Invader ZIM

I almost didn’t give this one a chance. The animation really made me think twice about it (the tongues still sort of freak me out). And besides, none of the recent Nicktoons have really been all that spectacular. It took several viewings for it to grow on me.

The show is about an alien who, because the high and mighty commanding alien guys think he is incompetent (which he is, rather), winds up being assigned to invade Earth, rather than one of the more desirable planets. He disguises himself as a "normal" student and, despite the fact that he is a most unnatural shade of green, no one notices anything out of the ordinary. Except, of course, for Dib, your typical paranoid, conspiracy-exposing type. It's all quite twisted and the brand of humor is positively marvelous.

It’s just a neat-o show. The characters are fun, the situations are downright wild, and, as I said, the humor is deliciously twisted. Richard Horvitz turns in a most brilliant performance that makes his Daggett seem almost calm and rational. Gir, his defunct SIR, is a fan favorite with his bubbly demeanor and total cluelessness. And, of course, what is probably my very favorite in-joke in a television show ever, Frank Conniff’s cameo in “Attack of the Saucer Morons.” If anyone knows where I can find a picture of this, that information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you much.

The series airs Fridays at 9:00 PM EST on Nickelodeon. It was created by Jhonen Vasquez.

Thanks to BOW TO ME, MEATBAG!! for the picture.
