The Pilgrims felt it was their duty to convert their “savage” and “primitive” neighbors, and the ability to preach to the indigenous population in their own language was considered useful. To this end, John sought out an interpreter to help him.
John found a youth that had been taken prisoner in the Pequot War of 1637. This youth had learned English while in captivity and servitude to an English family. His native language being Algonquian, of which the Massachusetts language was a dialect, he was able to assist John. The result of this collaboration was the first Bible printed in North America (1663). Most remarkable, this Bible was a translation into the Massachusetts language.
John’s wife, Ann, was born ca. 1603 and died 22 March 1687. John died in Roxbury 20 May 1690.
