It was a fall day at Vincent Massey Collegiate, the year was 2003, and it was lunchtime. Usually at this time, a certain group of students would go outside, and play some good old fashioned schoolyard football. They have been doing this literally almost everyday since at least Grade 5. But lately, the football population seemed to be dwindling for unknown reasons. Five of these guys, William Hatton, Mark Woods, Nathan Boutin, Nick Zawadski, and Aron Piamsalee were outside with the football, waiting for other people to come out and play. After some time, they gave up completely, and for good reason, because nobody did show up for the rest of the lunch hour. They began to fool around with the ball, and kick it around on the ground. Nick then took the position of goalie, and they all started to take shots on him, like it was a soccer ball. They then divided themselves into two teams, so they could do some passing plays. All that day, every couple of minutes, a new rule was incorporated, or something was changed. William kept everybody’s statistics, including the goaltending stats. The next day, much the same happened, with the addition of Dan Schwartz. New rules and game terms were coined.
Since then, Trogdor has evolved quite a bit, into a very organized game. The popularity of the sport has grown quite substantially. The entire point of creating this game was because nobody was coming out to play sports at lunch anymore. It would appear that that problem had been resolved, witht he thanks to Trogdor.
A year later, the National Trogdor League had officially been born. There is a Board of Governors, a Players’ Association, and a website. Every year, a big tournament is held in February. This is called “Le Trog”. The winners of this tournament receive the coveted “NTL Bowling Pin”, and get their names on it. The tournament’s most valuable player receives the “Burnanator Award”.
