Tree Tour: 'Schubert' Chokecherry

Location: (2004)
Les Sherman Park, sw of soccer field.

  • Botanical Name: Prunus virginiana
  • Drought Resistant/Sun/Attracts Wildlife
  • Height & Spread: 5-7m x 3m
  • Form: upright spreading
  • Leaf: alternate, reddish-purple leaves; leaves emerge green
    and turn colour by midsummer
  • Bark: smooth with horizontal lenticels(stripes); purplish
  • Flower: long, white, hanging clusters in May
  • Fruit: dark purple, juicy, bitter berry ripens in July/August
  • Problems: suckers; black knot
  • Use: small, ornamental tree; provide fruit and cover for birds;
    berries are used for jelly and syrup
