Les Sherman Park, sw of soccer field.
- Botanical Name: Prunus virginiana
- Drought Resistant/Sun/Attracts Wildlife
- Height & Spread: 5-7m x 3m
- Form: upright spreading
- Leaf: alternate, reddish-purple leaves; leaves emerge green
and turn colour by midsummer
- Bark: smooth with horizontal lenticels(stripes); purplish
- Flower: long, white, hanging clusters in May
- Fruit: dark purple, juicy, bitter berry ripens in July/August
- Problems: suckers; black knot
- Use: small, ornamental tree; provide fruit and cover for birds;
berries are used for jelly and syrup
