"SFB is the culmination of five long years of learning, hard work, and growing up." Paul Stasiowski, bass and back-up vocals
The core of SFB; Galen Kline, lead vocals and keyboards, Paul Stasiowski, bass and back-up vocals, and Dave Stasiowski, guitar; formed way back in 1990. The three met in band class at Novato High as juniors. Paul and Dave, wanting to expand their musical abilities, convinced Galen to teach them guitar. Both were eager and quick learners, so Galen soon introduced the next step, a band.
The band was Teratoid, and the style was metal. The addition of a drummer was just the spark they needed. Three months later, they had a demo. Six months later, they had a local gig. Nine months later, they were playing the Stone in San Francisco. Teratoid settled into a specific style, and the members soon became bored. Galen wanted a more Death Metal sound, Paul was interested in Ska, and Dave was leaning more toward classic rock. Since they couldn't agree on a sound, Teratoid decided to split up. A year and a half later the three decided to get together and jam again, for old time's sake. They began to experiment with new styles of music and, the more they experimented, the more they liked their new sound.
"SFB stands for whatever you want it to. People like to have things defined for them, and our music is different for everyone." Galen Kline, lead vocals and keyboards.
As SFB, Dave, Galen, and Paul learned from their mistakes as Teratoid. They only play music that they like and no longer worry about fitting into a specific genre. SFB started with Dave, Galen, and Paul getting together when they could, usually only in January and the summer months. This lasted for two years and produced two demos, including the "Counting the Scars" demo. About a year ago, SFB underwent another change, they added a drummer. Winslow Kelley greatly enhanced the strength of SFB's live performances, as well as added a new dimension to SFB's sound.
In the last few months, SFB has played the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, Magnolia's in Santa Rosa, the Cactus Club in San Jose, the Berkeley Square, Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, Gilman St. In Berkeley, the Inn of the Beginning in Cotati, and The Faultline in San Rafael, to name just a few. These frequent performances, in addition to radio interviews on KSUN and KXLU, have created quite a fan base for SFB.
Thier first CD, entitled "Smash the World" was recorded in downtown Santa Rosa at Clubhouse Records, and was produced by Jane Clark who in her fifteen year tenure at Motown Records worked with such artists as Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores. The album has given the band greater attention from various labels and promoters, not to mention more accessibility to radio stations around the world.
"Whenever someone asks me what kind of music I play, I just let them hear theC.D. , and let them decide. If they like it, cool, if not, oh well, no big." Dave Stasiowski, guitar.
