VASSAR CLEMENTS DEAD AT 77 AFTER LONG FIGHT WITH CANCER.

==============================

Jimmy Martin passed away this morning, May 14, 2005 at approximately 8:45. Jimmy fought hard to beat the health problems that plagued him. He was hoping to be with us at Bean Blossom this June, and we are all saddened that it was not meant to be. To all of you who wrote and emailed the King of Bluegrass, please know that he took great pleasure in hearing from you. I spent many hours sitting with him at his computer helping him sort through emails and typing responses as he uttered them. Sometimes, Jimmy would be touched emotionally by the nice things his fans wrote to the point of crying. Jimmy will always be the King, and there will never be another like him.He was 77 years old. =================================================================

Mandolin squabble continues

By Amanda Wardle

July 25, 2003

A legal squabble between the family of late Bluegrass music legend Bill Monroe and the Kentucky-based foundation set up to preserve his legacy continues as the foundation says that family members may have tried to interfere with the foundation’s fund-raising efforts to pay for a mandolin worth more than $1 million. The issue in question stems from legal action filed in December by James Monroe, son of Bill Monroe and executor of his estate, charging that the Bill Monroe Foundation had failed to uphold its end of the bargain in the purchase of a mandolin said to be used by Bill Monroe for more than 50 years. The instrument purportedly is a 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin, a limited edition built by Lloyd Loar. The Rosine, Ky.-based foundation agreed to purchase the mandolin from James Monroe in 2001 for $1.125 million, but Monroe claims the foundation has not fulfilled its payment obligations. The foundation last week filed an answer to James Monroe’s claim in which it says that “[James Monroe] or his agents have interfered with the ability of the Monroe Foundation to raise funds, and thus, [James Monroe] has unclean hands.” The foundation also denies the purchase contract is void because the full price hasn’t been paid. Campbell Mercer, foundation director, declined Thursday to elaborate on the alleged interference. He admitted the foundation has only paid approximately $162,000 of the purchase price, noting that it has been plagued with fund-raising difficulty since its inception. He said he believes the foundation’s fund-raising efforts have recently hit an upswing. “We’ve got more momentum now than we have since the ribbon cutting in August 2001,” Mercer said. The first of what will likely be multiple annual music festivals in Rosine, the former home of Bill Monroe, is to be held on Labor Day weekend, and Mercer said he believes the Jerusalem Ridge Bluegrass Festival 2003, will likely raise a large chunk of the funds still owed. While representatives for James Monroe could not be reached for comment Thursday evening, Mercer said he has an amicable relationship with Monroe and contract negotiations for the mandolin continue out of court. “James and I get along really well,” Mercer said. “There have been some unfortunate things that have happened that have slowed down the repayment process. … We certainly hope that we can renegotiate the contract with James.” The foundation is attempting to raise approximately $20 million over the next five years to complete a project that includes not only a museum in Rosine where the mandolin will be displayed, but also the construction of an amphitheater and the renovation of the former home and farm of Bill Monroe.
