth whispering, "When I kissed you the night you were here for dinner, you kissed me back with such passion but you insisted you weren't ready for any involvement. I guess my dad changed your mind." He leaned in and kissed her hard on the lips before continuing. "Tell me that article isn't true and that you and my father are not involved". Meg pulled away saying, "I have nothing else to say. If you want answers, you'll have to ask Jonathan." As she turned toward the door, Ben grabbed her arm forcing her to face him. "I want you to look into my eyes and tell me the truth." Meg just stood there in silence with tears running down her face as she struggled against his grip. "Well, I guess I just had you figured all wrong. You're just like all...."
Suddenly, the library door opened and Jonathan entered. "Let go of her!" Ben immediately released Meg's arm and stepped away. "Dad, you can't be serious about this, Meg is young enough to be my sister. And why on earth did I have to learn from my secretary that you two were involved?" He didn't bother to respond, instead he turned to Meg, retrieved a handkerchief from his jacket's inside pocket and wiped away her tears saying, "I'm so sorry for this. Are you okay?" "I'm fine." He reached for her hand and led her to the door. "If you'll excuse us, I need to speak to Ben. Privately."
After Meg left the room, Jonathan slowly turned to face Ben, paused and took a deep breath trying to control the rage he was feeling. "I'm only going to say this once and only once. If you ever speak to Meg like that again or put a hand on her, I will not only fire you so fast that your head will spin but I will cut you out of my life completely. Do you understand me?" Ben had never heard Jonathan talk to him like that before and he couldn't help but think that his father was really in love with Meg. It was the only explanation for his anger. Even though he had wanted to pursue a relationship with her himself, now was not the time to argue the point. Jonathan continued his questions. "Have I made myself perfectly clear?" Ben stuttered as he answered. "Uh, I'm sorry I should never have spoken to her like that. She didn't deserve it. It's just that I wish you had told me before I had to hear it from someone else." "That was my decision, not Meg's. I've said enough, we need to return to the party. As for Meg, remember what I said. And by the way, I expect you to apologize to her immediately. You will be working closely with her during the next few weeks and I want to make sure you do everything you can to put her at ease." Ben nodded silently and left the library. No matter how old he got, he would always be Jonathan's son and he knew that tone. It meant that there was no use in discussing the subject any further. His father was a man of few words. He also never made a threat that he wasn't prepared to carry out.
When he rejoined the party, he saw Meg chatting with Jason. "Excuse me, Meg, may I speak to you for a minute?" "Actually, Jason I were in the middle of something." Jason squeezed her arm with his hand saying, "That's okay, we can continue this later. Why don't you two talk and I'll get us some champagne". Ben patted him on the shoulder. "Thank you Jason." "Ben, I didn't want to say anything in front Jason but I don't have anything to say to you." "Meg, please come with me to the terrace. This won't take long." Reluctantly, she agreed and headed through the open French Doors. When she turned to face him, Ben was leaning against the terrace wall. "I want to apologize." "I assume Jonathan asked you to say that." "Yes, but I wanted to say that I was sorry for hurting you. You didn't deserve it." "Let's forget it ever happened. I should get back", she said before returning to the party.
During the remainder of the evening Ben watched as Jonathan escorted Meg around the party silently telling everyone how important she was to him. "God, she's so beautiful. I can't blame my father for falling in love with her. I guess I'm just jealous, but something tells me there is more going on here."
For the next couple of weeks, Ben worked along side Meg keeping his distance as Jonathan had instructed. No matter how he tried, he couldn't get her out of his mind and he couldn't deny that his feelings for her were growing more deeply with each passing day. It wasn't difficult to understand how his father had fallen under her charming spell.
He was working late when he got the call. "Mr. Evans, your father phoned and asked if you would messenger your latest reports to Ms. Cummings home before you leave this evening. He would like her to review them before the meeting on Monday." "Please tell him I will make sure it gets to her this evening, then telephone Ms. Cummings and tell her to expect a delivery." Linda called Meg at her home and told her that a messenger would be there within the hour.
