Heidelberger Schloss = Heidelberg Castle

The Heidelberg Schloss is just a short walk from the Heidelberg Altstadt.

First built as a Fortress just after 1300, it continued to grow into a Renaissance palace with gardens, completed by the mid 17th century. During the War of Orleans Succession in 1693 it was blown up, razed and fell into ruin. It was then rebuilt again in part, to be once again destroyed by lightning in 1764. It has remained a ruin since then.

From the castle, you can see an outstanding view of Heidelberg, the Neckar River, and surrounding areas.

Here is a view of the city through one of the many small stone windows in the castle.
