In
this World War I era sequel to
Tarzan
the Untamed
Tarzan
sets out to attempt Jane's rescue from a
deranged
officer of the German Army.
His
search takes him into the
strange
prehistoric land of Pal-ul-don which
contains
Jurassic-type flora and fauna and is inhabited by
two
rival races of tailed humans.
Tarzan
convinces the inhabitants that he is a god and
experiences
many fantastic adventures
as
he searches for his missing mate.
Burroughs
often said that Tarzan of the Apes was
the
most important of his Tarzan books, but
Tarzan
the Terrible was his favourite.
Burroughs
biographer Irwin Porges observed that
Tarzan
the Terrible
is
a story which demonstrates that
"hostility
caused by mere differences
in
color or appearances or customs,
no
matter where it occurs,
can
be eliminated through honest efforts at
friendship
and understanding."
