Break the Disease Cycle

Without recently dead trees or branches Elm Bark Beetles have a place to breed.
What can you do?

  • Dispose of all elm branches, logs or trees.
  • Do not store or transport elm in any form except when taking it to the
nuisance grounds for burning or burying.
  • Prune dead branches from healthy elms when the beetles arenot active-from
    September to March.

Adult bark beetles usually overwinter only at the base of healthy elm trees.

What can you do?

  • Spray the base of healthy trees in August with a .5% solution of chlorpyrifos
and water to kill the overwintering beetles.

Pruning

Proper pruning will improve the health and appearance of
your trees. If it is not done correctly, however, it could increase
the likelihood of Dutch Elm Disease. Ripped bark will attrack elm
bark beetles, so ensure that branches are properly cut.

Method to Prune Larger Branches to Avoid Bark Ripping
  1. Undercut branch approximately 30cm from trunk.
  2. Topcut branch 45cm from trunk until branch falls.
  3. Remove remaining stub flush to the branch collar
