Motor Vehicle Laws
In Indiana, you may make a right turn on red unless otherwise noted. (Left turns on red from a one-way street onto a one-way street also are allowed.) A complete stop is required before turning. Speed limits are generally 30 mph in town and 55 mph on highways. Interstate speeds are 70 mph in rural areas and 55 mph in or near cities. Buckle your seat belt in Indiana; it’s the law. Children under age 4 must be secured in a car seat and children ages 4-12 must be in a child’s safety seat or seatbelt. To establish residency, register your vehicle and get your Indiana driver’s license within 60 days of moving to the state. You’ll be required to pass visual and written tests and surrender your old license.
