Now, anyone who knows me knows that I am ridiculously easy to scare, but I think this movie is truly terrifying. The best scary movies are the ones that stay with you for days, and this did just that. The phenomenal script by William Goldman (Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) was perfect for the mood of this movie. It literally kept me awake at night trying to figure out why it was so disturbing.
I mean, obviously it's scary that lions were eating people, but that's not it. And it's not just the violence, or even the fact that the attacks were unprovoked. Packs of dogs attack people all the time, and it's not disturbing like this.
I have finally come to the tentative conclusion that it is the fact that there were TWO, not a pack, not just one, but a pair. That they seem "bonded together in evil" is the most frightening thing. But I am still dissatisfied with that conclusion, too. There is something going on there that I still can't figure out. Ideas, anyone?
