1984 Ibanez Destroyer II

This is my 1984 Ibanez Destroyer II. I decided to give it a complete makeover for her 20th birthday in January of 2004.

This is what she looked like before I started

What I decided to do was to use a piece of fabric to make a custom finish on the top of it. This is the same method used on the Ibanez Jem floral patterned guitars.

For the back and sides, I used a textured trunk paint and painted it black.

I made a cutout of the guitar and propped it up on toothpicks, sat it on to of the guitar body and painted black around the edge to give it that burst look. It helps the fabric look like it blends in with the rest of the body. Then I had to give it enough coats of clearcoat that the fabric texture pretty much flattened out. I painted the pickups and most of the heardware black as well.

I also decided I wanted a Jem-style vine inlaid into the fretboard.

I refinished the headstock as well, and replaced the old gold Ibanez logo with a more modern transparent red one I made myself. You can't really see it that good uless the light hits it right and it looks almost pearlescent. Not quite what I'd envisioned, but pretty cool nonetheless.
