Hello,
I am Sheriff Don L.
Schieferdecker. I want to welcome
you to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office web site.
I hope you enjoy our web site full of information about the Schuyler
County Sheriff’s Department and all of its duties.
I have
been with the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department since October 14, 1980.
I started out working part time as a radio dispatcher and part time
deputy for the honorable sheriff Robert Lashbrook.
I also worked part time for the Rushville City Police under Chief of
Police Wayne Diseron. In 1981 I
began my duties as a deputy sheriff and attended the Police Training Academy at
the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.
Upon completion of the police academy I became a certified State of
Illinois Juvenile Officer. I worked
for three sheriffs and was appointed sheriff on March 15, 1996 at 1000 a.m.
I ran for my first election November 5th, 1996 and have been
re-elected again to the office of sheriff in 1998 and 2002.
I continue to keep myself fully trained as sheriff by attending numerous
hours of training yearly along with three yearly sheriff’s training
academy’s sponsored by the Illinois Sheriff’s Association and the Illinois
State Training and Standards Board. I
proudly sit on the board of directors of the West Central Illinois Training Unit
which is responsible for training of all officers in several counties in West
central Illinois. I am a member of
the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, the National Sheriff’s Association, the
Rushville Fire Department and many other organizations.
I am certified in many fields of law enforcement enabling me to better
serve the citizens of Schuyler County.
I am very proud of the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department.
I am very proud of the employees of which make it all happen and of the
department for what it stands for and represents daily.
I am honored to be the top law enforcement officer in Schuyler County,
your sheriff.

The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is located in the City of Rushville, the county seat of Schuyler County. We are located in West Central Illinois. Our county is bordered by the Illinois River on the south and east side. The population of Rushville is approximately 3,300 people. The population of the county is approximately 7, 700 and is 474 square miles in size.


The
office of sheriff was founded in 1825 for the citizens of Schuyler County.
The sheriff of each county in the State of Illinois is the chief law
enforcement officer for each county per Illinois Revised Statute.
The sheriff of Schuyler County conducts all department business from his
office located in the Schuyler County Jail which joins the Schuyler County
courthouse on the west side. The
county jail and the sheriff’s office are combined in the jail building.
Our dispatch and corrections officers provide a professional service to
all of the citizens in Schuyler County in many ways.
The county jail can house 32 inmates and has it’s own kitchen and
laundry for all inmates there. The
county jail books and houses an average of 1100 prisoners a year.![]()
