1Co 14:1 ¶ Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

Notice that after ending chapter 12 on the spiritual gifts, Paul goes into the importance of love in Chapter 13. Then, he starts off in 14 pointing out the importance of prophesy or teaching.

1Co 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

The important thing is that the church is edified or taught.

1Co 14:6 ¶ Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Here he emphasizes understanding, which is needful for instruction or edification.

1Co 14:15 ¶ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Notice that we are to pray with the spirit and understanding. A man cannot pray in some language that he cannot understand and it come from God. To claim that God gave him those things (words), that he does not understand is to say God lied in 1 Cor. 14:15.

1Co 14:16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

I like Paul plead my case here. Lets be men or adults when it comes to understanding the will of God.

1Co 14:21 ¶ In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Isa 28:11  For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. The tongue speaking was for the unbelieving Jews. It was a sign given to them from God that they would know this was God's word.

23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

Again Paul emphasizes the importance of prophesy, that is understood by all, unto edification.

1Co 14:26 ¶ How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.

Please notice what Paul wrote above and let us be honest with each other, our self and with God. "But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God." Please notice he is to speak to himself. That means that he is to understand what he is saying. Otherwise, he could not speak to himself. He is to understand, the people hearing him may not understand in which case he must have an interpreter. This is the truth form God's word. When we claim otherwise, we blaspheme the word of God by calling it a lie.

1Co 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

Now, let us gain understanding from what Paul has written by inspiration. There can be more than one speaker in an assembly, but they are to speak one at a time, "one by one". Notice in verse 31 "that all may learn ...", for all to learn from what one said then all must be present in the same place as the speaker. This is quite a contrast from what is so popular today. Bible classes or Sunday School classes are not in the Bible. Bible classes are neither described nor implied, they are not found in the Holy Scripture. When in a class arrangement, not all the congregation hears what is said by any of the teachers. God wants men to hear what the women are taught. He wants women to hear what women are taught. God wants parents to hear what is taught to their children. He wants teachers of the Church to hear what others teach. The same was true before Christ. Please read Duet. 31:12-13.

1Co 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

In the above verses we see the prophets (speakers) have control over themselves. No one is to speak out of turn and certainly God is not going to take control of an individual that he begins to talk out of turn.

1Co 14:34 ¶ Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Now this goes hard against the customs our day and society. The women are to be silent in the Church. The women are to be silent in the Church. They are not to take part in the discussion to the extent they are to ask privately any questions that they have. The pharse, “husbands at home” implies in a private situation. Some implied that he was talking about the prophets wives, and thus it did not apply to others. Certainly, if it is true for the prophets wives, then it is true for all women. Notice the phrase, “for it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church” by this we know that it applied to all women. It also applies to all women today. I know that this is not popular today, but it is still the word of God. How can we delete part of the word of God. If we decide to cut part out and keep part, we assume to know more than God who wrote it.

1Co 14:36 ¶ What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

Certainly Paul did not lie when he said, “the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. “. If he lied then how can we believe anything that he wrote? If he did not lie, then what is written above is truly the commandments of God! “38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant” is a very interesting statement. Surely, by this he is not saying that we are not to teach the unlearned. If this is what he is saying then he condemned himself for teaching it here. This does not make good sense and is not what Paul intended for us to understand. As some have suggested, what he is saying is, “if he does not know, let him be not known”

1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

Therefore we do not forbid anyone to speak with tongues (different languages), but when he does he is to follow the guidelines given by Paul. We certainly want all things done decently and in order. We want to follow the order given to us by God.

Conclusion

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word secret as,” hidden, not made public, remote, secluded, private. There are secrets in I Corinthians 14. But who is hiding these things? Who is keeping the truth from being made public and open? Is it God? Hardly. “God is not willing that any should perish”. II Peter 3:9. Jesus spoke of the truth “setting us free”. And the Apostle Paul writes, “God is not the author of confusion”. We can easily conclude that God is not keeping the truth secret. Man is the culprit. Jesus said in Matthew 15:9 “But in vain they do worship me teaching for doctrines the commandments of men”. Our exhortation to the reader is this: Search the scriptures as the noble Bereans that were mentioned in Acts 17:11. They searched for the sole purpose of determining if the things taught to them were true. You should do the same. Question your tradition. Question your Pastor. He is just a man. Conclude God to be inerrant and every man marred with imperfection. God is not keeping secrets regarding salvation and worship. The secrets of God’s will are hidden within man’s traditions and false doctrine.

How does a secret cease to be a secret. When everyone knows. Let's spead the word, send this page to everyone you know, and they will know what are the secrets. So, share these secrets with your friends.
