Hot Track Of The Week:

This is a song currently in the Top 50 that I'll feature each week.

Chappell Roan - Pink Pony Club

Although she's only become well-known on the worldwide music stage over the past year, Chappell Roan has been recording and releasing music for over five years. The Missouri native first wrote and recorded "Pink Pony Club" in 2019. It was inspired by Roan's trip to The Abbey, a gay bar in West Hollywood, California not long after she arrived in Los Angeles from her hometown of Springfield, Missouri. While there, she became enthralled with the go-go dancers on the stage there and - on a bigger scale - she felt like she'd found a place where she could be herself without being judged...something she never felt she could accomplish in Missouri. The song itself is a catchy story song about a woman from a small town in Tennessee who moves to Los Angeles and starts dancing at a strip club named The Pink Pony Club despite the objections of her disapproving mother. After recording it, Roan wanted to release it as a single, but execs at her record label refused to do so until a year later in April 2020 when they changed their minds. At the time, it didn't have commercial success, but following Roan's meteoric rise in popularity of late, it was re-released and has been starting to get a lot of exposure. I haven't liked all of her releases that I've heard, but I do like this one a lot.

Spotlight Song Of The Week:

This is a song from the Next In Line List that may be making a debut sometime within the next few weeks.

Al Green - Everybody Hurts

Although it's been roughly 15 years since the Soul legend has released new original music, he's churned out a handful of covers of late: Freddy Fender's "Before The Next Teardrop Falls" in 2018, 2023's rendition of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day," and now a reimaginging of one of R.E.M.'s signature songs, 1993's "Everybody Hurts." Green has said - for his take on the song - he wanted to try and inject a little light and hope into the lyrics and delivery. If you're a traditionalist and a fan of the original, listening to Green's version will likely be jarring for you because it's a completely new take on the track. I'm a huge fan of the original, but I like the direction Green has taken the song in. The jury's still out on whether or not it'll make it onto the Top 50, but I'm enjoying listening to it and warming up to it at this point.

Blast From The Past:

This is a song from the past that I'm featuring to bring back memories of yesteryear!

Al Green - Here I Am (Come & Take Me)

This week's Blast From The Past takes us back to 1973. Since the Spotlight Song of the Week featured Al Green covering a classic song, I figured for the Blast From the Past, we'd do things the other way around. In June 1973, "Here I Am (Come & Take Me)" was released from Al Green's album, Call Me. The mid-tempo and seductive love jam became an across the board hit, getting to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and doing even better on the R&B chart, where it peaked at #2. In a discography of such well-remembered hits, today it stands as one of the most beloved tracks Green ever released. It's been covered several times over the years, but it became a hit all over again 17 years later when British Reggae/Pop band, UB40, released their own cover. Where Green's original hadn't charted well outside the U.S., the 1990 cover performed decently in a handful of countries around the world and bested Green's version on the Hot 100 in the U.S., climbing three spots higher to #7. I love both versions of the song, but nothing can top Green's original for me.
