Zimpelman— was born at Hufscorfbei Germany, July 24, 1832, and died at Austin, Texas, Jan 1, 1908, aged 75 years, 5 months, and 7 days. He came to Travis County direct in 1848, where he remained until his death, after a residence at and near the capital city about 60 years. He enlisted with Terry Rangers for and during the civil war, where he distinguished himself as a fearless and brave soldier; was sheriff of Travis County from 1866 to the reconstruction period, and was subsequently re-elected during the '70s; served as colonel on Gen. Ross' staff; was postmaster at Austin four years during President Cleveland's administration, and served a four year's term under President Roosevelt, and was such at his death; was a member of the Knights Templar; of the local lodge of Elks; and of the John B. Hood Camp of Confederate Veterans. Col. Zimpelman stood high as a citizen and official, and possessed the confidence, respect and esteem of all his acquaintances."
