Born on Vulcan, and is descended from Vulcan parents. As he grew up, he expressed an interest in science, specifically astronomy, but was also troubled by the unVulcan words that sometimes proceeded out of his mouth. He didn't see anything wrong with what he was saying, but others plainly did. He was stuck between two worlds - the humans he knew were too emotional, he thought, but the Vulcans he knew didn't show any emotion, and he didn't agree with that. He thought that showing a little emotion from time to time was acceptable He told his parents that there was nothing wrong with him, but they were not satisfied. They convinced him to spend time at a monastery instead of going to the Vulcan Science Academy as he had hoped to. He stayed there for nearly five years, to the age of 23. He decided that he had enough of Vulcan logic; he left the monastery and went to the human sector of a large city on Vulcan. Unfortunately, this was not the best area of town. Crime on Vulcan was low, but here it was slightly higher. He survived three assaults in the first six months he was there; he did more than survive - the attackers knew not to return again to see Marko of Vulcan. Some people took notice, and had him give being security guard at some high-crime areas of the city. He was successful at this, and impressed the human friends he was acquiring. As he started to get into the technology-side of security, the crime rate started to go down. Too much, in fact. His employer suggested that he give Starfleet Academy a try; the employer didn't like seeing his security guards fall asleep and get away with it.
Marko graduated from Starfleet Academy at the age of 30, majoring in Security, but minored in Astrophysics and Engineering, as he wasn't sure if he wanted to remain in such a dangerous occupation for the rest of his life. He spent the next two years on Mars, which had a higher crime rate than Vulcan. Deep inside the isolated caves, he had many interesting experiences, and was commissioned as a Security officer, with his commanding officer being pleased with his efforts. He then spent the remainder of the war with the Dominion on various starships, as his services were in demand. He went on a couple of armed away missions to fight ground-based Gem'Hadar, both of which ended fairly quickly with the Dominion forces greatly outnumbered. He spent a year helping the Federation solidify their position in the Alpha Quadrant. At 34, he spent a quiet year on the exploratory vessel USS Einstein. That ship had security onboard really only a precaution, and as a result, Marko spent a third of his on-duty time aiding a little in the Astrophysics and helping the occasional repair in Engineering. He spent a lot of time focusing on the science that he had forgotten, and learned more about engineering. Near the end of this tour of duty, the ship was penetrated by a Ferengi attack team, seeking to steal what they perceived to be valuable items. Marko was able to stop them, but he knew he was a little bit rusty. He hadn't been taking the Einstein's security as seriously as he should have, and had been slack in running holographic simulations. So, he requested transfer to a ship more in need of security. The result was the USS George W. Bush, commanded by Admiral Star. He was still interested in astrophysics and engineering, but he decided that as long as he was a security officer, he would focus on security.
