Nueces County Family History Project

Initiated September 2002

In order to help the Czech-Moravians of Nueces County (and the surrounding counties of the Coastal Bend), the Czech-Moravian Family History Project is being initiated. This project is multi-faceted and will take several years to complete.

The "backbone" of the project will to extract the Czech-Moravian information for the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Census records. Leo Baca, creator of the Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, will be coordinating the project. (We are looking for assistance with this.)

We are currently exploring options pertaining to the access of the records for the Unity of the Brethren (Unity of the Brethren) Church which was in Robstown until the 1980's.

To involve as many people as possible, a Surname Registry is being created. We hope to not only compile surnames but to compile a list of researchers for those surnames. The companion to this project will promoting the completion and submission of Family Group Sheets to the project.

Oral histories and family history narratives will also be solicited.

It is our intention to publish the census date as soon as possible as a research tool. We will eventually publish the other material as well.

In addition, I am exploring the options for on-line access to at least part of the information. I want a searchable database.

Do Any of Your Families Have Roots in the Coastal Bend?

If you do, please participate in the project.

If you are just starting your research:

Please submit the surnames that you are researching with any full names, addresses, and  information about other places they may have lived to the project. You may send it by e-mail or by regular mail.  We will sharing the name and contact information of the researcher/compiler of the Family Group Sheet so that others researching that surname may contact him/her. If you do not wish to be contacted by other researchers, please state so specifically in your message. The addresses are listed below:

If you already have research results:

If you have a Family Group Sheet for a family that has connections to Nueces County and/or the Coastal Bend, please submit a copy of that family sheet to the project. We wish to include information back to the original immigrant (s) from the Czech lands, whenever possible. Information on living individual will not be made public. We will sharing the name and contact information of the researcher/compiler of the Family Group Sheet so that others researching that surname may contact him/her. If you do not wish to be contacted by other researchers, please state so specifically. Privacy requests will be honored. The contact address are listed below.

If you have information but have not completed a Family Group Sheet, you may wish to view and/or print the Czech-Moravian Family Group Sheets which have been developed for this project. The sheets are based on one created by Albert J. Blaha. To facilitate the use of this form, the font size has been increased and the page changed from "portrait" to "landscape."  A master set for this form printed on high quality matte photo paper can be obtained by sending $2.00 to cover the cost of printing and postage.

Have you compiled/collected family narratives or histories?

If so, please submit those to the project. These narratives "paint a picture" of what was. We want to include them not only for this reason but also because they may contain clues for other researchers.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Please send me an e-mail.

Mail Surname/researcher information, Family Group Records, or narratives and histories to:
