Full Name Given: The Earl of Edrington
Age: 30-something, I'd guess...
Occupation: Army Major, diplomat
Actor: Samuel West

A posh, insufferable jerk trots up on his horse, followed by an army of lobsters. He turns up his nose at our dear Naval pals, then haughtily informs them of his aristocratic title. Over the course of the episode, he treats Horatio as a younger brother who is to be tolerated because Mother will take away his personal stable if he doesn't. He rarely ever comes down off his high horse (quite literally). And he spends as little time with the troops as possible. Well, the French or Naval troops, that is.

But wait. I thought this was a site for things I like. Mmmindeed. Edrington is the best character in the series. Not the most attractive (Horatio), the most loveable (Wellard), or the most humourous(Archie). But he scores high enough in each category to qualify as the best. Dry humour is his forte. He's great for a snicker, if you enjoy that sort of thing. Don't let him fool you - he just doesn't know how to deal with the lower-classes. He really does like Horatio, and, though he doesn't spend much time with him, he seems to enjoy the company of Archie, as well.

It wasn't until the second time I saw The Frogs and the Lobsters that I saw him for what he is - a great guy with a marvelous sense of humour. And he's great about only showing as much emotion as is absolutely necessary. He's not Vulcan - he doesn't strive for a complete absence of emotion - but he does have a certain...Vimes-esque approach to expressing himself. You can tell what he is feeling, but he is much more subtle about it than most. And subtlety will get me every time.

Psst! Like what you see here? There's more!

Fiyah! (or something)
