Happy Birthday Daisy and Daney!
By Marie E. Roach
(A Dukes of Hazzard Fan fic)
Enos looked at the clock as he was licking the envelopes of
the invitations. He figured he could save some time by getting the cards ready
to be sent out while he was waiting for his shift to end. Saturday March 1st
was Daney and Daisy Duke's birthdays. This year the boys, Enos, and Cooter were
going to throw a big shindig for Daisy and Daney. Enos looked at the clock. It
was quarter till five, at five he got off of work. He had to go to Capitol City
to get some of the party supplies.
Ya see folks,
this year the boys wanted to go all out for their girls. Luke and Bo had
realized that lately Daney and Daisy had been doing a lot for the farm. So the
boys thought it would be a cool birthday treat if they could through a big
birthday party. They got Cooter and Enos in on the idea. Cooter's job was to
get the refreshments. Bo and Luke were in charge of organizing the party,
getting the food, and entertainment. Enos was in charge of holding the party at
his place and getting the place ready. Bo gave Enos the guest list so he could
get the invitations ready because Enos had the best penmanship.
The Deputy gathered up the envelopes and got his jacket
and keys. He went to the Sheriff's office door and knocked on it.
"C’mon,'" the masculine voice inside echoed.
The deputy opened the door and popped his head in.
"Howdy Sheriff, I got somethin' for ya." He walked into the office
and handed him the small white envelope.
"What's this?" Rosco asked.
"It's an invite. Sheriff, to Daney and Daisy's
birthday party!" Enos smiled.
"Oh. Well, when is it?"
"Seven thirty p.m. at my place." The deputy
grinned anxiously, "Everyone in Hazzard, suppose to be there."
"Ok. How's yer sister doing up there in the Yankee
states?"
"She's doin' good. She says it's cold up there. She
says that Hazzard spoiled 'er."
Rosco chuckled and leaned back in his chair. "Well,
tell 'er I said to take care."
"I will Sheriff." Enos smiled brightly and with
that he left.
The boys were
getting things around for the party as Daney and Daisy were at work. Jesse was
busy collecting eggs from the hen house, when he heard talking in the barn.
The Duke patriarch came up to the wooden sliding barn door
and looked in.
"If we invite a hundred people, we would probably
need two and thirty hundred sandwiches. That's two sandwiches a piece
right?" Bo asked.
"Bo! Not everyone's gonna eat two sandwiches. Side's
how ya get two- thirty?" Luke stated.
"Well, Cletus Hogg, Moss, and Ernie Ledbetter will
eat at least ten a piece so there's yer thirty."
Luke shook his head.
"Well, Mr. Genius, did ya find out where we're gonna
get the meat at?" Bo asked.
"Well, since we all chipped in fifty bucks a piece…
we have two fifty."
"Two fifty? You and me is a hundred and Enos and
Cooter is another hundred. Where'd ya get the extra fifty?"
"I robbed a bank."
"C’mon, Luke. Tell me where'd ya get it?"
"A friend wants to help out but she can't. So she
just gave us some money for the supplies ok." Luke stated, a little frustrated with Bo's noisiness.
"Wow, I didn't know Daisy and Daney had so many
friends." Bo kidded.
Just then the Duke patriarch came in behind the boys with
a fifty-dollar bill in hand. "Here, this is for Daisy and Daney's
party."
"Uncle Jesse? How'd ya know…we were planning a
party?" Bo asked.
"That's all you boys been talking 'bout when the
girls ain't here is the party. Now, I wanna help ya out and I'm giving ya
fifty, so now ya got three hundred."
"Well, that will definitely help us out. Ok, the meat
is gonna cost us at least a hundred." Luke said figuring the food up.
"No it won't." Jesse insisted.
"Why?" the boys asked.
"I just sent a steer to the slaughter house for meat
and you boys can use that. Plus, if you boys go fishin' for crawdads I'll make
my crawdad bisque. I'll help ya with the food. Don't you worry 'bout that. Now,
where ya havin’ this big shindig?" Jesse asked.
"Enos has that big house that he got from his Aunt
Kate when him and Val were thinkin' 'bout living together. He said we could
have it at his place. It's away from the farm a ways and the girls would never
suspect." Luke declared.
"Where ya gettin’ the drinks from?" Jesse asked.
“Uh, gonna go buy some soda and a…” Bo coughed. “Keg.”
Jesse frowned. He expected there to be alcohol but he was
hoping that they would ask him for some moonshine. When it come
to a party like this for Jesse's girls, he wanted to help out anyway he could.
"Uncle Jesse, we weren't expectin' yer help on this.
That's why we told Cooter to get a keg." Luke answered.
"Does he got it yet?" Jesse asked.
"Nope, but he's going this afternoon." Bo said.
"Tell him to cancel and I'll have some shine for ya.
Just get some soadie pop so that way ya have somethin' else to drink ‘sides
liquor," Jesse replied. "Now, ya got any entertainment?"
"Well, Enos has some tapes and records he was gonna
play on his big stereo that he got from Val for Christmas. Plus we got some
tapes and records too, and Bo has his guitar. We thought about playing some
songs and stuff, but really we got…" Luke explained but was cut off by his
uncle.
"Nuttin'!" Jesse stated.
"Yep," the boys agreed in unison.
"MMmmmm, did ya think about gettin’ that band of you
boys's together? You could do that."
"Could." Luke said.
"Hey, uh, what should we do for their presents?"
Bo asked.
"You got somethin' picked out yet, Bo?" Luke
replied.
"Nope." Bo answered.
"Uncle Jesse, you got any ideas?" Luke asked.
"Well, I've been working on somethin’ for those
girls, so my gift is already made. I would think you boys could come up with
something for the girls. What about a new record or some of that new music you
kids listen to?" Jesse suggested.
"That's a thought. Daisy has been wanting that new
tape of Dolly Parton's. Daney listens to that "city" stuff every once
in a while. Bo, why don't you sneak into the girls’ room and see if you can see
what records they got." Luke stated as he snapped his fingers. "Hey,
Uncle Jesse what did you get the girls? You never did say."
"That's a secret." Jesse smiled.
Enos went with
Cooter that night to get soadie pop and decorations for the party. They took
Enos’s old station wagon.
"You all excited about this party, Cooter? I sure
am!" Enos exclaimed in glee.
"Yep, those gals won't know what hit 'em. It's gonna be one heck of a blast." Cooter replied
relaxing in the passenger seat.
"How come the boys canceled getting the keg?"
Enos asked.
Cooter knew this was going to be coming and quickly
answered. "Uh… cause of Lent. Dukes don't have store boughten alchol
durin' Lent."
"Oh, ok. Well, what did ya get the girls for their
Birthday?" Enos asked.
"I got 'em both a free oil change by yer's truly and
I'm gonna get a bottle of some snazzy French perfume Nancy Lou told me was
pretty good." Cooter paused. "What you are getting 'em?"
"Oh, well my present is coming. I gotta pick it up at
the airport Friday night." Enos smiled.
"Pick it up at the airport? Enos you didn't get the
girls one of them exotic dancers now did ya? Cause that just don't seem yer
type?" Cooter asked with a wry grin.
"No!" Enos squealed. "I got 'em a…."
Now you think
we're gonna let the surprise out of the bag? NAH! I'm gonna keep ya guessin'!
"OH! The girls sure will like that!" Cooter
replied. "Boy, I can't wait!"
"Me neither! I'll be so happy when that party comes!
Hee! I just can't wait to see the look on Daisy's face!" Enos’s smile
brightened.
It’s now Friday
night and the Duke boys, Cooter and Enos were at the Boar's Nest. They’re
discussing the final touches on the party. The girls had the early shift today
and have it tomorrow. So that's why the guys are at the Nest.
"You two get the soda?" Luke asked.
"Sure did!" Cooter smiled. "You get the
other refreshments?"
"Yep, sure did! Jesse made it last night," Bo
replied.
"Bo!" Luke hissed.
The deputy looked at the boys and Cooter. Enos scratched
his head and dismissed what they were talking about.
"Enos, you got everything ready for the party? Did
you get the entertainment?" Luke asked.
"The house is ready but I didn't get the
entertainment." Enos replied.
Just then a tiny blond woman walked through the door. She
had the most angelic southern voice you ever heard. "Goodness gracious,
what's a girl gotta do to get decent directions around here!"
The boys' heads turned and they seen this lady sashay into
the bar. "MISS DOLLY PARTON!"
Now them boys'
prayers have been answered. Now all they gotta do is get her to come to the party
tomorrow night!
Bo spit his beer out on Luke. Luke dumped his beer on the
floor. Cooter was speechless and Enos fainted.
Now how they
gonna ask her to play? Or did their brains all went fishing and won't be back
till Sunday?
Suddenly the door of the Boar's Nest burst open again and
who else appeared but Hazzard's finest.
"Listen here lady! I caught ya double parked out
front there with that big fancy bus of yer’s! So I'm writtin' ya up for a
ticket!" Rosco snapped.
"A ticket! Now sugar, can't we talk this over."
Dolly replied.
"Sure we can talk this over… at The Hazzard County
Jail! Khee!" Rosco smiled as he began to write the ticket out. He saw the
Duke boys over at the table with Enos and Cooter. He then remembered the party.
"Jit, jit… oh, Ms. Parton?"
"Yes?"
"There is a tiny weenie little thing you could do for
me. I'll forget the ticket if you'd make an appearance at a birthday party
tomorrow night?" Rosco asked.
"A Birthday party?! That sounds like fun sugar! When
and where and I'll be there!" Dolly smiled.
"Khee khee!!!" Rosco smiled and then looked at
the Dukes.
Well, Rosco
got's his present for the gals all picked out. The boys better get Enos up and
going cause he has to pick his gift up tonight at the airport.
The boys told
Dolly the details of the party and that she could stay at Rosco's house since
he was the one who invited her to come. Enos was revived and on his way to the
airport to pick up his present. So everything was going according to plan.
The next morning Daney and Daisy got up early and ready
for work. Daney stood in front of the mirror brushing her hair. Daisy was busy
making her bed before she left.
"Shouldn’t have expected anythin’ different this
year, Boss having us work on our birthday like any other year." Daney
commented as she brushed through her long brown hair.
"Yep, Bo and Luke are bein' a pain already this
mornin'. They hogged up the bathroom for the longest time. They whined at me
about making 'em breakfast. They said the eggs were too cold. You think they
would be a little understanding since it is our birthday, but of course they're
just the same ol' Bo and Luke." Daisy sighed.
"Uh huh, what do you think we should do for our
birthday?" Daney asked.
"I don't know. Ya wanna go out on a girls’ night out
if we get off work early?" Daisy asked.
"That does sound fun. Let's see how it goes. If the
Nest is packed like it normally is on Saturdays, I might just wanna come home
and go to bed." Daney replied.
"Yeah, it has been kind of full lately." Daisy
echoed.
The girls headed
to work in Daisy's Jeep DIXIE. The boys were over at Cooter's Garage trying to
think of how they can get the girls to Enos's place.
"We need a distraction or a lure or some sorts." Bo replied as he leaned against the doorway of the shop.
"Well, with Daisy
it would be easier but ya got to lure Daney in too." Luke stated as he
rubbed his hand gently against his chin.
Cooter was on the creeper looking under a vehicle that came in. "Ya know
this would be a whole lot easier to get 'em to Enos's if ya had Val in on the
plan."
"But Val ain't here anymore, Cooter. She's up at the North Pole
practically. Yeah, it'd be easier because Daney would be over to see her in a
heartbeat. Same goes for Val, she'd be at our farm lookin' for Daney the minute
after she gave Enos a hug." Bo replied rolling his eyes. Yeah, I wish she'd go lookin' for me that
way.
"No, I wasn't at the North Pole. I was in Stratton, Ohio. Diggin' up sea
shells in the icy waters of Lake Erie." A female voice answered from
behind Bo and rested her hand on his shoulder.
Bo turned around to see Enos Strate standing there with his twin sister Valerie
Strate. Bo smiled and wrapped his arms around her and gave her a hug and
replied, "VAL!"
The young woman with braids wrapped her arms around him. She then let go when
he did and smiled at the Duke. Her brother just smiled as he watched the scene.
He had an idea that maybe Bo Duke was smitten by his little sister, but he
mainly dismissed the idea. Enos knew how the two of them started becoming
friends right before she left. Bo was heart broken when Val left. So were some
other people in Hazzard.
"Girl ya sure are a sight for sore eyes! Woohooo!" Bo laughed as he
looked at her.
"It's good to see you too again, Bo." Valerie replied, "So
what's the plan? I hear we got a party going on?!"
"Yep, and Val I think you're gonna be the answer to our problems."
Luke replied slyly.
The girls were working at the Nest.
The clock was creeping
up to 6:45 and they got off of work at 7:30. Daney was wiping down the bar.
Daisy was taking some orders with Bobby Joe Ledbetter. Bobby Joe was a cute
little bleach blond. She might have been pretty but her service compared to
Daisy and Daney was lousy. Daney looked out at the customers and noticed that
there was a steady trend of business slowing down. Daisy came up with some
empty mugs for Daney to wash quickly.
"Daisy, do you notice something?" Daney asked.
"Yeah, people are leavin'? I wonder why?" Daisy asked.
Just then Bo and Luke came through the door.
"Hey! Guess what?!" Bo replied gleefully as he approached the bar
with his cousin.
"What?" Daney asked as she wiped out a glass mug.
"Val's home." Bo grinned from ear to ear.
"Really?"
"It's just for a visit. Enos is having a party for her at his place."
Luke smiled.
"Well, that could be the reason everyone is leaving." Daney said.
"Either that or because Bobby Joe keeps spilling the beer on people."
Bo laughed.
"Bo!!!" The girls exclaimed in unison.
"We were hoping you'd come with us and pay her a visit." Luke
suggested.
Daney and Daisy looked at each other. The boys were going to a party for Val
who they only knew for about six months. Where as the boys knew the girls their
whole lives and they didn't even get them a card for their birthday. Like the
boys forgot or something, typical.
"You want us to go with you to a party for someone that we only got to
know for six months. Yet we don't even get a card or a "Happy Birthday
Daisy and Daney" out of you two, and you know us our whole lives!"
Daisy replied sharply.
The boys knew this was coming but they kept to their story. Bo looked at her.
"It's yer birthday?"
"YES! Oh my!!!! I give up!" Daisy said as she threw her hands up in
the air.
Daney looked at the boys. She knew that it was cruel of the boys to forget them
and then go run off to a party for someone who wasn't even their kin. At the
same time it wouldn't be fair to Val if the girls didn't make an appearance
because of the boys, "Yeah, we'll be there. We just ain't comin' with
you!"
"Aww, c’mon. We're sorry we forgot all about it. Tomorrow we'll do
something together. Like go have a picnic with Uncle Jesse and the four of
us." Luke replied.
Daney looked at the clock. It was now 7:25 and Bobby Joe had to run the bar.
Daney looked at Daisy then at the clock.
"Daisy, I think we should pay Miss Strate a visit." Daney said
putting her towel down and noticing the clock turn to 7:29, "Bobby Joe, we
gotta go. Can ya handle things?"
"Yep, no problem!" She smiled and dropped another beer on the floor.
The girls headed to the door. The boys followed them. Daney and Daisy got into
DIXIE. While the boys hopped into the General. Bo started the engine when the
girls were already backing out of the drive.
The boys then heard over the CB. "Last one to Enos Strate's farmhouse is a
rotten egg!" Daisy laughed.
The boys knew they had to get there before the girls did, to tell everyone at
the party.
Well boys, the party is already waiting.
Back at Enos's place the lights were
turned out and everyone was hiding, even Dolly. There was tons of food ready to
be eaten. Jesse's crawdad bisque, sloppy joes and plenty of beverages were all
ready for the party. A table with gifts for the girls sat in the living room
and a cake which Mrs. Rhuebottom made. They had decorations splashed all over
the old house. As everyone waited in the dark for the birthday girls they made
idle chit chat.
Enos was at the front
door against the wall. He peeked out to see the headlights of DIXIE pull into
the drive. He turned to the party
guests. "Kay, y’all quiet down! They're here!" he shouted so only
people in the house could hear.
Daisy looked at Daney as they walked up on onto the porch. "Ya think the
boys were just shuckin' and jivin' us?"
"I don't know. It sure is quiet. We beat the boys here." Daney stated
as the orange charger pulled into the drive.
The boys slide out of the General and ran across the front yard to meet the
girls on the porch.
"Well, ya gonna go in or ya gonna wait till mornin'?" Bo snapped.
Daisy frowned as she opened the door and stepped into the house. The lights
flashed on and there was a big:
"SURPRISE!!!!!" Everyone shouted.
There was a big sign above the cake that read:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAISY AND DANEY!!!!
The girls looked at each other.
Everyone in Hazzard was
there. Uncle Jesse, Rosco, Boss, Lulu, Moss, Cletus Hogg, Mabel Tillingham,
Miz. Tisdale, Mr. and Mrs. Rhuebottom, Doc. Applebee, Enos, Val, Cooter and
many others. Then a blonde lady from the back of the crowd came up with a
microphone in her hand and approached the girls.
"Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday Daisy and
Daney-y... Happy Birthday tooooooo...youuuuu." The county singer sang.
"MS. DOLLY PARTON!!!!!!" the girls exclaimed.
"That's right, Happy Birthday, sugars." She smiled.
The Sheriff smiled and then said to the girls. "Ms. Parton's appearance is
my birthday gift to the both of ya." With that he gave each girl a hug and
a kiss.
The boys grinned as they watched the reaction on the girls' faces.
"Happy birthday, Daisy, Daney." Bo said as he gave each cousin a hug.
"Yeah, Happy birthday." Luke said as he gave each one a hug after Bo.
The Strate twins then walked up to the Duke girls. Val and Daney threw their
arms around one another as the friends were reunited again. Enos came up to
Daisy and pulled out a bunch of red roses and a little black and white kitten.
"Happy Birthday, Daisy."
"OH!!! Enos!" Daisy smiled as she looked at the roses and the kitten.
"He's sooo cute and the roses,” She took a whiff of the flowers. “Smell so
sweet.”
"The kitten's from Val and the roses are from me," Enos blushed.
Val turned to her friend Daney. "Enos and I got you something as
well."
"Val, ya shouldn't have." Daney replied.
"No, we wanted too. So don't argue with me. I think we done enough of that
in the past." Val giggled. The Strate looked at her Duke friend as the
second sister she always wanted, or the friend next door. Val never had a best
friend like Daney before. She had friends in Ohio, but nobody quite like Daney.
The Strate smiled and pulled out an orange and white kitten, then a small
orange colored box, in the shape of a heart with a black and white 01 on the
lid.
"Val, oh, you shouldn't have." Daney smiled as she looked at the
kitten and box.
"The box and what's inside is from me. The kitten is from Enos."
Valerie smiled as she handed Daney the little squirming kitten and the tiny
box.
Daney took the kitten and gently hugged the creature. Then set him down so she
could look at the box. She slid open the lid and looked inside. There in the
small hollowed out hole was a necklace. It was a sliver and glass beaded
necklace. In the center of the necklace was some little letter beads that
spelled out the following:
I ♥ 01
Daney looked at her
friend and smiled. She couldn't speak she was so moved at her friend's gesture.
"I made it myself." Val replied. "I wanted you to have it,
because you are a Duke and the General is your icon."
Daney gave Val a hug.
The boys then gave Daney and Daisy their
presents, which were some new tapes. Jesse gave the girls his present. A desk
and chair for their room. Both pieces of furniture were hand crafted by their
uncle's own hands. The pieces were crafted out of the finest Black Walnut wood.
After the girls opened all their gifts, they went and partied with the rest of
Hazzard. The party was a blast. It lasted till well into the night and folks
talked about it for days.
