What Is AquaMira?

AquaMira is a water treatment system that is manufactured by McNett Coporation. You can visit their website (and see their research) at www.mcnett.com.

AquaMira has two parts to it--Part A is Chlorine Dioxide, and Part B is Phosphoric Acid. McNett likes to claim there is no chlorine in chlorine dioxide and we feel this is misleading to the consumer. They are trying to avoid a tough question rather than educate people, and this seems a bit dishonest to us. There IS chlorine in chlorine dioxide--just not free chlorine. McNett is taking advantage of confusing definitions (just think back to the Clinton scandals...). Chlorine can refer to a solution of free chlorine, or it can refer to a chlorine atom. Chlorine atoms are certainly present in AquaMira. Chlorine dioxide is made of one atom of Chlorine and two atoms of oxygen. This does not react even close to the same way free chlorine does, but it's a tad misleading to say there is no chlorine present.
To use AquaMira, you mix parts A and B in a cap, wait five minutes, then pour this into your water. The Phosphoric acid reacts with the Chlorine dioxide to release oxygen, which kills things. You have to mix enough AquaMira to treat your entire container of water in one go--no multiple treatments. McNett claims one package of AquaMira treats 30 gallons of water. (One package costs about $12-$14).
Once the AquaMira is added, you must wait 15 minutes for the water to be purified, and McNett recommends waiting 30 minutes or more and using twice as much AquaMira to treat cold water or sources where Cryptosporidium is suspected. They recommend turbid water be pre-filtered with a carbon filter before treatment (how convenient--McNett also makes the AquaMira water bottle with a carbon filter). Extreme heat is reported to reduce the effectiveness of AquaMira.
Nothing will add as much bad taste to your water as iodine, but AquaMira does leave a taste. Everyone is different, but some complain of a chlorine taste (much like tap water in big cities) and some complain of a chalky taste. This gets worse the more AquaMira you have to add. AquaMira weighs 3.41 oz including the plastic case it comes in, both bottles of solution, and its mixing cup.
