The
children of
John and Sarah McGehee
Marion McGehee
The first of John and Sarah's children is Marion McGehee. Marion was born in 1836 while the family was still in Illinois. This would indicate that the family did not arrive in Mo intil the latter part of the 1830s. Marion married on December 11, 1854, to Mary E Bowles in Lawrence county Missouri. Lawrence county records indicate there was an Elizabeth M. McGehee who was considered "incapable" of taking care of her affairs and Thomas Bowles was appointed the guardian and curator of her estate. This declaration of her insanity was made in February of 1869, and she was declared sane again in Jan 1870, after her belongings had been sold. All the paper work seemed to be correctly done, so it does not seem that she was taken advantage of. However, there is no reference to her age, who Thomas Bowles was, or who her parents were.

mystery! Can you solve it!?
After Marion were probably the two daughters mentioned above. It is most likely that these two daughters died sometime before 1840.
Then was Alexander, who was born August 4, 1843 in Missouri. There is some speculation as to his birth date due to the fact his sister is listed as being born the same year, however they are not twins. It is probably the way the census dates were calculated. Both the census of 1850 Arkansas and the 1910 Oklahoma census indicates that Alexander was born in 1844.
Alexanders death certificate states that he was born in Springfield Mo, which is in Greene county Mo, next to Lawrence county where his family was living in 1840. Someone from his family stated to a biographical sketch that he was from Lincoln county Tenn. This obviously is not fact, but it probably comes from Alexander stating that his family was from Lincoln county Tennessee.
Alexander served the Confederate States Army and lived to file for a pension. He married Sarah E Tharpe, on March 4th 1867 in Grayson county Texas. It is believed that he lived in Collin county Texas at some point and by the early 1900s was living with his children in the various areas surrounding him.
On the 1910 Census of Ada, Pontotoc county Oklahoma, James is living with a man named Oscar O. Wilson. Mr Wilson was a farmer and Alexander was listed as being 66 years old. There were other McGehees living in the area. There was a James McGehee, age 27, and a Bert McGehee age 22. These were probably Alexander's children. There was however a John McGehee who was age 55, too old to have been Alexanders son, who was living there as well. I have wondered if this was Alexanders brother John Wesley McGehee.
Alexander died in and is buried in Pontotac county Oklahoma.
Zora McGehee
Wife of Rev Bertie McGehee, son of Alexander.
Sidney McGehee
The next child of John and Sarah McGehee was Sidney McGehee. Sidney (a girl) was born in Missouri in 1843 according to census records. Nothing is known of her early years. Even though we know she was in Lawrence county Missouri on Feb 2, 1858 we also know that she married on March 13, 1859 to Richard M. Hartzog in Grayson county Texas. The couple had one child named James Hartzog.
Richard Hartzog had been granted 320 acres by the courts in Grayson county on July 29, 1856 (file #2645). The land was situated in Tarrant County about two 6 and 1/2 miles from Birdville. There were two witnesses to this document, William Quillan and Jonathan Barefoot. The land was later sold to Enoch Jones and James Dumas for the sum of $200.00, however "Conners, the Peters Colony of Texas" in which this information is found states that the land was never patented and the certificate was never approved.
Richard Hartzog died in 1863. We do not know where or how. His wife remarried a man named John Bates. The two were listed in Dallas County Texas in th e 1870 census.
Dwelling #681
Bates, John, 58, SC
Bates, Sidney, 40, MO
Bates, Lavenia, 17, GA
Bates, Napolean, 13, GA
Martha, 12, MO
Hartzog, James, 10, TX
There is nothing else known about Sidney and her family at this time.
Sampson McGehee
Next was Sampson McGehee. Sampson was born in 1846 in Missouri. He shows up as living with his family in Carroll County Arkansas in 1850 but he does not show up on any 1860 census record. Ancestry.com shows the following Military record. McGehee, Sampson - Capt. White's Battery Horse Artillery. Private; (notes: Sampson, Nages 11 Tex. Cav.) - Confederate. And McGee, Sampson; Company C, 11 Texas Cavalry; private; (notes: Magee,Sampson) Confederate. Then just as the war had come to its close we find the following marriage record: McGEHEE, SAMPSON Spouse: PUCKET, DELILAH Marriage Date: 8 Oct 1867 County: Rusk State: TX We find him then on the 1870 census of Grayson county Texas (page 121) in the town of Whitesboro. Sampson and "Delia" as she was listed, had one daughter at the time named Larcena McGehee. I have recently been contacted by a gentleman who is the decendant of Sampson McGehee. He pointed me to the following census record of 1880 Grayson County Texas. McGee, J.W. M W 27 Farmer Born in Mo - - Delilah W F 28 wife Mo; Ind. Miss - Larcena W F 10 daughter Mo Mo Mo - Anna C. W F 8 daughter Mo Mo Mo - Sarah C W F 6 daughter Mo Mo Mo - Zephie May W F 1 Daughter Tx Mo Mo Also living in the house as a boarder was Johnson J.W. M W 24 Boarder Famer Mo The story that I have been told is that Sampson died sometime between 1870 (when he shows on the census) and 1875 or so. Then John Wesley McGehee (listed as J.W. McGee above) married Delilah, Sampson's widow and continued to raise the family. Apparently just after this census was taken in the early 1880s Delilah was bitten by a spider. She was nursing a child - possibly Zephie May, and both she and the baby died. You can follow John Wesley McGehees live in the area below. I am curious about the information on this census concerning the stats of birth. I am curious as to why it lists the kids born in Mo, and the last one born in Texas. As far as I can figure all the kids were born in Texas. font>
Then there was James McGehee. James was born in 1847 in Missouri and was not seen in records until 1866. It was on May 28, 1866 that he married Carintha A. Elder in Grayson county Texas. He and Carintha seemed to move around a lot. His first son was Albert Lee McGehee. Albert was born in 1868 in Texas.
After James McGehee was Martha McGehee. Martha was born in 1849 in Missouri, which tells us that John and Sarah did not move to Carroll countyArkansas until after 1849.
She married Thomas Washington Bogard, April 24, 1866 in Grayson County Texas. In 1870 the family lived in Cooke county Texas. Thomas W Bogard was a Civil war vetran in service of the Confederate army. He applied for a pension in the early 1900s and was listed as a widower.
Their children were Laura B Bogard, and James M Bogard on the 1870 census.
After Martha there was Nancy McGehee. At this time we know nothing about Nancy.
After Nancy there was John Wesley McGehee. By all accounts he was the last child of John and Sarah and was probably born around 1853-1855. Nothing is known about him at this time.
Here is the great great grandson of John McGehee, and his daughter, the great great great granddaughter of John McGehee standing on the courthouse steps in Mt Vernon Mo. From Jane McGehee, Allison Elizabeth McGehee is 7 generations.
