Lieutenant (brevet) Kava Dagon - Ship's Counselor

Physical Traits:

Kava's ebony hair is just slightly shorter than her shoulders. She has large brown eyes, giving her a very innocent appearance. She has a vicious-looking scar that runs from the back of her right hand up the length of her arm, just past her shoulder. She walks with a slight limp. Kava typically only looks her superiors in the eyes and appears nervous at personal conversations.

Personal History:

Only minutes after she was born, Kava's mother died attempting to give birth to her twin brother. The baby survived for only a few days, before perishing of some unknown reason. Kava's father, consumed with grief, accepted a position to return to Earth. However during the voyage home the ship that the family was on was attacked by pirates. Kava's sister was killed, but the pirates took Kava, her older brother and father to be slaves. Having lost two children and his beloved wife, Kava's father was unable to carry on; he died shortly after being transferred to the pirate ship. Damon, Kava's 15 yr old brother, swore to protect his baby sister and to get them to Earth. Fortunately the children were sold to a Ferengi trader who happened to deal with Starfleet every month. Damon was able to send a message to his half-brother, a starfleet officer. Within a month the two children were "bought" back.

Kava spent the rest of her childhood growing up in a small town outside of San Franciso, her two brothers doing a remarkable job of raising her. It was learned early on that Kava had an amazing capacity for learning, and by the age of 10 she finished high school. She was the youngest person in the history of her town to graduate. She attended UCLA, and within 6 years, Kava had earned 2 Bachelor degrees, 1 Master's Degree and received an honorary Ph.D. Only 200 students in the history of the school had surpassed her academic prowess. Despite her amazing mind and ability to apply her knowledge, Kava has never dated and has only had a handful of friends.

She was unable to complete her Doctoral Dissertation due to severe accident during her final year of school. While researching in an old library, the building caved in, and Kava dropped 3 floors. When she was found 2 days later, her left leg was almost completely turned. Her right arm and part of her back was bloody (from scraping against something during the fall) and she was unconscious. It was doubtful that she would survive, and she was comatose for several weeks. When she finally did wake up, she endured months of extensive therapy. Her graduate advisor worked with the university, and Kava was given an honorary PhD. Not being able to officially finish her doctorate work is still a sore topic for her.

Starfleet was more than happy to accept Kava when she was 16. For the first time in her life, she did not fly through her courses. She did what was expected of her, and devoted her new-found spare time to developing some interesting scientific theories. During her time on the USS Tiger-Eye, Kava became involved for a very brief period of time with the XO. His death and then the appearance of a man claiming to be him only 20 yrs younger unnerved Kava, and she found it hard to stay on the ship. She accepted a transfer to Starbase 111 in an attempt to put the strange events behind her. While spending a few months on the Starbase, Kava realized that she wasn't feeling challenged enough just working on her theories and experiments. She decided to go through Starfleet Medical as well as working on behavioral medicine.

Psychological Profile:

Kava tends to keep to herself, rather by necessity than desire. She worries that most people will be unable to relate to her, and thus shun her. However, the time she spent learning medicine and counselling has helped Kava to be slightly more social, but she is still quite shy. She has a very guilty passion of reading romantic stories. Kava would love nothing more than to get married and have a family, and while never admitting it Kava would give up her Starfleet career without qualm to be happily married. After all the trials in her life, she is very determined. Surprisingly, she is also an optimist. She does have a big fear of free-falling, but even the idea of short falls makes her upset. Kava also despises those who look view disabled people as weaklings.
