Chapter
11
It
was getting late. Derek was sitting in his cell counting the seconds to the
start. Suddenly he heard a gunshot.
“Looks
like we’re gonna be going home” he smiled and soon he saw the man he had
talked to earlier.
“It’s
clear” the man said and handed Derek a gun “Good luck”
“Thanks.
You know what to do in case something goes wrong?”
“Of
course I do”
“All
right. You’ll get your money later” Derek assured.
“Don’t
worry about that” the man said and Derek started running along the corridor.
It was empty. He saw two guards lying next to the door. They were both dead.
“Great
job, Sam” Derek laughed and went outside the station. No one noticed him. He
called for a cab and told the driver to drive him to the airport. When they
reached their destination, the driver asked for money:
“Ten
dollars, please” but unfortunately, instead of his money, he saw a gun pointed
at him.
“Not
one more word” Derek ordered and got off the car “And if you try anything,
you’re dead! Do you understand me?! DEAD!” Derek added still pointing the
gun at the driver “Don’t scream and you’re not gonna get hurt!” the
driver remained silent until Derek disappeared. He decided not to call anyone.
He didn’t want to risk his life for ten dollars.
Derek
hid the gun and entered the airport. He went to the ticket office and asked:
“I
need a ticket for the nearest flight to Sunset Beach, California”
“Wait
a minute, I’ll check” the woman answered and went through some files in the
computer “I’m sorry” she said “But all the nearest flights are full. You
can leave tomorrow at five o’clock in the morning”
“I
can’t wait that long. I need to fly today!”
“I’m
sorry”
“Damn
it! I need a ticket for tonight!”
“I’m
sorry, I can’t help you here” the woman answered and seeing Derek’s sight,
she added “Are you leaving or do you want me to call the security?”
“All
right, all right, I’m going” he answered and heard a voice announcing:
“Passengers
of flight 1563 to Sunset Beach are asked to come to the entrance number 3, the
plane is taking off in a few minutes” Derek thought for a moment and suddenly
he noticed a man coming closer to the entrance number 3. He approached him:
“Excuse
me? Are you taking this flight?”
“Yes
I am” the man answered.
“I
am too, but you see, I have a very heavy luggage. Do you think you can help me
with it? It’s right over there”
“Sure”
the man answered and Derek led him to a small room in the corner of the airport.
“So,
where is your luggage?” the man asked but didn’t get the answer as Derek hit
his head making him unconscious. Derek took his money, documents and what’s
the most important, the ticked to Sunset Beach. Quickly he left the room and
reached the entrance number 3. He had his ticket checked and he heard a nice
voice of a woman who did this:
“Have
a nice flight, Mr. Trevis” the woman read from the ticket.
“Thank
you” Derek smiled and got into the plane. He took his seat and looked proudly
at the ticket “Derek, you are the big winner!” he laughed and sat
comfortably.
Chapter
12
Tracy
had just finished eating late supper and she was now sitting in her living –
room, sipping ice tea. She turned on TV trying to forget about everything that
happened before. She was glad that her sister’s killer was finally in jail and
that she was going to arrest Tess as well. But he couldn’t stop thinking about
Ben and how hard it must be for Ben to deal with the fact that his brother is
such an evil person. She knew that Ben was good and that it must have hurt him a
lot.
Tracy
put the tea down and reached for the remote control. At the same time her cell
phone rang.
“Tracy Nixon” she answered.
“Detective
Nixon, it’s sergeant Williamson. We have bed news for you”
“What
bad news?”
“Derek
has escaped from the station”
“What?!!!”
Tracy screamed angry “Is this some kind of a joke?”
“I
wish it was, but it’s not. Derek escaped about one hour ago”
“What
do you mean he escaped?! How did this happen?! How could you let that
happen?!”
“We
don’t know what exactly happened. We suspect that he had a partner who helped
him. Two guards were killed. We still don’t know who did this”
“God,
I can’t believe it. How could this happen? How?”
“I’m
sorry, detective Nixon”
“I
am too” she answered and sighed “Look, I’m on my way to the station, I
need to find out what happened”
“All
right, bye”
“Bye”
she answered and hang up. She immediately dialed the number to Sparks Hotel.
When the receptionist answered, she said “It’s Tracy Nixon speaking. Can you
please connect me with Mr. Evans’s room. I need to talk to him. It’s very
important”
“Please,
wait a minute” the receptionist asked.
“Sure”
she replied and after a while she heard Ben’s voice.
“Ben
Evans”
“Hi,
Ben. It’s Tracy. Listen, your brother has escaped from jail and we have no
idea where to find him…”
“What
do you mean he escaped? What are you talking about?”
“I
know this sounds really unpleasant, but Derek managed somehow to escape and he
is now nowhere to be found”
“Damn
him!!!” Ben screamed “Where the hell could he go?”
“I
have no idea. Listen, I’m gonna be going to the station now to find out
something more about it. I will call you as soon as I know something”
“There’s
no need. I will come down to the station”
“Are
you sure?”
“Yes.
Besides I think I‘m gonna be taking the first flight to Sunset Beach”
“Do
you think Derek could have gone there?”
“I
don’t know but that’s possible”
“All
right then, see you at the station. Bye”
“Bye”
Ben replied and started quickly packing his things. He couldn’t believe that
Derek had managed to escape. Ben
knew that Derek would want to hurt someone, he just didn’t know who was the
first one to be Derek’s target.
Chapter
13
Ben
rushed to the station as fast as he could. He found Tracy talking to one of
the officers. He didn’t hear the conversation, but he could see how angry
Tracy was. Soon, the officer left and Ben came closer to Tracy.
“What’s
going on?” he asked.
“God,
no one knows anything. Damn it, how could they let that happen?! What a band
of failures!!!” Tracy was screaming angrily.
“And
you have no idea where he could be?”
“No.
God, I can’t believe that he really did this”
“Hey,
don’t worry, we’ll find him” Ben was trying to comfort her although he
wasn’t so sure about what he was saying.
“We
have to” Tracy added “Before he hurts anyone”
“Yeah.
Look, I wish I could help you here, but I decided to take first plane to
Sunset Beach”
“Then
looks like we’re gonna be going together”
“What
do you mean?”
“I’m
flying to Sunset Beach right away. I had a ticket booked for the flight at ten
o’clock tomorrow, but I can’t wait that long. Besides, the police will
take care of the case here”
“Do
you need to come back home for your things?”
“No,
I have already packed them. Looks like all we need to do is call a cab”
“The
cab is already here. I told the driver to wait”
“Great,
I’ll be right back” Tracy said and came back a minute later with her
suitcase. They left the station and got into the car. After a while they
reached the airport. They paid for a cab and went to the ticket office, asking
about the nearest plane to Sunset Beach.
“I’m
sorry but the first flight is at five o’clock” they heard an answer.
“Damn
it” Ben was angry.
“So,
what are we doing?” Tracy asked.
“We
have no choice. We’re taking this flight”
“All
right”
“Shall
I book the tickets?” the woman in the ticket office asked.
“Yes”
Ben answered “For Tracy Nixon and Ben Evans”
“All
right. Just wait a minute”
“Sure”
Ben replied and after a minute the woman handed him two tickets.
“Thank
you” Ben took the tickets and paid for them.
“So,
what do we do now?” asked Tracy when they sat on the chairs in the hall.
“I
don’t know. I guess we just wait here. Unless you want to go home for this
three or fours hours”
“No,
no, there’s no point”
“Well,
then I guess – have a nice waiting time” Ben smiled.
“Thanks”
“Oh,
an do you mind if I leave you for a moment. I’d like to call Meg”
“Sure,
go ahead” Tracy answered and Ben went to the phone. He dialed Surf –
Central’s number but there was no answer. It was strange that no one was
there since it was one o’clock in the middle of the night. But then he
thought that maybe they were all sleeping and he shouldn’t wake them up, so
he hang up. He was worried about Meg but he also knew that since Sunset Beach
police knew about Derek, Meg knew about him too, so there was no reason to
panic. He went back to Tracy.
“And?”
she asked.
“I
couldn’t get in touch with her, there was no answer”
“She
must be sleeping at this time”
“Yeah”
Ben sighed.
“Don’t
worry. I’m sure that if she was in danger because of Derek, the police would
take care of her”
“I
hope so” Ben replied and he really tried to believe that. But he also knew
that he would not calm down until he has Meg in his arms again.
Chapter
14
“We’re
gonna be landing in Sunset Beach in a few minutes, so please buck up and stay
calm” as Derek heard those words, he smiled to himself and thought
“Welcome California, are you ready for me? I bet you’re not, but what the
hell… I’m coming” he smiled again and started counting the money in the
wallet he had stolen “Wow, three hundred seventy six, thanks Mr. Trevis”
Derek looked at the driving license in the wallet. Suddenly he realized that
the plane was landing, so he started counting the seconds until he stands on
California ground once again.
The
plane stopped. The passengers heard a voice:
“We
have just landed in Sunset Beach. You may take your luggage now” since Derek
had no luggage, he left the plane and the airport as fast as he could and
called for a cab.
“Ocean
Avenue” he asked getting into the car.
“Sure”
the driver answered and after a few minutes they reached Ben’s house. This
time Derek didn’t want any trouble, so he paid the driver and got off. His
first thought was to go into the house and warn Tess about everything, but
then he started having second thoughts:
“Damn
it, I can’t just go in there… What if I Maria or Benjy opens the door…
what will I say? No, they cannot find out that I’m back” he started
divagating and after a while he nearly shouted “Call her, you idiot”. He
started wondering why he hadn’t thought about it earlier. He found the
nearest phone and dialed Ben’s house number. he was glad to hear Tess.
“Hello”
she answered with sleepy voice.
“Hello,
darling” Derek said smiling to himself.
“Who’s
this?”
“Don’t
tell me you don’t recognize me” Derek laughed.
“Look,
whoever you are, I don’t have time for games. What the hell were you
thinking calling here so early in the morning?”
“I
was thinking how wonderful it would be to hear your voice again. I’ve missed
you sweetheart”
“Oh
my God!” Tess was finally starting to understand it “Derek, it’s you!”
she screamed and froze, scared that somebody might have heard her. But
fortunately, Maria and Benjy were still sleeping.
“Bingo”
Derek smiled.
“Oh
my God, Derek, where have you been?”
“That’s
a long story”
“But
where are you? Is everything OK in Seattle?”
“Well,
actually I’m not in Seattle anymore”
“Then
where are you?”
“I’m
in Sunset Beach”
“What?”
Tess was shocked “In Sunset Beach?”
“Yes.
Look, we have some problems in Seattle. Big problems. They know who you are
and where to find you. My charming brother told them. They put me in jail, but
I escaped so I’m sure they’re after me. They don’t know that I’m in
Sunset Beach, but soon they will figure it out and we’re dead then. Tess, we
need to get away from Sunset Beach, from California and who knows, maybe we
will even have to leave the States”
“What?”
Tess got scared “But Derek…”
“No
buts. We have to get away, Tess. Unless you want to spend the rest of your
life in jail”
“No,
of course I don’t”
“Then
listen – you have two hours to get your things and if necessary explain
yourself to Maria. I’ll meet you ta the airport in two hours. I will have
the tickets”
“Where
to?”
“I
don’t know, as far away from Sunset Beach as possible… Any other
questions?”
“Yes”
Tess answered firmly “What will you be doing during these two hours? It
doesn’t take so long to buy the tickets”
“Oh,
I have one thing to take care of here”
“What
thing?”
“Something
I have been looking forward for a long time” Derek smiled and added
“Remember – in two hours at the airport”
“All
right, all right” Tess agreed “Bye” she hang up.
“Bye,
Tess” Derek laughed “And welcome Meg”
Chapter
15
Derek
was slowly coming closer to Surf – Central. He had just seen Casey going to
the beach what meant that Meg was alone.
“Perfect”
he said to himself and smiled “Get ready for a big surprise, Meg”
The
door to Surf – Central were closed, but he had no difficulties opening it.
He went inside. It was very quiet.
‘Meg
must be still sleeping” he thought and went closer to the phone. He cut the
wire “We won’t need that, now will we, Meg?” he smiled and started
climbing the stairs. He reached Meg’s room and softly pressed the handle.
The door was open. He went inside and saw Meg tossing in her bed. He kept
staring at her for a moment.
“I
have to admit, Ben – you have a great taste” Derek thought “She is very
hot little one” he smiled and remembered how he and Meg were making love in
the warehouse. he couldn’t forget the way she had kissed him, the way she
had touched him… He would give anything to experience this once again.
He
looked at her one more time.
“I
wonder what she’s dreaming about” he thought and soon he found an answer
to that.
“Ben,
I love you… Ben…” Meg started moaning in her sleep.
“So,
you’re thinking about dear brother Ben” he thought “Well, sorry to
disappoint you, but you will have to be content with me”
“Ben”
Meg whispered once again and she started to wake up. Derek sat on the bed,
wanting for Meg to see him when she wakes up. When she finally opened her
eyes, she almost got a heart attack.
“Ben?!”
she was apparently shocked to see him.
“Hello,
sleeping beauty” he tried to stroke her hair, but she moved her head back.
“What
are you doing here?” she asked.
“You
know that I never could handle being away from you… I had to see you”
“Ben…”
she looked at him with reproach.
“Meg,
what’s wrong, sweetheart…”
“How
can you do this, Ben? How can you come in here and call me sweetheart after
everything that’s happen between us?”
“I
thought that you would be happy to see me”
“Happy?
What made you think that I would be happy to see you? You know how hard it is
for me to see you… especially now, when you’re back with your wife”
“How
an you say that? How can you even think that I could come back to Maria? You
know that since the second I saw you, you’ve been the only woman in my life.
The only one I really loved” Derek said hoping that this would make a hit.
And he wasn’t wrong. Meg looked at him with sad, tearful eyes.
“Ben,
don’t say that…” she nearly cried.
“Why?
It’s true. I love you”
“No,
Ben, please”
“Meg,
I do love you. Really”
“Then
why did you sleep with Maria?”
“I
don’t know… It just happened… Look, it didn’t mean anything to me”
“How
can you say that?”
“Because
it’s true. I love you. Only you” he repeated and leaned to kiss her. She
felt her body was thrilling. She knew she shouldn’t do this, but the
emotions were stronger. And they were telling her to give in. So she did give
in, letting Derek gently kiss her lips…
