The Right Housing

Guinea pigs don't need much room in order to live and grow. A single guinea pig needs a room of 40x80cm. A cage with wire all the way round and a enclosed bedding area is suitable for outside as long as it is clear from drafts, rain, wind and most importantly heat. Guinea pigs suffer greatly from heat stress and if they do get stressed they are certain to death. If you do find a guinea pig that is suffering from heat stress place them into a bath of water (not too cold or you will scare the guinea pig) until it cools. Indoor cages are also available for purchase but are much more expensive than an outdoor cage.

Food hoppers and Hay feeders

One or more food hoppers must be placed around the cage however don't place them in the bedding area ( you don't eat your food in your bed at every meal). Hay feeders are needed to keep hay clean and unsoiled.

Containers for Food and Water

Food and water containers should be made out of porcelain so that they can not be easily tipped over. The only problem with porcelain food hoppers is that they tend to heat up in the sun and grow excess mould. So make sure that they are cleaned every day. Place one or more food and water containers around the cage to ensure that if one bowl gets tipped over then the other one will still provide enough water.
