1st Lieutenant George R. Smith, 18th Georgia Regiment, Co. H This part of my site is dedicated to 1st Lieutenant George R. Smith,18th Georgia Regiment, Co. H "Rowland Highlanders", I Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. In this section I will post all of the documents I have, listing the Service of my Great Great Grandfather during the War of Northern Oppression, the War Between the States, the American Civil War

The document to the right, while difficult to read, is Special Orders No. 46, dated on June 28th, 1864. It states "1. The following promotions having been made, are announced accordingly: 2nd Lieut. G.R. Smith to be 1st Lieut., Co. H, 18th Ga Reg. By Command of Brig. Gen'l. Wofford" signed by "J. T. Hackett"; there is some writing after the word "Reg." that is illegible except I can make out 1st Lieut. John ..... I will work to research that entry and try to update it here later.

On 20 March 2003, I completed my research and as I expected, found that this Special Order announces not only the promotion of my Great Great Grandfather to 1st Lieutenant, it also announces the promotion of 1st Lieutenant John Grant to the rank of Captain. Captain Grant was a 2nd Lieutenant as early as June 13, 1861. He, like my Great Great Grandfather, was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. on June 27, 1862; and was wounded at Sharpsburg, Md. September 17, 1862. He was elected as 1st Lieutenant on January 17, 1863; and promoted to Captain on March 25, 1864... the day after my Great Great Grandfather was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. All the records I have show the promotions to be effective on March 24th and March 25th of 1864; however, Special Orders No. 46 is dated June 28th, 1864 (three months after the fact).
