Dreamworker will always hold a special place in my heart, because it's the first episode I actually taped. I missed the first ten minutes of it, but I must have watched that episode 100 times in the following week!
If memory serves me correctly, Xena says "Gabrielle" for the first time in this episode...and she says it a BUNCH of times. Plus...she has a lot of difficulty pronouncing it...usually it comes out like "Gabriel." I like the whole first scene in which Xena and Gabs discuss the dangers of carrying a sword. Xena comments that people are too quick to draw their swords. Then what does she do immediately when approached by the group of men? Draw her sword, of course! Note as she goes to get the knife she has thrown into the ground by the rock...her foot slides and she (the stunt double, I'd assume), almost went down completely! The whole breast dagger scene is hysterical! Gabrielle has got to work on her nonchalant expressions...Xena wasn't buying and neither was I! When Xena has the shopkeeper up against the wall, interrogating him...I love the way her eyes look! I thought she looked extra-good in this whole episode, but that moment stands out in my mind. Elkton mentions the "dream god brothers" and at the end of the episode says there are three of them. Who are the other two? Why don't we see or hear about them? What's up with Xena's outfit in the dreamscape? Was she wearing robes because of her association with Chin? Love Gabbers' "Look at these hips!" when trying to convince Manos she wouldn't make a good bride. It's interesting she gets the first two bad guys to kill each other by exhibiting cold symptoms...first a cough, then a sneeze. I hate to admit it, but I like the little sleep noises Xena makes while she's unconscious. Don't know why...I just do! Gabrielle's sense of humor keeps a'rollin..."I don't suppose you want my breakfast order?" she asks Manos when he enters her cell. How did Elkton get Xena outside while she was unconscious? Or did I just imagine when she went under, she was inside a structure? I like the way Gabs creates her own staff by knocking the head off the spear she is given...nice prelude! Okay...I just don't get the part where Xena strains real hard (I will NOT say what it looked like she was doing), and Terman and the other bad guy run away backward. What did she do, WILL them out of there? The brown-eyed Xena freaks with my head! Whoa! It changes Lucy's looks totally...and somehow makes her look more evil. But even the evil Xena has trouble with her accent..."Every spark and noble quality that made you a great leadah" does NOT come out with a Midwest American accent! When Xena finally breaks through the dream passage, Gabs responds immediately by hitting the bad guy...great reaction! And to this day, I get a real thrill out of the Warrior Princess music! When Xena claps Gabs' s arm, making sure she's okay, it strikes me that is the first spontaneous touch I've seen Xena give Gabs. I love the final scene! Nice touch using the water as a metaphor for Xena's life! That scene was one of the ones that truly got me hooked on the show! And the ribbing at the end..."I was just saying it for your benefit" made it even better!Let’s see what Gary has to say about this one:
This episode opens up with Gabby
using Xena’s sword as a wood- cutter. We
think she is talking tough to
someone, but she just swings the sword and
gets it stuck in a stump. Xena
makes fun of her, and Gabby wants Xena to
teach her how to use it as a
weapon, but Xena says no.
Xena oddly says don’t be too quick
to go for your sword. Her instructions:
run, surrender, then run; let them
fight each other, then run, finally talk
your way out of it.
Note: why should an evil person
fight someone else when you’re the prey?
Xena advises wisdom over weapons.
Once you kill, it changes
everything…everything.
Xena hears a noise. It is a bunch
of thugs intent on robbing the girls. She
IMMEDIATELY draws her sword
and tells them to give up, so I guess she has
to use wisdom sometime later.
The thugs attack, and when Xena has
her sword knocked from her grip, Gabby
picks it up and gives a Xena-like
war-cry, making the thugs look her way.
One says to attack the little one…she
has a sword. I did not believe they
would just leave unarmed people
alone.
Xena kills the leader with her
dagger and the girls go to the town.
A priest of Morpheus watches the
action and is glad Gabby did not kill. She
will be Morp’s bride after she
loses her blood innocence.
Xena scolds Gabby for trying to
help her. She does not ever want her help.
Xena goes to a store for a
whetstone and Gabby says she is going shopping
for some salt pork. She goes,
however, to a weapons shop to look around.
She sees a heavy sword, and then
says she needs something more petite. The
owner holds up a dagger with two
handles and calls it a “breast dagger.”
Gabby says, ‘how cute!” and loves
it. The owner shows her how it is
carried…down the front of her
blouse. She warned him not to get too cute,
tho.
In the other store, Xena sees a
blind man named Elkton, who was once a
Mystic, one of Morph’s priests. Now
he is reviled by everyone because once a
year at Solstice, the bad priests
take a young girl and make her the bride
of Morph…she has to die
first.
Xena buys a halter for Elkton’s
horse, since the storekeeper will not sell
anything to him. Outside, Gabby
walks over to Xena with her chest puffed
out. Xena says ‘you look….BIGGER.”
Gabby says it is the mountain air, and
then the dagger falls through her
dress to the ground. Xena keeps it and
says that Gabby should not have a
weapon.
Xena puts it down her own cleavage,
and Gabby says that “it’s not that your
own breasts aren’t dangerous
enough…it’s a JOKE…you can laugh.”
Then Morph’s thugs attack. Xena
tells Gabby to get on the horse, and when
the fighting is over, Gabby is
gone---kidnapped.
Xena forces the merchant to tell
her where the fortress is where Gabby was
taken. He says it is too far, and
suggests that Elkton can help her.
At the fort, Gabby is told she must
prove herself worthy…she must pass three
tests. She is dressed in a truly
beautiful dress with cutout shoulders, plus
some nice decorations. It is a long
dress, and her hair looks great.
Elkton senses Xena’s presence and
thanks her for the halter. She tells him
about Gabby and he says that it
will take too long for Xena to get
there…Gabby will have died by then.
Xena can get there in a dream passage.
He tells her about the Mystics from
before and how it has been corrupted. He
has Xena drink something, has her
lie down, and splashes encama oil on her.
This stuff stops her body from
dying in her dream vision. He says everything
is in her own mind…her dream is HER
dream and she can make it any way she
wants. As she goes under, Elkton
says he will protect her body.
Xena must defeat Morph in her own
mind.
In a gauzy scene with
burlap-looking hangings, Xena runs down a passage. She
sees a lot of the soldiers she used
to know in battle. She wears really nice
clothes and has her hair pulled
back. The soldiers want her to stay, but she
denies that she is a killer
anymore.
She now sees a lot of her victims.
She is given a sword to kill them again,
but she denies she is a killer and
drops the sword, breaking it. The crowd
disappears. Morph is using Xena’s
past to slow her down.
The priest knows Xena is there and
sends his men to kill her and Elkton.
Gabby is given a sword and has to
go thru a cloth tunnel. There are two men
who will kill her unless she kills
them first. Gabby gets them to kill each
other by being in the middle, then
ducking as they stab with their swords.
She is taken back to her room.
She now dreams. In her dream is
Xena, and Xena says their dreams are
overlapping. Xena wants proof of it
being Gabby, so Gabby says she had six
toes on her right foot as a baby,
but it’s gone now. Xena says, “It must be
you!”
Xena tells her not to kill or she
will be killed herself.
Gabby awakens to see the guards and
says, “I don’t suppose you’re here to
take my breakfast order.” She is
given another sword and sent out again. She
had a chance to kill the priest
when she got his dagger, but she can’t do
it. This time she is at a fire pit,
and she tosses the sword down it. She is
attacked by three men, and she gets
them to allow the best fighter to attack
her first. One is killed in the
fire, and the second kills the third. The
last guy grabs Gabby after throwing
his dagger at her. It sticks in a
volcanic rock. As he goes to throw
Gabby into the fire, the dagger loosens
up and it kills him.
Gabby was really cute in her
expressions and appearance when she was getting
the thugs to decide who was the
best fighter. She didn’t panic, but thought
it through.
He eyes looked dark in the lighting
of the scene.
Thr priest tells her this time she
has to kill or she will die for sure.
Xena is close…she is near the door
to the fort. She sees herself with brown
eyes…the Dark Xena, who taunts her
and says Xena can never change for the
better. “I am YOU!”
Dark Xena says Xena needs the key
to get inside. She says Xena loves battle,
the killing, the REAL you. She says
Xena is weak without her and stomps Xena
a lot. Xena realizes that she gets
to kill her Dark Half. She says, “you’re
the key, and I control YOU!”
Gabby is trapped in a wooden
triangular cage with spikes forcing her down
the trough. A sword lies on the
floor at the end with a thug ready to kill
her.
Xena swings her Dark Half against
the door and the door explodes. Xena jumps
thru and is in her regular battle
gear. Gabby tosses the sword to Xena who
kills a lot of bad guys. The priest
wanted his men to kill Xena and Gabby at
once. Xena uses the breast dagger
to kill the last thug. Gabby punches the
priest and knocks him out cold.
“Punching is all right?”
“I’m impressed!”
At the end, Elkton regains his
sight and is again a Mystic, as a good one
should be. They will now sacrifice
corn instead of girls. He wishes Xena
sweet dreams.
One of the best endings of the six
years is the following:
Xena and Gabby are sitting near a
river. Gabby says she came close to
killing and it bothers her.
Xena says for Gabby to look at the
water. She throws a stone in it and makes
ripples. She was like that
once…calm, but then bad things happened in her
life. Gabby says if they wait long
enough, the water will be calm again, but
Xena says the stone is still there
and the river will always be changed.
The camera angles and music were
the best and I loved it. Xena and Gabby
walk to Argo and Xena tries to make
Gabby think she didn’t really mean what
she said, but she looks back
wistfully at the water, knowing she was right.
This one scene made me love Xena
and the show.
