Gold was first discovered in Nome in 1898. Over the next few years, the
Gold Rush was on as thousands of prospectors set up camp in area, working the beach by day and
visitng the bustling saloons in the evening.
Aging gold dredging relics can be seen scattered around Nome, including The Swanberg Dredge (pictured at left), which is an easy walk
from downtown.
Today, prospectors can still be observed panning and dredging for gold along the beaches of Nome.
