How Curious George Began

Curious George was originally created in Paris when Margret and H.A. Rey wrote their first children's book entitled "Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys" in which one of the nine was George. George was introduced in America in 1941 with his first printing company, Houghton Mifflin Company.

About Margret and H.A. Rey

Margret Elizabeth Rey was born May 16, 1906, in Hamburg, Germany. After working as a professional photographer in Berlin and London, Margret went to Rio de Janiero in 1935. There she became acquainted with H.A. Rey and created a small advertising business. The Reys married in Rio de Janiero in 1935. The Reys arrived in New York City in October of 1940. Houghton Miffin published the first Curious George book in 1941. Along with the original Curious George book, six more followed about Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat. Curious George books written by the Reys are: Curious George, Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Gets a Medal, Curious George Goes to the Hospital, Curious George Learns the Alphabet, Curious George Rides a Bike, and Curious George Takes a Job. Several Curious George books have been published posthumously such as "Curious George and the Chocolate Factory." (One of my favorites!) H.A. Rey died in 1977 and Margret Rey died 1996.
