In the last interview before her death, Marilyn pleaded unsucessfully with a reporter to end his article like this: "What I really want to say: That what the world really needs is a real feeling of kinship. Everybody: stars, labourers, Negroes, Jews, Arabs. We are all brothers. Please don't make me a joke. End the interview with what I believe". The media always ignored what Marilyn Monroe really believed. The real truth about Marilyn Monroe is that she was a caring, intelligent, compassionate civil rights advocate who was targeted, not by the Kennedys, but by J. Edgar Hoover’s Mafia cohorts. Marilyn Monroe was a bona fide civil rights activist. She was not your typical, Paula Jones lackey, who needs an army of Conservative lawyers to create the bogus impression that Jones versus Clinton was a Federal, civil rights action. Why can’t the media ever get it right? We’re not talking rocket science. Marilyn Monroe was a public figure whose entire life was an open book. In 1960, she sponsored SANE, the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. Her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality and for peace, were well known to anybody who bothered to report the truth. But one would never guess the fact that she was a fierce target of every red-baiter in town, given the fairy tale existence that the media recorded. Indeed, the media has absolutely oblitherated the gap between ignorant rumor and fact, where Marilyn Monroe is concerned. But despite the best efforts to make all the fairy tales stick, red-baiting zealots are responsible for the murder of Marilyn Monroe. The suggestion that the Kennedys are responsible are as reliable as the absurd claim that the Clintons are responsible for the murder of Vincent Foster. Rumors die hard, but not in our hands.The delicious irony is that Marilyn Monroe ultimately maintained her credibility while the media has proved to be absolutely fickle and ureliable. A victim of Hoover's McCarthyite witchhunts, Marilyn Monroe did not budge an inch, in the war against the terrorists who had to invent the word Un-American, to satisfy their extreme paranoia. In the words of the forever reasonable Marilyn Monroe, "some of those bastards in Hollywood wanted me to drop Arthur. Said it would ruin my career. They're born cowards and want you to be like them. One reason I want to see Kennedy win is that Nixon's assocoiated with that whole scene". In the end, those "bastards" murdered Marilyn Monroe because mobster Johnny Roselli bragged about his "friends in high places" who were going to take care of Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe was not the sort of coward who tolerated the plot to murder the President of the United States, without a fight. Like a modern day Julie Hiatt Steele, Monroe was despised because she told the truth, and the character of those who attacked her is easy to understand. We have all witnessed the face of the abuse that Susan McDougal and other citizens are forced to endure at the hands of ignorant bigots, and their plight in turn, helps us to appreciate the "Bird on a Wire" existence of Marilyn Monroe. If only she had her very own Mel Gibson, to endure the forces that destroyed her.
