Pic-of-the-Week for December 22, 2002
This is a pic of my sister and my surprise Christmas gift to her. It was taken December 25, 2002.

I told Susan that her surprise gift was probably going to make her upset, so she was understandably apprehensive when opening it. She figured there would be snakes involved.
However, she was wrong. The surprise gift was, in fact, Vivian Vande Velde's The Rumpelstiltskin Problem, wherein the author addresses the unsatisfactory plot of the original "Rumpelstiltskin," as penned by The Grimm Brothers. (Wilhelm & Jakob Grimm, if you must know.)

And why might this upset Susan? Well, she's been writing her own Rumpelstiltskin parodies for the past three years. That's why. (By the way, I highly recommend both my sister's and Vande Velde's versions.)

Pic-of-the-Week for December 15, 2002
This is a pic of my sister's teddy bear. It was taken in the late 90s.
Honeydew has been part of our family for 14 years. Any person glancing through our family photo albums will note that she has been present for our everyday lives and our lives' milestones. It's a little creepy, frankly. She never seems to wear the same outfit twice. And right here, she's clutching an armful of bitter squash.

Honeydew Stats:
DOB: 11/28/88
Hair: pale yellow
Eyes: shiny plastic
Quote: not really applicable

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for December 8, 2002
Deborah, Bookseller @ Borders

Accolades: Master Preferred Reader seller! Now I am just the master of the computer section (AHHH!) which is in order for the first time in the history my Borders store...
Favorite Books: The Giver, anything pertaining to WWII, and I just finished the kids' book Witch Child, which was really good.
Book History: Let's see...worked at Waldenbooks in Texas, transferred up to a store in Denver, and now I am working at a Borders.
When I'm Not Selling Books: Slaving away on a paper and studying for finals in all of my music classes (when I would rather be skiing or boarding), spending too much time working in the recording studio, and trying to be in Germany any chance I get.

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for December 1, 2002
Jeff, Bookseller @ Waldenbooks

People usually like me because I have kind eyes and non-predatory teeth. They see me as approachable, helpful...even knowledgeable.

While this may be the image I project, I don't feel that it's who I really am. On the inside, I'm running my tongue over my canines, preparing for my next conquest. No one sees this, of course. Up front, I'm the straight arrow, the goody-goody, the one who can do no wrong. I'm the charmer, the sweetheart, the after-school special. Like a chameleon, I adapt myself to lure my prey. Those who see me are so seduced by what they want to believe, they don't see the shadow which falls in my wake. Devious, insidious, and rubbing its shadowy hands in glee, my shadow betrays the unseen.

I am cashier. And I have come to take your money.

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for November 24, 2002
Elizabeth, Assistant Manager @ B. Dalton

Accolades: Cult movie actor Bruce Campbell called me a sexy bitch. What more do I need?
Favorite Books: Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Rings, The Seafort Saga, and Until We Have Faces
Book History: Many years as a library volunteer, over a year as a librarian, and over a year as a bookseller!
Coolest Find: The realization that I can choose what my customers read by what I order. BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!!!!!!! All your brain cells are belong to us!!! That and all the bargain videos I can order. I just got the James Bond special for $4.98.

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for November 17, 2002
Nick, Bookseller @ Half-Price Books

Nick is currently avoiding me, which is why he doesn't have a blurb, either. So here's an excerpt from an IM conversation I had with him:

"Even when I am behind the buy counter, sometimes people have to ask if I work there before they will get to their real question. I want to say 'No, I just came back here to price books because it looked like fun...don't tell the actual employees, okay?'"

That's one of my pet peeves, too. If I'm wearing my nametag, doesn't that IMPLY that I'm an employee?

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for November 10, 2002
Lauren, Keyholder @ Waldenbooks

Lauren's blurb was cursed, so it's not here. However, I assure you that Lauren is cool and has probably tripled Waldenbooks' Cool Factor just by working there. At least by that much, anyway.

She also knows how to sing Spider-man's theme song. I actually never knew that he had one. But he does.

Wouldn't it be neat to have a theme song? If I were musically inclined, I'd create one for myself. But I'm not. Phooey.

Bookseller Pic-of-the-Week for November 3, 2002
HooveR, Bargain Book Guru @ Borders

Accolades: 2-time Employee-of-the-Month (in only 8 months!)
Favorite Books: Star Wars novels, Dean Koontz novels, cool deluxe bargain books priced at bargain basement prices...
Book History: 3 years in book retail as of now!
If I Were On The Shelf: I'd be in the Humor section.
Favorite Retort To Customers Who Say "Is It Free? Hyuk!" When Their Purchases Won't Scan: "Actually, there will be an additional charge for my having to enter it manually." (Feel free to use this yourself, fellow booksellers!)

Pic-of-the-Week for October 27, 2002
This is a pic of my friend and host sister Juliane. It was taken October 1999.
I stayed with Juliane's family when I was a foreign exchange student in Germany. Her parents were extremely cool, and I felt really comfortable with Juliane. I guess the teachers did a good job of matching us up!

This is a pic of my friend Christine. It was taken May 1996.
I met Teeny in 7th grade. She is yet another buddy with whom I've weathered years of torturous gym classes. We've learned that walking to Cici's Pizza in Houston's May weather is a bad, bad idea.

This is another pic of my mother's dog. It was taken July 1997.
Pointy Flippo has been around for 7 years, which is absolutely amazing to me. Despite the large number of people who wish to kill her, she still seems to be alive. I just don't know how much longer she can keep that up.

Hey, it's another Cskooler! I've known Debra for about 9 years now. That's almost a decade of suffering through Chinese every Saturday--but Debra is a senior this year. Not much longer to go, right? I have an odd feeling that this will be a year to remember. Go Deb! =)

This is a pic of my friend Brad. It was taken May 2000.

This is a pic of my friend Alice. It was taken May 2000.
Alice is one of those people who you think are really innocent and sweet--but are actually little hellraisers on the inside. Of course, many people are that way...I think we'd all be surprised to see people as they really are. I think a lot of people would be surprised by Alice, though.

Alice Stats:

Pic-of-the-Week for September 1, 2002
This is a pic of my friend Cynthia. It was taken October 1999.

This is a pic of somebody named Jim. It was taken November 1999.
Jim is like a drug. He's always on my mind. When can I see him again? Today? Tomorrow? Every day? Well, the funny thing about him is that I was afraid of corrupting him--but he corrupted me instead. Just wish him a happy 21st.

Jim Stats:
DOB: 08/27/81
Hair: Addicting

This is a pic of my mom when she was younger. It was taken in 1959 or 1960.
My mother is an interesting woman. There's so much about her that I don't know...possibly due to the fact that I'm usually asleep when she's awake. My dad said she once aspired to be a writer. Trust me on this...it explains a lot.

Mommy Stats:

I just got to know T.Mac earlier this year, so we're still strangers. But he's a fellow Californian, sorta...if I was born in Cali, can I still be Californian? Hmm. Well, T.Mac's an art-man; check out his Everyday Life and tell him what you think.

This is a pic of my cousin Tony. It was taken in 1990.
Tony is another member of the Lin clan. He's got to deal with all us crazies, the poor guy. One of the things I like about Tony is that he'll always write back when I write to him. That's a trait that so few possess. Sadly, he's quite a few years older than me, so I don't relate to him very well.

Tony Stats:
DOB: 03/23/75

This is a pic of my former classmate, Kevin. It was taken February 1998.
I think I inadvertently broke Kevin's heart in high school. He's a real sweetie, though, so I doubt that he suffered much from my rejection. Also, it's his birthday this week, but I don't have an e-mail where he can be contacted. Does anyone else know?

I've known Roshan since the good ol' days of 6th grade gym class. Poor Roshan...last July, one of my friends and I tried to drag her fishing at 7 AM. Why? 'Cause it wouldn't be the same without her. Anyway, it's her birthday this week, so you can wish her a good one if you like.

Abeer is one of the sweetest people I know. I met her in 10th grade gym class, and we managed to endure the mile runs every week. Girls' P.E. is hard. Okay, her birthday was actually last week, so you can wish her a belated one if you like.

Allison's going to be a vet someday! If I could be trusted to own pets, I know I'd take them see her...it's not a good idea for me to own pets, though. Allison's still a great friend! It's also her birthday this week, so you can wish her a good one if you like.

This is a pic of my high school Biology teacher. It was taken from the DHS website.
His name is Dr. Donald Winsor. I got my first C average in his class. Once, he told us about the time that he infected his family with diarrhea. Winsor is cool because he doesn't care if you can dissect a frog or not. However, that was one of the few things I could do in his class.

This is a pic of my high school Psych/Economics teacher. It was taken...from the DHS website.
His name is Mr. Rik Thornberg, but some people called him T-berg and T-bird. Recently, he gave an entire lecture while lying on the ground. Of course, I got that info secondhand. Even though I missed this spectacle, I still think Mr. Thornberg rocks. His psych quizzes were eeriely...clairvoyant.
