First Meeting of the Year

The first meeting will be an on Saturday, September 7 at the Tatariw’s from 7:30 – 9:30.  This is a girl only meeting and dessert will be served (International desserts made by the leaders). This will be a time to reconnect and set a direction for the next two years. Girls should bring:

1) calendars for the year as you know it
2) ideas for activities/trips/service projects/fundraisers
3) annual dues of $25.00 (check made out to Troop 1499)
4) the attached health forms with parental changes made and dated as well as a parental signature (initials acceptable) in the highlighted space. If there are no changes state that next to the signature at the highlighted space.
5) Paperwork for any recognitions they need purchased (see the paragraph “What have you been doing?” below.
6) Theater Arts weekend deposit (see page 3)

Please RSVP to Mrs. Davis (phone or email) if you CANNOT make it. See you on the 7th.

Gold Award Update

Here is the current status of all troop members in regards to the Gold Award:

1) Completed: Amy
2) Approved and working: Corianne and Alex
3) Completed pre-requisites but not submitted project to GSCNC: Tracy, Katherine, Lauren and Mallary
4) Still have requirements to finish: Lucy and Stephanie

For those in Group 3 what can get you motivated? We can’t give you a project but Mrs. Davis will gladly sit down with you and work on some ideas based on your own likes and dislikes. One word of caution from GSUSA: avoid working on a project together with another person:

a) the write-up has to distinctly show 2 jobs of 50 hours each and
b) with everyone’s crazy schedules it is hard to get together so one person may be doing well but is prevented from completing due to the other person being too busy. Mrs. Davis has heard ugly stories from other leaders where this has happened and friendships have ended.

For the two in Group 4 you should know what you need and be working on your own to complete.

It should also be stated that there is no requirement for anyone to complete the Gold to stay in scouts. None of the leaders will push you into a project you won’t complete. Just be aware that assistance is available if needed. Also college applications can start at the beginning of senior year so if you are motivated by anything this should get your attention since I am sure you would want the Gold on your application.

  Enough said about that!!!!!!

Gold Award Workshop

Sunday, October 27 from 2 to 5 at the New Lodge at Crowell.  Questions? Contact Carol Frost at 703-318-9440 or cifrost@aol.com or Kath Delia at 703-787-8185 or jbdelia@erols.com

Silver Trefoil

Just an update here as well though I seem to remember most of you said you weren’t interested in this. Well I thought I would go over it again. The requirements are on pages 26 – 28 of Kaleidoscope. So far Katherine and Amy have both completed the requirements and are wearing the lovely medals.

Throughout the year items will appear in the newsletter and next to it will be “ST” meaning this could count for Silver Trefoil. Since I have no idea who is working on this or what hours anyone needs these hours need to be tracked by each individual. No leaders will be doing it for you. One thing to remember is any hours you do for school may also count for Silver Trefoil.

Again no one will pressure you to do this but it is one more plus for the college transcript. Direct any questions to Mrs. Davis.

Association Event

(Council ST hours/ Leadership or Service hours for Gold)

On Sunday, September 29 from 1 – 4 pm our new Association, Difficult Run, is having an event at Bull Run Park in Centreville. This is a “Kick-off the new Year and Association” event that can accommodate 600 presenters and participants. There will be activities primarily for the Juniors and younger but possibly some for the Teen Scouts as well. Help is needed by Teen Scouts to:

1) run a program for younger girls to participate in (such as part or all of a Try-it or Junior badge), a craft, songs workshop, international activity for international Silver Trefoil hours, etc.
2) just say you will help and you will be used as needed

Not that patches or badges interest you much anymore but everyone who comes to the event will receive the brand new Association patch, hot off the loom.

What have you been doing????

Mrs. Davis would like to know what people have earned so you can be rewarded with the appropriate “vest adornment”. I know some of you worked at camp this summer and may have earned the PA patch or used the hours elsewhere (IPP, Silver Trefoil, etc.). Or maybe you completed an IPP (right Mrs. Davis) I have looked thru the IPP book and found some that Amy may have earned from what I know of her school work.

The troop earned a credit at the Scout store and it has to be spent soon so let Mrs. Davis know by the first meeting if she needs to buy you anything along the lines above. The troop will buy year stars. Also if anyone is starting their 10th year as a scout (you started in second grade) be sure to let Mrs. Davis know that so she can purchase the 10 year pin.

Theater Arts Workshop Nov 16 - 17

The following girls are signed up to participate: Amy, Katherine, Tracy, Lucy, Lauren and Alex and must bring a $10.00 deposit (non-refundable if the spot goes unused) to the first meeting. The details as we know it are:

The Plays the Thing IPP workshop which will include Saturday workshops of: make-up, acting, costuming, stage combat and lighting. The play Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward will be presented by the Mary Washington Drama Department. Then Sunday morning there will be presentations and interviews with the director/designers/actors as well a video on theater history. Chances are VERY good a college tour will be arranged for our troop.

The troop will stay at a motel in Fredericksburg and will be home early afternoon on Sunday. The total cost (not counting the $10.00 deposit) will be $30 – 40.00, at the most, for food, lodging and the theater ticket.

If anyone from this group cannot go they need to let Mrs. Davis know as soon as possible so someone else from the troop or another troop can go. This activity is very limited and there is a waiting list.

Car Sense

If you are interested in learning more about cars TOGA is sponsoring the Car Sense IPP Saturday, November 9. There will be two sessions available for 25 girls each at either South Lakes High from 8:30 to 12:30 or Lake Ann Exxon from 9:30 to 1:30.  A service project at the site to complete the IPP will follow the 3 hours of other training. Cost is $2 per girl and will include the IPP.  We will limit this to 10th, 11th and 12th graders.  To sign up girls must send in their name, money and e-mail address to Donna Frederick at 11621 Deer Forest Rd. Reston, 20194. Questions? Contact Donna at defreddy@hotmail.com.

TOGA wants this to be independent from the troop so if you are interested you must submit your name, mail the check (you are not registered until the check is received by Mrs. Frederick), and let Mrs. Davis know you are confirmed so she can get you the appropriate paperwork (health forms and permission form) which you have to take with you to the session.

TTG

Will hopefully be distributed at the September 7th meeting.
