Terraforming Mars

An artist's concept of how a Mars colony may look on a terraformed Mars.

What needs to be done?

Let's start by defining the term Terraforming. As we have read Mars is not a very livable planet for humans, and terraforming is the process in which humans transform the Martian atmosphere to create a more habitable environment. The process in which we would go about changing the environment on Mars is to increase the atmospheric pressure and temperature. To do this, scientists have purposed the idea to release strong greenhouse gasses specifically, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). These gases would strengthen the greenhouse effect, which in turn creates warmer temperatures, releasing carbon dioxide gas. This release would increase the atmospheric pressure and further strengthen the greenhouse effect. Although this process is very logical, it is unclear to conclude that this would make the environment fully habitable for humans. If we could succeed in creating Earth-like pressure and temperature, humans could walk on mars with just an air tank. What an accomplishment that would be for science and technology. But with everything comes a difficult road to pass. Terraforming Mars, or any planet for that matter, is a very controversial issue among our society. There are a lot of moral and ethical issues to deal with before going about changing Mars' atmosphere. Many people feel that it is wrong to contaminate another planet. Some feel that we should learn how to take care of our own planet before we try to colonize on another one. Of course this will not be happening in our life time, this is a long, drawn out process that needs a lot of intense research.
