GENERAL PHILOSOPHY
Troop 4 is first and foremost a Boy Scout run organization. We believe that the greatest growth and experience comes with provided opportunities for leadership and responsibility.

Adult participation is required to ensure the program’s goals can be achieved.

The Scout will get as much out of Scouting as he puts in to it. Family support and participation greatly contributes to a Scout’s advancement and interest.

In Columbia and the surrounding communities, academics, sports, music and other personal achievement goals can at times conflict with Troop 4 activities. We want our Scouts to take advantage of all opportunities. We encourage attendance at meetings and outings, but regular attendance is not mandatory in order to be a member.

As parents, Scout leaders, active adults or committee members, we want our boys to be well-rounded young men.

We have been fortunate in maintaining the size of our troop at about 25 Scouts. This affords personal attention from adult leaders and Scouts can form stronger bonds with their peers in a smaller setting.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT
Scouting ranks include: Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle.

For more information, check out our Advancement Policy.

Each rank requires the Scout to learn basic camping, safety and first aid skills. As a Scout masters basic skills, merit badges are added to the requirements to allow the Scout to focus on specific skills. Generally, most Scouts reach the rank of First Class Scout in one year.

In addition to personal rank advancement, there are several Troop positions the boys can serve in, they include: Senior Patrol Leader, Asst. Senior Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Patrol Leader, Asst. Patrol Leader, Librarian, Historian, etc. These positions allow each Scout to gain experience in both leadership and responsibility.  See our organization chart.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES
Troop 4 is active year-round:

  • Troop Meetings on Monday Nights
  • Camp Outs - Monthly
  • Summer Camp - As decided by the Troop committee

HIGH ADVENTURE
Troop 4 has traveled to New Mexico - Philmont Scout Ranch and plans to visit Florida - Sea Base.

VENTURE CREW
Venturing is for young men and young women ages 14 to 20. It includes challenging high-adventure activities, sports, and hobbies for teenagers that teach them leadership skills, provide opportunities to teach others, and give them an opportunity to learn and grow in a supporting, caring, and fun environment.

FUNDRAISERS
In order to pay for outings, supplies, and patches for advancement, the Troop holds various fundraisers during the year. They include:

  • Popcorn Sales
  • Candle Sales
  • EXPO Ticket Sales

Scouts who participate in these events earn a percentage of the sale, which gives the scout the ability to fund his own participation in Patrol outings.

MEETING FACILITIES
St. Martins in the fields Episcopal Church is our chartering organization. The Troop has the use of a spacious youth meeting room. We also have use of an adjoining kitchen and a dedicated separate room for equipment storage.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Troop 4 participates in several community service functions: Marathons, Food Drives, & Trail clearing.

AWARD CEREMONIES
We recognize the advancements in rank and other accomplishments of our Scouts and adults throughout the year. We believe it is important to provide positive feedback to our young men. Our "Court of Honor", as the ceremony is called, instills pride in the Scout and encourages further advancement.

Eagle Scout ceremonies are planned as needed. This is a special once-in-a-lifetime event for the Scout, his family and the Troop.

COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES - ADULTS
To provide effective support and planning the Troop 4 Committee meets the second Monday of every month. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

COMMUNICATIONS
There is a collection of necessary Scouting forms maintained on our Web site. Committee meetings are held the last Monday of each month at the same time as the troop meeting; all parents are always welcomed and encouraged to attend.
