SANGUINETTI
Lizzie McInnerney lived in the house owned by Miss Mary
Botto. She married Mr. John Henry Sanguinetti in the Botto house. They lived
there with Mr. & Mrs. Charles Beard until their son, John Henry Sanguinetti,
Jr. was born in 1892. Lizzie died in childbirth, and gave her son to Dora Beard
and said she wanted her to raise him. Dora did this until he was two years old.
His father’s sisters, Misses Lizzie, Annie, Dehlia and Lena Sanguinetti, lived
in Vicksburg, MS, and asked Dora to let Johnny visit them there, so she did,
and they brought him back. Then later, they asked for him for a second visit,
and Dora let him go again, after which they did not bring him back. Dora did
nothing about it. She said they were his aunts, as well as she was, and she had
done a wonderful deed of raising him past his second year, a most troublesome
age.
Lizzie was Dora’s half sister. They had the same mother,
but different fathers. Dora’s father, Lizzie’s stepfather, was named Tieryney,
He fell off a boat and drowned.
Lizzie, Johnny’s mother, was the "pink of
perfection" and considered the best dressed woman in Natchez at the time
of her young ladyhood. She was highly educated, and quite accomplished. One
accomplishment was her being able to play the piano. She sewed beautifully and
made all of Johnny’s layette, but he was such a big baby they had to purchase
other things.
Johnny Sanguinetti married Doris Couillard. They had nine
children and lived in Liberty Hall after Doris’ parents died.

PROFILET, QUEGLES, COUILLARD
During
the great depression of 1837-47, Eli Montgomery, the well known banker and
financier, sold Liberty Hall “in pursuance with the law”, after advertising it
in Marshalk’s famous Natchez Courier and Journal. the purchaser was Sidney
Arnaud Lacoste, one of several French brothers, who held a prominent place in
antebellum Natchez. According to a family record: “Jean Charles Arnaud Lacoste
was born on a ship (enroute to America) in 1807; Louis Adolphe Arnaud Lacoste
was born in New York in 1810 and Auguste Sidney Arnaud Lacoste was also born in
New York in 1814.”
Sidney
probably purchased Liberty Hall in trust for his brother, Adolphe A. Lacoste,
who arrived in Natchez in 1832 by way of New York and Charleston. Tradition
says, he was returning to America from France, where he had been educated in
the Continental manner. Four years later, Adolphe married Miss Mary Elizabeth
Clay at Natchez and brought her to Liberty Hall, as his bride. She was the
second child of Curtis Clay and his wife Elizabeth Lohra of Philadelphia, Pa.
Walles’ diary makes mention of this Mr. Clay as a scholarly man whom he met in
Philadelphia. Mrs. Clay was a daughter of Peter Lohra, a distinguished American
Patriot, who served as secretary for the commission that sat in Philadelphia in
1795. It settled the conflicting claims between the United States and Spain and
resulted in the Treaty of San Lorenzo. At this time parallel 31 south was
designated as the southern boundary of the infant United States. The
MS-Louisiana line is a part of this early edge of America.
The
Lacoste-Clay marriage was a happy one, but all too brief. Adolphe, who had
everything to live for; such as love, friendship and success was doomed to die
before his thirtieth birthday. He was a gay, attractive man with all the
"savior vivre" of a handsome and aristocratic Frenchman. One of the
most prized family keepsakes is a formal invitation to the Hussar’s Ball, sent
him with a hand written card of admittance. These functions were elegant and
stately affairs sponsored by a military company of that name. It was composed
of aristocratic young men who were the real arbiters of local fashion and
social customs. A bid to one of these balls was almost like a court
presentation.
How
strange it seems that Adolphe Lacoste was to die before the year closed and
Parker’s Exchange, the most famous hotel of its day, and the scene of this
splendid ball, was destined to become a pile of rubble in the great tornado of
May 7, 1840. Many were pinned beneath its ruins.
Adolphe
A. Lacoste was only twenty-nine, when death claimed him on October 22, 1839. He
probably fell a victim to Yellow fever or some other epidemic disease. His
heart-broken widow was left with two small children, John Arnaud Lacoste and
Adolphina. The latter died in childhood, but John lived to become a member of
the Adams Light Guard and marched to way in 1861.
A short
time later, young Lacoste died at Camp Centerville, Va. Among his deeply
grieved buddies, who drafted resolutions of respect and sorrow were such well
known Natchez men as Sergeants Coffin and Mackie, Corporal Perrault and
Privates Abbott and Russell.
The
death of her only son was an overwhelming blow to the widowed mother, whose
only comfort lay in the fact that several of her sisters had married and
settled in Natchez. Some years later, Mrs. Lacoste made a will leaving her
valuable rental property Under-the-Hill to her sisters: Mrs. Anna B. Heysham,
Mrs. Ellen B. Sims (wife of Mr. John Sims) and Mrs. Eliza B. Hutchinson. To
Mrs. Sims, she left the residence on Pine Street, Liberty Hall, saying: “I
bequeath same to my sister, Mrs. Ellen B. Sims, during her life time and at her
death, to my niece, Eliza F. Profilet, wife of Dr. Louis Emile Profilet, her
heirs and assigns." The lovely furnishings, not otherwise devised went with
the house; which eventually passed on to the Profilets.
Dr.
Profilet was one of the leading physicians in this part of the state. He also
belonged to a family long identified with the cultural progress of this region.
He was a son of Louis Emile Gustave Profilet, a native of France, who on
February 1, 1830 was married to Miss Melanie Frances Catherine Quegles, a
daughter of Josephine Quegles, a native of Spain, and his wife, Melanie Adam.
One
writer said: "A favorite general of Napoleon’s came to Natchez to stay as
a guest of Emile Profilet Esq., being a friend of the Profilet family.” He
failed to give the general’s name, and our information on Napoleon’s army is
rather hazy, but we do know that Prince Murat, Napoleon’s nephew, visited the
Profilets and suspect that the general accompanied him as sort of a bodyguard.
From Natchez, the prince went to Baton Rouge, where a chief tourist attraction
is the house where Prince Murat once stopped.
For
years, Liberty Hall was the scene of much gracious entertaining. Dr. Profilet
was a gallant and brilliant gentleman who graduated from Yale with the class of
1857. His yearbook, handed down to a grandson, shows that the college youth of
that era was old before his time. Nearly all wore exaggerated bowties, mustaches,
side burns, Horace Greely whiskers and sleek bobbed haircuts. Each seemed
weighted down with the grave responsibilities of life and expressed lofty
sentiments and good wishes in Greek, Latin or high flown English.
One
classmate inferred that he had revised his opinion of the haughty South, after
knowing his good friend Profilet, and now entertained kindly, views toward this
maligned section, but alas too few had such understanding. These same
classmates were destined to meet on many a bloody field as foes. Dr. Profilet
served as a surgeon with the Confederacy and toward the latter part of the war
was in charge of a hospital for paroled and exchanged prisoners. A letter of
commendation, written him at this time still exists.
After
the fall of the Confederacy, Dr. Profilet became health officer for Adams
County in MS, a place he filled with efficiency for many years. He was
constantly exposed to epidemic diseases such as yellow fever, cholera, and
small pox, and met these hazards with the fearlessness and devotion to duty
that he had shown. He was injured in a runaway horse and buggy accident on one
of his professional calls and was crippled for the rest of his life.
Following
the deaths of Dr. and Mrs. Profilet, the old home passed to their eldest
daughter, party by inheritance and partly by purchase. In 1890, as Miss Mary
Lacoste Profilet, she became the bride of Mr. James G. Couillard. The marriage
took place in St. Mary’s Cathedral.
The
Couillard family migrated from France to Quebec, Canada in the late 1700’s. The
name Couillard first appeared in MS history in 1739, when a young French
officer with troops under Mons de Nouaille came up the river in a campaign
against the Chickasaws. He kept a journal and after telling of camping beneath
the Natchez Fort (Natchez-Under-the Hill) he said: “On Thursday, the first day
of October, 1739, we set out an hour before day and dined at Couillard’s Swamp,
with the expectations of meeting friendly Indians hunting buffalo, whence we
proceeded to encamp two leagues further on a bank to starboard”. From this, it
is gathered that the first Couillard was a fur trader and, like John Jacob
Astor, the First, had a station and agency up the river from Natchez, where he
bought Buffalo skins from the natives.
PROFILET
Louis Emile Profilet came to Natchez from France in the
early 1800s. He was a diamond merchant and founded an elegant jewelry store
with a wide spread reputation. Audubon lived in the rear of his house on
Washington Street. He usually painted pictures of nature only but as a gift to
Mr. Profilet he painted a picture of the jewelry store. This painting now hangs
in a museum somewhere up north.
Dr. Louis Emile Profilet, his son, was married to a Miss
Eliza Sims and after the war lived in Natchez. They had several sons and
daughters. They were Louis Emile Profilet, William Profilet, Charles Arnaud
Profilet and Mary Lacoste Profilet.
Louis Emile Profilet married and moved to Cairo, Illinois.
He had a large family and a number of descendants, and all of his children had
large families.
William Profilet married and moved to Batesville, MS. He
had one son, William S. Profilet and I think several daughters. His son,
William Profilet, lived in Jackson, MS and has one son.
Charles Arnaud Profilet married and moved to Cairo,
Illinois. They had no children.
Mary Lacoste Profilet married James Gilbert Couillard and they had the following children: Joseph Couillard, who died at the age of eleven or twelve years; Natalie Couillard, who first married John Scruggs and had five children by him. John Scruggs died and Natalie married William K. Luscombe, an Englishman. James Gilbert Couillard, who died in 1937; Doris Couillard, who married John H. Sanguinetti and they had nine children. Most of them live in Natchez with large families. Nellie married Joe Snyder and had one son. Louis Emile Profilet Couillard married Ruby Holloway and they had a son and a daughter. Lt. John
Couillard was a native of France and born in
the year 1655. Early in life he entered
into the Marine Service and
subsequently enlisted on board a
French frigate which, in one of the
wars of the 17th 
century
between France and England, had an
engagement with an English frigate along the coast of America during which the two ships were brought into immediate
contact by grapplings for the purpose of boarding. The station of young Couillard was that of Captain of the Main Top, and while the two frigates were thus
boarded together, he passed from the
French ship to the English vessel. The frigates
soon separated
without capture on either
side leaving Couillard prisoner on board the English frigate,
which soon put
into Boston Harbor, where Couillard
was discharged. After the peace was
declared and the prisoners freed, Couillard proceeded to Cape Ann where
he met a young woman (Isabellah Colwell), married, had a family of children, and resided for a number of years.
From Cape Ann he emigrated with 
his family to the Kennebec region of Maine, where previously, in 1721, he
had purchased land at Jones Eddy (now called Fishers Eddy) on Arrowsic Island, then part of Georgetown. He built a house and 
continued
to reside on his farm, employing himself in husbandry and fishing until a
disease took him in 
the year
1770, at the age of 115 years. There is some
question as to the date of John's
death. Roger 
Whiting, a descendant of John's, reports that a deed made out on July 1, 1753 between John and his son
Charles, partially clarifies the
question. Charles was given his
father's land provided that he would care for John and his then wife, Sarah (Rankin), until
they died. Charles later sold
this property on July 8, 1764. Roger believes
this would indicate that both John and
Sarah probably had died by this
date.

John
Augustus Couillard came down from Maine to Louisiana in 1840 and was working
near Waterproof, Louisiana when the Civil War broke out. He departed from New
Orleans and joined the Confederate Army and fought with the South throughout
the War. It was learned later that he fought against one of his brothers in a
battle in Virginia thought to be Bull Run. After the war he came back to
Louisiana and married Ellen Gilbert. Her family had extensive land holdings and
they settled on Maitland Plantation on the Tensas River in Catahoula Parish in
Louisiana. They had five children: Cora, Abbie, Ben, Howell and Gilbert.
James
Gilbert Couillard, the son of Augustus and Ellen Couillard, married Mary
Lacoste Profilet and moved to Natchez. The Couillard family was quite
prosperous during the late 90’s and early 1900s and owned a home in Natchez on
the northeast corner of High and North Union Streets. James Gilbert Couillard
died of pneumonia after a few days of illness when he was thirty seven years
old.
