The Hamel Fire Dept. actively participates in fire safety and fire prevention programs
at both of our local schools. Yearly, the Madison County Firemen's Assn.
"Save-a-Life" house (a two story, volunteer designed and built structure on a trailer) is
taken to both the public and parochial schools in town for a presentation. After a brief
lecture about basic fire safety, a session of climbing all over the fire truck, and a
demonstration of a firefighter in full turnout gear, the students and teachers are led into
the smoke house. The house is then filled with a training grade, non-toxic smoke. Smoke
alarms are manually set off and students then evacuate the structure in a calm manner, giving
them practice for the day they may need to know how. Yearly inspections of both schools
are also conducted, and student fire drills are a part of these as well.
