Soul Mates
This Chapter picks up weeks after Ben learns that Meg is involved with Jonathan and tries to rebuild a relationship with her.
Chapter 6 - The Unexpected Dinner Guest
It was almost 8pm when Meg heard the buzzer. Pulling the robe over her shoulders she pressed the intercom button. "Please leave the package in the elevator, thank you!" When she heard the doors open, she turned and saw Ben walking into her foyer. She quickly closed the robe, tying the silk belt around her waist. "Ben! What are you doing here?" "I didn't mean to startle you but we missed the shut off time for the Messenger Service so I thought I would drop it off myself. I hope you don't mind?"
"No, not at all. I'm sorry for my appearance, I just wasn't expecting to see anyone." "Please don't apologize, I know Jonathan wanted you to get these reports tonight so I thought I would drop them off on my way home." He paused for a moment moving his eyes up and down her form before walking toward her and placing the envelope in her hand.
"I should go and again I'm sorry for intruding." He turned back toward the elevator. "Ben, wait! Please. I was just about to have dinner. In fact I was expecting a neighbor but her plans changed at the last minute. If you haven't eaten yet, there's plenty. It's not the gourmet meal that I enjoyed at your home but you're welcome to stay." Ben smiled and walked into the living area. "Thank you, I'm sure it will be wonderful. I'd love to join you." "Great! Just give me a few minutes to change. Please make yourself comfortable and help yourself to a drink. The bar is over by the fireplace. I won't be long", she said just before disappearing into her bedroom.
As Ben looked around the unit, he couldn't help but think how much it described her personality, sensuous, eclectic and most of all filled with warmth. What a contrast to the other women he had known. Moments later Meg emerged from the bedroom, wearing a low cut soft dark blue midriff sweater, exposing her soft generous cleavage, and a pair of blue jeans. "It's such a beautiful evening, would you mind having dinner in the garden?" Ben couldn't resist the charming invitation. "That would be great, can I help?" Meg came from the kitchen and handed him the dinnerware and matches. "You can set the table and open the wine while I check on the dinner."
Ben removed his jacket, loosened his tie and then lit the candles. When the table was set, he walked to the edge of the garden. The sky was lit up with stars as if for this special evening. As he admired the view, Meg walked up behind him saying, "It will only be a few more minutes, so I thought we could have some wine while we're waiting." Ben poured the wine and handed her a glass. "I know I've said this before but I am very sorry for my behavior when I first got back from London. I wish there was some excuse but to tell the truth I guess I was jealous." "Jealous?" "Yes, before I left I thought we were, uh, getting close and then I heard about you and my Dad." Meg placed her glass on the table. "Maybe this was a bad idea." "Meg please wait, I wasn't trying to make you uncomfortable. I'd really like to stay." "I'm sorry it's a sensitive subject and I promised Jonathan not to discuss it with anyone. I would like you to stay. Why don't you make yourself comfortable, I'll be back in a few minutes with our dinner."
As Ben relaxed and watched Meg through the French patio doors, putting the final touches on the meal, he couldn't help think that his father was lucky to have a woman like her. She was everything he wanted and more. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath of the clean night air and leaned back on the patio chair. He couldn't decide what was more enticing, the lingering smell of her perfume or the night blooming jasmine. Even with his eyes closed he could see her beautiful smile and those moist red lips. All of a sudden he felt her hands rest on his shoulders as she brushed her warm wet lips up and down the side of his neck. Without saying a word, she walked around to face him and slowly moved between his legs, then leaned down and kissed him. He couldn't believe what was happening, her taste was so clean and fresh as she traced his mouth with her tongue while her hands slowly unbuttoned his shirt. As the kiss deepened, her hand moved from massaging his chest to the growing bulge between his legs.
"Ben? Are you okay?" Her voice stirred him out of his fantasy. "Uh, I'm fine. I was just relaxing in the night air." Meg placed the dinner on the table and took her seat. "I hope you like Salmon." "Ben smiled, took in the aroma of the meal saying, "I love Salmon. It looks and smells wonderful".
After dinner, Meg blew out the candles and started clearing the table. "Well, thank you for a wonderful dinner. I probably should go. I'm sure you're tired." "You don't have to leave, it's just getting a bit chilly. If you wouldn't mind you can start a fire while I take care of the dishes?" "I'd love too", he said heading into the living room. As Meg worked in the kitchen, Ben stared into the flames. He couldn't help but think that he should leave before he completely forgot that she was involved with Jonathan. When she entered the living area she said, "Oh Ben, that fire is just what I needed to take the chill out of the air. Thank you. I was going to have a Brandy, would you like one?" "Sounds like the perfect compliment to a wonderful meal. I'm so glad that Jonathan wanted you to get those reports tonight and your friend's plans changed. Otherwise, I would have missed a great evening", he said as she handed him the drink and moved to the couch. Meg smiled and sat next to him. "Well I'm glad you were able to join me. It gave us a chance to talk about something other than work." "At the risk of having you throw me out, there's something I need to know." Meg took a sip of Brandy before answering. "Okay." Ben moved closer and placed an arm behind her on the sofa. "Is it just my imagination or was there something between us before I left for London?" Meg swirled the brandy in her glass as she thought about his question. "I'm not sure what you want me to say."
He moved his hand from the sofa to her hair, brushing a few loose strands from her eyes. "The night before I left, you said you weren't ready to get involved." Meg interrupted saying, "That's how I felt." "Really? Then can you explain how it is that you and my father got involved as soon as I left?" Meg stood up and walked toward the fireplace without saying a word. "I'm not trying to upset you. I just want to understand what happened." Without facing him, she continued staring into the fire. "Jonathan is a wonderful man. He's intelligent, warm, sensitive and extremely charming. I would be crazy not to be in love with him." Ben walked up behind her and placed his drink on the mantel. "But are you, in love with him?" "Maybe you should discuss this with Jonathan." Ben slowly turned her toward him and placed his hands on her face. "I need to hear you tell me how you really feel." Meg started to pull away but he just tightened his hold.
"Tell me you don't want me to kiss you." "Ben, uh, I don't think this is a good idea." "Actually, it's the best idea I've had since I heard the news." He leaned down and softly kissed each cheek before placing a kiss on her lips. Within seconds the kiss grew more passionate. Meg felt as though her heart was going to burst out of her chest as the kiss deepened and she felt his forearms rubbing softly against her breasts. Suddenly, she pulled away before getting completely lost in her aroused state.
"Ben, I can't do this." He pulled her hard against his chest saying, "Don't tell me that kiss didn't mean anything". "I'm sorry I shouldn't have kissed you. I'm giving you mixed signals and that's not what I wanted to do. It would be best if you left." "Meg, I'm sorry. I don't mean to pressure you but I know there is something going on with you and my dad and it's not an affair. I know that now. You would never kiss me the way you just did, if you were in love with him."
Meg pulled away again saying, "I'm tired, would you please leave." Ben picked up his jacket, walked to the elevator and turned back to see Meg staring back into the fire. "I'll leave but this isn't over, not by a long shot. I'm more convinced than ever that whatever is going on between you and Jonathan, it has nothing to do with being in love. Good night Meg." As the elevator doors closed, Ben leaned his head against the wood paneling and released a deep sigh. "God, no one has ever made me feel the way she does and I'm going to get to the bottom of this and soon. I can't lose her, especially now that I know she has feelings for me too."
An hour later Ben entered his bedroom, stripped off his jacket and walked to the portable bar. As he poured a drink, he couldn't stop thinking about Meg and the kiss. He shook his head as if trying to get the image out of his mind, with little success. "I need to get some sleep", he thought as discarded his clothes, walked into the bathroom and stepped into the shower. The hot water beating down on his aching muscles felt so good. Leaning his hands against the warm tiles, he hung his head releasing a deep sigh and closed his eyes. "God I want her." All of a sudden, he felt her hands slide around his waist and move toward his chest as her breasts pressed against his back. "I'm so glad to hear that. I was hoping that you missed me." Ben knew he had to be dreaming that Meg was there with him. Her hands moved slowly down over his stomach and to the side of his muscular thighs, caressing them as she kissed his back. "God, these fantasies have to stop before I lose my mind", he thought.
Suddenly, he heard a voice saying, "Ben, I missed you so much these past few weeks. The photo shoot ended early so I took the first plane home. I'm glad to hear, and see that you missed me too." Ben abruptly moved her hands away and turned around. "Cassie, I wasn't expecting you and I'm really very tired." How did you get past Harrison?", he said stepping out of the shower and wrapping a towel around his waist.
She moved behind him and placed her hands on his shoulders, softly massaging. "I told him that you were expecting me and that you didn't want to be disturbed." She slid her hands down his back and stripped away the towel, whispering, "Why don't you lie down on the bed and I'll give you one of my world famous massages. It will make you feel so much better". "Cassie, I'm not in the mood for any company." "Oh really? Well, then I guess it wasn't me you were you talking about in the shower? So tell me, have I been replaced by Jonathan's mistress?" Ben walked over to the Armoire and withdrew a pair of dark blue silk pajama pants, thinking he better change the subject before Cassie figured out what he was up to with Meg. He couldn't let her interfere. "Ben, I don't blame you for wanting company while I was away but I've missed you and I need to be with you tonight." She grabbed the pajamas from his hand and dropped them on a nearby chair, "Come with me, I'll make you feel so good", she said pulling him toward the bed.
After lying on his stomach, she straddled his hips and poured lotion onto her hands. Slowly she began moving them up and down his arms while softly brushing her breasts against his back with each stroke. "Just relax and let me take care of all your needs." Ben couldn't stop the images that it was Meg stirring the passion he was feeling while she slowly rocked her lower body as her fingers massaged his tired muscles.
Suddenly, he turned over onto his back and pulled her toward his mouth kissing her passionately. He moved her underneath him and began a rocking motion matching the pace of her moans until their explosions washed over them. Seconds later Ben collapsed on the bed, breathing hard and running his hands through his thick black hair, feeling emptier than ever before.
Cassie moved onto his chest, saying, "Ben, I'm so glad you weren't that tired. I love the way you make me feel". As he stroked her hair, he couldn't believe that he had just made love to her with the images of Meg in his mind. Each time he closed his eyes, it was her face he saw and now sleep couldn't come soon enough. Until he could change the situation, he could still be with her in his dreams.
The next morning Cassie was complaining to Martha, one of the kitchen servants, about there not being any fresh blueberries when Ben entered the Solarium. "Hey sleepy head want some breakfast?" "No thanks there are some things that I need to take care of so I'll call you later", he said as he put on his jacket. "Wait, do you have to leave? I just got back and I thought we could spend then entire weekend together."
Ben continued packing his briefcase. "Cassie, I can't change my plans just because you showed up. By the way it's not Martha's fault there aren't any blueberries. Jonathan's allergic." "What's wrong with you Ben? You're in such a foul mood. Are you sure there isn't something else going on here? You didn't exactly go broke calling me while I was away." "Cassie, I don't have the time for another round of your insecurities. I have a meeting downtown and I'm late. One more thing, last night hasn't changed anything between us. I'm not trying to hurt your feelings but as I told you before you left for Milan, we're just friends. It just can't be anything more than that." "You made that perfectly clear before I left but I still enjoy your company and you seem to enjoy mine, so I don't see what's the problem. But tell me, does this have anything to do with the news about your father and Meg Cummings? I must say I'm not a bit surprised. It's fairly obvious that she's interested in him because of his wealth and power." Ben slammed his briefcase down on the glass table and glared at Cassie. "My father's business is none of yours, so if you'll excuse me I'm late for work." He turned and disappeared into the hall.
As she continued eating her breakfast, Martha approached with a telephone announcing that there was a call for Ben. "Oh, he was expecting that but he had to leave and asked me to take that call. She handed Cassie the phone and returned to the kitchen. "Hello?" "May I please speak to Mr. Ben Evans." "I'm sorry you just missed him. He asked me to take a message." "Oh, would you ask him to call Ray Snyder and tell him that I can start the Cummings investigation this week." Cassie assured him that she would give him the message. After hanging up the phone, she couldn't help but think that the call just might explain his strange behavior. He seemed to be preoccupied with Meg ever since he first saw her and she was not convinced it was because of her relationship with Jonathan. "Well I need to nip this little infatuation in the bud before it goes any further", she thought, then yelled to Martha to bring her the phone book. After looking up Ray's address and jotting it down on a piece of paper, she headed upstairs to change.
An hour later she stood outside the door of Ray Snyder's office thinking she needed this to work if she was going to get Ben back. She knocked on the door as she opened it saying, "Mr. Snyder? I'm Cassie Andrews and I'd like to speak to you about Ben Evans". "I know who you are Ms. Andrews but I'm afraid my business with Mr. Evans is confidential." Cassie sat in the chair opposite his desk, opened her purse and removed an envelope, placing it on his desk.
"Mr. Snyder I'm not asking you to divulge any information I simply want to hire you." "Oh I'm sorry, what can I do for you?" "There's two thousand dollars in the envelope as a down payment for your services." Cassie went on to explain how she wanted him to find out everything he could about Meg Cummings and her relationship with Jonathan and Ben Evans.
"I'm not sure I can do that Ms. Andrews, I have already discussed a possible investigation of Meg Cummings with Ben Evans." Cassie stood pushing away the chair. "What seems to be the problem? Are you telling me that you've never investigated the same person for two different people at the same time?" "Not at all, it's just that I'm aware of your relationship with Ben Evans and this is somewhat unusual." Cassie turned toward the door, "Well if you can't help me I'll find someone else". "Ms. Andrews, please wait. I'm sure I can help you". She stood for a moment before turning back toward him. "As I said this is strictly confidential, Ben Evans is to have no knowledge of this. Do we understand each other?" He picked up the envelope. "It's perfectly clear." Cassie opened the door to leave. "I'll expect your first report at the end of next week. Both my Telephone and Beeper Numbers are in the envelope. Good day!"
After leaving the office, she leaned against the door thinking, "I'm going to find out exactly what is going on Ben and your little friend will wish she never came to San Francisco by the time I get through with her".
Meg had just finished her shower and was relaxing in the garden when she heard the elevator. "Hey Meg, get dressed we're taking you out dancing at Johnny Love's and we're not taking no for an answer", said Steve as Tracy and Randy followed arm in arm. "Guys I'd love to but I have a lot of work I really can't." Tracy grabbed Meg's arm and pulled her toward the bedroom. "Why don't you two guys fix yourself a drink and I'll help Meg get ready. We'll be back in about a half hour." As they entered the bedroom, Tracy said, "Meg you've already showered so now all you have to do is pick out something great to wear". Meg entered her closet searching for an outfit. "Okay, okay give me a few minutes. What's the big deal with you guys anyway." "Well I guess you didn't see the latest edition of 'Elle'." "Oh my God, did you make the cover?", she asked. "Yes, I was just named the first Super Model of the Millenium. So we're going out to celebrate." As Meg continued to dress, she was still screaming with excitement.
"Tracy I am so happy for you. You worked so hard and long for this. I wonder how Cassie Andrews is taking the news. I heard her telling someone at a party that she expected that title again this year." "Who cares what she thinks, let's go."
Two hours later they arrived at the club. It was so crowded but luckily, Steve had made reservations and the table was perfect, away from the bar and dance floor. Meg and Tracy sat at the corner table drinking wine as they watched Steve and Randy making the rounds. "Don't look now but the Wicked Witch of the West just walked in, on the arm of your new friend. Is it me or does she resemble a clinging vine?", she laughed. "Well, if it isn't this year's new Super Model", Cassie said as she approached their table. "It's nice to see you too, Cassie. Aren't you going to introduce me to your handsome friend". "Hello, I'm Ben Evans. Congratulations Ms. Sanders." "Thank you, please call me Tracy." He immediately turned to Meg. "I thought all you did was work?" She smiled and explained that her friends had kidnapped her for the evening to celebrate. "Well I'm sure Jonathan would approve. It's nice to see you enjoying yourself." Cassie could see the looks between them and decided it was time to break up this little party. "If you'll excuse us, our friends are waiting". Ben smiled and said good bye as she pulled him away from the table.
"Wow, so that's Ben Evans. God Meg he's gorgeous and definitely appears interested in you." "Tracy, he's just a friend and very much involved. Besides I'm not ready for such an intense involvement." "Whoa, what do you mean intense? "It's just that when he kissed me last night, uh, let's just say he got too close and I'm not ready for that right now." "Wait, when did this all happen?" "Don't get too excited Tracy, it really wasn't as wild as you may be imagining. Ben stopped by last night to drop off some reports and I invited him to stay for dinner after you bailed on me. Well, one thing led to another and he kissed me. That's all there was to it." Tracy smiled saying, "Did you kiss him back?" "Well, kind of, but it wasn't what you think. Besides, I told him I wasn't interested." "Is that because you're seeing Jonathan? No, don't answer that. Whatever is going on you will never convince me you're having an affair with him." "Tracy, can we please just change the subject. Besides I'm starved. Why don't you try to find our waitress and get some menus." Tracy nodded and headed toward the bar.
As Tracy stood at the bar talking to one of her male model friends, Cassie interrupted, "How in the world did you ever get the Super Model title?" "Well, that's easy to answer. I actually did it the old fashioned way, I earned it and I didn't have to sleep with anyone, unlike what some models have done. But you would know better than I would, wouldn't you Cassie?" She slammed her glass on the bar saying, "I just stopped by to give you a word of advice. Don't get too carried away with your new title. It won't last forever".
"Tell me Cassie, what bothers you more, losing the title or losing Ben to Meg?" "What the hell are you talking about?" Tracy couldn't help but laugh. "Oh didn't he tell you that he had dinner at her place last night?" "Really? Well, it sounds like your little friend is playing Father and Son against each other." "Meg would never do something like that and if Ben is hanging around her, he obviously is interested." "Well, she couldn't have made an impression because when he got home he couldn't wait to make love to me. And it was very hot."
Tracy couldn't stand listening to her insults any longer. Before she knew it she threw the drink she was holding in Cassie's face and yelled, "You're such a Bitch!" "I'm going to scratch your eyes out!" As she reached for Tracy's throat, Ben ran up behind her, grabbing her arms and pulling her away. "Settle down Cassie, you're acting like a child." "Me? What about her?" "Just let it go. Please excuse us", he said as he pulled her back to their table.
During the next few hours, Ben found it hard not to watch Meg dancing and laughing with her friends, an action that had not gone unnoticed by Cassie. He couldn't help wishing he was with her instead of listening to Cassie's incessant chatter about how ridiculous it was that Tracy Sanders was the new Super Model of the year.
"Hey you two, are you just going to just sit there all night", asked Randy as he approached the table. He was the playboy of the group and they all loved it. "You can't be serious, we've been dancing all night", said Meg. Before she knew it, he was pulling her toward the dance floor. "As for you Ms. Super Model, I believe this is our dance", said Steve. If people at the club didn't know better they would swear that all four were more than just friends. They would be right, they were much more. They were a family.
After a few more dances, Meg begged Randy to sit one out. "You forget you're a few years younger than me", she laughed. "Oh please, you're what three years older?" Meg smiled, "Well maybe I'm just out of shape". "So tell me how are things going with this new girl I hear that you've been seeing? Alice, isn't it?" "Jeez, is nothing secret in our building?" "Oh don't be mad, Tracy told me that you met Alice at your last surfing competition and that she was really nice." Randy couldn't resist teasing her, he loved the way she would get so upset if she thought she hurt someone's feelings. It was so easy to get her to fall for the joke. "Meg, relax I was only kidding."
Even though Meg was slightly older he loved her like a younger sister. He grabbed and hugged her as she struggled to break his grip. "Hey you two, are you sure there isn't something going on here we should know about?", Steve said laughing as he and Tracy sat down. "Stop it Steve. Randy and Meg are just friends, you know that. If you want a real story you should take a look at the table in the back, last year's Super Model is aging as we speak." Meg couldn't help but laugh. "Tracy, you are so bad." "Would someone else help me out here, that guy Ben Evans hasn't taken his eyes off our Meg all night." Steve and Randy both laughed. "Okay you've had your fun, can we go now?", Meg asked. "Sure Meg. How about my place for coffee?" They all nodded in agreement and left.
"I think I've had enough fun for one night, so if you're ready", Ben said as he stood and pulled out her chair. When the cab pulled up to Cassie's apartment building, Ben asked the driver to wait. "Aren't you coming up?" "Not this evening. I'm really tired and have a lot of work to do before my Monday morning meeting." They walked into the lobby and Ben pressed the button for the elevator. As Cassie opened the front door she turned, leaned in and kissed Ben on the lips. "I wish you would stay." He moved away saying, "I'm sorry I can't, it's been a long day." With that Ben turned and disappeared out the front door. "You won this round Meg, but it's a victory short lived, I promise."
For the next three weeks, Ray Snyder tracked Meg's movement in and out of work, delivering reports to Cassie every Friday as instructed. In addition to her social engagements with Jonathan, Meg was spending many of her evenings meeting with Ben, including some late night dinners at his home. It was obvious by the photos, that Ben's interest was more personal that he was willing to admit.
When he told her that they needed some time apart, she knew Meg was the reason and now she had the proof. All that was left to do was to figure out how to destroy Meg's relationship with both Jonathan and Ben. It seemed odd that Ben still appeared interested in her even though she was reportedly involved with Jonathan.
Meg was in her office when she got the call from Jonathan requesting a late night meeting. When she arrived in his office, all of the top executives were in attendance. "I realize this was short notice but I just wanted to let you all know that the Merger with Dynacorp will be announced at a joint press conference at nine tomorrow morning."
"There will be a celebration at my home on Saturday evening and you're all invited. Eleanor will provide all the details tomorrow after the announcement." Just as everyone started to leave, Ben approached Meg asking her to join him for dinner. Before she could answer, Jonathan called to her. "Excuse us Ben but I think that dinner will have to wait I need to speak to Meg alone, so if you don't mind we will see you tomorrow." Ben reluctantly said good night and left.
"First of all I can't thank you enough for the great job you've been doing and I realize it's been hard not totally being honest with Ben and Jason but it's almost over, I promise. I also sense that Ben's feelings for you are deep and I know this is hard." "Jonathan it's been my pleasure. I'm just glad I could help." He sat on the edge of his desk and reached for her hand. "Before the press conference tomorrow I would like you to take some time off work and I have some where special for you to enjoy it." Meg smiled. "Jonathan that's really not necessary." "Sorry Meg, I won't take no for an answer and the arrangements have all been made. Besides it's only a few days and I still expect you to attend the party on Saturday." Jonathan stood up and walked Meg to the door. "Now go home and pack. Dennis will pick you up at eight and take you to my winery in St. Helena. You'll love it, there's a small staff so you will be pampered and yet have all the privacy you desire. There's also a great stable of horses and I know how you love to ride. So go and have a great time. I'll see you in a few days", he said as he walked her out.
The next morning, the Intercom buzzer sounded at exactly eight. "Dennis?" "Yes Miss I just wanted to let you know that I was here." "Great. I'll be down in a few minutes." As Meg stepped off the elevator, Dennis tipped his hat and reached for her luggage. "Please allow me." She thanked him and followed him to the car. After she was settled into the limousine, Dennis sat in the driver's seat and told her that Jonathan wanted to make sure she relaxed and enjoy the trip. He also informed her that there refreshments in the server. "Well Dennis, I think I'll take his advice", she said smiling.
After the Press Conference Ben was still looking around the room for Meg, wondering why she wasn't in attendance. When he saw his chance he pulled Jason aside. "So where is Meg? I thought for sure she wouldn't miss this Merger announcement." "She's gone out of town for a few days and wouldn't tell me where she was going but she said she would be back for the party on Saturday."
"That's odd she didn't say anything to me." Jason patted Ben on the shoulder saying, "Well don't feel bad, she use to tell me everything. All I know is it wasn't planned before the meeting last night and I get the feeling Jonathan knows all about it. If he didn't he would have been the first person asking where she was. Ben, I need to ask this. What's going on with you two?". "Nothing yet Jason but I want Meg in my life and I know she's interested in me too", Ben said as he smiled and started to walk away. "Wait, I thought she was involved with Jonathan?" "Oh, something is going on between them but it's not an affair. I'm sure of that."
"Dad may I speak to you for just a minute?" Jonathan excused himself and walked with Ben into the hallway. "I just wanted to ask where Meg was. I thought she would have been here." "She's fine. I insisted she take a short vacation because she's been working so hard these past months." "Do you happen to know where she went?" Jonathan looked at him smiling. "Why are you so interested?" "Uh, I'm not, I just wondered. She was working on something for me and I was hoping to get it today." Jonathan turned toward the conference room saying, "Ben, it can't be that important that you can't wait. She'll be back on Saturday. Now let's go back to the meeting."
Ben stood back watching the group congratulating each other on the Merger but couldn't stop thinking about Meg. He wondered why Jonathan wouldn't reveal her whereabouts and the fact that she wasn't at his side was even more a mystery, one he was determined to solve. "Well I'm not going to get any answers here", he thought as he headed back to his office.
It was almost ten when Dennis turned into the Evans Winery. The mile long entrance leading to the house was flanked on both sides by endless rows of vines. At the end of the drive was a magnificent flag stone architecture with matching horse stables located about five hundred yards away. To the right of the main house was a beautiful pool area surrounded by the most spectacular gardens that she had ever seen.
Stepping out of the car, she was greeted by an Hispanic woman in her early fifties. "Welcome Ms. Cummings, my name is Rosa Vesquez. Mr. Evans told us that you will be staying with us for the rest of the week." "It's a pleasure to meet you Rosa, please call me Meg. Jonathan said that this place was very special and now I see why." "Well, wait until you see all of it, you won't want to leave."
As they entered the stone foyer, Rosa asked Dennis to take the luggage to the last bedroom on the second floor and then led Meg into the main living area. It was an impressive room decorated with all Spanish style furniture and beige tiled flooring. "Welcome Ms. Cummings, I'm Pete Simms but everyone just calls me Chef." She smiled saying, "It's a pleasure to meet you and please call me Meg. Jonathan tells me your meals are out of this world." "Well, I can see that we're going to become fast friends", he laughed as he kissed her hand. He led Meg into the kitchen saying, "Lunch will be ready around noon. Why don't you relax, take a walk around the winery and we'll see you in a couple of hours." Meg nodded in agreement and left through the kitchen exit.
As Ben packed his briefcase, Eleanor entered asking if he knew how to reach his father. "Why is there a problem?" "No, I don't think so. Ms. Vesquez called from the Winery to let Mr. Evans know that his guest arrived. I just wanted to let him know." "Well I think he's still with the Dynacorp people."
"Thanks, I'll just leave him a note on his desk", she responded as she left closing the door behind. Ben leaned his head against the back of his chair thinking, "Evans Winery? That has to be where Meg went. But why alone? Why wasn't Jonathan joining her?" He picked up the phone and dialed his secretary's extension, leaving her a message that he would be out of town on business for a few days. He went back to the Mansion and packed.
Just as he was about to leave the house, Cassie telephoned. "Ben, I saw the Press Conference and wanted to congratulate you on the Merger. I'd love to take you to dinner tonight and celebrate if you don't have plans?" "I'm sorry I can't. I was just leaving town for a few days. Maybe we can get together for a drink when I return." "That would be great, why don't you give me a call when you come back. Bye Ben." Minutes after hanging up the phone, he headed out the front door and jumped into his Black Jaguar. As he drove away all he could think about was being with Meg without interruptions.
Rosa and Pete were discussing the lunch menu when Meg along with Jake Smith, the caretaker of the stables, walked into the kitchen. "What is that delicious aroma?" "Oh, those are my famous Chicken Quesedilla, I hope you're hungry. Meg walked to the stove, drew in a deep breath. "Mm, they smell great. I'm starved. It must be the air up here, I can't remember the last time I was ever this hungry."
"Great, it's almost ready. Have a seat while I finish and tell me how you liked our stables." "Oh they're magnificent. I've never seen a more incredible group of horses and Jake is wonderful. He made sure I was introduced to each and every one of them." "That's our Jake." "He also promised that I could treat them to carrots after dinner." "Jake, she's here to relax not work", said Pete. "Believe me this is the best time I've had in the last few months." "Well, Jonathan asked us to make sure you enjoyed your stay. In fact he made us all promise." Pete placed a Quesedilla in front of her asking, "Now, tell me what you think." They all sat and watched as Meg took a bite, closed her eyes and licked her lips. "Mm, that is so delicious." Pete smiled replying, "Oh, I can tell I am going to have fun this week trying out all of my favorites on you". Rosa and Jake just shook their heads and laughed.
After lunch Jake saddled one of his favorite horses, a beautiful Palomino and the one that he knew was perfect for her. "His name is Apache, he's very gentle and if you get lost don't worry, he knows the way back to the barn. If you follow the path up the ridge on the right, it leads to a great meadow where you can spend some time alone. Apache loves to graze there." "That sounds perfect, she said as she threw her backpack over the saddle, mounted and galloped away.
When she reached the open pasture, it was everything Jake said it was. Plush green grass, wild flowers and the most inviting pond with cascading waterfalls. Meg patted Apache's neck saying, "Now I know why you like this meadow. You've got great taste". She slid off his back, grabbed her backpack and spread the blanket. It was so much warmer here than in the city and the water looked to appealing to resist. "Okay Apache if you won't tell anyone I think I'm going for a swim." Meg walked to the side of the pond that was bordered by the thick brush and discarded her clothes. She was so anxious to enjoy a midday swim that she never heard his horse approach.
As Ben's horse broke through the clearing he saw Apache in the pasture grazing along side an empty blanket. He looked around for Meg as he dismounted, dropped the reigns and walked toward the blanket. Suddenly, a splash in the nearby pond drew his attention. He walked toward the sound but saw nothing until she emerged gasping for air, at the base of the smaller waterfall. Her back was to him as she stood waist deep, throwing her head back allowing the water to run down her body from her shoulders.
Ben removed his sunglasses as if they were obstructing his view. He couldn't believe how beautiful she looked as she ran her hands through her long black hair while the water ran down her naked back toward her slender hips. Before she discovered anyone was watching, he decided it would be best if he retreated allowing Meg to finish her swim. He was afraid that she would never forgive him if she knew he was there watching. He mounted his horse and returned to the path just beyond the clearing and waited until she stepped from the pond, dressed and sat on the blanket brushing her hair for a few minutes before laying down on the blanket, letting the sun warm her skin.
He approached slowly watching as she stretched her arms over her head and stared at the cloudless blue sky. She was wearing blue jeans and a low cut yellow midriff sweater. The further she stretched the more the sweater raised higher, exposing the bottom of her breasts. "That swim felt so great. I can't remember the last time I felt so relaxed. Jonathan was right, this is the perfect place to unwind", she thought. Suddenly she heard his voice. "So this is where you disappeared to." She sat up and saw Ben dismounting his horse and walking toward her smiling. He was wearing blue jeans and a white v-neck pullover shirt. "Ben! What on earth are you doing here?"
He slowly removed his sunglasses and smiled. "I didn't mean to startle you. As for what I'm doing here, I thought I would take a few days off now that the Merger is official. I had no idea that you would be here. After all, this is my family's property." He moved closer to the blanket and sat down. "I'm sorry Ben I didn't mean it the way it sounded. I just didn't expect to see you here or anyone else for that matter." "Don't apologize, I was surprised when Rosa told me that you were here. Jonathan said that you went away for a few days but he didn't say where. I never expected you to be here." "Actually Jonathan recommended that I come here and I have to say it's one of the most beautiful places that I've ever seen."
Ben leaned back on his elbows and eyed the semi-dry yellow sweater top. "Well, it didn't take you long to find my favorite spot and it appears that you enjoyed the pond as well." Meg blushed thinking that if he had arrived earlier he would have seen her nature swim. "Uh, I'm sorry. It was so warm that I couldn't resist." "Please don't apologize. It's usually the first thing that I do when I come here. Actually, that's not quite true. There is another place on the property that is more special but this is a close second."
Ben lay on the blanket, closed his eyes as he placed his hands behind his head and released a soft sigh. "God the sun feels so good, doesn't it? I don't think I realized how much I needed some time away until now."
Meg couldn't resist smiling as she watched him lying there as the sun beat down on his gorgeous tanned face. "I hope you don't mind my being here", he said. "Uh, no not at all. Is Cassie at the house?", she asked. "No, we're not seeing each other anymore." "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that."
Ben turned on his side and looked deep into her eyes. "I couldn't see her anymore, especially knowing how I feel about you." "Ben, I don't know what to say." He slid his hand around the back of her neck, slowly pulled her toward his mouth and softly kissed her lips. After a few seconds, he moved away saying, "It's getting late and Chef warned me not to be late for dinner". Ben placed her backpack and blanket on Apache before they mounted and headed back to the winery.
They had just enough time to shower and change before dinner. Ben was the first to arrive in the living room where Rosa was waiting with his favorite Scotch. "Rosa, how is it that you always know what I want before I ask for it? What would I do without you?", he said as he leaned down and placed a kiss on her cheek. "Senor Ben, we've missed you around here. It has been such a long time", she giggled. Within minutes, Meg appeared wearing a low cut floral sundress. "I hope I haven't kept anyone waiting." "No Chef hasn't barked even once as yet", he laughed, winking at Rosa before she disappeared into the kitchen.
Ben turned back to Meg saying, "It was certainly worth the wait. You look beautiful." "Thank you. You look very handsome yourself." Ben smiled and handed Meg a glass of wine, just as Rosa returned announcing that dinner was ready. The dinning room was romantically set, with candles and fresh flowers. "Oh Rosa, this is lovely" "Gracias Senorita, please have a seat, I'll be back in just a moment."
"Ben, this place is incredible. Has your family owned it very long?" "My father bought it for my mom about fifteen years ago for their anniversary. They came here for a visit and feel in love with the property." "Do you come here often?" "Actually, I've come more often since my Mom died. I feel closer to her here than anywhere else."
For the next two hours Ben and Meg relaxed while they enjoyed Pete's famous Veal Scaloppini, a side of Fettuccini Alfredo and the Winery's best Champagne. "That was absolutely delicious. The last time I had this dish I had just arrived in the city and Jason took me to this romantic Italian restaurant called Allegro's."
Ben smiled and took a sip of wine. "Really? Pete was one of the chefs at that bistro when Jonathan first met him. He loved the dish so much, he hired him on the spot. I wouldn't be surprised if he called Pete and ask him to make it special for you." "Well, it was wonderful but I'm afraid at this rate I may gain a few pounds before I leave", she said laughing. "Oh, I doubt that. Besides, I think Apache will give you plenty of exercise."
"Ben, may I ask you something personal?" Before responding, he moved behind Meg's chair, saying, "Why don't we move to the living room and get more comfortable first. Then you can ask me anything. But if I answer your question, does that mean I get to ask you one in return?" Meg smiled saying, "I have the feeling I will live to regret this." Ben walked to the bar and poured a couple of drinks. "I was just curious why it is that you have a British accent and Jonathan doesn't." Ben handed her a drink and sat next to her on the couch. "Well that's an easy question to answer. My mother was British and insisted that I be educated in England, so I lived in private schools for the first twelve years, then attended Oxford. After graduation, I got a job at my father's London office. So I'm definitely more British than American." Ben ran his fingers through his thick black hair and smiled saying, "Now it's my turn." "Oh, that's right I did agree. So ask before I change my mind. But if this has anything to do with Jonathan there are things I have promised not to discuss." "Okay, the subject of my dad is closed, for now. Actually I'm curious why you moved here from New York. I got the impression that you're running away from a broken heart. Am I wrong?"
Meg nervously adjusted herself on the couch. "No, you're not wrong. I was living with someone, his name is Philip Matthews, and he's an artist in SOHO. We were, uh, I mean I was very much in love, in the beginning." Ben interrupted. "What happened?" "Well, at first it was wonderful and I needed Philip when Jason moved away. But our relationship changed when his art stopped selling, he started looking for other things to fulfill him. For months, I ignored the excessive drinking, and the other women but when he... You don't really want to hear this."
Ben took Meg's hand in his, resting it on his thigh. "I really do, please tell me what happened." Meg took a deep breath before continuing. "The night that I left, Philip came home drunk and very angry. He had been turned down by another art agent and was looking for someone to take it out on, and I was there.
When he insisted that we make love, I refused, which I guess I shouldn't have because it only made things worse." Meg pulled her hand away, stood and walked to the patio doors. Ben walked behind her and rested his hands on her shoulders saying, "What did he do to you?" "Ben, I've tried to forget that night and I really can't talk about this." "Are you afraid I won't understand?" "No, I just don't want to relive it with you or anyone. What happened is between Philip and me, no one else." As the tears streamed down her face Ben tried to pull her closer but Meg pulled away and ran upstairs to her room. "God, what have I done? I shouldn't have pushed her to relive that night. How could anyone hurt Meg", he thought.
When Meg returned, Ben was no where to be found. "That's odd, maybe he decided to go to bed", she thought. Just as she was about to head back upstairs, Rosa appeared. "Meg, Ben asked if you would meet him at the stables." "Did he say why?", she asked as she turned toward the front door. "No I'm afraid not." "Thank you Rosa, good night." Meg left and walked toward the stables. It was a beautiful clear night and the air was filled with the smell of night blooming jasmine and grapes ripping on the vine.
When she entered the Stables, the only lights appeared to be coming from Apache's stall. As she approached his stall, Apache stuck his head over the door startling her. "Apache, you scared me half to death. What are you doing awake?" "I think he was waiting for his evening treat", Ben said as he approached from behind, presenting her with a bunch of leafy carrots wrapped in a Red Ribbon. Meg couldn't resist laughing. She took the carrots and began feeding Apache.
"Thank you Ben", she said as she teased Apache by tugging at the carrot he was trying to devour. "It's my pleasure." He stepped back and watched as she got lost in her tug of war with Apache. It was amazing to see the transformation in her. Only moments ago she was in such pain and now her face reflected those of an innocent child sharing secrets with her best friend. He had never seen her like this. In fact he had never seen anyone react to a horse's friendship the way Meg did. She was completely at peace, almost as if no one else in the world existed outside of this stone and wooden stall. After Apache had finished all the carrots, he lay down on the hay contented that he had put in a full day. "Sleep well my friend", she said as she stroked his face. Minutes later she stood up and closed the stall door behind her.
Ben was leaning against the stone wall opposite Apache's stall smiling when she saw him. "Thank you Ben. How did you know this was just what I needed?" "I wish I could take the credit but I'm afraid Apache is the real miracle worker. Either way I'm glad it helped and I really do apologize for bringing up such a painful memory before." Meg walked toward Ben and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
She started to move away when he placed his hands on her face and pulled her close placing soft kisses on her mouth, each more passionate than the one before. Meg could feel herself becoming more aroused as he deepened each kiss. Just when she felt her legs could no longer support her weight, Ben moved away. "It's late, we should get some sleep. Tomorrow I'd love to take you somewhere very special, if you aren't busy?" Meg stroked his chest and looked into his dark blue eyes. "I'd love that." Ben smiled, placed an arm around her waist and walked her back to the house. When they arrived at her room, Ben placed another kiss on her mouth and said good night. "Before I forget, wear something comfortable for riding. I'll meet you downstairs tomorrow morning around 10:30."
As Meg showered, she couldn't help but think about Ben. She never imagined wanting to trust anyone after Philip but somehow Ben seemed different and she really didn't know why. After stepping out of the shower, she towel dried her hair and slipped under the covers. Within minutes after placing her head on the pillow, she was fast asleep.

This Chapter picks up the morning Ben invites Meg to his special place.
Chapter 7 - The Winery's Stone Cottage
It was almost ten when Meg woke and saw the time flashing on the clock radio. "Oh my God I'm going to be late", she said as she ran to the shower. After she dressed and arrived downstairs, Ben came rushing through the kitchen doors holding a picnic basket. "Well sleepyhead are you ready for a great adventure?", he asked grabbing her arm and pulling her out the front door. "Ben, where are we going?" He led her toward the stables where Jake had already saddled Apache and Telepathy for them. "I told you we're going somewhere special, so no more questions. Mount up and follow me. I promise you're going to love it."
They headed off through the vineyards toward the ridge at the edge of the property. After two hours of riding through a thick bushy trail, they came upon a small clearing and a vine covered stone cottage with an adjacent horse barn. As she dismounted, she looked around admiring the setting. It was one of the most beautiful places she had ever seen. There were wild flowers surrounding the building and a large carved wooden bridge straddling the brook in front of the property. "Ben, this looks like something out of a story book." He smiled grabbed her hand and kissed it. "That's exactly what my mother thought when she first saw this cottage. It's the main reason that Jonathan bought the property. Come with me, it gets better. She designed the interior."
Ben led her over the wooden bridge and into the house. She gasped as she walked through the entrance. The first floor was completely open with a large living area in the center. To the left side of the room was a section set aside for dining and to the right was a hallway leading to the Master Bedroom and Guest room. The entire main room was furnished completely with white blanched furniture, large overstuffed sofas and chairs, local art and antiques. At the center of the room was a magnificent field stone fireplace. Accenting the fireplace was a slate mantel, containing numerous family pictures and above the mantel was a portrait of an attractive dark hair woman in her early fifties with deep blue eyes. "Jonathan commissioned that portrait a year before she died. Her name was Fiona. She was the most incredible woman I've ever known. This was their place and she left it to me in her will." "Ben, she's beautiful. Her eyes are so expressive. I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet her. Are you more like her than Jonathan?"
Ben moved close behind Meg saying, "Well, people that knew us both say I have her personality. She was so supportive of everything I did, except for the women I chose to date. You would have been someone that she would have really approved of. Months after she past, I found a letter addressed to me on this mantel. She wrote it a few days before she died. In it she said she hoped some day I would share this special place with the woman that I loved". "Did you ever bring Cassie here?" Ben moved around to face Meg saying, "No, I'm not in love with Cassie. You're the only one that I've ever brought here."
Meg could hardly breathe. "Ben, I don't know what to say?" Before she could continue, he placed his arms around her waist. "You don't have to say anything, I just wanted to share it with someone who I knew would understand how special it was to me."
Ben smiled and moved toward the picnic basket saying, "Enough serious talk. I brought you here to relax and enjoy yourself. How about a walk around the property? It really is special, in addition to the house my mother left me 1000 acres of prime vineyards.
Two hours later, they returned to the cottage. "Ben, this place is wonderful and I certainly have worked up an appetite. "Me too, the kitchen is to your left, so I'll get the food if you will get the utensils and set the table." Meg walked through the double doors to what she could only describe as a gourmet kitchen. "Ben, this place is fully stocked", she yelled. "I know. I asked Pete and Rosa to make sure it was before we arrived just in case I forgot the picnic basket", he responded laughing.
As they laid out the food and set the table, they heard the rumblings of an approaching storm. "Ben do you think we should head back?" "It's hard to tell, sometimes these storms roll in and disappear as fast as they arrive. Even though I hate to cut this evening short, it probably would be a good idea to leave right after we eat." Suddenly, Ben's cell phone rang. "Hello?" He paused and listened for a minute. "Thanks Rosa, maybe it would be best if we ride the storm out here. If we're not back by noon, please ask Jake to send the truck and horse trailer." "Tell him that the horses will be fine for the evening, they have plenty of grain and hay. We'll see you tomorrow. Bye!"
After their meal, it became evident that the storm's intensity was growing. "Meg why don't you relax by the fire, I need to check on the horses." "I'm going with you, I need to make sure Apache is okay." He nodded, grabbed a blanket and threw it over their heads as they ran toward the barn. When they entered, Apache and Telepathy appeared unsettled by the storm.
Meg ran into Apache's stall and patted him in an attempt to settle him down. "Easy boy, it's okay. I won't let anything hurt you, I promise." It took almost an hour to settle them both. Ben opened Apache's stall door saying, "They should be okay for the night, now that they've been fed. We should leave before they get upset again".
The Storm was raging more than ever and even their attempt to run from the barn to the house without getting completely soaked was unsuccessful. As they entered the cottage, Ben ushered Meg close to the fire, pulling a shawl from a nearby chair and placing it around her shoulders. "I don't think this is going to be good enough, you're completely soaked and now you're shivering. We need to get out of these wet clothes. Why don't you take a nice hot bath in the Master Bedroom and I'll use the shower in the quest room. I'm sure there are some robes that we can wear while our clothes are drying. "When you're ready I'll fix us something to drink by the fire. But before I change I should get more wood, it's going to be a cold night."
For the next half-hour Meg relaxed in the hot water trying to get rid of the chill from the rain. "God, this feels so great, I almost hate to get out but the water is starting to loose it's heat", she thought. Minutes later she stepped out of the tub, wrapped herself in a towel and walked into the bedroom. She smiled when she saw the fire that Ben had started in the Master suite's fireplace. "God this place is wonderful", she thought as she entered the closet and retrieved a robe.
When she entered in the living room Ben was there, wearing a black silk robe that had slipped off his leg as he knelt on one knee adding more logs on the fire. He was so handsome and the glow of the fire made him even more so. She could feel her heart pounding as she watched him staring into the fire and couldn't help but wonder why he was spending so much time with her. And why was she the only woman he had brought to this special hideaway?
"Thank you for starting the fire in the bedroom, it was such a nice surprise when I came out of the bath." Ben threw the last piece of wood in his hands on the fire, stood and turned around. Meg was standing in the shadow of the firelight, wearing a white cotton robe. He couldn't remember seeing anyone looking more beautiful than she did at that moment.
"I'm glad you liked it. It may get pretty cold overnight so I thought it would make you more comfortable. Why don't you sit near the fire while I get us some Brandy." "Sounds great!" As Ben poured the drinks, Meg looked around the room and smiled. "Well, it's pretty obvious why your parents loved this place. They must have been very happy here and very much in love." Ben handed her a drink and sat next to her on the couch. "They were. When my mother left it to me, I wondered if I would ever find the kind of love that she had with my father."
As Meg sat sipping her drink, she moved a hand to the back of her neck rubbing it in an effort to soothe a muscle ache. "Let me do that", he said as he turned her back to him and pulled her between his legs. Before she could respond Meg felt his long fingers move up and down along the sides of her neck gently massaging. Each time he reached the edge of the robe, he moved his hands further under the cloth extending the massage to her shoulders. "This would be easier if your robe wasn't in the way." Without saying a word Meg opened her robe just enough to allow it to drop off her shoulders as she held the lapels closed above her cleavage. As his hands continued the sensual caress on her shoulders and neck, Meg moaned enjoying the feel of his touch. Suddenly, he moved his mouth close to her ear and whispered, "How does this feel?" "Oh, it's wonderful. Thank you."
When he returned his hands to her neck, he silently urged her to rest her head back on his chest as he continued the massage. Hearing her moan with each caress, he leaned down and tilted her mouth toward his, then kissed her softly. "Meg, I've fallen in love with you." Before she could respond, he moved a hand to the side of her face and pulled her toward his mouth kissing her more passionately than before. As the kiss deepened, she turned toward his chest and settled willingly into his arms. Just as his hand covered her breast, an enormous clash of thunder startled Meg causing her to abruptly pull away from his embrace. "Baby, it's okay, it's just the storm", he said as he attempted to pull her close again.
She placed her hands on his chest and pushed away saying, "I can't do this, I'm sorry." Suddenly, she stood pulling the robe over her shoulders and walked toward the fireplace. "Ben, I'm very tired. I think I should go to bed." "Meg, are you acting like this because of my father?" "No, it's me. I shouldn't have let you kiss me. I should go to bed." He could tell that she was growing more uneasy with the storm's intensity. "No, it's my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you. You're right, maybe it would be best if we both get some sleep. Come on I'll walk you to your room." When they reached the Master Bedroom, Ben insisted that he add some additional wood to the fire so it would last the night. After the fire was fully attended to, he said good night and disappeared down the hall to the guestroom.
Meg dropped her robe and slid under the comforter growing more disturbed by the thunder clashes and blinding lightning. She turned her attention toward the dancing flames of the fire, trying desperately to focus on something more pleasant. Within minutes, she was fast asleep.
Down the hall, Ben laid in bed resting his hands behind his head, finding it difficult to get rid of the image in his mind of Meg lying in bed, naked and alone. "I've got to get her out of my head or I'll never get to sleep tonight." Suddenly, he heard cries coming from her room. "What the hell?", he thought as he threw on his robe and raced down the hall. When he opened the bedroom door, Meg was thrashing around in bed crying repeatedly in her sleep, "Philip don't, please stop". She didn't wake when he called her name, so he ran to the side of the bed and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Meg, wake up it's only a dream. Open your eyes, you're just dreaming."
Her eyes fluttered open unaware that she was pulling the comforter to her neck still yelling for Philip to stop. Ben continued talking to her in a soft voice attempting to reassure her that Philip wasn't there and that she was safe. Within seconds, she calmed herself realizing where she was and moved to a sitting position. "Ben, I'm so sorry, I guess I was dreaming. I didn't mean to wake you." "Don't apologize, I'm just glad you're okay. Just try to relax, I'll be right back." When he returned, he handed her a glass of brandy. "Here, take a sip. Tell me, did I cause this?" Meg took a sip and then said, "No Ben, it wasn't you." She sat silent for a few seconds before continuing. "It was the storm." He placed his hand on her arm, rubbing up and down trying to comfort her. "Meg, you're safe. Besides, I'm here and I won't let anything happen to you."
"I use to love to watch thunderstorms but ever since that last night with Philip I've been afraid of them." Ben took her hand in his saying, "Meg, what happened that night?" She pulled her hand away and sat silent for a few moments before responding. "Meg, please talk to me."
"The night I left New York, there was a terrible storm. I wasn't feeling well so I decided not to attend Philip's art latest exhibition. I stayed home and went to bed early. By the time he came home he was drunk and furious that the art critics had dismissed his show as a feeble attempt to recapture a onetime successful showing. Before I realized what was happening he thew me against the wall, then dragged me to the bed by my arm. My head was bleeding and throbbing so hard that I wasn't even aware that he was tearing off my nightgown. The next thing...." Ben reached for hand again and held it tight saying, "Baby, what did he do to you?" "The next thing I knew he was forcing himself on me. I tried to fight but he was so drunk and strong. He kept on insisting that his failure was all my fault because I didn't give him the support he needed and told me that he was going to make me pay. He continued raping me while the storm raged. As soon as he fell asleep, I got dressed, packed and left. Ever since then, I've had nightmares whenever I see a storm."
Ben's heart ached as he moved close and pulled her into his arms trying to hide the rage he was feeling toward Philip for hurting Meg in such a way. "Meg, I am so sorry for what Philip did but I'm not him. I love you and I will never do anything like that, I promise." She laid her head against his chest without saying a word. "You need some sleep, maybe I should leave." As he started to move off the bed, she tightened her grip saying, "Don't leave, please. I don't want to be alone." "What can I do to help?" "You can stay with me tonight, and love me."
He placed a few soft kisses on her forehead and whispered, "Meg, there is nothing I would love more than to show you how much I care for you but maybe it would be better if I just hold you until you fall asleep". She placed her hands on his face and softly kissed his lips. "Ben, I haven't wanted anyone to touch me since that night with Philip, that is not until now. I need to know what it feels like to be loved. Please show me." "Meg, I've never wanted anyone as much as I want and need you." He covered her mouth softly kissing her, then moved from the top to the bottom lip sucking gently with each kiss. Slowly his hands slid down her neck to inside the edges of the comforter, stroking her soft skin.
Meg broke the kiss moaning as he continued softly moving his hands up and down her naked form as his lips caressed her neck. Gently he slid her down in the bed onto her back and cupped her face in his hands, then covered her mouth again this time teasing her tongue with his. She needed him and couldn't deny the passion rising in her any longer. Her moans grew louder with each attack of his mouth. "Ben, I want you so much, please love me." He moved off her, stepped out of bed and removed his robe. For a few seconds he just stood there absorbing her naked beauty. He had dreamt of this moment for so many months and had every intention of savoring each second. As he moved over her, he rested his weight on one arm and kissed her passionately before lying on his side. Nuzzling her neck, he whispered, "I've never loved anyone as much as I love you Meg". Suddenly, he moved over her and began to make love to her with more passion than ever before.
Minutes later Ben collapsed pulling Meg onto his chest saying, "I've wanted to make love to you for so long but I never thought it would be like this." He tightened his caress and placed a kiss on the top of her head. Outside, the thunder and lightning raged as Ben held her close. "Meg, are you okay?" She snuggled closer to his chest saying, "I thought I knew what love was when I first got involved with Philip, but I never felt like this."
"And how do you feel?" She nestled into his arms saying, "I never knew love making could be so fulfilling". "Oh Meg, I'm so glad you said that because I feel the same way", he said lifting her mouth toward his. As he continued to kiss her, he began to arouse her passion again. "Ben, I don't want this night to ever end." "It doesn't have to Meg. I want to make love to you all night." For the next two hours, they continued making love as the storm raged, almost as if they were part of it. Afterwards they fell into an exhausted sleep in each other's arms.
Meg was first to wake. It was dawn and the storm had disappeared. She couldn't believe what had happened. For so many months, she resisted the temptation to get lost in his charms but that all ended last night, along with the painful memories of Philip. She felt whole for the first time in almost a year. Gently, she moved off his arm and out of bed. Trying not to wake him, she tiptoed into the Master Bath and started the shower.
As she stepped under the stream of hot water, she lathered the loofah sponge and began spreading the soap from her neck to her breasts in small circular motions. Suddenly, she felt his hand cup hers as he whispered, "Let me". He released a deep sigh saying, "I wish we could stay like this forever but if we don't leave soon, Rosa will send someone to find us". Meg reluctantly followed him from the shower to the bedroom and dressed. It was almost eleven when they mounted and rode back to the main house.
When they entered the main room, Rosa appeared in the entrance. "Senor, Senorita are you okay? The Storm was so bad, we were all concerned for you both." Ben gently hugged Rosa saying, "We're fine as you can see but we could use some lunch if Chef's around". He's waiting for you in the kitchen and he's been making your favorite "Ham and Mushroom Fritad". "Great, I'm starved." As they headed for the kitchen, Rosa stopped and turned saying, "Oh Meg I almost forgot, Mr. Jonathan Evans called and asked you to call him as soon as you returned. He said it was very important". "Thanks Rosa. Ben, give me a minute, I'll meet you in the kitchen after I make the call."
"Hello Jonathan, its Meg." She stood and listened for a while as Jonathan explained what he needed. "Please tell Dennis that I'll be ready in two hours. Bye." Before she rejoined Ben in the kitchen, she packed her things thinking that she had made a terrible mistake getting involved with Ben when she couldn't possibly continue the relationship while pretending to be involved with Jonathan. "There is too much at risk to throw it all away now. God, why did I let this happen and how am I going to explain why I can't let this continue?", she thought.
Just as she closed the clasp of the suitcase, Ben entered the bedroom asking what was keeping her. "Ben, I have to go back to the city for a meeting with Jonathan." "Oh no, I was hoping we could spend a few days together." "I'm sorry but he wouldn't have asked if it wasn't important." "Well, why don't I drive you back to the city." "No you can't, uh, I mean Dennis is picking me up within the hour. But before he gets here, we need to talk." Ben moved toward her and placed his arms around her waist saying, "Well, if it's about wanting to pick up where we left off this morning...." Meg slowly pulled away. "Ben, this isn't easy to say. What happened between us last night was wonderful but it wasn't real." "Meg, what are you talking about? Of course it was real." "No, it wasn't. I was scared and needed to forget that terrible night with Philip and you did that but it's over now."
Ben reached for Meg's hand and led her to the bed. "Meg, this is crazy. You told me no one ever made you feel the way I did. God knows that no woman has ever touched my heart the way you have. Just let me remind you of that feeling." Before he could kiss her, she pulled away again saying, "No, this is wrong. I'm sorry, I don't mean to hurt you. I have to go, Jonathan is waiting." Meg stood, picked up her suitcase and headed out of the bedroom into the hallway.
Before she reached the top of the stairs, Ben grabbed her arm turning her around to face him. "What the hell are you talking about? Just let me call Jonathan and explain what happened and that we love each other." Meg jerked her arm away saying, "No, you can't say anything to him or anyone else. It would ruin everything." "Meg, what do you mean by that?" "Ben, can't you just let this go? We gave each other what we needed last night but it's over." With that she turned, ran down the stairs and handed Dennis her luggage. For a few seconds Ben stood unable to move as if paralyzed by her words. By the time he ran into the courtyard, all he saw was the limousine's taillights as it slowly disappeared down the long drive. Within minutes, Ben packed his black Jaguar and headed for the city.
Meg spent the drive back to the city flashing back to the memory of her time with Ben. It was hard to believe what had happened and she was growing more uneasy thinking that Ben might reveal their secret. All of a sudden the car stopped. "Mr. Evans is waiting for you inside Ms. Cummings", Dennis said as he opened her door and walked her to the entrance of De Bears.
When she walked through the front doors, she was greeted by a young woman, handsomely dressed in conservative dark blue dress with a single strand of pearls around her neck. "May I help you?" "Yes, I'm Meg Cummings I was suppose to meet Mr. Jonathan Evans here at 2pm." "He's with Mr. Jensen, please come with me." Meg followed her past the magnificent rows of jewelry toward a small display case at the back of the store. She wondered what could be so important that she had to meet him here.
As she approached, Jonathan's back was to her. He was talking with a distinguished looking gray hair gentleman in his early sixties. "Excuse me Mr. Jensen, Mr. Evans, Ms. Cummings is here." Jonathan turned and embraced her. "Meg, I'm so sorry that I cut your vacation short but I need your help one last time and I couldn't ask anyone else." "That's no problem, I knew it had to be important, otherwise you wouldn't have asked."
He turned back toward the jewelry case and introduced her to Lars Jensen. Then explained that he needed her assistance in selecting an engagement ring for Susan. Lars pulled back the black velvet cloth revealing five of the most exquisite diamond rings that she had ever seen. "Oh Jonathan, I'm sure Ms. Brooks would love any one of these."
Mr. Jensen picked up a four and half carrot round blue white diamond and handed it to Meg saying, "This is the one that Mr. Evans selected". "Oh Jonathan, it's beautiful. She'll love it." "Okay Lars, I'll take it. Now about that other item." With that Lars excused himself and disappeared into the back room.
"Meg, thanks for doing this, it's been a long time since I proposed to anyone and I want it to be perfect." She smiled saying, "Jonathan, she loves you and she will love the ring, trust me". Before he could respond Lars returned carrying a dark black velvet box and handed it to Jonathan. "This is for you Meg. It's a small token of my appreciation for everything you've done for me and Susan during these past months."
She opened the box and gasped at the diamond necklace and matching earrings inside. "Jonathan I can't accept this." "Don't be silly, I want you to have it, besides it will go perfect with the dress that I sent to your place earlier today and I hope you will wear them both to the party tomorrow night."
Meg closed the box and threw her arms around his neck. "Jonathan, I would love to wear them to the party." "Wait, you have no idea what the dress looks like, so if you decide to wear something else I won't be offended." She kissed him on the lips before responding. "I'm sure the dress is perfect. Thank you." "Lars, thank you again for all of your help", he said shaking his hand. Jonathan picked up both gift wrapped packages and handed Meg the one containing the necklace and earrings.
It was almost 9pm when Ben stepped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around his waist and started to shave. "Why won't she return any of my phone calls? And why would she leave me to meet with Jonathan, nothing could be that important. I've got to talk to her and find out what is really going on", he thought. When he entered the bedroom, he was shocked to see Cassie sitting on the edge of his bed. "What the hell are you doing here?" She walked toward him, and placed her hands on his hips, then slowly moved them up his stomach to his chest. "I've missed you and I just stopped by to see how you were. I tried calling for days but you haven't been around and I was worried." "Well, there's no need to be, I'm just fine and I'm late so if you'll excuse me. I also don't appreciate you showing up whenever you fell like it. Please don't do it again."
Just then one of the servants, Thomas, knocked on the door. "Excuse me Mr. Evans, a messenger just delivered this a few minutes ago." He handed Ben the overnight envelope and left. Before he could open it, Cassie asked if she could make a phone call before leaving. "Go right ahead" he said as he tore open the overnight letter package. Cassie stood near the bed table and dialed the bogus number as she watched Ben open the package. After a few seconds of thumbing through the contents, Ben dropped it on the coffee table, poured a drink and downed it in one swallow. "Ben, is there something wrong?"
When he poured another drink and didn't respond, Cassie picked up the photographs. They were pictures of Jonathan and Meg at the Penthouse and the Jewelers, most of that showed them in what appeared to be a number of different romantic embraces. Cassie sat beside Ben and placed her hand on the side of Ben's face saying, "I'm so sorry. I know you're care about Meg. Maybe this is not what it seems". "Well according to the reports, Jonathan purchased an engagement ring this morning which is why he needed to see Meg. I have to talk to her." "Do you think she will tell you the truth? I mean it seems as though she has kept so much from you already." Ben pulled away saying, "I don't want to discuss this with you." "Ben, I know it's over between us but I still don't want to see anyone hurt you." He poured another drink and downed it before responding. "Cassie, I can't help the way I feel and I'm sorry if this hurts you but I'm in love Meg. There has to be an explanation and I'm sure she will clear all this up when I see her." Ben downed yet another scotch saying, "I think you should leave Cassie. I need to be alone." When she left, Ben walked into his closet, selected his shirt and slacks, then dressed. "I'm going to get to the bottom of this tonight. How could Meg do this after we spent the night together?"
Within the hour he was at Meg's anxiously waiting for the elevator to reach her condo. As he stepped into the foyer, the unit was dark with the exception of the light from the fireplace and some candles in the living area.
"Meg? Are you here?" "Ben? What are you doing here, I was expecting Tracy." "I ran into Tracy in the lobby and told her that I needed to speak to you privately, so she sent me up." Meg tightened the belt of her robe and walked toward the sofa saying, "Ben, we have nothing to talk about. I told you that I made a mistake leading you on and I'm sorry".
"Is that what you call what happened between us? A mistake?" Meg became concerned with the tone in his voice. She had never heard it before. She moved toward him saying, "Why are you here?"
Before responding, he walked to the portable bar and poured a scotch. After taking a few sips he threw the photos of her and Jonathan at the Jewelry store onto the bar. Meg moved to his side and leafed through the pictures. She was shocked to see that there were photos of her and Jonathan at De Beers and others of her leaving his Penthouse.
"I thought you said you had a meeting with Jonathan? Since when has my father started holding meetings in Jewelry stores? You left me at the Winery for this?" "Where did you get these?", she asked. "That's not important just tell me the truth, is that an engagement ring that Jonathan bought?" Meg turned away from Ben saying, "You should discuss this with your father." He grabbed her arm saying, "I'm asking you". Meg looked back at the photos. "Ben, you're hurting me." He released her arm pleading, "Just tell me, is that an engagement ring?" "Yes, yes it is. Are you having me followed?" "It doesn't matter where they came from, what matters is, are they true?" Meg did not respond, she turned and stared through the French Doors leading to the roof top garden. "I'm not on trial here and if you want answers, you will have to talk to Jonathan."
Ben continued drinking more heavily as he listened to her vague response and grew more frustrated. "What kind of game are you playing Meg? First you ask me to make love to you and then you run off to be with Jonathan. Why? Is it because he's wealthier?" "How could you say that?" "Because I thought we had something special and I believed you when you said Jonathan wanted you to attend a meeting. But now I find out that you lied to me. It also explains why you didn't want to me to tell Jonathan about us. You didn't want me to ruin your little arrangement."
"I think you should leave", Meg said as she turned and headed toward the bedroom. Ben slammed his glass on the bar, ran up behind her and grabbed her arm, forcing her to turn back to him. "Don't walk away from me." Meg was growing more concerned seeing the coldness in his eyes. "Let go of me Ben, you're drunk and you're scaring me." "No, not this time. I want answers and I'm not leaving until I get them."
Ben scooped her into his arms and carried her into the bedroom. When he reached the side of her bed, he laid her down and straddled her waist, pinning her arms above her head. "Ben, stop it you're hurting me. Let go of me." Instead he tightened his grip. "Why? I thought you wanted me, isn't that what you said last night?"
Even though he was angry, Ben couldn't resist his desire for her. The consumed liquor was clouding his judgement to the point where all he could feel was the passion rising within. Suddenly, he leaned down inches from her mouth saying, "I just want it to be like it was last night. Please let me love you". Before she could respond he covered her mouth with his, kissing her hard as he could. Meg forced her mouth away from his and stopped struggling. "What are you going to do Ben? Rape me. Just like Philip did." Her words were sobering, cutting him to the bone like a knife.
He quickly moved off her and sat on the edge of the bed, watching as she shifted to a sitting position and pulled her robe closed. Ben could see the fear in her eyes and couldn't believe what he had done. "Meg, I'm sorry. I am so sorry, I don't know what came over me." She just sat silent, wiping the tears that were running uncontrollably down her cheeks. "Please tell me that you forgive me." Meg turned toward him and stared into his eyes. They were usually so lovingly expressive, reflecting her very soul, but now they were only clouded by tears. "I'm very tired and I want you to leave". "I can't. I love you Meg and I frightened you which is not what I wanted."
Ben stood and moved toward her, but stopped when he saw her crawl closer to the headboard, looking like a frightened child. "God, what have I done?", he said running his hands through his thick black hair and staring at her realizing he was only making things worse by trying to make her understand that it was all a terrible mistake.
"Meg, please try to forgive me. I should never have come here tonight and done what I did. There's no excuse but I promise I will make it up to you, if you'll let me." Meg struggled through the tears to respond. "All I want is for you is to leave." "Baby, I can't. I love you and I'm so scared that I've ruined everything." She sat silent refusing to answer. "I don't want to leave you like this but I will if that's what you want." "I do." Ben stood and started to leave but turned back saying, "I realize you need some time alone. I'll leave but we need to talk about this when you're ready. Good night."
With that he entered the elevator and disappeared. Meg stood, walked into the bedroom, stripped off the robe and stepped into the hot shower. "How could I've let this happen again? I tried so hard to stay away from Ben and as soon as I let down my guard he acts just like Philip. Why do I keep picking the wrong men?"
It was noon when she arrived at Jonathan's. "Ms. Cummings, please come in. Is Mr. Evans expecting you?", asked Harrison. "Uh, no he's not but I was wondering if he had a few moments, it's very important." Before he could respond Jonathan came from his study. "Meg, I always have time for you. Mrs. Landsbury just made me some fresh tea, please join me." He watched as she sat in the chair across from his desk and nervously played with the straps of her briefcase. As he handed her the tea, he asked, "So tell me what can I do to put a smile on that beautiful face". "Jonathan, something has happened and I felt you should know about it." He sat without saying a word and listened to her explain that she had become involved with Ben at the Winery and when she met Jonathan in the city yesterday someone took pictures of them. Meg opened her briefcase and laid the envelope of photos and reports on his desk. She went on to say that the photos had been sent to Ben and now he thinks that the engagement ring was for her. "I'm so sorry. I didn't deny it, so I'm afraid I've made things worse. He's very hurt and he thinks I was just playing with his feelings." "Meg, are you in love with Ben?" "Yes, but after last night I know it could never work. I didn't want to get involved with him but something happened at the Winery. Now, he thinks that I have been using him. Jonathan, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt Ben or you."
Jonathan moved toward her and sat on the edge of his desk. "Meg, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault, I should have told Ben about Susan long before now." "Please don't apologize, it's over between us. I really came here to speak to you about my job. Now that the Merger is official, I would like to leave as soon as possible. I can't see Ben every day with the way things are now. " He leaned down and took her hands in his. "There's more to this decision than just the fact that you started a relationship with Ben at the Winery. Meg, what did Ben do to you?" "It's not Ben, it's me. I need to leave and I wanted to tell you in person." "Meg, you're not the one who is going to leave. I warned Ben not to ever do anything to hurt you or I would throw him out of this company." "Jonathan, please don't do that. I would rather be the one to leave, I just want to start over. Please."
He crossed his arms and released a deep sigh. "After everything you've done for this company and me, the least I can do is let you go. However, instead of leaving us completely I'd like to offer you an alternative. Even though the Merger is official on paper, there is still a lot to do in order to ensure a smooth transition for both companies. I was planning on offering you the position as our liaison at Dynacorp. You're interaction with Ben will be minimal at worst. Are you interested?" "I'm not sure. Can I have some time to think about it?" He laughed and walked back to his chair behind the desk. "Sure, but I want to make the announcement this evening. Is that enough time?"
Meg smiled nodding and stood to leave." "Before you go there is something you should know." Meg watched as he retrieved a folder from the top desk drawer and withdrew its contents. "These photos were sent to me last night and I wanted to make sure that you heard it from me before anyone else", he said as he handed her the pictures. "Oh my God, these are photographs of Ben and me at your winery and the cottage. So you knew all about us?" "Actually I didn't, not until I received this package last night, anonymously of course. It appears that someone has been working overtime to destroy any relationship that you had with either of us. I'm afraid that you've been the target all along. And before you ask, Susan knows all about this and she's very concerned."
"This is so embarrassing, how could anyone do this? Jonathan, I am so sorry about all of this. I didn't want to get involved with Ben, it just happened. I fell in love with him, but it was wrong. I know that now." Meg just stood shaking her head as she leafed through the pictures. "Do you know who sent these?" Jonathan took the photos from her, returned them to the desk drawer and then walked her to the front door saying, "I do now but don't worry I'll take care of it from here. So go home, relax and think about my job offer. Oh, one more thing, Susan is expecting you to accept the job. But there's no pressure, really". He winked as he reminded her that Dennis would pick her up at eight and kissed her good bye.
It was almost eight when Meg heard the intercom buzzer. "Dennis?" "Yes, Miss." "I'll be down in a few minutes." As they pulled in front of the mansion on Russian Hill, there was a long line of limousines waiting to off-load the special guests. When she stepped out of the car, she heard a familiar voice to her right. "What timing Meg."
"Jason, Alexis you look wonderful." "Thank you Meg so do you." Jason offered them each an arm as he escorted them into the foyer toward Jonathan and Susan. "Well, Jason I should have guessed that you would find a way to escort two of the most beautiful women tonight", he said winking at Meg and Alexis. "Now take these ladies inside and make sure they enjoy themselves.
As they joined the main party, the head of the Hospital Board dragged Alexis away leaving Jason with the opportunity to speak to Meg privately. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine, why?" "Well, Ben called me a number of times today asking if I had spoken to you and if you were alright. Is there something you want to tell me?" She didn't have to say a word, he knew that look. It meant she was not ready to talk about whatever was bothering her. He just slid his arm around her waist and gave her a gentle squeeze. "Okay, I'll drop it. How about some champagne?" "I'd love some." Just as Jason handed her a glass, he leaned in and whispered, "Don't look now but Ben just came in with Cassie. But don't worry, he's moving to the other side of the room. He saw you but it appears that he is going to stay clear for the moment." Just as she was about to respond, Alexis rejoined them. "Hey you two, have you tried the Hors D'ouvres? Jonathan throws the most amazing parties." "You're right Alexis he is something special, isn't he?", responded Meg.
Ben stood there barely listening to Cassie's ceaseless chatter as he watched Meg. To him she was the most beautiful woman at the party. She was wearing a green satin oriental strapless gown, cut just above her cleavage. Her hair was pulled away from her face and held in a twist by two oriental combs. Adorning her neck and ear lobes were the diamond necklace and earrings that were in the photos that were sent to Ben.
It was obvious to Cassie that his attention was elsewhere and she was growing tired of this obsession. "That's quite a necklace that Meg is wearing, isn't it? Jonathan is certainly a very generous man. I wonder when he's planning on giving her that incredible ring."
Ben couldn't even find it in himself to be jealous knowing that if she were his, he would lavish her with all the jewels he could afford. "I'm sorry, I know you still care for her but it hurts me to see the way you were treated." "Cassie, leave it alone. This is none of your concern", he said as he reached for another glass of champagne.
Before she could respond, a servant interrupted saying, "Excuse me Mr. Evans, your father would like to see you and Ms. Andrews in the library." He nodded and led Cassie down the hallway. Before they reached the entrance she leaned close and whispered, "I'm still surprised that Jonathan asked you to escort me here tonight." "So am I, but he must have a good reason."
As they entered the room, Jonathan and Meg were standing by the mahogany fireplace. "You wanted to see us?" "Yes, I do." Ben could tell from his tone that something was very wrong. "Please everyone have a seat, this won't take long. Meg sat on a chair closest to the Fireplace never looking at Ben or Cassie. "Ben, I understand that you received some pictures and reports regarding my meeting with Meg yesterday. In fact she gave me the copy that you left at her condo last night." Ben nervously adjusted his tie saying, "Yes, I did and I need to apologize for that. Meg, I need to speak to you privately. Please." "That will have to wait because I also received a package of photos, except they were of you and Meg at the winery." Ben stood directly behind Meg's chair and leaned against the fireplace. Shaking his head in disbelief, he replied, "What are you talking about? What photos?" "I'm saying that someone has been extremely interested in our relationship with Meg. But before I get into that in more detail, Meg doesn't need to be here."
Jonathan walked over to Meg, placed a soft kiss on her cheek and led her to the door. As soon as she disappeared, he turned his attention back to Ben and Cassie. "There is one person that had something to gain from all of this. Isn't that right Cassie?" She stood and moved toward Ben. "I don't have any idea of what you're talking about." Jonathan moved toward his desk and withdrew an envelope and threw it on his desk. "Cassie, did you really think that I wouldn't find out who hired Ray Starling?" "What are you talking about? Ben hired him, I didn't." Ben thought for a second and shook his head saying, "Wait, how did you know I hired Ray?"
Before she could respond, Jonathan interrupted. "Oh she knows more than you realize. In fact she's been the brains behind this little plot. Well, maybe that's an over statement. She certainly had an agenda and that was to make Meg's life as miserable as possible."
"Dad, what are you talking about? Cassie knew nothing of my relationship with Meg." Cassie moved closer to Ben and placed her hands on his arm. "Jonathan, I don't know why you are saying any of these things. I would never do anything to hurt Ben. I love him."
Jonathan flashed an angry smile saying, "Please don't insult my intelligence with your lies. When my lawyers spoke to your Mr. Starling, they explained that if he was not completely forthcoming, his license would be pulled and I would ruin his reputation. Believe me he was more than willing to discuss how you hired him after Ben did, in an attempt to destroy Meg's reputation with Ben and myself". Cassie tightened her grip on Ben's arm saying, "I was only trying to protect Ben and I was right. She tried to use you both. First she embarrassed your family with that exposé in the Chronicle, then she chased after your son. Why else would she leave Ben's bed to accept an engagement ring from you?" Jonathan stared at Cassie for a few seconds before responding. "First of all Meg means a great deal to me and I definitely have no intention of discussing the details of our relationship with you. Now, I think you should leave before I have you thrown out. And you should count your blessings that I'm not having you prosecuted."
"Ben are you going to let him speak to me like that?" He couldn't find the words to defend her, not knowing what to believe. All of this was so confusing and worse if it was true, he had lost the only woman he loved because he allowed himself to be manipulated by Cassie.
Jonathan walked toward Cassie. "I'm trying very hard to control my anger, so I would suggest that you leave before I make the presentation this evening. By the way I need to make something very clear, if you ever bother Meg again I will make sure that you never get another major modeling contract. Now if you will excuse us, I need to speak to my son. Privately! Cassie picked up her purse and touched Ben's arm. "Call me later. I need to explain what happened." Ben jerked his arm away saying, "I don't want to hear anything you have to say. I can't believe you did this to me. Just leave before I say something I'll regret". "Everything that I did was to protect you from being hurt." When she closed the door behind her, Jonathan turned toward Ben for his final assault.
"I'm not going to say much more, but I want you to know that if it weren't for Meg, I would have thrown you out of the company tonight. Instead she asked me to make other arrangements. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have thought twice. Now, I have an announcement to make and I think you should stay until I make it. There is something you need to hear." Jonathan started to leave but stopped and turned back. "I really feel sorry for you Ben. Meg is the best thing that ever happened to you and you didn't even know it when you had her heart." His words hurt more than Jonathan knew. He had lost the most important person in his life all because he didn't believe in her.
As Ben entered the main room, Jonathan was just starting his presentation. "Ladies and Gentleman may I have your attention. I promise it will take only a few minutes then I will let you get back to the party. First of all I would like to ask Meg Cummings to join Susan and I." Jonathan took her hand and smiled. "Susan Brooks and I would like to thank Meg for all that she's done during the past six months. I realize that much has been written about my relationship with Meg, and I'd like to say that most of it is true." Ben stood in the back of the room thinking that she deserves someone better than him, someone who believed in her no matter what.
Jonathan looked at Meg for a minute and then continued. "You all know that Meg has been my right hand throughout this merger but what you don't know is that she was and is much more than that to me and to Susan." He reached for Susan's hand. "You all know Ms. Susan Brooks, the CEO of Dynacorp. Ms. Brooks and I would like to take a few minutes to tell you how important Meg has been to us during these past months."
"What few of you know is that Meg has performed outstandingly during this Merger, professionally and personally. She even sacrificed her reputation to help protect a very special relationship. So before I explain the reason for this celebration, I want to announce that Meg Cummings is the new liaison for Evans Communications with Dynacorp. She will be moving to their headquarters effective immediately. Even though I will miss her terribly, I know she will continue to be a tremendous asset during this Merger." As the room applauded, Meg smiled and left their side.
Jonathan whispered into Susan's ear and then continued. "Now I'd like to tell you all what has been really been going on these past months. In order to ensure that the Merger was successful, it was necessary to keep the personal relationship between Ms. Brooks and myself a secret. Meg Cummings was instrumental in accomplishing that objective. Now that the Merger is official, I would like to announce that Susan and I are engaged to be married." The room erupted in applause as Ben gasped in shock. "Oh my God, how could I've ever doubted her", he thought. His eyes frantically searched the room for Meg. "I need to find her and explain."
Suddenly he spotted Jason and Alexis. "Excuse me but I need to speak to you for a minute it's very important." He pulled Jason aside and asked if he had seen Meg. Reluctantly, he admitted that Dennis had driven Meg home immediately after the announcement. "Ben, I don't know what's really going on and she wouldn't tell me but I think you should leave her alone for a while." "I can't do that Jason. I love her and I need to make her understand that. Trust me I won't hurt her." Ben patted him on the back and left.

This Chapter picks up at Meg's Condo after Ben learns that Jonathan and Susan are engaged and that he was wrong about Meg's relationship with his father.
Chapter 8 - Regrets
Twenty minutes after leaving Jonathan and Susan's engagement party Ben was at Meg's condo ringing the intercom buzzer. "Meg, I know you're home, please let me in. We need to talk." There was no response. "I'm not leaving until I have my say." A few more seconds passed before the elevator doors opened. When he stepped off into her foyer, Meg was curled up on the couch. The only light in the unit came from the nearby fire. She was wearing a dark blue silk robe and holding a glass of wine. "Meg, I'm sorry to insist on seeing you but this is extremely important and I think you know that." She just sat staring into the fire without responding.
"I know now that I was terribly wrong about you and Jonathan and I'm so sorry." She sat without saying a word. "Meg, please talk to me." She placed her wine on the coffee table, folded her arms and looked at him before answering. "There's nothing left to say. You know the truth now and it doesn't change anything." Ben sat next to her on the sofa and pulled her arms apart, searching for her hands. "How can you say that? Everything has changed. I love you Meg and I know I hurt you badly but please give me another chance to make it up to you." She pulled her hand away saying, "There's nothing you can do, it's over."
"How can you do this to us, we have something most people never find in a lifetime and now we can be together." Meg stared deep into his eyes for a few moments before responding. "I didn't do this to us, Ben. You did that when you came here the other night drunk and decided to believe those pictures and reports, instead of trusting me." "Meg, I uh...." Before he could finish she stood, walked away from the sofa, turned and leaned against the mantel of the fireplace.
"Ben, I'm going to try and explain this only once and then I want you to leave. I understand that you didn't know all the facts and I'm sorry I wasn't able to be completely honest with you but I made promises to Jonathan and Susan before you and I ever got involved." "I know that but...." Meg held up her hand to stop him from interrupting. "Please let me finish. I didn't want to get involved with anyone but you persisted and before I knew what was happening I feel in love. But I also told you what happened with Philip and I thought you really understood that I would never allow anyone to ever treat me like that again." "Meg, I'm so sorry for what I did the other night."
"Ben, please let me finish. I know you feel bad about what happened but I made a promise to myself that no one would ever hurt me the way Philip did. So regardless of what there was between us, it's not enough to get past what you did to me last night. Now, I really want you to leave." Ben moved close and placed her face in his hands. "I can't leave, not like this. I love you and if I could undo what happened I would. Please don't give up on us now." He leaned down and softly kissed her lips. As the kiss deepened, Meg pulled away saying, "Ben, please don't". "Meg, don't tell me that kiss meant nothing, I know you still love me. I will do what ever I can to make this up to you. I don't care how long it takes."
She pushed his hands away. "You're not listening to me. This is over, no matter how I feel. I love and trusted you, but you hurt me last night and I can't get past that. Now, I want you to leave." Ben could see that he was only making the situation worse but he wanted desperately to make all her pain disappear. More than anything he wanted to pull her into his arms but he knew this wasn't the time. "Okay Meg, I'll go but this isn't over."
She interrupted again. "Oh yes it is and I don't want you to call or try to see me again. Now that I'm working at Dynacorp, there will be little reason for us to see each other. If you'll excuse me, I'm very tired."
Meg pressed the elevator button and watched as the doors opened. Without looking at him she said, "Good bye Ben". He stepped into the elevator. "I won't say goodbye only good night." As the doors closed, he leaned against the back wall of the elevator running his hands through his hair. "I'll give her a day to think about what I said and then I'll try to talk to her at work on Monday. There has to be a way to make this up to her and I will do what ever it takes to make that happen. God, how could I have ever hurt her the way I did?"
As Ben walked through the lobby of the Evans Corporation, he couldn't believe that it had been only a day since he saw Meg last, it felt like a week had past. He wanted to get to work early, knowing Meg was always in before most and they would have a chance to talk. As he walked toward her office, he saw her secretary. "Morning Lisa, would you please hold Meg's calls I need to speak to her and I want the privacy." "I'm sorry you can't she's...." Before she could continue, Ben entered the office and noticed that all of her personal items were missing. Lisa came rushing in behind him saying, "Mr. Evans, I was trying to tell you that she's not here". "What the hell is going on here? Where is she?" "I'm sorry Mr. Evans I'm wasn't being clear. Ms. Cummings is gone. She came in yesterday and packed her things. The movers just left a few minutes ago, they're on their way to her new office across town at Dynacorp." Ben's heart sank hearing the news. Without saying a word he turned and walked down the hallway to his office.
It was almost 11am when the meeting ended. Meg had been introduced to the executives that she would be working with over the next few months. As she walked toward her new office, Meg couldn't help but feel grateful to Susan and Jonathan for making the arrangements for her new job so quickly.
There was no way she could have continued working that closely with Ben after everything that happened. When she approached her office, her new secretary Joanne, told her there was very handsome gentleman waiting for her. All of a sudden she felt her heart begin to pound nervously and at the same time hoping that it was Ben behind the door.
When she entered the room the first thing she saw was a vase with a dozen red roses on her desk. As she walked toward the flowers and took in their fragrance, she heard a voice from behind her. "I'm glad you like them." She spun around smiling but when she saw him, her expression quickly changed.
"Jason, are these from you?" "He walked over to her and placed a kiss on her cheek saying, "You were expecting someone else?" Meg smiled and placed a light tap on his arm. "No of course not. I just wasn't expecting anyone. I love the roses. Thank you." Jason picked up her purse and handed it to her. "Come on we're expected for lunch in the private dinning room with Jonathan and Susan. Tell me have you seen or heard from Ben?"
"No, why do you ask?" "Well, he was pretty anxious to talk to you after Jonathan's announcement." Meg closed the door behind them saying, "He stopped by my condo later that night. I told him it was over." Jason pressed the button for the elevator. "I assume he didn't take it well." "Why do you say that?" "Well, I saw him this morning and he was quite upset but refused to talk about it. He didn't look as though he had gotten much sleep since the party. I've never seen him like that before. I'm convinced he really loves you Meg." "Jason, I know you mean well but I can't talk about this right now. Do me a favor though? Please keep an eye on him and make sure he's okay." "Now that request sounds like it's not really over." "Jason, it is over but I want Ben to be happy, even if it's not with me." As they walked into the private dinning room Meg asked if they could change the subject. Jason nodded in agreement before joining Susan and Jonathan at the table.
It had been almost a month since she left Evans Communications and this was to be first meeting with their executives. She was scheduled to give a presentation regarding the strategy for the various system mergers and she was to say the least, nervous. Primarily because it would be the first time that she would see Ben since the night of the party.
When she entered the conference room, Jonathan gently pulled her aside. "Good Morning Meg, I think everyone is here so let's begin." Meg looked around the room and noticed that Ben wasn't in attendance. "Don't we need to wait for Ben?" Jonathan pulled out her chair saying, "Ben won't be here, he's working out of the London office for the time being". "Jonathan, did you send him there because of me?" He pushed her chair underneath her and sat down to her right. "Not at all, it was completely his idea. He left the week after my engagement party. He said he needed some time away and wanted to give you some space. Let's get this meeting started or we'll never get out of here." With that he called the meeting to order. As Jonathan started the introductions, Meg couldn't understand why Ben's absence was so disturbing, she should have been relieved, but she wasn't. Suddenly, Meg heard Jonathan's introduction causing her to shift focus.
At the end of the meeting, Meg was packing her briefcase when Mike Winters approached. "Meg, it's been a long day how about joining me for dinner? I was just going to grab a bite down at the wharf." "Well, I was planning to just go home and fix a salad but I would love to join you. Let me go home and change. Why don't you pick me up around six?" He agreed and walked her to the limousine that was waiting for them.
During the next month Ben continued calling and emailing Meg weekly trying desperately to get her to forgive him. Each attempt was either completely ignored or dismissed by her insisting that nothing could be done to change her decision.
It was almost 4pm when Joanne buzzed Meg announcing that Mr. Evans had arrived. "Please show him in and I won't be needing you anymore tonight so I'll see you tomorrow." Before he entered, Meg walked to the serving bar and poured a glass of Spring Water. When she heard the door open, she asked, "Jonathan, would you like something to drink?" "Yes, Bourbon, no ice." After handing him the drink she walked behind her desk as Jonathan sat in the chair opposite hers. "Well, this must be important for you to come across town to see me." "Ah Meg, you can read me like a book", he said laughing. "I wanted to tell you in person that I've asked Ben to come back to the States to help some of the home office personnel develop the plan for his proposed expansion to France. It should only take about a month and I'd like you to work with him and Jason. Before you say anything, I'm already aware of the fact that Ben has been trying to contact you since he left the States and that you've refused to speak to him." "Then you know my working with him couldn't possibly work." "Meg, please just hear me out. I'm not here to interfere with your private life and I made it clear to Ben that working with you was not an open invitation to resolve any problems between you two. The fact is that I need you both on this and I made him promise that this project was the only thing I expected him to address while he's here." Meg took a sip of her drink before responding. "Jonathan, I know you wouldn't ask me to do this if it weren't important. All I can promise is that I will try, that's the least I can do after everything you've done for me. So yes, I'll take the assignment as long as Susan agrees." "Well, that was easier than I expected and Susan already agreed. I've made arrangements for you to have your old office and I'd like you to start this coming Monday, if that gives you enough time to make the necessary arrangements. I'll see you then. Night Meg", he said and left.
Monday morning Meg and Jason entered the conference room to find Ben and a number of Evans executives reviewing reports. They all looked up when they heard them enter. "Jason, Meg it's good to see you." As Jason shook his hand, Meg moved to the table and sat down. "Well, now that we're all here, let's get started", Ben said as he sat back down at the opposite end of the table from Meg. For the next six hours, breaking only an hour for lunch, they reviewed Ben's initial plan for the expansion and discussed the affects on the London office staff.
"I think that's enough for the first day. So if there are no objections, I'll see you all back here tomorrow morning at 9am", Ben said then escorted his secretary Anna out of the conference room. Jason leaned over and patted Meg's shoulder saying, "That went well for the first meeting. What do you think?" "To tell you the truth I'm relieved and a bit surprised. I guess I was afraid Ben was going to make a scene." "Don't get angry but that tone sounds as though you're a bit disappointed." She smiled and shook her head. "No, just a little surprised. Now, lets change the subject. How about coming over to my place for dinner." Jason squeezed her waist saying, "I'd love to but Alexis and I have plans." "You two have certainly been seeing a lot of each other lately. I'm so glad you've met someone so special, Steve's friend Matt say she's a wonderful Doctor. I just didn't realize you were getting so serious." "Meg, don't take this the wrong way but ever since Ben left for London, you haven't been really interested in anything but work." She smiled, dropped her briefcase on a nearby chair and hugged him. "I'm sorry I've been so wrapped up in my problems but I promise that's over." "Okay, I forgive you so how about joining Alexis and me for dinner tonight?" "I'd love to and if you don't mind I'll invite Mark Winters along. He's been after me for a few weeks to have dinner with him again so maybe it's time I joined the land of the living", she laughed. "Sounds great, now let's get out of here."
For the next four weeks, Ben was true to his word and kept all his contact with Meg strictly professional. The night he was scheduled to return to London, Jason and Meg were enjoying a quite dinner at her Condo when the buzzer sounded. "I wonder who that can be, I'll be right back." When she pressed the Intercom and asked she heard Ben's voice saying, "Meg, I'd like to speak to you for a few minutes". She looked at Jason and then pressed the access key for the elevator.
As Ben walked into the Foyer he saw Meg and Jason standing in the living room near the portable bar. "I'm sorry for not calling first but I was hoping we could talk before I left for the airport." "Ben, I don't think that's a good idea besides I have company." Before he could respond, Jason interrupted saying, "Meg, I think you two should talk. I'll take my drink to the garden so you can have some privacy".
After Jason left the room, Meg sat on the sofa saying, "Okay, Ben what is so important that you think I want to hear". He looked at her for a few seconds then took a seat on the love seat opposite her. "I know that you are still upset with me and may not be in love with me anymore but I need to tell you how I feel before I leave. I've tried a number of times to apologize for the night I came here drunk and angry when I thought you had left my bed for Jonathan's." "Ben, I don't want to hear this." "Please, if you just let me tell you what's in my heart I'll leave and never bother you again, if that's what you decide." "Okay Ben, let's get this over with."
"No matter what your reasons were for not telling me the truth about Jonathan, I had no right to come here and frighten you the way I did. I love you Meg, more than anyone I've ever known and I'm so sorry for coming here drunk and angry. If I could take it back I would but I can't." "Ben, I'm sure you're sorry and if that's all, I think you should leave." He stood and started to head toward the elevator but stopped and turned back to her. "No, that's not all. I love you Meg and there won't be a day that will go by that I won't think of you or know that you gave up on something most people never find in a lifetime. There's one more thing I need to say before I leave. I don't have to be reminded of what I did to you that night but maybe you do." Meg shook her head in disbelief saying, "What are you talking about? I remember everything that happened". "Really? In addition to my being very upset, do you also remember that I left as soon as I realized that I had frightened you? You say you can't forgive me for that indiscretion but are you sure you're not punishing me for what Philip did?" "How dare you ask me that? This has nothing to do with Philip." "I'm sorry Meg but I don't believe that. For the first time since that night I'm starting to think that this has everything to do with Philip. You couldn't punish him for what he did but you could punish me. Well, I'm not interested in paying for anyone's mistakes other than my own so maybe you're right, it is too late for us." Ben glanced at his watch saying, "Speaking of late, I should go before I miss my flight. Good bye Meg, I really do hope you find the love you deserve."
"Ben, wait! There's something you should know. I'm involved with someone. It's Mike Winters from Dynacorp, and it's serious." For a few seconds he remained silent then responded. "Oh, I didn't know. Are you happy?" "Yes, very. So now you know why it would be best if you stopped calling and emailing me." "You're right Meg, maybe it's time for both of us to move on. I, uh, I won't bother you anymore. Good-bye Meg."
He turned back toward the elevator and stepped inside. Just as the doors were about to close he blocked it with his hands saying, "I do love you Meg and always will". Releasing the doors, he disappeared as Jason came into the living room. "I guess you heard all of that", she asked. "Well, it was hard not to. Are you okay?" "I'm not sure. I can't believe he felt he had to come here and say those things." Jason deliberately did not respond, instead walked to the bar and poured a drink. "Well, don't you agree?" "Actually, no I don't." "What? You can't be serious." "I'm very serious Meg and before you get mad at me I think I should leave." Meg stood and walked toward him saying, "Jason, please don't go until you explain what you meant by that". "Okay Meg but you're not going to like it. You know that I love you like a sister and that I've always supported everything you've done but I can't this time. I don't know what happened the night Ben came here but I can't believe that he would ever hurt you the way I assume Philip did." Before he could continue Meg interrupted. "He didn't but he knew what Philip did to me and yet he still came here drunk and angry."
"I'm not trying to justify Ben's actions but if I loved someone who was keeping secrets, regardless of the reason, I can't say that I wouldn't have made the same assumptions that Ben did. I also think you're making Ben pay for what Philip did to you and I'm really afraid that someday you're going to regret that decision more than you know. I've said more than enough so I think it would be a good idea if I say good night." Jason pulled her into his arms and kissed her on the lips. "I love you, you know that. Why don't you get some sleep." Meg smiled and watched as he entered the elevator and waved good bye.
Over the next few weeks, Mike and Meg became even closer. It wasn't an all consuming feeling of passionate love but it was a relationship she felt she needed, one that wasn't as intense as it had been with Ben. She even started to think that maybe this was the kind of love that she needed all along, safe and uncomplicated.
Two months had past since Ben had returned to London and even though Tracy kept insisting that she give Ben another chance, Meg was more convinced with each passing day that she made the right decision before he left. It was almost 7pm when Jonathan walked into her office. "Hi Meg, I'm glad I caught you before you left for the weekend." "Jonathan, what a surprise." She stood, walked into his open arms and placed a kiss on his cheek. "Well, this must be important what's going on?" He reached for her hand saying, "It is. It's about Ben." "Oh my god! Has something happened to Ben?"
"No, he's fine. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you. There's just something you should know and I wanted you to hear it from me before anyone else. Ben's married." Meg blinked and shook her head in disbelief. "Married? To whom?" "Her name is Kiko Koyama. Believe it or not Cassie introduced them at a Fashion Premier Party in London over a month ago. They were married yesterday in her home town of Kagoshima, Japan." "Wow, that's quite sudden, isn't it?" Jonathan smiled and reached for her hand. "I thought so too but he says he's happy. Are you okay?" Meg walked to a nearby chair and sat down. "It's just such a surprise." "You're still in love with him aren't you?" "Yes, but I'm the one that pushed him away and I still think it was the right decision." Jonathan leaned down and kissed her on the cheek saying, "Well, I'm sorry things worked out this way for you and Ben. I also didn't want you to read about it in tomorrow's society section." "Thank you Jonathan." "Well, it's late and I should let you get home to your young man." Meg stood and walked to the office window. "Actually, he's away on business. But to be perfectly honest I'd rather be alone." "Well, if you change your mind and just want someone to talk to, call me." He moved behind her, placed his hands on her shoulders and kissed her cheek. "Good night Meg."
Less than an hour later Meg walked dazed into her Condo and dropped her briefcase on the sofa before heading into the bedroom. As she stripped off her clothes, she tried desperately not to think about Ben for fear that she would lose control. Within seconds of stepping under the streaming hot water, the images of Ben at the Cottage and her Condo flooded her mind, along with Jonathan's announcement of his marriage. Before she realized it, she was sliding down the wall of wet tiles, pulling her knees to her chin and crying uncontrollably. The sound of the shower and her crying drowned out Steve's call to her from the living area.
When he didn't receive a response, he entered the bedroom and heard Meg's cries coming from the bathroom. Through the closed shower door he could see the outline of her form curled at the back of the tub. "Meg, are you okay?" She struggled to speak but couldn't stop crying. Concerned when she didn't respond, Steve grabbed the oversized towel from the rack, opened the shower door and turned off the water. He immediately moved toward Meg and wrapped her in the towel before pulling her to her feet. "Meg, I'm here. Come with me, I'll take care of you", Steve said leading her to the bedroom and urging her to sit on the bed. After drying her off, he pulled back the comforter and urged her to lay down saying, "Just relax while I get you some tea". Within minutes Steve returned with a cup of herbal tea and insisted Meg drink it completely before they talk.
After finishing the tea, she placed the cup on the nightstand and thanked Steve for trying to help. "Meg, please tell me why you're so upset. Is this about Mike?" "No, it's Ben. He's, he's married." Steve reached for her hand saying, "Meg, what are you talking about?" "Jonathan stopped by tonight before I left work and told me that Ben married some Japanese model he met at a Fashion Party." "Oh my god, I can't believe that. I mean Tracy told me that he was dating someone and it appeared serious but married?" Meg pulled her hand away saying, "You knew he was involved with her?" "Meg, I'm sorry I didn't say anything but every time Tracy or I tried to discuss Ben, you made it very clear that you were not interested in talking about him to anyone." "Steve, I'm sorry for getting upset. It's just that this news is such a shock." "I know Meg." "Does Tracy know Kiko?" "Yes, she said she's one of Asia's Super Models and quite nice, believe it or not Cassie introduced them. But Kiko is nothing at all like Cassie. I still can't believe that he married her. I mean I never thought he would give up on you." Meg pulled a tissue from the tableside box saying, "The last time I saw him I told him that I was involved with Mike and I insisted that he let me move on. I guess he finally decided it was time to find a life without me". Before Steve could respond, Meg broke into tears. He wrapped his arms around her saying, "I'm so sorry Meg, I know how much you love Ben and this must be so hard. Is there anything I can do?" "No, thank you Steve. I think the best thing for me right now is to try and get some sleep. I'll see you tomorrow." "Okay, but call me if you need anything or just need to talk. Good night hon." After Steve left Meg turned off the light, pulled the comforter to her chin and closed her eyes. Exhausted from crying she fell asleep within minutes.
Three weeks later on the morning of Jonathan and Susan's wedding, Jason, Alexis and Mike entered the foyer of the Evans Mansion along with a number of other guests. Before they reached the ballroom, Meg came down the hallway toward them. "Meg, you look beautiful." "Thank you Mike, you look pretty handsome yourself. I just came down to check on things so I'll see you all after the service." She kissed him and hurried down the hallway. Before reaching the stairway, Mrs. Landsbury stopped her saying that Ben wished to speak to her in the Study. As she entered the room and saw Ben standing near the French Doors to the terrace, she could feel her heart pounding so hard that it felt as if it could burst out of her chest. She took a deep breath before speaking. "Ben, you wanted to speak to me?" He turned slowly saying, "Meg, it's good to see you. You look wonderful. I know it's getting late but I thought we should speak before the service, especially considering we're in the wedding party."
"If this is about your marriage, I know all about it. Jonathan told me as soon as he heard." "I asked him to tell you, I thought it would be best if you heard it from him." "Ben, I don't think this is the time nor the place for this." "Meg, I didn't ask you here to rehash the past or discuss my marriage. I only wanted to make it easier for both of us. This is Jonathan and Susan's day and I don't want anything to ruin it for them." Meg smiled saying, "You're right Ben, that's the least we can do." She turned to leave but stopped and faced him as she opened the door of the Study. "By the way Ben, congratulations on your marriage. I hope you'll be very happy." As she closed the door behind her, he ran his hand through his thick black hair saying, "Thank you Meg".
A half hour later Ben and Jonathan stood at the make shift altar looking at the ballroom entrance as Meg approached wearing a pale blue off the shoulder low cut satin gown with a fitted waist flattering her slender form. Ben smiled as he watched her move to the opposite side of the altar, then looked over at Kiko, who was sitting in the front row, and winked. Meg glanced over at the beautiful Japanese woman in her mid twenties with long black hair and wearing a forest green silk cocktail length dress. Suddenly, the wedding march played and Susan appeared wearing a Vera Wang pearl colored off the shoulder satin gown with an embroidered bodice. Around her neck was a simple strand of pearls, a wedding gift from Jonathan and her hair was slightly pulled away from her face by two pearl studded combs.
During the service, Meg found it hard not to look at Ben and wonder how things might have been different but quickly turned her attention back to the service, trying to ignore her regrets. The ceremony was beautifully simplistic. At the opposite end of the altar, Ben stared at his father and couldn't help but think that he had not seen him this happy since his mother was alive. He was so thrilled that Susan had come into his life. At first, he didn't understand why Jonathan had kept his relationship with Susan a secret but he had to admit that before knowing Meg, his reaction to the news might not have been as positive. He would never have understood what love was and how hard someone would fight to hold on to that type of feeling. Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by the Reverend's presentation of the new Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Evans.
As the wedding party and guests headed into the garden for the reception, Ben walked over to Kiko and slid his arm around her waist. "I want to introduce you to some people." He led her to where Meg was chatting with Mike, Jason and Alexis. "Excuse me all, I wanted to introduce you to my wife, Kiko." After exchanging greetings, Meg said, "It's a pleasure to meet you". "Thank you Meg, Ben's told me a great deal about you and how close you are to his family." Meg smiled as she watched Ben introduce Kiko to the others in the group. It was hard not to be envious of the way Ben lavished her with attention. She hadn't seen him this happy or content since their time at the Cottage. "Jason, I was hoping that you would take care of my wife until I make my toast." "I'd be happy to", he said as he and Alexis led her toward their table. Mike leaned over and kissed Meg on the cheek saying, "I'll see you later".
After everyone had been seated, Ben stood and started his toast. "Excuse me Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to say a few words to the happy couple. When I heard about my father and Susan's relationship, I was shocked to say the least. Not because I didn't approve, on the contrary. At the time I just could never see him with anyone other than my mother. That is, not until I opened my eyes to how much in love Jonathan and Susan were and how right they are for each other. I would like to wish them a lifetime of happiness and love that will only grow stronger with each day of their new life together. Please raise your glass and join me in a toast to Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Evans." The crowd stood, raised their glass and simultaneously responded, "To Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Evans".
Following the first dance for the new couple, Ben decided to cut in on his father and Susan. "Excuse me Dad but I'd like to dance with my step-mother." As they changed partners, Jonathan leaned down and placed a soft kiss on Kiko's cheek. "I'm glad you're here to share this day with us and I hope you will consider this your home." "Thank you Jonathan, that means a great deal to me." When Ben returned to dance with Kiko, Meg couldn't resist watching as he held her close and whispered to her causing her to smile and nuzzle his neck. Before she realized it, Mike had moved behind her and slid his hands around her waist. "Are you okay?" "I'm fine why?" "Meg, you haven't been able to take your eyes off Ben and Kiko all day. I know this must be hard so don't try to deny it." She turned to face him saying, "I admit I was shocked by the news but he seems happy and that's all I ever wanted for him. Now, can I please have that dance you promised?" "I was hoping you would ask me", he said leading her to the dance floor.
It was almost four in the afternoon when Jonathan and Susan left for their honeymoon and most of the guests were heading toward their limousines. Kiko leaned her back against Ben's chest and sighed. "It was such a wonderful day, Jonathan and Susan are so happy." "They sure are, and so am I", he said tightening his arms around her waist and kissing her neck. "It's been a long day and we have an early flight tomorrow so how about we turn in?" Kiko smiled and followed him upstairs to their room. By the time she finished her shower Ben had already left the bathroom.
After pulling her nightgown on she entered the bedroom and found him standing by the portable bar pouring Champagne. He looked so handsome standing in the light of the fire, dressed in a dark green silk robe. As he turned to hand her a glass, Kiko walked into his open arms and hugged him, then placed a soft kiss on his lips. "Mm, what's that for?" She took the glass of champagne, reached for his hand and led him to the edge of the bed saying, "Oh, I just can't believe how lucky I am that you fell in love with me". "Kiko, we're both lucky. I love you very much." Before she could respond, he covered her mouth with his, then used his tongue to trace her lips. Kiko slowly pulled away. "Ben, can I ask you something?" "You can ask me anything." "It's about Meg. She's very beautiful and I was wondering what happened between you two." Instead of responding, Ben took another sip of Champagne. "Ben, when we first met you told me you were in love only once before. It was with Meg, wasn't it?" "Yes, yes it was but I made some mistakes that we couldn't get past so it ended. I didn't think I would ever fall in love again, that is not until I met you."
He kissed her again this time as he laid her on the bed. "What happened with Meg is in the past. I love you Kiko, you're my wife and that's all that matters." He stood, stripped away his robe and moved over her, kissing her more passionately with each pass of his mouth. Hours later, they fell into an exhausted sleep in each other's arms.

This Chapter picks up after Jonathan and Susan leave for their honeymoon and Ben and Kiko return to Europe.
Chapter 9 - Heartache
It was the second week of their honeymoon, Jonathan and Susan were in Paris having dinner when Ben and Kiko entered the restaurant. "I don't believe this", Jonathan said to Susan. "Dad, Susan what are you two doing here? I thought you were still in Scotland?" They stood and exchanged greetings. "Well, we just flew in this morning. This is such a nice surprise", Jonathan said. "It sure is. Kiko had a photo shoot in the city so I thought I'd join her for a few days. So tell me, how was St. Andrews? Did you get to see Tiger Woods play?" "We sure did, it was the best British Open that I've ever seen." Susan leaned over to Kiko saying, "It's a good thing I love golf". "Well, so do I. It's the one sport in Japan that is very popular. My father is dying to see Tiger play." "Well, maybe we can all get a round of golf in before we go back to the States." "Dad, you don't have to ask me twice." For the next three hours they enjoyed their meal before returning to their hotels.
At their Four Seasons suite, Jonathan poured the Champagne as Susan slipped into the sexy white negligee, that he had bought for her at one of the nearby exclusive Montaigne shops, then walked out onto their private balcony.
"Oh my god Susan, you look so beautiful", he said as he moved behind her, closed an arm around her waist and handed her a glass of Champagne. Before saying a word, Susan leaned her head against his chest and sighed. "This is the most incredible city that I've ever seen. Now I know why they call it the "City of Lights"." "Well, I must admit everywhere we've visited seems even better because we're together. I love you so much Mrs. Evans." "I love you too Mr. Evans. I just wish that...." "That what?" "Don't take this the wrong way but I wish Ben was as happy." "That's funny, I was thinking the very same thing. I know he loves Kiko but I can't shake the feeling that there's a part of him that still loves Meg. I don't think he would have ever given up on her if she hadn't told him that she had become seriously involved with someone else. But that's his life and tonight I would rather concentrate on my beautiful wife." Jonathan turned her around and kissed her as passionately as he could.
"Jonathan, I love you so much. It's still so hard to believe that we're here together. I feel like I'm eighteen and in love for the first time." "I know how you feel and I'm going to spend the rest of my life showing you just how happy I am that we found each other. I love you Susan." He leaned down scooped her into his arms and laid her gently on the king-size bed. Jonathan stared into her dark green eyes for a few seconds before moving from one cheek to the other kissing her softly before covering her mouth with his. As the kiss deepened, he slid his hands under the straps of her gown and pulled them away from her shoulders until her breasts spilled out. "Jonathan, I want you so much. Promise me that we will always make time for us." "I give you my word that we are going to have an incredible life." For the next two hours they made love with more passion than ever.
It had been almost two months since Meg had been at the Mansion for Susan and Jonathan's wedding when Eleanor, Jonathan's secretary telephoned Meg and asked her to bring some papers to the house. "Good afternoon Ms. Cummings, Mr. Evans is waiting for you in the Study." "Thank you Harrison." When she entered, Jonathan was on the phone. He motioned to her to have a seat as he finished his conversation. "Meg, thanks for bringing those papers to me. I need to make some changes before I fax them to Ben in the London office." "That's no problem, is there anything else that I can do?" "Well, if you have some time I'd like you to stay for awhile so we can talk." "I'd like that." "Great, just give a minute."
Once the documents had been faxed, Jonathan led Meg into the Solarium for a late lunch. "I wish Susan could have joined us but she had some shopping to do. However, she did ask me to make sure you agree to come for dinner soon." "Oh, I'd love that but I should tell you that Mike and I aren't seeing each other any longer." "I'm sorry, I didn't know. If you don't mind my asking, did it have anything to do with Ben?" Meg took a sip of her iced tea before responding. "Why would you ask that?" Jonathan placed his napkin on the table and covered her hand with his. "Meg, I know that you're still in love with Ben. I can see the way you react every time his name is mentioned. I also knows that he has never fallen out of love with you." "Jonathan, Ben is in love with Kiko. She's his wife." "I know that but it doesn't change the fact that he loves you too." She pulled her hand away saying, "Jonathan, why are you telling me this?" "Meg, I'm not trying to upset you but I think there is something you need to know. When I saw Ben in Paris during my honeymoon he told me that he wanted his transfer to London to be permanent because of his feelings for you." "I don't know what to say." "He felt that the only way he could give Kiko the life and love that she deserved was to be far away from you. I'm sorry, I just thought you should know." "Well, he has a new life now and all I want is for him to be happy." Meg looked down at her watch saying, "I'm sorry Jonathan I really should be getting home". He stood and pulled out her chair. "Meg, thanks for listening and I hope I haven't upset you." "No, you haven't. Please tell Susan I will call her about that dinner invitation." Jonathan walked her through the Foyer and watched until Meg's cab pulled out of the courtyard.
It was almost 7pm when Jason arrived at Meg's Condo for dinner. "Hey there sweetheart, you look wonderful." "Jason, you always say that." "Well, maybe that's because it's true. Where were you this afternoon?" "Oh, I had a meeting at the Mansion with Jonathan. Well, dinner is almost ready why don't we go into the garden and have some wine?" As Jason followed Meg into the garden, he couldn't help but think something was bothering her. After pouring the wine he asked, "What's wrong Meg?" "Nothing, why do you ask?" "You look like you're a million miles away. Or maybe just a continent?" Meg took another sip of wine and sat at the table without responding.
"Jason, do you believe you can love more than once in a lifetime?" "I think if we're open to it we can. Why?" "I was thinking about Ben. I hurt him so much and I just hope his new life with Kiko is everything he deserves. He was right you know." "About what?" "About punishing him for what Philip did. I didn't realize it until he left." Jason leaned over and kissed her on the lips saying, "Well, my mother always told me that she believed we have two lives. The one we dream about and the one we learn to live with. When she first told me that I didn't understand what she meant. But now I think it means that we grow up with wonderful ideas of the life we want but sometimes we're tested and the way we deal with those challenges determines the life we have."
"Maybe you're right Jason. It's time I stop feeling sorry for the mistakes that I've made and get on with living. Enough serious talk, I'm starved. So let's eat. By the way Randy wanted me to invite you and Alexis to a party he's having at his parent's home in Carmel. They're out of town, so it should be fun." "Count us in."
Three weeks later, Meg was working late when Jason came rushing into her office breathing so hard it that he could hardly speak. "Jason, what's wrong?" "Meg, something terrible has happened", he said pouring a glass a water. "Jason, sit down and tell me what you're talking about." After downing the water, he sat down, took a deep breath and released it. "Jonathan tried to call you but you were still in your meeting so he asked me to tell you personally." "Jason, you're scaring me. Please just say it." "It's about Ben's wife Kiko." "What about her?" "She was flying to Indonesia for a Sports Illustrated layout when her plane went down over the Indian Ocean. So far there have been no survivors." "Oh my god, where's Ben?" "He's on his way to Indonesia to help with the search." Before Meg could respond, she broke into tears. Jason threw his arms around her and pulled her close to his chest. "I need to go to the Mansion and see if there is anything I can do for Susan and Jonathan. Do you want me to drop you at your Condo first?" Wiping the tears away, Meg took a deep breath saying, "No, I'm going with you." When they entered the elevator, she leaned against the back wall saying, "Ben must be going crazy."
A half-hour later, Meg and Jason were ushered into the living area where Jonathan, Susan and family friends were consoling one another. "Meg, Jason, I'm so glad you're here. Although I wish it were under different circumstances." Meg hugged Jonathan saying, "Jonathan, I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do?" "Just being here with us is enough." "How's Ben?" "It's hard to say. I only spoke to him once after he learned that the plane crashed. The last thing I heard he was flying to the crash site to help in the search attempt. Susan and I are flying out tonight to join him. I'm not sure how long we'll be gone so I would like you and Jason to take on some additional duties while we're away." "Jonathan, we would be more than willing to do whatever we can. Don't worry about anything at work, we won't let you down." Jonathan hugged her saying, "I know we could count on you. Thanks Meg. I'll make the necessary arrangements with Eleanor." "Please tell Ben, he's in our prayers and that we love him." With that Meg and Jason said their good byes and left.
When Jonathan and Susan arrived at the Four Seasons hotel in Indonesia, John Carson the head of security for the Evans London office greeted them. "Mr. Evans, how was your flight?" "Long. How's Ben? Has there been any news about Kiko?" "I'm afraid it doesn't look as though Mrs. Evans, or anyone else, survived the crash but Ben is still refusing to accept it."
"Are you sure, Kiko is dead?" "All I can tell you is that the area where her plane went down is pretty deep and the wreckage is spread out along a five-mile radius, which is making the recovery more difficult. There are also some small islands in the area that are being searched. So far only a few bodies have been retrieved from the main body of the plane but I'm afraid your daughter-in-law is not one of them." "Where's my son?" "He's in the lounge." Jonathan patted John on the shoulder and thanked him for all his help, then headed for the bar with Susan.
Entering the lounge, they stood in the entranceway for a few seconds looking around the room for Ben. Susan tugged on his arm and pointed saying, "Jonathan, he's over there at the corner table. God, he looks exhausted." Ben was sitting alone, oblivious to anyone else in the room. He was unshaved, his clothes looked as though he had slept in them and he was downing a drink. Before they reached the table, Ben ordered another double scotch from the passing waitress. "Ben?" They stood staring at him waiting for a response before sitting down. "Ben are you alright?" Slowly, he raised his head and tried to focus through his alcohol clouded eyes. "Dad?" "Yes son, it's me and Susan", he said as they sat down.
"Are you okay Son?" Ben snickered, "Okay? Yeah, I'm just great. Let's see my wife's missing and all the money in the world won't keep them searching for her through the night." Susan moved her chair close to his, placed her arms around him and hugged him tight saying, "Ben, I'm so sorry, please let us help". After a few seconds he pulled away struggling to speak as the tears streamed down his face. "I don't think there is much you can do." Jonathan put his arm on Ben's shoulder saying, "Well, maybe not but at least we can be here for you. Why don't we go into the restaurant and get some dinner. I bet you haven't eaten much lately." "I'm not hungry." "Ben, you may not want to eat but you need to keep up your strength if you want to help in the search. So why don't you go to your room, take a shower and change. We'll meet you in the dinning room." Reluctantly Ben nodded, stood and wobbled out of the bar. "God Jonathan, do you think he's going to be okay?" "I'm not sure but we're not leaving until he is. Let's go to the restaurant."
Less than an hour later Ben appeared in the restaurant, cleanly shaved and a bit more sober. "Susan, I want to apologize for earlier." She stood and hugged him saying, "That's not necessary. Are you okay?" "Let's just say I'm a little better." "Good, have a seat, we were just about to order." "Dad, I appreciate what you're trying to do but I don't think I could eat."
"Ben, if you expect to join the search party in the morning you're going to need your strength. So please try and eat something." When the waiter approached, Jonathan ordered for all three of them. "Would you like anything to drink?", asked the waiter. "Just coffee please."
After dinner, Jonathan and Susan escorted Ben to his room and told him they would join him in the morning for the search. It was almost 7am, when they met the search team in the lobby. "Good morning John, are we ready to go?" "Yes, I think we're all here. We got a break in the weather last evening, so the divers were able to work through the night and I'm waiting to...." John was interrupted by his ringing cell phone. "John Carson", he said and then listened to the caller as the others stood by anxiously waiting. John hung up the phone saying, "Great news, two woman were located on a remote island. Apparently they were able to get to a raft before the tail section of the plane went down." "Is it Kiko?" "Ben, I don't know. We need to get down to the dock, the rescue boat is bringing them in."
When they arrived at the dock, the recovery boat was pulling up along side. From what they could tell, there were five bodies on deck, along with two woman wrapped in blankets, one dark hair and the other blonde. "Oh my God that's Kiko", Ben yelled as he ran to the docking boat and jumped aboard. The women on board didn't hear his approach before he grabbed the dark hair woman and spun her around. "Kiko, I knew you were alive. I just...." Ben's jaw dropped when he saw that the young woman wasn't Kiko. She stared into his dark blue eyes for a few seconds before responding. "I'm sorry, I didn't see Kiko after the plane went down", she said in a raspy dry voice. Jonathan and Susan's hearts ached as they watched Ben jump onto the dock and walk back toward them.
They all stood silent as the divers lifted each body bag off the boat and loaded them onto the waiting gurneys. Without a word everyone watched as Ben walked toward each bag, unzipping and inspecting the left hand in a ritualistic manner. When he opened the fourth bag and reached in for the occupant's left hand his fears were brutally confirmed. His matching wedding band was on her swollen ring finger. Ben brought her hand to his lips and kissed her ring as he fell to his knees crying.
Jonathan and Susan stood frozen as they heard Ben scream, "No Kiko, no!" Susan was the first to move behind him, placing her hands on his arms in an attempt to comfort him. "Ben, I'm so sorry." Before she could say anything else, the ambulance attendants approached the gurney and attempted to move Kiko's body to the ambulance. "Don't touch her!", Ben yelled throwing his arms over her lifeless form. Susan grabbed his arm saying, "Ben, please, you need to let them take care of Kiko now". "I can't leave her, she needs me!" Jonathan stepped between Ben and Kiko's gurney. "She needs to go with them Ben." Reluctantly, he stood back and watched her body being loaded into the waiting ambulance then fell into Jonathan's arms weeping like a small child. "It's okay Ben, let it out. I know exactly how you feel." Suddenly, Ben pulled away. "You have no idea what I'm feeling", he shouted then ran to his car and drove back toward the hotel.
An hour later after Jonathan finished talking to the search team, Susan slid her arm around his waist saying, "Baby, I'm really concerned about Ben. Maybe we should call Doctor Martin and ask him what we should do". "You might be right, why don't we first go back to the hotel and make sure he's okay."
When they entered their hotel suite, the telephone message light was blinking. "Let me check who called, then we'll go see how Ben is doing." After dialing the operator, he listened to the recorded message and hung up the phone. "Susan, he's gone." "What are you talking about?" "That was the desk Manager, Ben left a message saying that he was taking Kiko's body back to her parents in Japan and would call us when he got back to London." "I don't understand. Why wouldn't he want us to go with him?" "Ben's never been comfortable sharing grief. When Fiona was dying of breast cancer he never left her side but after she past away, he retreated to the cottage at the Winery for over a week." Susan placed her arms around his waist saying, "Isn't there anything we can do for him?" "I'm afraid not. The best thing we can do is give him the time and space he needs to grieve. Why don't you pack our things while I make arrangements for a flight home." Susan kissed him on the lips before heading into the bedroom to retrieve their suitcases.
It took Jonathan almost a month after Kiko's death to convince Ben to transfer back to the San Francisco home office so he could be closer to his family. Even though Ben agreed and moved back into the Mansion, he was rarely home. He was deliberately spending most of his time at the office trying to lose himself in work. Although that concerned Jonathan and Susan, Ben's drinking was even more disturbing, not to mention his renewed relationship with Cassie Andrews, Kiko's so called best friend.
The night of Jonathan's Fund Raiser for Breast Cancer, being held at the Mansion, Meg was in her bedroom getting dressed when Tracy called to her from the living area. "I'm in the bedroom, come on in." When she entered, Meg was stepping into a beautiful black strapless gown. "Well, you look wonderful. Do you have an escort?" "Actually, I do. His name is Jim Henderson, he's an architect from LA." "Really? When did you have the time to meet him, you're always working", she laughed. "Very funny. Steve introduced us a few weeks ago. He's designing the expansion offices in Merrill Lynch's downtown offices and is really very nice, not to mention quite good looking. We only went out once before tonight but I'm looking forward to seeing him again." "Great, it's about time you got back to dating." Meg shook her head saying, "What are you talking about?" "Meg, you know exactly what I mean. After you stopped seeing Mike and learned about Ben's marriage, you spent months alone. Speaking of Ben, have you seen him since Kiko's death?" "No, Jason and Jonathan say he's taking her death pretty hard but he's not alone, Cassie is taking care of him so I'm sure it will just take time." "Well, I'm just glad you're starting to see someone again. That's all." Meg placed the last diamond stud into her ear and then hugged Tracy saying, "I love that you care but please don't worry about me so much. Okay?" "If you say so." Suddenly the intercom buzzer sounded. "Meg, its Jim." "I'll be down in a second." She walked Tracy to the elevator and headed toward the lobby.
An hour later at the Mansion, Meg and Jim had just joined Jason and Alexis when Susan approached. "Excuse me everyone, may I please speak to Meg for a few minutes?" They all nodded as Meg turned and followed Susan down the hallway to the Study. "I'm so sorry to take you away from the party but I promise this won't take long." When they entered the room, Jonathan was sitting behind his desk thumbing through some papers. "Meg, it's great to see you. What's it been? Three weeks?" "Actually, I'm not sure." Well, it's been too long. But that's not why I asked you here. This has to do with Ben." "Is he okay?" Jonathan moved from behind his desk and toward Meg saying, "He's not hurt if that's what you were thinking but he does need our help. Meg, Ben doesn't appear to be getting past Kiko's death and something has to be done before we lose him completely." "Jonathan, I care a great deal for Ben, you know that but I don't think that I'm the right person to help. Besides he's not alone he has Cassie. Maybe he just needs more time to grieve." Susan moved to Meg's side and sat down. "First of all Cassie has her own agenda and she is definitely not what he needs. We know what we're asking is not easy but nothing we've tried has seemed to help Ben out of the depression that he's lost in." "Well, what can I do?" Jonathan and Susan smiled. "I'd like you to come back to Evans Communications and work directly with Ben on his latest project as his assistant. He needs the help and I think he needs a friend. "A real friend."
"You know I will do whatever I can to help but are you sure this is the best approach?" Jonathan patted her hand saying, "Believe me I wouldn't ask you if we didn't feel this was the only way to help Ben get through this difficult time. There's only more thing. Please don't say anything until I have a chance to tell Ben about this arrangement. I plan on telling him Monday morning when we move you into your old office." Meg nodded and left the Study with a sense that she was about to enter a relationship that she was not prepared for and yet she knew she had to risk it for Ben's sake.
Before rejoining the party, Meg felt the need to be alone for a few minutes. She accepted a glass of Champagne from a passing waiter and headed for the terrace. As she leaned against the stone wall, she took a deep breath thinking that it was too lovely of a day to be worried about the future. Suddenly she heard, "Feels like Deja 'Vue". The voice was so familiar, soft, velvety and seductive. Turning toward the house she saw Ben standing in the doorway to the Library.
He was dressed in a Tuxedo holding a drink in one hand as the other rested in his pants pocket, looking more tired than she had ever seen him. "You're right, it does feel very familiar. It's good to see you Ben. I was so sorry to hear about Kiko." "Thank you. I meant to call and thank you for the thoughtful note that you sent me after her death. It meant a great deal." "If there's anything I can do please just...." Before she could finish, Zeus ran up from the garden and nuzzled her hand. Meg placed her glass on the terrace wall, knelt down and playfully rubbed his ears saying, "Zeus, it's been a long time. I've missed you too". Ben smiled as he watched their reunion. "Well, it appears that's what he's been waiting for." Meg turned toward Ben saying, "What do you mean?" "Since I've been back, Zeus has been moping around this place and until now I wasn't sure why." Meg stood, patted Zeus on the head and laughed. "Oh, I doubt it's because of me but it is great to see him." Almost as if in a trance, Ben moved toward Meg causing her to step back and take a deep breath. Using the back of his hand, he softly stroked the side of her face and whispered, "You're even more beautiful than ever". As he continued to get lost in the feel of her soft skin, Meg couldn't help but notice that his eyes were clouded. Gone were the deep blue sparkling pools that she remembered. It wasn't the same man she met almost a year ago on the balcony of The Mark's Imperial suite. Suddenly, another familiar voice interrupted her thoughts. "Well, there you are", Cassie said as she moved to Ben's side and slid her arm around his waist. "Meg, it's been a long time. Doesn't Ben look great?" She struggled to smile saying, "He always does. Well, if you'll excuse me, I should get back to my date and friends". When she left, Cassie turned to Ben and placed a kiss on his lips. "Are you okay?" "Sure, why would you ask?" "Oh, I was just concerned that seeing Meg might have upset you." Ben finished his drink then said, "Seeing Meg could never make me unhappy".
Hours later after most party guests had departed, Cassie found Ben sitting with Zeus in the Library. "Ben, does that animal have to be in the house?" He patted the top of Zeus's head saying, "He's part of the family, so you better get use to it". "Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I don't care for animals, it's just that I'm not use to being around them. Well, it's late, why don't we go up to your room." Ben stood and walked toward Cassie, then placed a kiss on her cheek. "I appreciate the fact that you have been such a great friend these past weeks but I need some time to myself. Dennis will take you home." "Are you sure you don't want me to stay? You look like you could use some company." Ben gave her a soft squeeze saying, "No, I really want to be alone. Good night".
It was almost 9am Monday morning when Caroline knocked and entered Ben's office. "Mr. Evans, your father called to remind me that he's expecting you in the private dinning room for a breakfast meeting." "Oh, I almost forgot, thank you. If anyone calls, please tell them that I won't be able to respond until this afternoon."
As he entered the private dinning room, Ben saw Jonathan sitting at the table with a dark hair woman. He knew immediately who she was. "Meg, what are you doing here?" "I asked her to join us. Please have a seat, we have a lot to discuss." "Ben, I've given this a great deal of thought and made some decisions regarding the French expansion project that you're heading up. I've decided to assign Meg as your assistant. She was an incredible asset to me during the merger with Dynacorp and I know she can be the same for you." Meg waited to see what Ben's response would be before saying anything. "Please don't take this the wrong way but I think it might be better if we don't work together." She couldn't believe what she was hearing but still decided not to respond to his comments. Ben turned toward Meg saying, "I'm not saying this to hurt you Meg. No one is more aware than I am of what you did for this company during the merger, not to mention for my father and Susan but I think it would be best if I hire my own assistant." Jonathan wiped his mouth with the napkin, placed it on the table and said, "Sorry Ben, this is my decision, not yours. I've already made arrangements to move Meg into her old office and a memo is being released this afternoon announcing her new position. Now, if you'll excuse me I have another meeting." Jonathan stood and leaned down placing a kiss on Meg's cheek saying, "Call me if you need anything. I'll see you both later. Oh Meg, don't forget Susan and I are expecting you for dinner tomorrow night".
After Jonathan left the dinning room Ben turned to Meg saying, "Well, it's clear how my father feels but what do you think?" "I think the job sounds exciting but if you're asking me if I can work with you I'd have to say yes. So I guess it's up to you if you want me on this project." Ben smiled saying, "No, I'm afraid Jonathan made that decision but I promise not to make the working arrangements uncomfortable." Meg stood, placed the napkin on her plate and said, "I'm sure I will be fine, so maybe I should go my office and get started".
For the next five weeks Ben and Meg worked closely together without incident. Meg always had enjoyed working with Ben but lately he was a very different man from the one she had known. His attitude toward her was completely professional. The only person outside of work that he was spending any time with was Cassie. Many thought his need for her companionship had grown out of his loss of Kiko but Meg couldn't shake the feeling that Cassie was deliberately keeping Ben isolated in order to remain his closest confidant. Most evenings she arrived at this office around 7pm to drag him away for dinner before he had a chance to make other plans.
Three days before Susan's 50th birthday party, Cassie telephoned Ben to tell him that she was leaving town for a week for an unexpected Photo shoot. "I really hate to do this especially since you'll have to go to Susan's party alone." "Cassie, I will hardly be alone, my father has invited over forty of their closest friends to the Winery for the weekend. So have a good time and I'll see you when you get back." "I will and I'll call you when I get in and let you know where I'll be staying." "Great, have a safe flight. Goodbye."
After hanging up the phone, he felt as though all the blood in his head had drained out. He stood, walked over to the office bar, poured a drink and downed it in one swallow. As he ran his hands through his thick black hair, Meg entered the office unnoticed. She called to him but he just stood there without reacting. "Ben? Is something wrong?" Before responding he poured another drink, then walked to the sitting area and sat on the sofa. "I'm fine." Meg sat beside him saying, "No, you're not fine. You're white as a ghost. Please, talk to me. I care a great deal and I want to help." Ben looked into her eyes for a second and smiled. "I appreciate that Meg but....." "But, what? Ben, I know we aren't as close as we once were but I really am a friend and friends help each other." "Okay Meg. It's Cassie." "Oh my God has something happened to her?" "No, she's fine. She called before you came in to tell me she was leaving town for another photo shoot."
Before continuing he swallowed his entire drink and poured another. "Maybe you could take a few days off and go with her. I can handle things here." He shook his head saying, "It's not that. Before I hung up I told her to have a safe flight, which are exactly the last words I said to Kiko." Meg slid closer to him and wrapped her arms around him saying, "Oh Ben, I'm so sorry. I know you loved Kiko very much. I wish there was something I could do to ease your pain." Ben patted her on the back and then pulled slowly out of her embrace. "I did love Kiko but there's more to it than that and I can't talk about it, especially not to you." "Ben, there is nothing you can tell me that I wouldn't understand." He ran his hand through his hair saying, "It's not about Kiko, it's about you". "Me?" Ben put his drink on the coffee table and turned toward Meg, then softly stroked her face with the back of his hand. It was the first time in months that his eyes were filled with emotion, not dark and empty. "Ben, I don't understand what you mean. Please talk to me." "I'm not sure you're going to want to hear what I have to say." "I promise not to get upset with whatever it is." He continued softly rubbing his hand up and down the side of her face while staring deep into her blue eyes. "You are so beautiful", he said almost as if he had lost his previous train of thought. "Ben, what's this all about?" He moved away from her and poured another drink before responding. "The week before Kiko died, she insisted that we separate for a while." "Ben, I'm sorry I didn't know. Now I understand why this has been so difficult for you." "No, I'm afraid you couldn't possibly." "Ben, all couples have issues and some times a brief separation helps to remind them of how they really feel." "You don't understand, Kiko didn't want time alone, she thought it was what I needed." Meg stood, walked to the bar and poured a glass of wine saying, "Why would she think you needed the separation?" He moved close behind her and said, "Because she knew that I was still in love with you".
Without realizing it the glass slipped out of Meg's hand sending it crashing to the floor. Ben grabbed her hands as she reached down to pick up the pieces. "Meg, don't! You'll cut yourself. Maintenance will clean it up. Come with me", he said as he led her back to the sofa. After they were reseated, Ben rubbed his thumb against the back of her hand saying, "The day she left, I told her that I didn't want a separation and that I would never act on my love for you. I know this is a shock and I was never planning on telling anyone, especially you. But when I spoke to Cassie tonight, it all came flooding back. I would have never told you if I hadn't been drinking so heavily and if you hadn't been here this evening." "Ben, I don't know what to say."
"There's nothing to say and there's nothing anyone can do to change the fact that I would never have been able to love Kiko the way she deserved to be loved." "Ben, don't even think that. You don't know what kind of life you two could have had." "And now I'll never know." Meg cupped his face in her hands saying, "Ben listen to me, please. Kiko knew all about our relationship before you two got married and it didn't stop her from marrying you. Even though she may have suggested a brief separation, doesn't mean she didn't know that you loved her very much. I also think she would hate to see what you're doing to yourself." Ben pulled away and poured another drink. "Ben, that's not going to help." "Meg, I know you mean well and I'm sorry I dumped all this on you but I think it would be better if you went home." "You shouldn't be alone tonight." "You're wrong, I shouldn't be around anyone, most of all you. Please go home." "I'll go but if you need to talk, please call me anytime." After she left, Ben threw his glass against the office door in frustration yelling, "Damn it Meg, why did it have to turn out this way."
The morning of Susan's party, Meg was one of the first guests to arrive at the Winery. Jonathan and Susan were by the pool chatting with some friends when she came around the side of the house. "Meg, we're so glad you could make it", Jonathan said as he hugged her. "I wouldn't have missed it for anything, besides I found the perfect gift for you Susan." "Meg, you didn't have to get me anything, we just wanted you to celebrate it with us." "Well, I'm happy to be here." "Oh Meg, I almost forgot Jake told me that Apache was dying to see you, so why don't you go for a ride before lunch." "That sounds wonderful. I'll go change and see you both later." Jonathan and Susan smiled as they watched her run toward the house. "You always seem to know how to put a smile on her face", Susan said squeezing his waist with her hand.
By the time Meg reached the Stables, Jake had already saddled Apache. "It's great to see you again Miss. Apache has missed your visits." "Hi Jake, I've missed you both too. I thought I would take him to his favorite spot." "He'll love it." Meg smiled, mounted Apache and galloped off. As she road toward the clearing, she resisted the temptation to change direction and ride to the Cottage. "I wish there was something I could do to help Ben but maybe he's right, it's probably best if I stay away from him. I have to stop thinking about him", she thought as she dismounted, spread the blanket and lay on her back letting the sun warm her body as Apache grazed nearby.
Two hours later when she returned to the stables, the party was in full swing. She entered the house through the kitchen entrance and headed to her room to shower and change. When she arrived at the pool, Ben was at the bar ordering a drink and talking to Jonathan. Suddenly, Susan came up behind her saying, "I wish there was something we could do to help Ben move on with his life. He seems so lost without Kiko but I can't shake the feeling that there is more going on with him. Do you know what it could be?" "No, I'm afraid not. All I know is that he's terribly unhappy." Susan reached for her hand saying, "Let's go join them".
"Ben, I'm glad you decided to come. We haven't seen much of you lately and Meg says you've been working too hard", Susan said as she hugged him and kissed his cheek. "Happy Birthday Susan. You look wonderful." "Well, you have your father to thank for that. He takes great care of me. I couldn't be happier." "I'm glad, you deserve to be and so does my father." Jonathan pulled Susan to his chest and kissed her as Ben and Meg looked on smiling. "Well, maybe we should leave these two love birds alone. Meg, would you like to get something to eat?" "I'd love to, the buffet looks wonderful and I worked up an appetite after my ride."
As they moved along the buffet line, Ben said, "So you and Apache got reacquainted already?" She laughed saying, "Yes, we went to his favorite spot." "Really, did you go for a swim?" "Not this time but I was tempted. Maybe tomorrow." For the next hour, they sat chatting about everything and anything other than about themselves. "Hey you two, this is a surprise", said Jason as he and Alexis sat down. "Meg, I thought you were going to drive up with us?" "I know, but it was such a beautiful day that I wanted to make the trip alone. Besides I wanted to get here early so I could spend time with Apache." Jason laughed shaking his head. "You and animals. I'm surprised Jonathan didn't invite Zeus." "Very funny. But I do have more luck with them than men that's for sure", she laughed as she stood up to get another glass of wine. "What did that remark mean?", asked Ben. "Oh, she broke up with Jim a few days ago and she's feeling a bit low." "I'm sorry to hear that, she deserves to find someone that can make her happy." Jason patted him on the shoulder saying, "She already did, maybe you should open your eyes to how she feels about you". "Jason, I'm the last person Meg needs. Now, if you'll excuse me I promised to call Cassie, she's out of town and expecting to hear from me. Maybe, I'll see you later." "Bye Ben."
As they watched him head for the house, Meg returned to the table. "Where's Ben off to?" "Oh, he said he had to call Cassie", responded Alexis. "Oh, so what are you two planning to do this afternoon?" "We hadn't decided." "In that case, how about we drive into town and take a look at some of those great antique shops?" "That sounds wonderful." As they stood up to leave, Jason reminded them that they had to get back in time for the birthday dinner and fireworks.
By the time they returned, the dinner buffet was being set out. "Great, we have just enough time to take a quick shower and change", Jason said as they headed to the house. Three hours later after everyone had eaten, Rosa and Pete carried Susan's birthday cake to the main table as everyone began singing Happy Birthday. It was her favorite, chocolate with strawberry filling. Ben's gift was the first opened. Susan gasped when she withdrew and read the contents of the envelope. "Oh my god Ben, this is wonderful", she said throwing her arms around his neck. "I'm glad you like it." "Okay, so is anyone going to tell me what it is", asked Jonathan. Susan laughed saying, "It's a two week Mediterranean cruise on the Sea Goddess". Jonathan shook Ben's hand saying, "Thank you son, this is very thoughtful. Susan has always wanted to take a cruise." He hugged them both and returned to the house as the other gifts were opened.
Just as the fireworks started, Meg looked around for Ben but he was no where to be found. When she saw Rosa, she pulled her aside and asked if she knew where Ben was. "He's in his room. I think he just wants to be alone." "Thanks Rosa." She turned to Jason and Alexis saying that she would be back in a few minutes.
When she reached the turret room she knocked but when there was no response she entered. With the exception of the light from the Fireworks, the room was completely dark. Ben was standing in the open doorway, watching the display. "Ben, I knocked but I guess you didn't hear me." When he didn't respond, she moved directly in front of him and watched the magnificent light display lighting up the sky. "It's beautiful. Do you mind if I join you?" He took a sip of his drink saying, "I'm not very good company. You really should go back to the party". Meg just smiled saying, "Why would I want to do that when you have the best view of the Fireworks?" Ben leaned closer and took in the intoxicating fragrance of her perfume, then whispered, "Meg, you shouldn't be here. Not now." "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude. I just thought you could use a friend." She turned to face him and placed her hands on his chest saying, "Ben, I care about you. Please let me stay". He gently pushed her away. "Meg, please just leave." "Is that what you really want?" Ben looked away and placed his drink on the nearby table not responding. "As she turned to leave, Ben grabbed her arm saying, "Wait". Without saying another word, he stared into her eyes for a few seconds before pulling her to his chest and kissing her as passionately as he could. Minutes later she broke away from his mouth saying, "Ben, I love you so much."
Hearing the words Ben abruptly pulled away. "I'm sorry Meg, I shouldn't have done that". "Ben, it's okay. I wanted you to kiss me." He leaned against the stone wall running his hands through his hair. "I'm sorry, I can't do this." Meg reached for his arm but he yanked it away saying, "I want you to leave". "I can't do that Ben, I love you." "Really? You mean until I remind you of Philip again, don't you?" She couldn't believe how cold and harsh he sounded. For a few seconds she stood unable to speak as the tears ran down her cheeks, then turned, ran out of his room and headed toward the stables. Before anyone at the party knew, Meg saddled Apache and rode off down the dark path toward the cottage.
Ben leaned against the stone wall of the turret, running his hands through his hair in frustration. "Damn it, how can I make her understand that she will only be hurt if she gets involved with me. I love her to much to ever do that again." He slid down the wall, resting on the floor saying, "Oh, Mother why couldn't you be here for me now." A half-hour later Ben rejoined the party looking for Meg hoping to apologize.
When he found Jason and Alexis, Meg was no where to be found. "Have either of you seen Meg?" "No Ben, not since dinner. Is something wrong?" "No I just wanted to talk to her." "We haven't seen her since she said she was going into the house for a few minutes just as the Fireworks started. She never came back. I assume she just turned in for the night", Alexis said. "Well, it does look as though the party is breaking up, all those not staying at the main house have already left. So I think Alexis and I will turn in too. Night Ben." "Well, I'm not very tired so I think I'll start that new book I've wanted to read. I'll see you both at breakfast. Good night."
It was almost one in the morning and with the exception of Ben pouring a drink in the living room, the entire house was quite. For the last few hours he had tried to concentrate on the book in front of him but all he could think about was Meg and how he hurt her again.
All of a sudden, Jake came running through the front door calling for help. "Rosa! Wake Mr. Evans, Meg is missing!" Ben bolted out of his chair saying, "Jake, what the hell are you talking about? Meg's upstairs asleep." Within seconds, Rosa came running from the servants quarters toward Ben saying, "What's going on? I thought Meg went to bed hours ago." Jake shook his head saying, "I'm afraid not, I saw her ride Apache toward the back section of the vineyard after the fireworks and Apache just returned to the barn, alone." Ben felt his heart sink. "Rosa, please check Meg's room."
Rosa passed Jonathan and Susan on the stairs as she ran to Meg's room. Shortly after Jason and Alexis joined the others in the living room, Rosa returned saying, "Meg's not in her room and her bed hasn't been slept in". Jonathan turned to Jake. "What the hell is going on? Where's Meg?" "I don't know Mr. Evans, Meg left after the fireworks for a late night ride. She asked me not to say anything and I was waiting up for her but about twenty minutes ago Apache returned to the barn all muddy. There was blood on his front right leg but it wasn't his. He looks as though he had taken a spill and Meg wasn't with him. I'm afraid she is in trouble."
Jonathan grabbed Jake's arm saying, "Are you telling me, that Meg is out there somewhere alone, maybe hurt or worse?" "Dad, it's not Jake's fault, we need to find Meg that's what's important." They all nodded in agreement and headed back to their rooms to change. "Jake, call Bill and tell him we'll need the chopper", Ben said reaching into the hall closet for his jacket.

This Chapter picks up after Ben and everyone learns that Meg is missing.
Chapter 10 - The Rescue
When they all assembled in the courtyard, they agreed to split into groups, each taking a section of the property. Ben volunteered to take the path leading to the cottage hoping that Meg would have gone there.
As he climbed behind the wheel of the Chevy Blazer, he couldn't stop thinking that all of this was his fault. If he hadn't been so cruel to her, maybe she wouldn't have run away. He had to find her and she had to be okay. An hour had gone by and no one had spotted Meg. It had been four hours since she had left the main house and everyone was getting very concerned when Jonathan's call came over the car radio saying that he was heading toward the south section to look for Meg.
Around 2am it was growing more cold and damp and there was still no sign of Meg when they heard the call from the chopper that they were running low on fuel and were aborting the search. Ben got on the phone yelling, "Bill, this is Ben, if you need to refuel fine, but you get what you need and get back to the search. Do I make myself clear?" "Yes sir, we'll be back as soon as possible." Jonathan heard the transmission and couldn't help but think that he was right all along about Ben's feelings for Meg. It was obvious that he was desperate to find her, and even though everyone in the search was anxious to locate Meg, no one appeared to be more concerned than Ben.
Ben was on his way back to the main house from the cottage, when he spotted Meg lying near the side of the road. He had missed her on his way to the cottage because of the angle of the road. She was only about three hundred yards from the cottage's wooden bridge. He assumed that Apache had been spooked and Meg was thrown into the thick brush, hitting her head against the nearby tree, knocking her unconscious. Ben left the truck's engine running as he ran to her. She was lifeless, her head was bleeding and her pulse was slow. He cradled her in his arms and softly kissed her lips. "Meg! It's Ben! Can you hear me? Please Meg open your eyes." He covered her mouth trying to breathe life into her body. There was still no response. He picked her up and gently placed her into the backseat of the truck, wrapping her in a blanket. Sliding behind the driver's seat, Ben picked up the car radio and reported that he had found Meg. He told Rosa to have a Doctor waiting at the house when they arrived. All the way back to the house, Ben kept one hand on the steering wheel while the other stroked Meg's arm as he talked to her in a soft voice, "Meg please hold on, we'll be home soon. Please don't leave me, I love you. I need you to know how I feel." Suddenly, Meg's arm dropped lifeless off the seat. "Oh God, not again. Not this time."
When Ben's truck pulled up in front of the main house, everyone was there. Before they could reach the vehicle, Ben had the back door open and was lifting Meg into his arms. "Ben you're exhausted please let us help you." "No! I have her. Is the Doctor here?" "Yes he's waiting in her bedroom." Without another word, he carried her to the bedroom at the top of the stairs where Rosa and the Doctor were waiting and laid her in the bed. "Ben, this is Doctor Simons." "Mr. Evans, I need to examine Ms. Cummings so if you'll excuse us we'll take care of her now. "Ben was holding her hand saying, "I'm not leaving her."
Rosa touched his arm saying, "Senor Ben, I need to clean Meg up so the Doctor can examine her. We'll take good care of her, I promise. As soon as he's done I will come and find you". "No! You don't' understand, if I leave her she'll die." "Senor Ben, she's fine, I wouldn't lie to you." Reluctantly, Ben left but stood outside her room as if he had been assigned as her personal guardian.
A half-hour later Rosa came out of Meg's room and relayed the message that Dr. Simons would meet them all in the living room in a few minutes. He had completed his exam and would explain then. Ben agreed and joined the others in the living room.
Moments later, Dr. Simons entered the living room. Ben was at the bar with Jonathan pouring themselves a drink when they heard him approach. "How bad is she?", asked Ben. "First of all Ms. Cummings will be fine. She did however suffer a concussion, some bruising and she's slightly dehydrated. I've sedated her for the night but she needs to be watched, so I need someone to stay with her during the night.
Before anyone could respond, Ben volunteered to take the first watch. "I'll make sure she has everything she needs." With that announcement he turned and headed upstairs to Meg's room.
"Ben before you go, there are a few things you should know. For the next six hours, Meg needs to be wakened every hour for a few minutes at a time. The drugs that I gave her will make her feel a bit out of it so just ignore anything she may say or do. She probably won't remember it when she wakes up tomorrow anyway. Other than that, just let her sleep. If anything else happens, call me at once. Okay?" Ben nodded in agreement and left.
There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Meg would be well taken care of for the night. They stood in silence as they watched Ben enter Meg's room and close the door behind as if he was shutting them completely out of his and Meg's private world. Alexis whispered to Jason that maybe they should call Tracy or one of her other friends to let them know what was going on. He simply, shook his head, squeezed her hand and said, "She's in good hands. I think we should get some sleep". Jason and Alexis followed the others upstairs to their rooms as Jonathan and Susan walked the Doctor to his car. "Are you sure Meg is fine?" "Jonathan, I'm positive. Right now she needs rest and I think it would be a great idea if she stayed here for a few days rather than traveling back to the city. I'll be back in the morning." "Thank you."
When he entered her bedroom Ben asked Rosa to stay with Meg until he showered and changed. Within twenty minutes he returned, said good night to Rosa and sat at Meg's bedside watching her sleep. She looked so vulnerable lying there with only the down comforter as a covering, leaving her bruised arms and shoulders exposed. He couldn't help but blame himself for her running away. "If only I hadn't been so hurtful", he thought.
Just as he started to move off the bed he felt her hand on his. "Ben?" "I'm here Meg. Get some sleep, I'll be right in the chair next to your bed all night." Again he tried to move from the bed but she tightened her grip on his hand. "Don't go, please." Ben shifted his weight, placed a hand across her body on the bed and leaned over her, softly stroking her face with his other hand.
"Meg you need your rest, you've been through a lot tonight." She looked deeply into his blue eyes saying, "I don't want to sleep, I was afraid I would never see you again and I need to tell you something." Ben placed his fingers on her mouth saying, "Shusssh, it can wait Meg, you need your rest. I couldn't bare it if anything happened to you, again. I am so sorry for making you run away. You would never have gotten hurt if it wasn't for me." She moved his hand off her mouth. "It's not your fault, it's mine. You were right about my blaming you for what Philip did. I just didn't realize it until it was too late." "Oh Meg, that's not why I got upset. It's because I love you so much and the only way to keep you from being hurt is by keeping you away from me. But that's not important right now. You need your rest, please go back to sleep."
"You still love me?" "Baby, I've never stopped loving you. I never could." Meg placed a hand on his face saying, "I've missed you so much and no matter how much I tried I never stopped loving you either. Please lay down and hold me." Ben gently pulled his hand away saying, "I don't think that's a good idea, you need your rest". She stared into his eyes and continued to plead with him. "I want you to hold me, please." "Okay Meg, just promise me that you'll go to sleep", he said as he removed his robe and reached for the comforter then slid beside her and placed an arm above her head. Before he could say anything, she moved onto his chest. As he wrapped his arms around her slender form he asked, "Is that too tight? I don't want to hurt you." She smiled and settled into his arms. "No, it's just what I need."
They lay there for a few minutes before Meg's voice broke the silence. "It feels so good to be in your arms", she said then started to softly kiss his chest. "Meg, uh, I don't think that this is a good idea", he said even though he could feel the arousal within. He watched as she moved his hand down her neck, pushing the comforter away and stopping on her breast. She squeezed his hand silently asking him to massage her. "God knows I want you but this isn't the time."
"Ben, I've missed your touch and I've missed the way you make me feel. I thought I could forget you but when you kissed me tonight in the Turret, I knew I couldn't deny my feelings anymore. When you told me to get out of your life, I couldn't bare it. That's why I ran away on Apache."
Ben placed his finger under her chin and lifted it toward his mouth saying, "I'm so sorry that I made you run away". She placed a soft kiss on his mouth as she guided his hand down to her breast again. "Ben, please don't stop. Kiss me." He couldn't resist her plea, he leaned down and softly kissed her partially opened mouth. Within seconds his tongue was circling hers as he continued to massage her breast more rapidly. He moved off her mouth placing wet kisses up and down the length of her neck, hearing her moan more loudly with each kiss.
He moved to his knees and straddled her naked form, supporting his weight by resting his arms on the bed. "I've missed you so much. Touch me." Ben abruptly broke away saying, "Meg, I shouldn't be doing this, not now. I don't want to hurt you." Meg placed her hands on his face and pulled him toward her mouth. "I'm fine and I need you, please." She guided his hand toward her aching center. Ben tried to pull his hand back but the look in her eyes told him that she was desperate to feel the release that was building. "It's been so long since I felt your touch. I need you Ben." Everything was telling him this was wrong but he couldn't resist her pleas or the arousal that was overwhelming him.
With one smooth movement he began to make love to her. "Oh God Ben, I've missed you so much." He had never wanted her more than he wanted her at this moment. "Meg, I love you." He began a slow rhythmic motion matching each of her moans until their bodies both shook in release. As they were recovering from the explosion Ben's hands slid slowly up Meg's arms toward her fingers until his locked within hers. Seconds later he rolled onto his back and pulled her gently to his chest. Within minutes they were sound asleep.
It was dawn when he woke. He could feel her soft body still lying on his chest asleep, like a light covering. How different the night had ended, he had spent months dreaming about this moment. "Before everyone gets up, I better make some breakfast for Meg, she will need to eat something when she wakes", he thought.
He slid out from under Meg's sleeping body, pulled on his silk robe, then slipped down the backstairs to the kitchen. By the time he had finished making breakfast and returned to Meg's room, Dr. Simons was sitting on the edge of the bed examining her. "Oh I'm sorry I didn't know you were here. Is everything okay?" Dr. Simons stood and placed the stethoscope into his bag. "No problem Ben, I'm just about done. Just one more question Meg. Did you have any trouble sleeping? Any headaches?"
"No, I don't think so. Actually, the last thing I remember is when you gave me that shot to help me sleep before you left last night." Ben couldn't believe what he had just heard, maybe she just didn't want anyone to know what really happened. He placed the breakfast tray on the coffee table and turned his attention back to Meg as the Doctor continued his questions. "You don't remember Ben waking you up during the night?"
She closed her eyes as if trying to search her mind for an answer. "No, nothing. The last thing I remember was you leaving last night. Why can't I remember something as simple as that?" Dr. Simons could tell she was getting upset. "Meg, don't worry about it. The drug that I gave you was very strong and it sometimes results in short term memory loss but believe me there is nothing to worry about." Ben's heart sank at the prospect that she had no memory of their time together. "Are you sure she'll be okay?" "I'm sure our patient will be just fine. But just make sure she doesn't overdue for the next few days. I think it would be a good idea if you stay here and rest." "Don't worry, I'll make sure she follows your instructions." Dr. Simons turned back to Meg saying, "You may have a slight headache for the rest of the day and feel a little woozy but keep taking the medication that I left, it should help. Well, I should go, it looks like Ben has everything under control here but call me if Meg has any problems. I'll fill Jonathan and Susan in on my way out."
Ben picked up the tray and placed it over Meg's lap. "I hope this is okay, Pete was serving breakfast on the patio so I'm afraid that it was up to me to make you something to eat." She smiled as he poured her tea. "It looks wonderful and I'm sorry for being such a burden." "Don't say that, you're not any trouble. Is there anything else that I can do?" She just shook her head. "Meg, do you remember anything about last night after Dr. Simons left?" She took a sip of tea. "No why, did something happen?" "Uh, no I just wondered if you remembered my waking you during the night."
"No, I don't recall that at all and I'm sorry that I kept you awake most of the night. Please don't tell me that I did or said something that I would be embarrassed about?", she asked smiling.
Ben stood there looking at her for a few moments before responding. "I'm just glad that you're okay. I feel so responsible for what happened." "Ben, it's not your fault, I just needed some time by myself and I should never have taken Apache out so late. I really want to see him. Are you sure he's okay?" He smiled and reassured her that Jake had checked him out thoroughly and that he was fine. "Ben if you'll excuse me, I'd like to shower and get dressed. I need to see Apache." "Meg, I don't think that's a good idea, the Doctor wanted you to rest."
Ignoring his comments, Meg held the covers to her chest as she reached for the robe lying at the foot of the bed. As Ben looked away, she dropped the comforter, pulled the robe over her shoulders and stepped out of bed saying, "What he said was that I needed to take it easy for the next few days, which is exactly what I plan on doing. I appreciate your concern Ben but I really do feel much better. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to shower and dress. I'll join you downstairs shortly and I promise to take it slow." Ben reluctantly agreed and left.
A half-hour later Meg slipped down the backstairs, grabbed some carrots from the refrigerator and headed toward the barn. Everyone was outside near the pool enjoying brunch so no one noticed that she had left the main house. Just as Susan offered to check on Meg, Rosa came rushing onto the patio, asking if anyone had seen Meg. Jonathan dropped the paper he was reading saying, "Are you telling me that Meg is missing again?" "What the hell is going on?"
Ben stood and placed his coffee on the table saying, "Don't worry, I think I know where she went". "What are you talking about? Where is she Ben?" "I think she went to see Apache, to make sure he was okay after his spill last night. I tried to tell her he was fine but she insisted that she see for herself." Just then the phone rang and Rosa answered. "Okay I will tell them, thanks Jake. Meg's in the barn with Apache. I'll go down and check on her." Ben turned toward the barn saying, "That's okay, let me go to her. I'll makes sure she's okay." Everyone watched as he ran toward the barn. Jonathan shook his head, looked at Susan and said, "I knew he was still in love with Meg. There was a time that I didn't think he deserved someone like her but now I think I was wrong. I've never seen him care so much for anyone like this before, not even Kiko. He loves her so much and I know he wants to protect her but I'm just so scared that it's too late for them and he's going to get hurt." Susan covered his hand with hers saying, "All we can do is pray it works out for them. Maybe after we all leave, they will spend time alone and work things out".
Ben walked into the barn toward Apache's stall. The door was closed but he knew she was there even before he looked over the gate. He couldn't help but smile when he saw them together. Apache was lying on the straw and Meg was sitting between his legs, stroking his face and talking to him in a soft voice. She was so sweet apologizing to him for taking him out so late. It was as if she was talking to a close friend. He loved her for so many reasons but she had so many levels that he wondered if he would ever discover everything about her. Ben leaned against the outside wall of Apache's stall and sighed. "How can this be happening? I thought last night was a new start but I guess I was wrong. I've lost her twice and now I don't know how to make it right. She will never forgive me if I tell her what happened between us last night. I took advantage and she will never be able to forgive me for that." He moved a few stalls away and watched while she said good bye to Apache and closed the door to his stall.
As she turned to leave, she felt a little light headed and reached out placing a hand on a nearby wall to steady herself. Just as her legs began to collapse beneath her, Ben ran to her side and cradled her in his arms. "I'm here Meg. Let me take care of you", he said as he carried her from the barn toward the house. "I'm so sorry for doing this, I just wanted to see Apache. Forgive me." "There's nothing to forgive. Just let me take care of you. You need to get some rest." Meg leaned her head against Ben's chest and fell sound asleep.
As he walked toward the pool, Jonathan ran to Ben, "Is she okay?" "She's fine, she just pushed herself a little to much. I'm going to take her up to her room." Jonathan grabbed his arm saying, "Ben, maybe you should let someone else take care of her. Rosa, please go with Ben and stay with Meg". "Dad, I love her. Please let me do this." He nodded, released his grip and watched Ben disappear into the house. Jonathan turned to the others saying, "I think it would be best if we let Ben tell Meg how he feels before any of us do". They all nodded in agreement and returned to their breakfast.
Two hours later, Meg appeared wearing a soft pastel sundress, looking as radiant as ever. Jonathan lit up when he saw her, insisting that she not overdue it. For the next few hours Ben kept his distance until all the guests left. He was sitting in the living room reading when Meg came into the house along with Jason, Alexis, Jonathan and Susan. "Well, we were wondering where you had disappeared to." "Oh I just thought you might want to spend some time with Meg alone. What's going on?", asked Ben. Jonathan turned to Susan and reached for her hand saying, "Well, we're heading back to the city. Ben can you take care of things here? "Absolutely, go ahead we'll be fine. I'll drive Meg back to the city tomorrow if the Doctor says it's okay. I'm sure she'll feel a lot stronger after she gets a good night sleep."
"Jonathan, I am so sorry, I feel as though I am putting everyone out, maybe I could just catch a ride back with Jason." Jason dropped his luggage saying, "Meg, the Doctor said you should stay here for the next few days before you went anywhere." Jonathan shook his head saying, "Meg, I know you hate this but after what you've been through, everyone here just wants to make sure you get back on your feet as soon as possible. Now, Rosa and Pete are here to make sure you take it easy. And there's Ben of course. I doubt he will leave until the Doctor say's you're well enough. So why don't you just accept it and relax." Jonathan leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her cheek. "You stay here for at least another day or I will be very upset", he said winking. "Ben can I see you outside for a few minutes?" Ben nodded and followed him to the limousine.
"A few months ago I never wanted you anywhere near Meg because I was afraid you would only hurt her, but things are different now. I saw how concerned you were when she disappeared and how much you still want to take care of her."
"I love her Dad. No one has ever made me feel the way she has. I can't lose her, please try and understand." Jonathan patted him on the shoulder saying, "I know that now and I hope things work out for both of you. Meg's happiness and yours are very important to me, I think you know that. I also think that she would be the best thing for you." "Trust me I know exactly how you feel about her and I'm going to do everything I can to build a relationship with Meg." "I'm happy to hear that. Good luck Son." Susan leaned over and kissed Ben on the cheek saying, "I know Meg loves you Ben and I also know that you will take great care of her. Just give her some more time to realize it."
Ben shook Jonathan's hand, kissed Susan and watched as they drove away. As he turned back toward the house Jason, Alexis and Meg were approaching. "Well, have a safe trip you two, I'll see you soon." He disappeared into the house and headed for the Turret. By the time he reached the balcony Jason's car had disappeared down the drive and Meg was walking through the garden, stopping every few steps to take in the perfumed scent of each flower. She looked like a beautiful child, lost in her own private world. He wanted so much to go to her, sweep her up in his arms and carry her back to his room where he could express how deeply he felt, but that couldn't happen now. She wasn't even aware that they had spent the night together. He couldn't stand the passion rising deep inside him any longer, he needed to get away and he knew the cottage was the only place he could go to be alone.
A few hours later, Meg was reading in the library when Doctor Simons arrived. "Hi there Meg, how are you feeling?" "Much better. I felt a little faint when I first got up this morning and walked around but ever since then I've had no problems." He smiled, retrieved his stethoscope from the medical bag saying, "Well, let me check you out just to make me feel better." After the examination he said, "Things look good but I still want you to rest for another day and if you have any problems, please just call me." "I will and thank you for everything." With that he said goodbye and left. Meg sat on the sofa and returned to the book she had been reading.
"Excuse me Meg, Pete was wondering if you would like an early dinner?" "That would be fine, as long as it's okay with Ben." "Oh, uh, well Ben left hours ago for the cottage, he said he would be back later this evening. So it's up to you when you would like to eat." Meg closed the book and placed it back in the shelf before responding.
"Rosa, would it be much trouble if Pete packed the dinner in a basket?" "No, I don't think that would be a problem at all." "Great. Could you also ask him to make sure there is enough for two. And one more favor, could you ask Jake if he could drop me off at the cottage?" Rosa started toward the kitchen saying, "Are you sure you're feeling up to it Meg?" "Yes Rosa, I'm fine and the Doctor gave me a clean bill of health, so don't worry. Please tell Jake I'll be down in a few minutes. Thanks."
It was almost six thirty when Jake dropped Meg off in front of the cottage. "Are you sure you don't want me to wait?" "That's okay Jake, I'll be fine and thank you. Oh, and don't forget to give Apache his carrots." Jake laughed and watched as she entered the cottage thinking, "I wish those two would realize what they have."
As she entered the stone foyer, she called out to Ben but there was no answer. The signs of someone having been in the living room were all there, a roaring fire, an open book face down on the overstuffed chair and a half-consumed glass of wine.
When there was still no answer from repeated calls, Meg deposited the picnic basket on the dinning room table and then walked to the fireplace wondering where he could have gone. His Blazer was parked in the drive so he had to be nearby, she thought. As she stared into the fire, the flashes of her and Ben making love continued to flood her mind and suddenly she knew they were no longer just fantasies but images of a night she was struggling to remember. Meg was startled out of her reverie when he entered the room carrying an arm full of freshly chopped firewood. Their eyes locked and she stood silent for a moment not moving, as though she was a deer being gas-lighted. Ben dropped the wood into the fireplace basket and wiped his hands on the back of his jeans. "Meg, what the hell are you doing here?" "I, uh, Rosa said you weren't going to be home for dinner so I thought I would bring you something to eat, besides the Doctor told me I was doing fine."
Ben shook his head, reached for her hand and led her to the couch. "I didn't mean to yell but you are suppose to be resting not running around making me meals, no matter what the Doctor said. I just want you to be okay."
"Ben, please don't be angry, I'm fine. You've been taking such good care of me since the accident and I just wanted to show you how much I appreciate it. Besides, Pete made the picnic and Jake drove me out here, so I really have been taking it very easy. I needed to speak to you, it's very important." He rubbed his thumb across the back of her hand and placed his hand on the side of her face saying, "I'm not upset with you, it's just that I couldn't bare it if something happened to you, again." He leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. "You said you wanted to talk to me but can it wait for a few minutes while I take a shower and change my clothes? I'm pretty dirty." Meg nodded saying, "Sure, go ahead and clean up. I'll see what Pete packed for us. He told me it was a surprise but I have a feeling it's his famous fried chicken with some of his homemade pasta salads".
Twenty minutes later as Ben stepped from the shower and pulled a towel around his waist, he wondered if Meg had started to remember what had happened between them. As he shaved, his mind was busy trying to sort out how he would explain making love to her. "If she does remember, I hope she can forgive me", he thought as he headed into the bedroom to change.
When he entered the room, Meg was sitting on the bed. "Is there something wrong?" She smiled and reached out her hand saying, "No, I was waiting to talk to you." Ben took her hand and sat next to her on the bed. "Uh, why don't I put some clothes on first", he laughed. "Actually, this can't wait." As she squeezed his hand, she explained that she was having flash backs of their night together. "At first I thought it was a dream about our first time together but it wasn't though was it?"
Ben could feel the ache in his heart as he struggled to answer. "No, no it wasn't. Meg, I need to explain. I didn't intend for it to happen, I just wanted to take care of you but you were so beautiful and you kept asking me to make love to you. I thought it was probably the drugs that the Doctor gave you but I wanted you so much I couldn't resist. Can you ever forgive me?"
Meg placed her hand on the side of his face saying, "It wasn't the drugs. I wanted you Ben. I just couldn't admit it to myself before you married Kiko. Then after spending these past weeks with you, I couldn't deny how I felt any longer, that's why I told you that I loved you last night before I ran away. When I woke this morning, I didn't remember anything that happened after the accident. Then the flash backs started. At first I thought it was about our first time together. But as I was walking in the garden, I stopped by a rose bush and remembered waking last night and seeing the white roses on my night table. I also remembered how I felt and how much I wanted you." Before continuing, she brought his hand to her mouth and kissed it. "All these months I've been trying to get you out of my heart by getting involved with other men, but it didn't work. When we started working together, all those feelings I tried to bury came flooding back."
Ben placed his hands on the side of her face, pulled her to his mouth kissing her softly on the lips. "I've never stopped loving you Meg. I never will." He lowered her onto the bed as he kissed her again more passionately than before. A few moments later, Meg broke away from his mouth saying, "Ben, I love you so much". "I've never wanted any woman the way I want you. I need to make love to you now." "No, wait. Please." He slowly moved backed to a sitting position. "Is something wrong?" Before answering, Meg stood and moved between his legs.
"Nothing at all", she said slowly untying the bodice of her sundress and dropping it to the floor as he watched. She stood completely naked, except for panties. Without saying a word she leaned down and kissed his mouth. Ben's hands moved under her aching breasts and began gently massaging as she deepened the kiss. As he moved his wet lips up and down her neck, she broke away moaning, "Oh God, I've missed the way your mouth makes me feel." Ben continued his sensual assault as her moans grew louder.
She silently urged him to lift his hips up so she could strip off his towel, freeing his bulging manhood. When he moved completely onto the bed, he watched as she stepped out of her panties before moving over him and straddling his hips. "Baby, you're driving me crazy. I want to make love to you now."
He gently pulled her toward his mouth. After kissing her, he whispered, "I love you so much". "I love you too Ben." He moved her onto the bed and knelt over her kissing her deeply as he rested on his forearms. Slowly he slid between her legs and in one smooth movement, entered her. They matched each other's movements until they reached the climax they both desired. Seconds later Ben collapsed at Meg's side, pulling her onto his chest and closing his arms around her tiny form. He released a deep sigh, buried his face into her hair and placed a soft kiss on her head. "Meg, that was so wonderful. Every time we make love it's like the first time. Only better. Promise me that you won't ever leave me again."
Meg stroked his chest with her fingers saying, "I thought I knew what love was when I first met Philip but I was wrong. No one has ever made me feel the way you do and it's so overwhelming that it scares me. I've never loved anyone they way I love you Ben".
"Don't be afraid Meg, I love you too and I will never do anything to hurt you ever again. I promise." His grip tightened as he pulled her closer to his chest, as if he wanted to absorb every inch of her into his soul. "Forgive me for last night. I should never have taken advantage of you in that condition." Meg pushed away from his chest, stared into his eyes for a second before responding. "There is nothing to forgive. I was hurt and scared but you rescued me. I needed to feel safe and you did that. You loved me when I needed it the most and I only regret that I wasted so much time finding my way back to you." Ben pulled her to his mouth, kissing her softly. "I need you Meg and I want to spend the rest of my life showing you just how much I love you."
