Gourd Baskets

Gourds have been used since primitive times as a container for storing or eating food and drink. Even early man decorated their treasured vessels. The following baskets are all cut from a single gourd.

"Women's Wisdom", This very large gooseneck style gourd has been carved, stained and 'decorated' with various jewels. I thought as I first envisioned her in this gourd that this woman exemplified all women, who generally 'bend over backwards' to make everything right in their world>

"By The Light of the Silver Moon", a 21" basket. The wolf, horses and trees were all done with pyrography, after which the 'moon' was revealed by carving away the outer portion of the dark gourd skin.

Baby's New Shoes. 17" tall basket, pyroengraved, carved, and inlayed.

Overgrown and Forgotten, an 18" tall basket, with faux weaving done in pyrography. Only color added is Gilders Paste Wax on the leaves.

"Earthly Elements", an elegant 11" tall vase which has been pyroengraved and colored in Gilders wax, with silver inlays.

"Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow, a very large gourd basket done with detailed carving providing the outline of a crouching woman on one side embracing her crouching love on the opposite side, forming the handle..

"Harvest Moon", a 15" tall gourd basket with extensive carving, pyrography, and some inlay.

"Spiraling Ever Upward", large basket with complex cut to form this graceful spiraling handle on the gourd. Couched in a spiral of pine needles, pyroengraved and stained.

"Surf and Turf", a 21" tall basket with an antler handle. The "Surf" side is done with pyrography, and the "turf" side has been first carved out to form the opening, then the resulting fish silhouette was pyroengraved in great detail and tinted.

"The Power of Touch", A 10" tall basket with a reclining female nude on one side, and her partner on the opposite side. They have their arms raised and are clasping hands, thus their arms form the handle. The figures are detailed with pyrography only, with the added color of abalone inlay in the woman's hair.

"Olla", 15" gourd urn, all done with pyrography, carving and inlay.

"See Spot Run", an 18" tall basket sporting 3 giraffes, rendered with pyrography.
