While he’s really only related to Wildwing, Nosedive tends to get treated as everyone’s younger brother. Which, I think, is rather fortunate.
‘Dive is extraordinarily immature. He takes everything as lightly as possible and many of his wisecracks are so inconveniently placed that they are either ignored or become lost in the action. He has a tendency to joke with the audience rather than the other characters, which was one of my big turn-offs towards the show for a while. Placed in context (rather than nestled in a commercial montage), however, I find such remarks to be quite witty, indeed.
I’m drawn to Duke by his mysterious charm. ‘Dive won me over because he’s such a goon. Tanya implied in one episode that he was “big, slow, and utterly useless.” That’s precisely why I love him so much. He’s just so darn carefree and happy-go-lucky and exactly my opposite. He's a little bit reckless, a lot bit impulsive, and rather overzealous, to boot. But he somehow always ends up doing exactly what needs to be done.
As for his voice- the casting director was brilliant. I bow down to him or her. Steve Mackall seems to have a lot of fun with the role (as he does with what little I have heard of him outside the show), and he’s got the most perfect bright, cheery, quasi-surfer bum voice with all the little nuances that really round out the little maniac.
And now, speaking of little maniacs, even my hamster has gone to bed. I think I shall retire the ole notebook and get some rest - Mom’s waking me up before ::gasp!:: noon to get me fitted for marching band.
