on tires & wheels.

During March 2000, users of the off-road.com Nissan email list were asked to take a survey about their vehicle.  The survey was created in hopes of defining what is necessary to run larger tires and different wheels.  In all, there were 40 participants.  Majority of the replies were Hardbody owners followed by Pathfinders.  Unfortunate, no Xterra owners replied.  Watching the email list, it appears 32" tires will fit the Xterra with little rubbing and only moderate trimming required.

Results:
All Hardbody and Pathfinder owners can safely run 31x10.50 tires on 7x15 wheels with factory offset.  This is no surprise as Nissan designed and sold vehicles with this setup.  Occasionally someone experiences trouble with this setup.  This can be a result of two conditions:  One, the steering stops were not adjusted when going from smaller tires (ex: 215 or 235) to 31" tires;  Two, the wheel offset may cause the tires to rub.

Data from 1988 Nissan Truck/Pathfinder Service Manual

offset (mm) offset (inches) Stock tire size
Nissan Wheel (inches)
6x15   steel 30 1.18 P235/75r15
7x15   aluminum 25 0.98 31x10.50r15

Nissan Hardbody owners have it the easiest.  All years can run 32x11.50" tires with little trouble.  Depending on the wheel used, only moderate trimming of the front fender flare is necessary.  A sharp utility knife or even a band saw (if you take the flares off)can fix this.  You may find it necessary to remove the front mud guards too.  However, removing the mud guards will result in more damage to the paint found on the rocker panels and lower doors(I speak from experience).  If only rock crawling, this won't be a problem for you.  Many of us running larger tires have installed a Superlift or similar IFS torsion bar lift kit.  These lift kits simply replace the upper A-arm and do not allow larger tires to fit better.  Starting with tires 11.50 inches wide, the rear tires will rub against the frame.  Mounted on Nissan 7x15 wheels, 31x11.50 tires rub moderately and 32x11.50 tires more severely.  Tires 12.50" wide will require more fore-thought.  With or without replacing the upper A-arm from a lift kit, 33x12.50" tires will fit but more trimming would be required over 32" tires.  In fact, the Rancho lift kit recommends cutting the fenders with tires this large.  Hopefully the results below will help you.  Starting with 33" tires and larger, most would recommend using the Trailmaster lift kit.  This lift kit goes beyond the typical kit and does more to create room for larger tires.  A body lift and/or replacing the upper A-arms with those from Superlift is not uncommon too.  Going larger than 33" tires?  Definitely the Trailmaster lift as a minimum!  Anyone running tires over 31" should be prepared to bend tie-rods and other steering components.

Pathfinder owners should be broken into two categories.  Those with torsion bar lift in the front and those with coil springs.  Not sure what kind you have?  Look into the front wheel well and locate the shock.  Is it surrounded by a coil spring?  If not, you have the earlier model and the lift is provided by the torsion bar.  Those with the torsion bar lift can look towards the Hardbody for tire and wheel sizes.  Owners that have the coil spring may experience more trouble with larger tires.  Little insight was provided by the survey to help the later Pathfinders.

The Frontier owners that responded wasted no time in trying something new.  Being a new vehicle, there are many benefits to sticking to near stock sizes while the factory will pay for repairs.  No one replied with tires larger than 31x10.50.

No responses were received by Xterra owners.  A few responses were received by Patrol and 720 owners.

And now the replies, as they were dropped in my box:

OtherComments:

Performance not bad at all, I was worried that 33s would cut down on power too much, but I was really surprised. I wish I would have put 33s on my truck a lot earlier. I got some half used BFG mud terrains to try them and see how truck ran with 33s before I bought brand new tires. I am going to run these tires a while and buy 33x12.50 swampers when these wear out.

Trimmed front inside corner of front fenders.  Lowered bump stop for rear suspension 1-inch.  Will hopefully be able to remove this once I go to 8.5x15 wheels

OtherComments:

Performance was OK everywhere until I tried to go rock crawling.  At that point, I realized I needed lower gears.  Performance hurt up hills and worse compared to Nissan's without tire change.  Overall, OK as long as I stayed in VA when 4'wheeling.

The front tires rub when the wheels are cranked and the axle is at med to heavy articulation.  They rub on the rear of the fender (right by the door).

PreventTireRubbingModifications:

15x8.5 CenterLine Type 33's on order :)
The less aggressive offset will allow the tires to fit properly.

OtherComments:

The power drain from the larger tires is noticable since I left the ring and pinion gears stock.  Definately a bummer.  I'm thinking about putting ARB's front and rear and if I do, then new ring and pinions are going in at the same time.  Otherwise,  I'm hoping that a few good performance mods (K&N filter, Tornado, dual exit cat-back exhaust, and Jacob's Omni Team Ignition System are all in the works) will put me back into - or near - my stock power band.

Can u update my tire size on your tire size chart? I'm
the one that had the 30x11.5 Swamper SX on 15x8 rims.
Now I have 31x13.5 SX on the same 15x8 rims. I did
have to trim some plastic from behind the front wheel
wells, but other than that, everything else is
unchanged. How muchis that solid axle swap costing
you? Are you having coils, coil-over, or leafs put
under the front? I'll be swapping my D44 over in a
couple years (after it's built, and I have the $!)

OtherComments:

Performance is okay with the stock 4.625 gears, although I would like to install 4.875. It is just hardly worth the expense.

I had to use 4mm spacing plates under the wheels to decrease backspacing for the wheels to stay clear of the lift components.

Also I had new fiberglass fender flares put on (made locally).

I am quite happy with the Trailmester lift. The only problem with the bigger tires is a slight tendency to wander, but with good wheel alignment it is not serious.

Stock tires were 275/75R15, changed to 30x9.5R15. 275/75R15 = 30x10.5R15, so new tires are 1" narrower, but mud tire tread in.
