Bangor Hibs 5-0 Crossmolina

Crossmolina AFC experienced the highs and lows of football over a busy weekend. The zenith was reaching the summit of Nephin on their sponsored climb and the nadir was a five goal drubbing at Bangor Hibs which leaves their promotion hopes looking as slim as Ally McBeal. Bangor cruised to an effortless 5-0 victory against an understrength Crossmolina side who have a proclivity to play abysmally every once in a while and who, on this occasion, were lucky to get nil. The first piece of action came from a well worked Paul Flaherty free kick from 22 yards out after 6 minutes which was brilliantly saved by the Bangor goalkeeper. Crossmolina should have savoured the moment because it would be their only shot on target in the whole game, so anaemic was their performance. For the next half hour they endured a horror show on a par with Scream 1, 2 and 3 combined as Bangor plundered 4 goals thanks to some shambolic Crossmolina defending. Liam Conway scored the first after 10 minutes when netminder Johnny O'Hora failed to gather a loose ball in his area and it squirmed free to the Bangor striker who thumped it home for a 1-0 lead. He doubled the difference 8 minutes later after another defensive breakdown by the visitors. Not quite content with handing two goals to their hosts Crossmolina wanted to get credit on the score sheet for their generosity. So when a ball fell between O'Hora and left back Paul Flaherty, with the netminder rushing out to claim it, the stage was set for the ultimate humiliation. Flaherty drew out O'Hora and when you would least expect it poked the ball past the helpless goalie into an open net for a 3-0 deficit and a moment to sum the ineptitude of this Crossmolina side. Liam Heraty scored a fourth before half-time thus rendering the second half as meaningless as Robbie and Geri's romance. Bangor's minds were firmly on the post match showers as the second half commenced and as a result a more purposeful Crossmolina side controlled the flow of the game without ever causing the Hibs goalie to get involved. The half was an obvious inconvenience to both sides and rarely sparked to life except for a few Bangor shots on goal. Conway completed his hat-trick with 5 minutes remaining and the referee mercifully blew for full time soon after. This was a dire result for Crossmolina which leaves them with a mountain much bigger than Nephin to climb if they are going to get promoted to the Super League now.
